- The Tytera Flash Tool is a super easy way to get a modified firmware, which gives lots of extra features, onto your TYT MD-380 or MD-390 radio. The tool also downloads the latest user database of amateur DMR IDs and applies it to your radio for you.

that's cool because it was like the volume bar wasn't connected, however my backlight will not switch off at all, any idea's
Yeah I noticed that too. The backlight seems to randomly stay on. It's probably just a bug. You could try reporting it somewhere, but I don't know where to do that
Go into MDTOOLZ, scroll down and enter 13 Backlight, Enter Low Light, set it to, 0 (off), Go into Backlight Tmr, I have it set to 30 sec, confirm it. Well, mine works great!
Thank you for posting this video. This is a very easy to get the firmware on the MD390/380. This makes this radio much more useable for the HAM DMR community. We all should donate to TY to keep updates coming. I do have a small problem in the contact database did not load. This could be a USA issue but I will work on what failed.
I have not found how to get contacts loaded following this video. Has anyone with a MD-390 not GPS had issues with loading the contacts.
I worked out the issue not seeing contacts. Being new to the tools I needed to make some adjustments on the MD390. This document helps all that are new and want to use the tools. github.com/KD4Z/md380tools-vm/raw/master/MD380tools_VM_installation_3.08.pdf. This is the tools manual to tell you how to set up the radio. This came from DMR Digital mobile radio on Facebook.

Hello radiosifiction, just got an MD-380 a couple of days ago and your videos have been very useful. I flashed the custom firmware moments ago and noticed the backlight stayed on all the time. Here is what I did to resolve that - Menu, Utilities, MD380Toolz, Backlight, Backlight Tmr.

You need a license for all radios except radios which are specifically sold as licence free.
Finally got it do work.. bloody pc.. taking a while to update user database..
userdb not working with me and trying to download again into the radio no go either
Just flashed the firmware. The first try didn't work. I think a result of Windows 10 "Configuration" of the device when I plugged it in. Second worked like a charm! Neat with the home screen now showing more information! Thanks for showing me this. Might renew my interest in using my MD-390!
It's a great radio. Still my favourite even today.

This is a great video -- but it appears to have been made obsolete! Following the link to the KG5RKI tools page returns a 404 error - appears the site is being reconstructed. From there i tried a Google search to find an alternative source for the software -- but see it appears that newer TYT radios have incompatibilities that have made the tool problematic.

which version is this as there is two versions floating around one with colourful pictures and one with plain text?
It says only good for Version 13 or older (not compatible with 14 or newer) - how do I know which version I have? Used radio.
brillant software..however after the latest UserDB in August the bin fail to download and install on the TYT ,and make the radio unstable unable to recieve in digital mode
I downloaded the GPS version and it appeared to load the flash file OK to my 380. However, it is now locked in the upgrade mode (flashing red/green). nothing I do will reset it. Also, the instructions say to go back to the original firmware. I'm new and can't figure out how to do that. W5GT

After watching this video I thought it about time I learned how to do this myself , My radio had a black screen from previous attempts to right a codeplug and after doing this , my tytmd 380 is alive again , thanks heaps . Rick ......VK2HFP

Why would this not work on my MD-UV380 with v17 firmware. When I upload the firmware to the radio it says it completed, but when I turn the radio off and back on, it stays in programming mode with no way to get it to boot up. The screen stays blank.
Because the MD-UV380 is a completely different radio. You can't take the firmware from one model and use it on another

O.K., so I installed the TyMD380Toolz and followed your instructions. I have caller IDs showing up fine. Everything works great, but........... One of the Talk Groups is called PARROT. What it does is retransmits your transmission so you can hear yourself - too loud, or too soft, how to transmit, but it showed me as an unidentified user I was wondering, just exactly how do you update the database?

Very easy to follow and use. However, the volume bar no longer shows and even though I downloaded the DB so far all contacts still show their ID but not any other details. eg call sign/name. Is this just me or is DB not loaded?
Have a look through the menus. I think there is a setting to turn on and off showing the DB on screen.

Followed directions, exactly. No gps. Used correct version. When done radio returns to home screen, with no controls working (knobs or buttons), then keeps rebooting. That's it. I can't do anything now. Tried re-flashing with v1.08, and still a brick. No matter what I try, it doesn't change anything.
Can you get the radio into DFU mode?

Hi Great info video, iv been looking to but one of these radios, for my shop, we have shopwatch and using the Motorola SL1600, if I key up on the SL1600 will the info from that radio come up on the MD380 then press store? or doesn't work like that.

Downloaded the software and every time I run it says its not a valid Win32 application so won't work.
Will this firmware and database work on the VHF version of the MD-380?
Is this compatible with the newer md380's that reportibly don't support MD380Toolz?

How likely are these things to brick up? And if they do is it just a case of start again? If something has gone wrong for what ever reason. As I'm planning of flashing it straight out of the box.
Never gone wrong for me so far but there are no guarantees. It's at your own risk.
If it goes wrong then you can put it in DFU mode again and if it turns on then you can just flash it again. If not, you're screwed.
you should make vidoe what all the settings do it might help out a lot ppl keep up the great work
Where can I go to get the most recent and up t date copy of the userdb? I would like the ability to load the updated db once a month if possible? Great vid btw...... Helped me flash mine with no probs..... Thx

Yes and yes. I don't know where, but you can download the original firmware from somewhere online I believe.

I think my md380toolz is messed up, I flashed ty380toolz on it, but I dont see a change, do I need to revert back to stock and flash tytoolz again?

Where do I find your source code? Like to compile and flash myself using Linux (did work for me with original md380tools perfectly), but I don't like using Windows. There are nice additionally features in your software, but want to know and learn what your software is doing else before modifying, compiling and using. Even if md380tools doesn't demand it, it would be nice, to find your modifications open source! Thanks!
These are not my modifications. I did not make any of this software. I only made the video showing how to install it. You would be better asking the people who made it.
In-between I did realize it. Seems it is made closed source so I will not recognize whats inside.

I downloaded the software and unzipped the files...I got all the file menu shown in the video but my tyteraflashtool did not have an .exe with it....im using windows 8...can anyone tell me why?

ok tried to load a code plug but says needs a dfu file and cant find a uk dfu file anywhere help please

As far as I know... Dfu is a mode the radio is in when flashing firmware into it. Press ptt and button above while power on radio, red/green led flashing confirms it is in dfu mode

according to gigaparts 380 tools voids warrenty? Maybe somebody can address this...issue
If you load the original firmware then they wouldn't be able to tell you had ever loaded md380tools so them saying it voids the warranty is pretty useless unless you're going to confess it.

Why can't you just go and look on the download page instead of wasting my time by asking a question which you could have found the answer for in 5 seconds?
Even at the start of the video you can see under downloads it shows which models it works for.
I have been locked out of my radio after updating the user database. It now requires a pass code which I do not have.
Can you put it in DFU mode and try flashing a firmware or the user DB again?
it does not work. i think the user file from the website had a password written into the file and i do not have it
I think I have heard of this happening before, but I can't remember what the fix was, if there is one. Have a look online and you should hopefully find some forum discussions or facebook comments about it.
I did mine today and it needs a password and I do not see anywhere it said to use password did anyone have this happen and if so whats the password

Yes. Pretty much all software these days does so you can usually assume it does

Yes you can just flash the original firmware back on. You should be able to find the original online somewhere.
That looks very straightforward. Where does the software download the firmware file from?
I use pd0zry.nl/md380-fw/ to download the .bin files and the updater software with the Chinese font on the buttons.
I'm not sure where it gets the firmware from. If you were really curious you could download wireshark and sniff the packets to see. However I would guess that it's probably from the same links on the download page, just above where you can download the installer.

No I don't think so. You can download a firmware from elsewhere still though and apply it with the official tyt firmware updater.

Go to MENU:
[Utilities] then [Radio Info] then [Versions].
If your firmware number version begins by a letter S it is with GPS, D it is without GPS
