Pro tip: Ignore trends, ignore releases, play whatever shit you want. Plan videogames on timed basis, not treating them as a to-do list. Say to yourself "Tonight I'll sit down and play videogames for two hours". When the time comes you sit down and play whatever game you want, hell perhaps even a couple of games. Don't treat games as your job, treat them as specifically leisure time. If Elden Ring came out and on the day of release you played pong for 5 hours straight and had a blast, then who cares?

This is the biggest problem for all gamers, I have like 500+ games in my backlog but I've only finished like say 20 games in my lifetime. And only two were from this year Driver Parallel Lines and Republic Commando. My issue is i can get burnt out really quickly with them and don't really crave certain types of games and can barely keep up with the new releases I wanna try and by then I'm too broke to try them. (I need a job) I would need a new computer, and I want a vr headset and and the new generation PlayStation too which would cost a few thousand dollars as of right now. I didn't start getting back into gaming until March 2020, this also goes for collecting them too.
Don't waste your money on hardware if you already have something close to recommended specs (especially now). Also just push through some of them , they may appear to be enjoyable or you can even get into emulation for some retro games . Or just quit for a few weeks and come back.

And I miscalculated probably there is a few games I forgot about in my childhood that I did complete but don't remember because it's been so long since I played it. But Its definitely in the range of 20 to 25 probably of what I've completed (not all 100%'d)
This can get worse when you're playing online games with either battlepasses or seasonal events, and you feel the need to get those items while they're still available, not paying attention to any single player games.
Its the "fear of missing out" that gets to me I feel the need to complete the new battle pass because if I dont ill never be able to get those items again
My solution: Mark a few as high interest, keep that number limited to 5 or less and include only those games you feel like they will offer something unique to all the others. Also, if a game doesent genuenly hook you in a certain time just drop it.
This is one of the best advices in this day and age we live in, where there's an abundance of content in every way. I have just accepted that I won't be able to play everything that I want and that's okay. There's more to life than just gaming or consuming content in general. Games are meant to be fun, and when you feel that finishing them is "obligatory", I think it's time to take some time off and go enjoy something else in your life.
As someone who just recently bought a brand spanking new PC (1060 to 3070ti), I agree... I couldn't wait to play all the games I previously couldnt play, but then after being able to play them all I am completely overwhelmed. With over 400+ games on my Steam Wishlist, I am forever stuck thinking about the next game while playing the current one.
for me, upgrading my computers more for the sake of how fun i find it to achieve the goal and how its mostly just good for my mental health to have a life goal from time to time :D

Me personally, i just abandon my backlogs. Interest can change and games you were interested in months ago won't have the same impact compared to playing them immediately. It's better to play the two games you're interested in that month than to go through a list you continuously made. I know that it's a hard pill to swallow because most people don't want to put their money on their backlog to waste, but i think its worth it to abandon your money than to constantly have your backlog haunt you till the end of time. So while my opinion is controversial, i do believe that abandoning your backlog is the answer.

You have to know what you like and have focus You can't just wish to buy and play all these games at once, choose one game at a time If you finish, or get bored, or didn't like, go to the next one, it is very simple Just play what you want and have fun, dont make this a pain in the ass video games exist to be a distraction in free time, and just that, nothing more.

Yeah, honestly, I have a massive problem with long games. I think the best thing for a game to do is be short and sweet, but have great replay value. That way, those who really like the game can play it multiple times through and enjoy it, while those who will only play it once can actually complete it. This is one of the reasons I love Dusk by new blood interactive. I'm currently playing through Elden Ring, and as someone with very low patience, I highly doubt that I will get to the end of it, even though I personally don't have a backlog issue.
I couldn’t agree more. Same issue for me. Games are too long. I started Valhalla…I really loved it but after 50h the game was getting very repetitive.. Didn’t feel like finishing it. Not sure if you played the older God of war games. The third installment is the perfect game imo: short and sweet. Not repetitive. I played GOW 3 at least 3 times and totally enjoyed it. Elden rings: same problem : looks like a huge and challenging open world game that I feel like buying but..I will probably never finish that game either. 13 - 15h should be a maximum (Sounds weird in a way: admitting I would prefer to pay for shorter games)

As someone who has basically finished there backlog, I've learned so much from it since I started seriously dedicating myself to it in 2020. I ran into the exact same problem a few years ago. I started realising how massive my backlog really is, and it was quite dreadful to think I knew I would probably never complete it. I had over 100 games on my backlog, and I thought it would take me over a decade to beat them all even if I didn't buy anything new. I'll list here all the lessons I learned and explain them as best I can. 1. Don't add games you don't already own to your backlog... EVER 2. Don't add games that are endless. 3. If your adding DLC to the backlog, only add story expansions (eg. The Witcher III: Blood & Wine) 4. Don't add the game you just started playing to your backlog. It adds a subconscious tension making you feel more rushed and stressed to complete it when completing it should NEVER be the main objective, but experiencing it. That also means if you start a game from your backlog, you should take it off of the backlog immediately, rather than after beating it 5. Always remember to take breaks. Take note of how long it typically takes to get burned out and take breaks BEFORE you even get the earliest signs of burn out, the best thing to do at this point is to go find something relaxing or just enjoyable that's unrelated to videogames. 6. When your playing a very large game like RDR2, TW3, BOTW etc. Also have something on the side that you can play in the times your not in the mood to continue playing. Something small like maybe New Super Mario Bros or relaxing games like, slime rancher. 7. Don't have more than one game from the same franchise in your backlog at once. This is something I noticed on your backlog when I saw that you have both Left for Dead 1 & 2 on the list. It adds to the tension of feeling that you NEED to complete the game your up to RIGHT NOW. If I'm playing Bioshock, I don't want it to be constantly playing on my mind that I still have yet to complete Bioshock 2 AND Bioshock infinite AND I still have to complete Fire Emblem: Three Houses. That's just an example and you may think there's no tension for you, but trust me, when you dedicate yourself to beating your backlog, it seriously knocks it out of you mentally if you don't know what your doing, so just the seemingly small amount of tension you may think this adds right now will feel huge half a year into your backlog journey. 8. Don't ever feel forced to finish a game your really not enjoying just because you already completed the previous games in it's franchise. I did this with Doom 3 where I played Doom 1 and 2 before going straight to 3 and I felt a huge pressure to complete Doom 3 despite everything I hated about it all because I thought if I didn't complete it I wouldn't have played the whole original series of games. This was literally the worst week I had in all of 2020 mentally and it just made me feel disgusting how I forced myself to complete the game despite all the hate I had for it. That week was the very essence of everything that was wrong with my attitude towards completing games through most of 2020. 9. And in relation to number 8, I learned quite a while after that experience when I decided to pick up Doom 3 again with no intention of beating it, just out of curiosity of how I would feel about the game now. I ended up actually quite enjoying it and learned that if you force yourself to play a game (even if it's a game you know you love) It hugely hinders the experience. It especially makes a an absolute SHITBAG of a game experience if you force yourself to continue playing a game you didn't even like much to begin with which is exactly what happened with me and Doom 3. 9. Now you might not do this yourself, but I made the huge mistake of trying to beat more games in the current month than I did the previous month and tried to, like it was some kind of competition, complete 1 more game every month than the last month. That's why I ended up completing 4 games each month from the start of march to the end of may 2020 and 5 games each month between June and July, so basically I completed 22 games in total in the course of only 5 months with almost no breaks because when I wasn't gaming I was at school doing year 12 (I know, I was so stupid dedicating my year more to my games than the last fricken year of school, I know that was stupid and I still don't understand how I even managed it) 10. Your "mood" for the games you feel like playing changes dramatically month by month so, as weird as this sounds, planning out the order in which you need to complete the games is a huge mistake. It really is best to just take things as they come. Once you've finished playing a game, that's the best time to start thinking about what you "feel like" playing in your backlog. Often times if you were say, playing Bioshock for example, and when you started the game, you thought "I really need to play Half Life 2 next for my backlog because it's been sitting on that backlog for years". Well by the time you finish Bioshock, you probably won't even be in the mood for Half Life 2 anymore because your "Game Moods" as I like to call them change all the time and it's usually quite out of your own control. The best thing to do is to accept it and play what you actually WANT to play at the time, after all, this should be about enjoyment, not ticking of all the games on a checklist. 11. Always be looking to "optimise" your backlog. Remove games you really don't need to have on there and you'll be surprised how much you'll cut down on it and you don't have to worry that your just "giving up" on the game because it doesn't mean that at all, it just means the game isn't important enough to be something you need to complete any time soon. Like for example, some games I removed from my backlog were: Snake Pass, Slime Rancher, games I've never even touched but want to (they can go on the backlog once I get around to it). Games I no longer have access to; That means if your Xbox 360 controller stops working, take it's games off of the backlog until you have a new controller again. That way you can focus on what's important and make your backlog feel smaller at the same time. Remove any planned replays from the backlog. No matter how optimised you think your backlog is you'll always manage to find something else to remove. There's quite a few more things I would like to talk about that are also quite important but I'm going to stop here as this is already quite a long piece of text and I've already covered most of the things I think that all people planning on going through there backlog should know. I certainly struggle with this. I've tried to stop viewing my backlog as an obligation and instead as a growing list of options and new things for me to try. It makes playing games more enjoyable, as I just go with whatever I'm feeling. Also, I feel less bad when I don't play a game I've been wanting to-- it's just "waiting for when the time is right" lol
I don't mind ads by Raid Shadow Legends (or any ad) in the video itself, because I can just skip it, but if it's unskippable, that's when it's a problem
As someone who has been playing terraria for about a decade, you should put it off until later. There is a massive learning curve on what to do and without friends that experience of learning is not the most enjoyable. Especially when you know it's a massive time investment and there are other games waiting for you. You could easily spend thousands of hours in Terraria so it can safely stay near the back of your log.
I mean I beat the moon lord after playing for about 122 hours. To play _thousands_ of hours you'd have to use mods, otherwise there just isn't enough to do

I'd recommend checking out howlongtobeat, which allows you to keep track of your backlog. It also obviously has the time to beat which is normally pretty helpful in deciding whether it's worth sinking the time into a game.
The play times by HLTB are way too low. The times they mention can only be achieved in the second playthrough when you know every puzzle, know how to beat bosses, never get lost finding your way, and die minimally.
I feel your pain man. It's very easy to get distracted and overwhelmed by all the games that there are, feeling like you're falling way behind in current progress when new games seem to come right around the corner every time. The backlog can pile up when you prioritize what is important to you. And it seems like, what you call running in place, but what I like to call a climb up an endless mountain. What I suggest is that you take a deep breather, first and foremost. If a game is hard to get into and it bores you then it's a tedious experience and you'll want to switch to a different one. Find your niche, find the genres or styles that really speaks to you and that you find very cool. JRPGs might not be your thing, but to me they look very nice and I find to be ones that I want to try playing when I get the chance. Same with strategy, hack and slash, and open world games. You aren't pressured to play all these games at once, you are only one person as I am. And that means you can only focus on one thing at a time. I suggest you consider your options and try some games that look interesting to you, if you like it then keep it and if you don't then return it. This is why rental companies exist by the way. Just calm down, meditate for a bit, and take care of your health for once man. Being a gamer is quite a commitment, but think of it like a relaxing experience. You're just lounging after a long day while playing a game and getting invested in it for many hours. Take your time with these things. And enjoy the ride as this is an opportunity that you, I and many others are very grateful to have. Hopefully you'll be in a better position then right now. Just take it easy. You're doing great ❤️
The positive side of backlogs is that when you complete a game, you don't just sit on your PC's desktop and then quit after 5 minutes, but you have lots of other games to play.

Keeping a backlog list is probably not productive because you already know intuitively what those games are, and you're just going to stare at the list (sometimes) and feel overwhelmed by all the hours you'll have to invest in. You can make one, but basically never look at it. I would keep a list of top games or favorite games instead. It may be useful to keep a list of games you don't want to play so you don't revisit them later. I highly recommend dropping a game if you play through it for a reasonable time and you don't like it so far.
Man you literally just put out videos that speak TRUTH. I feel the same way, first with being bored from games, then getting a large backlog, and NOW being confused wtf to play. Welcome to the club. I probably buy like 10-20 games a year between sales and games im hyped on. My backlog is probably 90 + games between ps4, ps5,switch, and pc. I didnt buy that many titles last year or this year but the damage is already done
I feel that games has lost its magic spark. I hate to come to the reality that im just getting older and its a part of growing up, but I dont fully yet understand if thats the reason but thats the situation im slowly accepting
Something i have noticed for me in that regard is that, after i have played games for around 14 years almost daily, 23now, is that there are barely new mechanics in video games that catch me like they did back then. To often do i realize in the first 10% of an game how i will abuse the game mechanics for the rest of the playtime. Witcher 3 combat jumps to mind. Or the last Assassins creed i played (Origins). Since then i have started to branch out in new genres that i would have no touched before becouse they were overwhelmingly different to my ususal games. Shooter/atmospheric"horror" with the Metro games gave me an suprising refreshing gameplay. Subnautica aswell. Though i did not know what i was singing myself up when i started my underwater journey. The next were round based RPGs like Pillars of eternity and Divinity:original sin 2 which i had to force myself to play in the beginning,(though i knew i would have to) becouse off all the lore and new mechanics. So what i am trying to say is, if you havent already, branch out and try new genres!
I generally find that the best policy (At least for myself anyway) is to play one game religiously until completion before purchasing anymore. I used to buy every single major game release but with work/family commitments I found I was getting majorly burnt out with each new game. Now I can take my spare time and enjoy it, becoming immersed in the world until either I have had enough of said game or played it through to a point in which I consider the game completed.
That's my goal! I have a little backlog and it still feels overwhelming because I feel like I want to try the next game. It I have more games installed I can't choose which one I want to play and i also kind of "fall out of it" and can't immerse myself. So right now I'm completing some games I wanted to try and also deleting some of those I feel like I don't "need to play". When I'm done, I'll always only buy 1-2 games.
One of the ways I get through my backlog is to put all the games I haven’t played on a wheel and spin. Or if you want to do a list: just get all the games you’ve started but haven’t finished and play through them (don’t force it tho), then when you’re done with that select a couple games you’re interested in and start a new list, just remember to keep it small
I like to play them in the order of the date of release so i cant kinda experience what someone would if they were keeping up with each game as they came out and its a good way to get a break from a franchise cuz there are other games released in between and obviously someone who was keeping up as the came out would have had to wait for the next entry would come out
SAME! Backlogs give me so much anxiety. One rule I've fully committed to is to never buy or get another emulator game until I finish most of my backlog. I've got about 50 games left so it's gonna take years. Rip any new releases
Everyone just play at a different pace for me going through my backlog seems to be easy as long as I am not terrifically busy at the time. Like the idea of someone spending months playing a 30-40 hours game just seems crazy to me since I can usually do that within a week or two depending on its quality or pacing. I get super excited when I see a jrpg like xenoblade chronicles 2 with a potential of around 200+ hours without even completing everything and get disappointed when a game is only 15hrs long depending on the price tag Either way a tip for those like me who like high hours or those who dont at all, whenever you want to play a game but are wondering how long it will be search up the game name and add hltb at the end so like Hades hltb It's user submitted scores on how long it takes, I have found it almost always accurate
As an Indian I am always surprised when people say they quit there jobs while 2 million people in India fight for a 300 dollars job with only 500 vacancy.
I honestly would love to have a year with literally zero new game releases because it getting to the point where as soon as I pick up a game from my backlog to play it, a game that I am interested in releases and I drop it to play the new game
Oof, those are some long games in your backlog. Fortunately, there are some shorter ones (superliminal lasts an afternoon imo) you can play in between the bigger ones, or "session-based" games (like Deep Rock Galactic or Slime Rancher), that can be played anytime without any real need to play continuously. Having a long backlog sucks, but just picking a few to play at a time and forgetting about the rest in the mean time helps a ton and makes the ones you are playing more enjoyable.
I had a lot of trouble getting through my backlog until 2016. I have been making significant progress (almost 1/3 of the way through) since. Here are the things that helped kept me going: 1. To make it less overwhelming I randomly pick 5 games and then I choose 1 from those 5 2. I usually have 3-5 games selected at once to avoid getting burned out by one of them 3. I don't pick all of the games I play based on step 1; sometimes there is a specific game I want to play, so I do 4. Sometimes I can't get into one of the active games so I "unselect" it and plan to come back to it later 5. I try to keep a good variety with the 3-5 games in terms of length, genre, and singleplayer/multiplayer 6. I have a year set for when I want to beat them all by which puts some pressure to keep me going I could say a lot more about the above points and some points I did not list. I could try to make a video expanding on my process and what I've learned during it if people think it could help solve this problem.
@@rosa8720 It's not without occasional struggles and doubt, but overall it's been worth it. I rarely feel like it's a job, and while I do wonder about my genuine enjoyment of each game I think it outweighs the fear of never getting to play any of the games I wanted to. Before my current method I would start but never finish so many different games because I couldn't decide which ones I really wanted to play. Ultimately it's a very personal journey. We can share ideas on how to tackle it, but each person has to find a way that works for them and continuously decide if it's still worth it.
As a teenager, I have made many mistakes. And having too many games is one of them, really, I have 400+ games and I usually spend more time deciding than playing. As I got older I noticed and I made my own system and I implore you should as well; play between a few games you get obsessed with until they have 100 hours or you are no longer obsessed. Choose another game. It whittles the deciding down from every day to once a month.
There definitely are some fun games to play, I've tried gamepass this month and finally had quite a lot of good chill times playing videogames, I'm kinda limited by download speed because my network is only 14Mbits/s do my download speed is really slow but there are some really nice games like doom eternal, sea of thieves, rainbow, etc the only problem is that most games obviously have a learning curve and require you to invest some more time and keep practicing and starting rock bottom every time just gets boring, for example they're pretty similar games but I just can't be bothered to play valorant after having played a thousand hours of csgo in the past 4 years, I'm just simply hated that feeling how the mechanics were very similar, yet distinct enough to make the game annoying for me

One thing I've learnt over the years is if I'm playing a really long video game or one with an open world, then I will choose small indie games to play in between. For example, I have been playing Forbidden West since it came out last year. Love it so so much!! But I take so long getting through it all, as I love love the experience, the side quests, the main quests... and so on. But I need a break every few months. So I'll fire up one of the indies in my backlog that I know is super short and I'm really interested in, finish it, then head back into my RPG. It's great to have a break... Accomplish another short game so it feels like I get somewhere and finish something before I head back into my main game. The other important lesson I've learnt over the years... If I've gotten the most out of the story, then I will leave that game and just never finish it. For me, I know that I'm awful at keeping my attention on games. And finishing them! So finishing a small game then going back to larger games, just helps me to keep any attention on the longer games and enjoy them much better
Yes but there aren't endless genres once you play every genre the games will just feel the same was each other. A lot of games all you do is shoot or stab stuff and whether its a new game or not its still going to be just that. And there are some genres people just do not like at all.
I don’t think of a backlog as a list to complete and eventually empty, but mostly just as a reminder and reference for when I’m looking for a new game. Gives me some place to looks and get some ideas of what I might want to buy next.
Great video. Not enough people are talking about this. I tend to come at this from the difficulty/accessibility angle. The online gaming forum community is rife with this petty sense of entitlement that every game that looks superficially amenable to them, should cater to them, specifically (see: Souls game releases like Elden Ring, or every Fighting Game release, ever), despite the fact that most of these communities consistently talk about how they can't clear their backlogs. Their sense of FOMO and desire to talk about these games on places like reddit/resetera or create content often overlaps, or even often supercedes their desire to actually play the game in the first place, and meet the game's design elements where they are. So instead, they complain about how "inaccessible" or "needlessly difficult" these games are, at the expense of communities/fanbases that enjoy these approaches to design, simply to cater to their petty sense of entitlement. The industry is currently so large (read: bloated) that there simply isn't enough time for one person to enjoy every high-profile release, let alone every game, period. You could literally spend that time complaining to play absolutely anything else. It's okay to miss out sometimes. You'll never be able hit every item in the bucket list during a life worth living. That's part of what makes life great and this extends to video games. Let fans that enjoy hard games without difficulty settings, enjoy those games, and go play something else.
Personally, I would say... just don’t have a backlog lol Since I don’t have the money to have a huge backlog, I found that it’s much easier to be bothered to play immediately after you buy a game (say, from a steam sale on a game you were looking at) than a game in your long list that feel like a chore. Playing a game should never be a thing you should’ve done, it needs to be the thing that you have fun with now Also, whenever I want to play a new game or there’s s sale, I just take a look at my Wishlist and see if there’s anything I want to buy. I don’t feel the need to play every good game there is, because I have years of time, and if I miss out on a certain experience, that’s ok
I get what you’re saying here, but if you can’t change how many games come out, you might just have to change your pacing. Commit to finishing a game before you go to the next one, and stop playing if you lose the motivation. Then, if you ever wear to go back to it, instead of it being an issue of the game not being played, it’ll be whether or not you think it’s worth your time after trying it for the time you played and losing interest. Alternatively, just do what I do and bounce around to what you feel like, and you’ll never be bored or burnt out. It’ll also feel like Less of a burden to do something to enjoy.

As a kid i could only play games if my parents bought me one and i never knew when/if i would be able to get a new game. I treasured each game i got bc of this and played and replayed them tons. The idea of a BACKLOG was ridiculous! As employed adults in a capitalist society it becomes easier to spoil ourselves silly. If 3 great games are coming out at the same time, it's just up to us to decide to be reasonable and just pick one instead of picking all of them.
Just get other hobby's I have quit playing games aside from playing a bit with friends and family why not learn how to code or something and forget about gaming for a year.

EXACTLY. I put all games in the current and future on pause. I've been playing older retro games, and going through all the games I never tried back on older systems and stuff! NO REGRETS. I feel no need to KEEP UP with every body else with every brand new game that comes out. And by the time I get around to a game it's a bit cheaper. I said to hell with all consoles (I have to buy a new one every few frikking years after all) and just stick with PC now. I've learned my lessons.

Sounds like the dumbest solution, but I try to follow a "TV Schedule" style when playing multiple games. That way I can still play my 80+ hour RPGs regularly and not get super burnt out. I'm also convinced that my backlog will follow me to my grave so theres that too.

Ignore trends, ignore releases, play whatever shit you want. Plan videogames on timed basis, not treating them as a to-do list. Say to yourself "Tonight I'll sit down and play videogames for two hours". When the time comes you sit down and play whatever game you want, hell perhaps even a couple of games. This is the biggest problem for all gamers, I have like 500+ games in my backlog but I've only finished like say 20 games in my lifetime. And only two were from this year Driver Parallel Lines and Republic Commando. My issue is i can get burnt out really quickly with them and don't really crave certain types of games and can barely keep up with the new releases I wanna try and by then I'm too broke to try them. (I need a job) I would need a new computer, and I want a vr headset and and the new generation PlayStation too which would cost a few thousand dollars as of right now. I didn't start getting back into gaming until March 2020, this also goes for collecting them too.

And I miscalculated probably there is a few games I forgot about in my childhood that I did complete but don't remember because it's been so long since I played it. This can get worse when you're playing online games with either battlepasses or seasonal events, and you feel the need to get those items while they're still available, not paying attention to any single player games.

My solution: Mark a few as high interest, keep that number limited to 5 or less and include only those games you feel like they will offer something unique to all the others. Also, if a game doesent genuenly hook you in a certain time just drop it.
This is one of the best advices in this day and age we live in, where there's an abundance of content in every way. I have just accepted that I won't be able to play everything that I want and that's okay. There's more to life than just gaming or consuming content in general. Games are meant to be fun, and when you feel that finishing them is "obligatory", I think it's time to take some time off and go enjoy something else in your life.

As someone who just recently bought a brand spanking new PC (1060 to 3070ti), I agree... I couldn't wait to play all the games I previously couldnt play, but then after being able to play them all I am completely overwhelmed. With over 400+ games on my Steam Wishlist, I am forever stuck thinking about the next game while playing the current one.

Me personally, i just abandon my backlogs.
Interest can change and games you were interested in months ago won't have the same impact compared to playing them immediately. It's better to play the two games you're interested in that month than to go through a list you continuously made.
I know that it's a hard pill to swallow because most people don't want to put their money on their backlog to waste, but i think its worth it to abandon your money than to constantly have your backlog haunt you till the end of time.
So while my opinion is controversial, i do believe that abandoning your backlog is the answer.

Yeah, honestly, I have a massive problem with long games. I think the best thing for a game to do is be short and sweet, but have great replay value. That way, those who really like the game can play it multiple times through and enjoy it, while those who will only play it once can actually complete it. This is one of the reasons I love Dusk by new blood interactive. I'm currently playing through Elden Ring, and as someone with very low patience, I highly doubt that I will get to the end of it, even though I personally don't have a backlog issue.

Didn’t feel like finishing it. Not sure if you played the older God of war games. The third installment is the perfect game imo: short and sweet. Not repetitive. I played GOW 3 at least 3 times and totally enjoyed it. Elden rings: same problem : looks like a huge and challenging open world game that I feel like buying but..I will probably never finish that game either.

I’ll never finish the yakuza games, they’re so good but they’re just stuffed with filler content and I hate skipping content in games
I finished the whole series and I felt so fatigue from them like seriously I had to take a huge break from it
I would take a 3 to 6 month break between each yakuza game. Otherwise it feels like you're playing the same game
As someone who has basically finished there backlog, I've learned so much from it since I started seriously dedicating myself to it in 2020. I ran into the exact same problem a few years ago. I started realising how massive my backlog really is, and it was quite dreadful to think I knew I would probably never complete it. I had over 100 games on my backlog, and I thought it would take me over a decade to beat them all even if I didn't buy anything new.
I'll list here all the lessons I learned and explain them as best I can.
1. Don't add games you don't already own to your backlog... EVER
2. Don't add games that are endless.
3. If your adding DLC to the backlog, only add story expansions (eg. The Witcher III: Blood & Wine)
4. Don't add the game you just started playing to your backlog. It adds a subconscious tension making you feel more rushed and stressed to complete it when completing it should NEVER be the main objective, but experiencing it. That also means if you start a game from your backlog, you should take it off of the backlog immediately, rather than after beating it
5. Always remember to take breaks. Take note of how long it typically takes to get burned out and take breaks BEFORE you even get the earliest signs of burn out, the best thing to do at this point is to go find something relaxing or just enjoyable that's unrelated to videogames.
6. When your playing a very large game like RDR2, TW3, BOTW etc. Also have something on the side that you can play in the times your not in the mood to continue playing. Something small like maybe New Super Mario Bros or relaxing games like, slime rancher.
7. Don't have more than one game from the same franchise in your backlog at once. This is something I noticed on your backlog when I saw that you have both Left for Dead 1 & 2 on the list. It adds to the tension of feeling that you NEED to complete the game your up to RIGHT NOW. If I'm playing Bioshock, I don't want it to be constantly playing on my mind that I still have yet to complete Bioshock 2 AND Bioshock infinite AND I still have to complete Fire Emblem: Three Houses. That's just an example and you may think there's no tension for you, but trust me, when you dedicate yourself to beating your backlog, it seriously knocks it out of you mentally if you don't know what your doing, so just the seemingly small amount of tension you may think this adds right now will feel huge half a year into your backlog journey.
8. Don't ever feel forced to finish a game your really not enjoying just because you already completed the previous games in it's franchise. I did this with Doom 3 where I played Doom 1 and 2 before going straight to 3 and I felt a huge pressure to complete Doom 3 despite everything I hated about it all because I thought if I didn't complete it I wouldn't have played the whole original series of games. This was literally the worst week I had in all of 2020 mentally and it just made me feel disgusting how I forced myself to complete the game despite all the hate I had for it. That week was the very essence of everything that was wrong with my attitude towards completing games through most of 2020.
9. And in relation to number 8, I learned quite a while after that experience when I decided to pick up Doom 3 again with no intention of beating it, just out of curiosity of how I would feel about the game now. I ended up actually quite enjoying it and learned that if you force yourself to play a game (even if it's a game you know you love) It hugely hinders the experience. It especially makes a an absolute SHITBAG of a game experience if you force yourself to continue playing a game you didn't even like much to begin with which is exactly what happened with me and Doom 3.
9. Now you might not do this yourself, but I made the huge mistake of trying to beat more games in the current month than I did the previous month and tried to, like it was some kind of competition, complete 1 more game every month than the last month. That's why I ended up completing 4 games each month from the start of march to the end of may 2020 and 5 games each month between June and July, so basically I completed 22 games in total in the course of only 5 months with almost no breaks because when I wasn't gaming I was at school doing year 12 (I know, I was so stupid dedicating my year more to my games than the last fricken year of school, I know that was stupid and I still don't understand how I even managed it)
10. Your "mood" for the games you feel like playing changes dramatically month by month so, as weird as this sounds, planning out the order in which you need to complete the games is a huge mistake. It really is best to just take things as they come. Once you've finished playing a game, that's the best time to start thinking about what you "feel like" playing in your backlog. Often times if you were say, playing Bioshock for example, and when you started the game, you thought "I really need to play Half Life 2 next for my backlog because it's been sitting on that backlog for years". Well by the time you finish Bioshock, you probably won't even be in the mood for Half Life 2 anymore because your "Game Moods" as I like to call them change all the time and it's usually quite out of your own control. The best thing to do is to accept it and play what you actually WANT to play at the time, after all, this should be about enjoyment, not ticking of all the games on a checklist.
11. Always be looking to "optimise" your backlog. Remove games you really don't need to have on there and you'll be surprised how much you'll cut down on it and you don't have to worry that your just "giving up" on the game because it doesn't mean that at all, it just means the game isn't important enough to be something you need to complete any time soon. Like for example, some games I removed from my backlog were: Snake Pass, Slime Rancher, games I've never even touched but want to (they can go on the backlog once I get around to it). Games I no longer have access to; That means if your Xbox 360 controller stops working, take it's games off of the backlog until you have a new controller again. That way you can focus on what's important and make your backlog feel smaller at the same time. Remove any planned replays from the backlog. No matter how optimised you think your backlog is you'll always manage to find something else to remove.
There's quite a few more things I would like to talk about that are also quite important but I'm going to stop here as this is already quite a long piece of text and I've already covered most of the things I think that all people planning on going through there backlog should know. As someone who has been playing terraria for about a decade, you should put it off until later. There is a massive learning curve on what to do and without friends that experience of learning is not the most enjoyable. Especially when you know it's a massive time investment and there are other games waiting for you. You could easily spend thousands of hours in Terraria so it can safely stay near the back of your log.

I'd recommend checking out howlongtobeat, which allows you to keep track of your backlog. It also obviously has the time to beat which is normally pretty helpful in deciding whether it's worth sinking the time into a game.

The play times by HLTB are way too low. The times they mention can only be achieved in the second playthrough when you know every puzzle, know how to beat bosses, never get lost finding your way, and die minimally.
I feel your pain man.
It's very easy to get distracted and overwhelmed by all the games that there are, feeling like you're falling way behind in current progress when new games seem to come right around the corner every time. The backlog can pile up when you prioritize what is important to you. And it seems like, what you call running in place, but what I like to call a climb up an endless mountain.
What I suggest is that you take a deep breather, first and foremost. If a game is hard to get into and it bores you then it's a tedious experience and you'll want to switch to a different one. Find your niche, find the genres or styles that really speaks to you and that you find very cool. JRPGs might not be your thing, but to me they look very nice and I find to be ones that I want to try playing when I get the chance. Same with strategy, hack and slash, and open world games. You aren't pressured to play all these games at once, you are only one person as I am. And that means you can only focus on one thing at a time. I suggest you consider your options and try some games that look interesting to you, if you like it then keep it and if you don't then return it. This is why rental companies exist by the way. Just calm down, meditate for a bit, and take care of your health for once man. Being a gamer is quite a commitment, but think of it like a relaxing experience. You're just lounging after a long day while playing a game and getting invested in it for many hours. Take your time with these things. And enjoy the ride as this is an opportunity that you, I and many others are very grateful to have.

The positive side of backlogs is that when you complete a game, you don't just sit on your PC's desktop and then quit after 5 minutes, but you have lots of other games to play.

Keeping a backlog list is probably not productive because you already know intuitively what those games are, and you're just going to stare at the list (sometimes) and feel overwhelmed by all the hours you'll have to invest in. You can make one, but basically never look at it.
I would keep a list of top games or favorite games instead. It may be useful to keep a list of games you don't want to play so you don't revisit them later. I highly recommend dropping a game if you play through it for a reasonable time and you don't like it so far.

Man you literally just put out videos that speak TRUTH. I feel the same way, first with being bored from games, then getting a large backlog, and NOW being confused wtf to play. I mean- it gets even worse considering I also play a lot of VR, meaning I have a completely separate game backlog of VR games!

True, it's very telling that a lot of the "gaming is dead" crowd almost alwats are people who stick to a tiny handful of games that eventually evolve beyond what it was during their "golden age".

Welcome to the club. I probably buy like 10-20 games a year between sales and games im hyped on. My backlog is probably 90 + games between ps4, ps5,switch, and pc. I didnt buy that many titles last year or this year but the damage is already done
I feel that games has lost its magic spark. I hate to come to the reality that im just getting older and its a part of growing up, but I dont fully yet understand if thats the reason but thats the situation im slowly accepting
Something i have noticed for me in that regard is that, after i have played games for around 14 years almost daily, 23now, is that there are barely new mechanics in video games that catch me like they did back then. To often do i realize in the first 10% of an game how i will abuse the game mechanics for the rest of the playtime. Witcher 3 combat jumps to mind. Or the last Assassins creed i played (Origins). Since then i have started to branch out in new genres that i would have no touched before becouse they were overwhelmingly different to my ususal games. Shooter/atmospheric"horror" with the Metro games gave me an suprising refreshing gameplay. Subnautica aswell. Though i did not know what i was singing myself up when i started my underwater journey. The next were round based RPGs like Pillars of eternity and Divinity:original sin 2 which i had to force myself to play in the beginning,(though i knew i would have to) becouse off all the lore and new mechanics.
So what i am trying to say is, if you havent already, branch out and try new genres!

I generally find that the best policy (At least for myself anyway) is to play one game religiously until completion before purchasing anymore. I used to buy every single major game release but with work/family commitments I found I was getting majorly burnt out with each new game. Now I can take my spare time and enjoy it, becoming immersed in the world until either I have had enough of said game or played it through to a point in which I consider the game completed.
That's my goal! I have a little backlog and it still feels overwhelming because I feel like I want to try the next game. It I have more games installed I can't choose which one I want to play and i also kind of "fall out of it" and can't immerse myself. So right now I'm completing some games I wanted to try and also deleting some of those I feel like I don't "need to play". When I'm done, I'll always only buy 1-2 games.
One of the ways I get through my backlog is to put all the games I haven’t played on a wheel and spin. Or if you want to do a list: just get all the games you’ve started but haven’t finished and play through them (don’t force it tho), then when you’re done with that select a couple games you’re interested in and start a new list, just remember to keep it small
I like to play them in the order of the date of release so i cant kinda experience what someone would if they were keeping up with each game as they came out and its a good way to get a break from a franchise cuz there are other games released in between and obviously someone who was keeping up as the came out would have had to wait for the next entry would come out

SAME! Backlogs give me so much anxiety. One rule I've fully committed to is to never buy or get another emulator game until I finish most of my backlog. I've got about 50 games left so it's gonna take years. Rip any new releases
Everyone just play at a different pace for me going through my backlog seems to be easy as long as I am not terrifically busy at the time. Like the idea of someone spending months playing a 30-40 hours game just seems crazy to me since I can usually do that within a week or two depending on its quality or pacing. I get super excited when I see a jrpg like xenoblade chronicles 2 with a potential of around 200+ hours without even completing everything and get disappointed when a game is only 15hrs long depending on the price tag
Either way a tip for those like me who like high hours or those who dont at all, whenever you want to play a game but are wondering how long it will be search up the game name and add hltb at the end

I honestly would love to have a year with literally zero new game releases because it getting to the point where as soon as I pick up a game from my backlog to play it, a game that I am interested in releases and I drop it to play the new game
God Of War was satisfying to finish, not super long but not super short either, just the perfect amount of challenge and content.
Oof, those are some long games in your backlog. Fortunately, there are some shorter ones (superliminal lasts an afternoon imo) you can play in between the bigger ones, or "session-based" games (like Deep Rock Galactic or Slime Rancher), that can be played anytime without any real need to play continuously.
Having a long backlog sucks, but just picking a few to play at a time and forgetting about the rest in the mean time helps a ton and makes the ones you are playing more enjoyable.

I had a lot of trouble getting through my backlog until 2016. I have been making significant progress (almost 1/3 of the way through) since. Here are the things that helped kept me going:
1. To make it less overwhelming I randomly pick 5 games and then I choose 1 from those 5
2. I usually have 3-5 games selected at once to avoid getting burned out by one of them
3. I don't pick all of the games I play based on step 1; sometimes there is a specific game I want to play, so I do
4. Sometimes I can't get into one of the active games so I "unselect" it and plan to come back to it later
5. I try to keep a good variety with the 3-5 games in terms of length, genre, and singleplayer/multiplayer
6. I have a year set for when I want to beat them all by which puts some pressure to keep me going
I could say a lot more about the above points and some points I did not list. I could try to make a video expanding on my process and what I've learned during it if people think it could help solve this problem.
@@rosa8720 It's not without occasional struggles and doubt, but overall it's been worth it. I rarely feel like it's a job, and while I do wonder about my genuine enjoyment of each game I think it outweighs the fear of never getting to play any of the games I wanted to. Before my current method I would start but never finish so many different games because I couldn't decide which ones I really wanted to play.
Ultimately it's a very personal journey. We can share ideas on how to tackle it, but each person has to find a way that works for them and continuously decide if it's still worth it.
As a teenager, I have made many mistakes. And having too many games is one of them, really, I have 400+ games and I usually spend more time deciding than playing. As I got older I noticed and I made my own system and I implore you should as well; play between a few games you get obsessed with until they have 100 hours or you are no longer obsessed. Choose another game. It whittles the deciding down from every day to once a month.
There definitely are some fun games to play, I've tried gamepass this month and finally had quite a lot of good chill times playing videogames, I'm kinda limited by download speed because my network is only 14Mbits/s do my download speed is really slow but there are some really nice games like doom eternal, sea of thieves, rainbow, etc the only problem is that most games obviously have a learning curve and require you to invest some more time and keep practicing and starting rock bottom every time just gets boring, for example they're pretty similar games but I just can't be bothered to play valorant after having played a thousand hours of csgo in the past 4 years, I'm just simply hated that feeling how the mechanics were very similar, yet distinct enough to make the game annoying for me
same thing with valorant, im used to csgo keybinds and i just thumble around in valorant, getting mad cuz i get a level 50 joins a mm against level 1

One thing I've learnt over the years is if I'm playing a really long video game or one with an open world, then I will choose small indie games to play in between.
For example, I have been playing Forbidden West since it came out last year. Love it so so much!!
But I take so long getting through it all, as I love love the experience, the side quests, the main quests... and so on.
But I need a break every few months. So I'll fire up one of the indies in my backlog that I know is super short and I'm really interested in, finish it, then head back into my RPG. It's great to have a break... Accomplish another short game so it feels like I get somewhere and finish something before I head back into my main game.
The other important lesson I've learnt over the years... If I've gotten the most out of the story, then I will leave that game and just never finish it.
For me, I know that I'm awful at keeping my attention on games. And finishing them!
So finishing a small game then going back to larger games, just helps me to keep any attention on the longer games and enjoy them much better

Yes but there aren't endless genres once you play every genre the games will just feel the same was each other. A lot of games all you do is shoot or stab stuff and whether its a new game or not its still going to be just that. And there are some genres people just do not like at all.

Great video. Not enough people are talking about this. I tend to come at this from the difficulty/accessibility angle. The online gaming forum community is rife with this petty sense of entitlement that every game that looks superficially amenable to them, should cater to them, specifically (see: Souls game releases like Elden Ring, or every Fighting Game release, ever), despite the fact that most of these communities consistently talk about how they can't clear their backlogs.
Their sense of FOMO and desire to talk about these games on places like reddit/resetera or create content often overlaps, or even often supercedes their desire to actually play the game in the first place, and meet the game's design elements where they are. So instead, they complain about how "inaccessible" or "needlessly difficult" these games are, at the expense of communities/fanbases that enjoy these approaches to design, simply to cater to their petty sense of entitlement.
The industry is currently so large (read: bloated) that there simply isn't enough time for one person to enjoy every high-profile release, let alone every game, period. You could literally spend that time complaining to play absolutely anything else. It's okay to miss out sometimes. You'll never be able hit every item in the bucket list during a life worth living. That's part of what makes life great and this extends to video games.
Let fans that enjoy hard games without difficulty settings, enjoy those games, and go play something else.

Personally, I would say... just don’t have a backlog lol
Since I don’t have the money to have a huge backlog, I found that it’s much easier to be bothered to play immediately after you buy a game (say, from a steam sale on a game you were looking at) than a game in your long list that feel like a chore.
Playing a game should never be a thing you should’ve done, it needs to be the thing that you have fun with now
Also, whenever I want to play a new game or there’s s sale, I just take a look at my Wishlist and see if there’s anything I want to buy. I don’t feel the need to play every good game there is, because I have years of time, and if I miss out on a certain experience, that’s ok
You should add War for Cybertron/Fall of Cybertron to the backlog, those are pretty good titles
I get what you’re saying here, but if you can’t change how many games come out, you might just have to change your pacing. Commit to finishing a game before you go to the next one, and stop playing if you lose the motivation. Then, if you ever wear to go back to it, instead of it being an issue of the game not being played, it’ll be whether or not you think it’s worth your time after trying it for the time you played and losing interest.
Alternatively, just do what I do and bounce around to what you feel like, and you’ll never be bored or burnt out. It’ll also feel like Less of a burden to do something to enjoy.

A lot of the games in it are old classics I feel obligated to play, only havnt played them yet cause I was like 2 when they came out, like the old CoD and Halo’s.
Wasn’t interested in shooters and didn’t enjoy them til now, that’s the main reason halo and cod are on there
Then I’ve got skyrim which I’ve restarted a lot but never beat, and Assassins Creed, beat first game and working on Ezio collection

As a kid i could only play games if my parents bought me one and i never knew when/if i would be able to get a new game. I treasured each game i got bc of this and played and replayed them tons. The idea of a BACKLOG was ridiculous!
As employed adults in a capitalist society it becomes easier to spoil ourselves silly. If 3 great games are coming out at the same time, it's just up to us to decide to be reasonable and just pick one instead of picking all of them.

EXACTLY. I put all games in the current and future on pause. I've been playing older retro games, and going through all the games I never tried back on older systems and stuff! NO REGRETS. I feel no need to KEEP UP with every body else with every brand new game that comes out. And by the time I get around to a game it's a bit cheaper. I said to hell with all consoles (I have to buy a new one every few frikking years after all) and just stick with PC now. I've learned my lessons.
On the one hand, this is one of the most relatable problems.
On the other hand, this is probably one of the most "first world problems" of all first world problems I can possibly think of.

Games require a lot of time. Even if you have time, you can get bored.
- Avoid Modern Ubisoft and EA Games
- Check yourself on steam sale. Do i really want this game?
- Don't play too many open world games. You can get bored of games.
Sounds like the dumbest solution, but I try to follow a "TV Schedule" style when playing multiple games. That way I can still play my 80+ hour RPGs regularly and not get super burnt out. I'm also convinced that my backlog will follow me to my grave so theres that too.

Relatable. I get close to finishing a game. Switch to another because I feel like it or it has just come out whilst intending to return to the other. Never return and it sits for years.
You don't need to finish games or complete lists. Playing video games is about the FEELING it gives you. Enjoy the moment of the games you are playing. Play what brings you the emotional response you're looking for.
