He mentioned her in the sewing room in the past. Apparently the book said he had his way with her and she only became part of the harem at Ruyi's insistance because of Halain's family's standing. It's no wonder why she didn't go out of her way to get his attention from the beginning. It also explains her devotion to Ruyi.
At this point in the story she is getting his attention for her own plans.
"Had his way" is a nice way to say that the Emperor raped her while drunk. But yes, after that, Emperor took her into his harem because she would never be allowed to marry since she was touched by him. The other option was becoming a nun but her standing was too high for him to just do that casually.

I know we all know the empress is such a villainess, but her actress really is top class. Her mourning scene with the emperor was really well done.

The empress was correct that his death was her fault, but not for the reason she thinks. Her attack on Ruyi causes this, and the sending away of her daughter to get married. Her actions also cause the loss of her own life.
