one note only: riding strapless TEACHES you how a board works, you learn how foot position changes-alters the turning radius, going upwind, being fast with starts in the waves after an wipeout. with straps you'll never get a feeling what a surfing is like..... and only when you are really good, you can mount straps (and a leash......), in REALLY big choppy waves to maximise your time on the water. travelling through the world, it is really funny to hear the discussions with guys not able to even waterstart a strapless board or jibe (save for tacking...) talking about riding ONE EYE...... there seems to be principles: first strapless, THEN eventually straped.
Thanks for video. I guess I like straps because I have windsurf background? I cant see the big benefit of strapless, but I hear its something about the feeling? Everything else is more difficult without straps? Maybee gybing is easier strapless? However, in small and easy waves I can se the fun in making things harder and dial in accurate skills. Anyway, with straps I step around a lot and get nearly the same freedom, the backfoot is only in the strap when surfing or jumping over big waves, which is such a fantastic possibility with wavekiting. This really differs from windsurfing in waves. Its so easy to jump those difficult ones, and I would never take off the straps for making that more challenging. Am I the only who asks a big "Why"? Strapless is even becoming a synonym with surfboard. Like strapped strapless is the right term for my strapped directional :)
There are no wrong answers here! I personally really like the freedom it gives,a nd I move much more than just the backfoot :) But I come from a normal surfing background, so that might have something to do with it.
@@appletreesurfboards Agree. Everything depends on the conditions. Where I surf chop and gusts are the norm. I see the strapless riders struggle in those conditions. No jumps, falls off the board etc. It looks very hard, and thats why I wonder why not straps and more possibilities? It is easier in challenging conditions and allow intermediates , like most of us are, to jump and rotate and all that. Especially the trend with strapless freestyle is near being mean to those weekend warriors. I guess it will be a lot of these boards cheep second hand soon, when people give up and return to twin tip. Just my opinions....
@@appletreesurfboards one more question: At 3:05 you explain the front foot position. Why isnt the inserts more forward in the board if the front foot should be more forward? I have my front strap in the most possible forward position, and I might place it further forward if that was possible.
@@halvortorgersen8741 we still have much nore demand for strapless boards, so I don't htink that will happen. Also, some boards are clearly better for strapless than strapped. wider tails for instance like on the Malus domestica, are not so nice with straps. But they do offer superior speed and upwind drive.
I’m currently riding strapless only, but I can see things get trickier in bigger swell. I just had a session in waves where the board just fell away over the back of the wave….would have liked straps then!! Question with strapless - leash or no leash? I know with twin tip the usual advice is no leash (tombstone 😮), but is it the same issue with a surfboard? Great vid, cheers.

Great video, thanks. IMO they are both great fun. I think straps have a place either in really big surf or high winds with messy surf. If it is very windy with lots of chop I prefer straps. Also, I can jump much higher and with rotations with straps at my skill level. Btw I ride an Applino and Malus Domestica strapless and a Klockhouse (in K++ build) with straps - no heel dents yet whereas my other brand customs get wrecked riding strapped ( a couple have snapped too). The Appletrees seem to be able to take it.
Hi there - love the look of your boards. Please can you help point me in the direction of the right set up. I can kite strapless and love it. However, I want a strapped board to do jumps and bankrolls etc... my skills are lacking to do this on a strapless board. In the UK are waves are pretty crap - well in the spot I ride. The board in your video was for big wave surfing ... but then you said its kind of set up to be used with staps... what board would you recommend if I want straps for twin tip style tricks...? Please let me know . Thanks
Hi, we don;t advise to do ( a lot of) strapped tricks on any surfboard. All our boards can handle quite a bit of abuse, but at the same weight of a twintip setup, but with lots more volume, you can never expect the same strength. so over time, a twintip will last, and a surfboard will wear out, even ours. If you want, we can add inserts to any model we make, as a custom option, but advise to use it for security in bigger surf, and not for constant jumping. Thanks!

We always teach people without straps first for this exact reason :)
