There's an old Frets Magazine here (1980s) with Chet on the cover, and at the end of the magazine interview they ask Chet, "Is there any guitarist you would pay to see and hear?" Chet responds with just one name: Doyle Dykes.

thanks for showing this video.Doyle is a personal friend of mine and we will text each other periodically. He also plays a George Harrison medley and Classical Gas amazingly!!! Once I met with him at a cowboy church in Texas and he also did an hour sermon. He said he was a preacher in St Petersburg, Fl.. I'd known him for 10-11 years and never knew he could also preach. Best sermon I ever sat at. I love this man.

Thanks so much for this much-deserved appreciation for Doyle Dykes, Fil! Doyle is a better man even than his guitar skills. I encourage everybody to check out his Sunday Stringalongs. You'll get guitar brilliance, followed by sincere preaching and teaching, in the most loving way. His greatest gift!

I met Doyle at Fairview PA at a Taylor Guitar show. What a very talented musician and a more amazing individual . What a humble and kind man!
I told him I was going home and smash my guitars after hearing him. He said” oh don’t do that - you enjoy playing don’t you?” One of the very best!

Thanks for that Fil! That's some fine, complicated and unflashy pickin'. Masterful. Yup, that's how it's done. How cool that You, young man, have such a great appreciation for the rock elders and you express your feelings and observations so we'll. You really open up a deeper appreciation from your fans for you, those you review and cover, and for the history of music and the musicians. Doyle and ALL the other musicians that you highlight owe you a debt.👌 ROCK!🎸

I met Doyle in Louisiana in 2005 when he played a series of small concert formats at Guitar Centers.
He was a spokesman for Taylor at the time.
He was a real great guy. He saw me at several events and the last one was Gulfport Mississippi.
He had forgotten something in his Lincoln pickup truck. He threw the keys to me to retrieve what he had forgotten. His playing impressed me ang with his Godly presentation.

That’s by far the most amazing guitar medley I’ve ever heard. I lost track of the perfect allusions to Chet tunes. Being able to come up with this arrangement is equally impressive with the flawless execution of the playing. Doyle is not only one of the very best guitarists of all time. He’s also one of the nicest people on the planet! God bless him.

Doyle plays with incredible energy and is as smooth as glass. Beautiful chord voicings and sweet tone. Dave Pomeroy is an amazing bassist who also plays with great energy and is a big part of the music scene in Nashville. I met Doyle at NAMM in Nashville in the 90's. I will be seeing him again performing at the CAAS Convention (Chet Atkins Appreciation Society) in Nashville, July 2022. He is one of my top 5 all-time favorite guitarists.

A guy and his guitar, amazing how entertaining that can really be. While watching this I came to the realization how thankful we should be living in our current times. Just think of the millions of shows and artists over the past decades that were seen by an attending audience but almost never were they able to record it unless it was for a television show. Now, thanks to the advent of cell phones, almost everything is recorded and we all can enjoy these amazing talents from all over the world. Thanks for another great analysis video.

Thanks once again Fil. I’ve heard Doyle perform live several times. I mean I grew up learning and playing rock and then blues from the late 60s on. So the first time I heard him play this finger style genre I didn’t think I would really care for it. But was I wrong. Like you say I got pulled or sucked into that bubble. There are many greats like him that now with age and experience I have come to appreciate them. One time I heard and saw Doyle play his medley of ‘Classical Gas’ and ‘25 or 6 to 4’ and was blown away and knocked over. Couldn’t believe my eyes or ears. At a break I walked up to him and told him I liked both of those songs and have messed around playing them on my own guitar but told him I’d give up my ‘G’ string just to have one of his picks. Not really expecting it he reached out and handed me his thumb pick he had been using to play with. Man what a guy! And he didn’t even ask me for my guitar string. Ha.

Seen him pay at Taylor clinics 3 times. The first time, he played for 30 minutes, absolutely flawlessly. He then stopped and said to the audience: Anyone got any questions? One wag answered: Can you play a bum note and make us all feel better! The night went absolutely fabulously. Not seen anything like it before or since on acoustic guitar.

He and I picked a round of it at Christmas, even though his Parkinson's has advanced so much this past year, he still owned that flat-top like nobody's business! But, nothing like this Cat! Dykes is at a whole different level, without a doubt. Fil, your dedication to these clips, and the hours of research you obviously put in, is mind-blowing! I don't know how you do it. Doyle is not only one of the best guitarists in the world, and is down to earth and humble. He is truly a man of God. Doyle is friends with an old pastor of mine and came to our church to play. I had the honor or not only playing a few songs before he took the stage but he also played along with me on one of the songs I did. He didn’t have to do it, and he seemed to enjoy playing along. What a great guy. God bless Doyle as he keeps on keeping on!

Amazing player, his "Wabash Cannonball" features bending the B string up a half step from behind the nut, between the E and B tuning pegs, to give it that country twang. He uses all kinds of alternate tunings. Another stand out tune of his (with an awesome back story) is "White Rose For Heidi."

i think its worth a mention, those harmonics are hard enough to play when youre tying to hit just one note with one open string, and there he is actually finger picking the whole chord as well.. which just takes some thing thats extremely hard to get down to a completely new level of 'holy crap did i just see that'... thats some insane skills to get down..

(Searches the floor for his dropped jaw) - Damn. I wasn't prepared for that. Not just fast, but so melodic. "Virtuoso" to me means that there's no technical barrier between the musical thought and its expression on the instrument. And he's definitely a virtuoso. Damn.

    • @alan2a1l
      @alan2a1l 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Just thinking about the number of genres he covered in that one song... !! 40's Jazz up top, Folk Picking/Bluegrass, Roaring 20's (for Lover Come Back to Me), Flamenco rasgueados, of course some Chet Atkins octave runs, ... that was beyond sophisticated; he uses everything, in service of the music, and never dropping a beat. That was a walk in the park for the bassist, Dave Pomeroy, not having to cover for any occasional lapse. That's music-making at its best.

A couple of things you might want to know: Doyle uses the thumb and forefinger on his right hand when he is playing the artificial harmonics; he doesn’t use any other fingers on his right hand to play them. And, Doyle convinced his mother and father to invite Barry to their house for dinner, not the other way around.

The man is liquid lightning!! He is also doing "subtle" (or not so subtle) alternate chord arranging that is atrip!! Most of us have heard these songs and immediately recognize the tune for what it is but here's Doyle, at the speed of an F-22, doing alternate chords that make the piece unique and his own. He amazes me every time.

I’ve met Doyle several times. Great down to earth guy. He also turned me on to GHS strings and got me on their artist list.
His kids are also amazing players.

Fil, so happy you're giving finger-style guitarists (ala of the Chet Atkins/Merle Travis school of fingerstyle) their due credit. I've watched your reviews of Doyle, Tommy Emmanuel, Richard Smith and others. One young Australian guitarist you haven't analyzed yet is Joe Robinson. His head exploding speed and technique is amazing, as is his versatility. Also you should check out his acoustic cover of Santana'a Europa.

Doyle is right there with Tommy Emmanuel at the top of finger style guitar. They actually play together on numerous occasions. Thanks for posting Fil

Fil...thanks for featuring Doyle! I first encountered Doyle Dykes in a tribute to Chet Atkins produced by Gretsch Guitars, which, incidentally also features Richard Smith, Steve Warner (CGP) and others. Well worth the hour to watch (th-cam.com/video/6jC1xrYF0MM/w-d-xo.html). One thing that you did not mention about Doyle's style is that he does not do "pull offs", he does "push offs". In other words, he pushes his fingers up, as opposed to pulling his fingers down, if that makes any sense. Anyway...thanks again for featuring this truly great musician!

Doyle Dykes is an incredibly talented musician, and he truly embodies the spirit of Chet Atkins’ legacy. His playing is not just a tribute; it's a vibrant continuation of a rich tradition.

Doyle Dykes played at a local guitar store in my small hometown about 20 years ago. Very nice guy and amazing guitar player!

Hey again Fil, I don’t mean to fill up your comment section, but you mentioned you weren’t certain if you were pronouncing “The Grand Ole Opry,” correctly. As someone who was born and raised about 120 miles from Nashville, and have been there several times as a kid when it was in the Rymer auditorium (no I don’t know the correct spelling.lol.), your pronunciation is pretty spot on, albeit with a nice accent. Just wanted to share.
    Rock!!!

I had the extreme pleasure of getting to hang with Mr. Dykes,
Albert Lee, Doc Watson.and a few other six string Gods for a week ..while they were filmong/performing the Primal Twang DVD
sitting next to Doyle when he is playing is other worldly, his left hand hardly seems to move compared to all the different chord voicings you hear coming from him.. He is the master of efficiency, he undoubtably has every possible inversion of every chord mapped out in his muscle memory because he rarely looks at his fingerboard and he just doesn't make mistakes.. Not only is he an amazing player, he has to be one of the nicest and most honest person ive ever met, his personality shines thru in his playing.if you haven't done a Albert analysis yet, well shame on you....Country Boy is him at his finest

Doyle is one of the most completely relaxed and totally in-control players ever. One of the true masters. Period.
