Thanks for that Fil! That's some fine, complicated and unflashy pickin'. Masterful. Yup, that's how it's done. How cool that You, young man, have such a great appreciation for the rock elders and you express your feelings and observations so we'll. You really open up a deeper appreciation from your fans for you, those you review and cover, and for the history of music and the musicians. Doyle and ALL the other musicians that you highlight owe you a debt.👌 ROCK!🎸

True that,on the same note,we all owe a debt to anything or anyone, that opens our appreciation into a broader non-biased love of all musical styles, like I always say, best channel/only one of it's kind!

I met Doyle at Fairview PA at a Taylor Guitar show. What a very talented musician and a more amazing individual . What a humble and kind man!
I told him I was going home and smash my guitars after hearing him. He said” oh don’t do that - you enjoy playing don’t you?” One of the very best!

thanks for showing this video.Doyle is a personal friend of mine and we will text each other periodically. He also plays a George Harrison medley and Classical Gas amazingly!!! Once I met with him at a cowboy church in Texas and he also did an hour sermon. He said he was a preacher in St Petersburg, Fl.. I'd known him for 10-11 years and never knew he could also preach. Best sermon I ever sat at. I love this man.

There's an old Frets Magazine here (1980s) with Chet on the cover, and at the end of the magazine interview they ask Chet, "Is there any guitarist you would pay to see and hear?" Chet responds with just one name: Doyle Dykes.

Amazing player, his "Wabash Cannonball" features bending the B string up a half step from behind the nut, between the E and B tuning pegs, to give it that country twang. He uses all kinds of alternate tunings. Another stand out tune of his (with an awesome back story) is "White Rose For Heidi."

Doyle is not only one of the best guitarists in the world, and is down to earth and humble. He is truly a man of God. Doyle is friends with an old pastor of mine and came to our church to play. I had the honor or not only playing a few songs before he took the stage but he also played along with me on one of the songs I did. He didn’t have to do it, and he seemed to enjoy playing along. What a great guy. God bless Doyle as he keeps on keeping on!

I've seen Doyle play a few times; nothing was as fun as seeing him play for the night of worship at NAMM a few years back. I was sitting in the back of the room with a friend who is a DD fan as well, and just watching a huge crowd of people who probably haven't heard him before. Even from the back, I could see jaws dropping. Talked to him this past year at NAMM, a true gentlemen and fine human being as well. Thanks for featuring Doyle!

Fil...thanks for featuring Doyle! I first encountered Doyle Dykes in a tribute to Chet Atkins produced by Gretsch Guitars, which, incidentally also features Richard Smith, Steve Warner (CGP) and others. Well worth the hour to watch (th-cam.com/video/6jC1xrYF0MM/w-d-xo.html). One thing that you did not mention about Doyle's style is that he does not do "pull offs", he does "push offs". In other words, he pushes his fingers up, as opposed to pulling his fingers down, if that makes any sense. Anyway...thanks again for featuring this truly great musician!

He and I picked a round of it at Christmas, even though his Parkinson's has advanced so much this past year, he still owned that flat-top like nobody's business! But, nothing like this Cat! Dykes is at a whole different level, without a doubt. Fil, your dedication to these clips, and the hours of research you obviously put in, is mind-blowing! I don't know how you do it. Thanks once again Fil. I’ve heard Doyle perform live several times. I mean I grew up learning and playing rock and then blues from the late 60s on. So the first time I heard him play this finger style genre I didn’t think I would really care for it. But was I wrong. Like you say I got pulled or sucked into that bubble. There are many greats like him that now with age and experience I have come to appreciate them. One time I heard and saw Doyle play his medley of ‘Classical Gas’ and ‘25 or 6 to 4’ and was blown away and knocked over. Couldn’t believe my eyes or ears. At a break I walked up to him and told him I liked both of those songs and have messed around playing them on my own guitar but told him I’d give up my ‘G’ string just to have one of his picks. Not really expecting it he reached out and handed me his thumb pick he had been using to play with. Man what a guy! And he didn’t even ask me for my guitar string. Ha.

i think its worth a mention, those harmonics are hard enough to play when youre tying to hit just one note with one open string, and there he is actually finger picking the whole chord as well.. which just takes some thing thats extremely hard to get down to a completely new level of 'holy crap did i just see that'... thats some insane skills to get down..

As someone who was born and raised about 120 miles from Nashville, and have been there several times as a kid when it was in the Rymer auditorium (no I don’t know the correct spelling.lol.), your pronunciation is pretty spot on, albeit with a nice accent. Two problems with your description:
    1. That is not a DDSM Taylor guitar Doyle is playing. The DDSM has a beautiful white rose on it, and “Chet” style fret markers. I also do not believe it was ever produced in a sunburst finish like the guitar he is playing.
    2. Barry Lackey went to Doyle’s house for Sunday lunch after he begged his mother to invite Barry so he could learn those cool guitar techniques that Barry was playing at his church.
But Freight Train is one of my favorite “Chet”-style songs Doyle performs. He’s a wonderful human being.

Great video Fil! Another great fingerstyle guitar review! You should check out Buster B Jones and Brooks Robertson if you want some more fingerstyle guys like this to review!

Thank you SO much Fil! Been waiting a long time for this one. Met Doyle once and he treated me like I was the guitar virtuoso :) He inspired me to play. A truly wonderful human being...

You might want to do an analysis video about Luca Stricagnoli's version of Sweet Child of Mine. Is it true talent or smoke and mirrors?

This guy gives Tommy Emmanuel a run for his money. Need to mention Jerry Reed, both Doyle and Tommy admired and learned from.

Wow! Mighty fine! Love his bass player, Dave Pomeroy, too. Phil, if you ever have the chance, please check out his all-bass solo project "Basses Loaded", or the video "The Day The Bass Players took Over The World".

Hi Fil! How pleasant to find you discussing a player i've somehow missed when returning here from a few 'netless weeks. It's going to be fun digging through Doyle's work. Here's a tidbit from 1960 for your subs and you. Not subtle, refined, or any associated notion, but lots of fun: th-cam.com/video/muKkVufgkAE/w-d-xo.html

Watching this video I reminded of another one... Hoping you didn't analyse this guy before. :-)
It's a very old video... Here it is: th-cam.com/video/TSUNbvb-DWg/w-d-xo.html
Total fingerstyle guitar by a Brazilian old musician, Baden Powell. It's a short video, but I believe you could find a whole lot of interesting things to say about it. :-)
