The Door in the Sea | A Celtic Folktale

  • 'A Door in the Sea'
A sailor journeys to the land beneath the sea and meets it's queen.
Also known as 'The Fairy Wind'
(or the 'the goblin boff' or 'the pixie guff')
This story was told by Micheal Ross from Dublin, who had it from a manuscript with these words: Eamonn a Burc, Ail Na Bron, Cill Chiarain, Cama Conamara; and he heard it from his father fifty years ago.
An example of the living oral tradition passed on from storyteller to storyteller over the generations.
This story is unusual for being set in the modern era, - the Age of Sail, yet carrying magical motifs of earlier Celtic Folklore and Irish Mythology involving journeys into the otherworld and encounters with the Sídhe.
This is my own version, heavily influenced by David Campbell's telling in his book 'Out of the Mouth of the Morning : Tales of the Celt'

    Fascinating.
My child passed away, and I have been channeling my grief into researching our ancestry. I ended up here tonight. All was still when he died, but then The Fairy Wind blew strong when he left us. I have never experienced anything like it. And then all was still again - very still.

First of all I am deeply and sincerely sorry for the loss of your child beyond any words that I could ever conjure. But I want to affirm what you've said with an experience of my own. I lived in Hammersmith for 25 years with my best friend in the world who was more like a brother to me than anything. He had severe Parkinson's Disease and one day when I was at work he passed away in the bath which was his favourite place in the whole house. My grief was beyond anything I have ever experienced in this world and I cried and I howled all day and all night. I had pain everywhere in my body as well as my heart my mind and my soul. I thought I would die from the grief. One winter's evening, several days later, I stood by the kitchen window and I begged and I cried and I pleaded with him to give me a sign. A sign that he still existed somewhere in the universe. Within three short minutes bolt of lightning blasted in the garden. Wind began to blow but the wind turned into a gale and the gale turned into a miniature hurricane. I have never seen or heard any weather condition like this before in England, let alone Hammersmith London. The wind swept round in circles and howled and The Lightning thrashed and the Thunder roared. I knew it was him moving through the weather beyond the veils. The kitchen window is slightly a jar and everything in the house was blowing and thrashing, including the pieces of paper on the cork board in the hallway outside. I've never known such a powerful five solid minutes of extreme and somewhat terrifying weather. I swear on my parents buried bones that this story I have told you is true. I could have put this story in the comments section but I wanted to give it to you directly as a way of confirming that your child is still very much alive....somewhere just beyond your perception of this third dimensional realm ❤❤❤

I thought the state of humanity was truly dire when you started with just, "Have you ever been outside?"
Oh no... what have we become?
Great video as always. Love the Celtic material.

I had no idea it was called a fairy wind. The funniest thing happened at the end of a festival I was vending at. It was a clear blue sky in May and at the very end of the festival, 15 mins to close, came a massive gust of wind out of nowhere. It blew tents over and up into the neighboring woods turning them upside down, sent my heavy wooden displays crashing down- no one was hurt thankfully! But it lasted a good 10 or so seconds. And can you believe it, the festival was a Fairy festival. haha I've never encountered anything like that before and I like to believe we had a visit from the fair folk that day.

You know, a very similar thing happened to me at a small festival. Sudden gust sent the stalls flying. Clearly the organisers hadn’t made peace with the land spirits!

Love your work! This tale is similar to Inuit (Eskimo) folklore of the tale of Sedna, who had her fingers cut off and was also sacrificed to the sea, and is said to be the wrath of the ocean 🌊

These past two days I’ve been fishing in some very hidden places. I’ve watched otters and kingfishers and cuckoos and watched the mayfly hatch and fly, mate and die. It’s not too whimsical to see them as fairies. They fly vertically looking like little people as they drift away in the sun. Anyway they are to me …..

Hello friend, you , your channel is for me the best channel on TH-cam.
I can't thank you enough for the sheer knowledge and the way you come across explaining it.
Do you have a website where I can purchase items .
I have PTSD, so forgive me if I go on a bit.
I live on Liverpool, but playout in Angelsey Wales. 😅 so to speak.
    Thank you for reading .

Thanks Alan! Love Liverpool. Such a great city. But still a city, I can see why Anglesey appeals. Magical, and healing place. Bet it’s really great for your condition, I’m sorry to hear about that.
In answer to your question, I’m working on a website that will have some bits on it. But meanwhile I have a ‘Redbubble’ store which has some Celtic inspired t shirts and things here:
