The catalytic converter underneath the engine is lot of the heat your feeling. Obviously removing the catalytic converter and putting an x pipe in it's place will really help out heat wise, it did for my Thruxton R.
The chains don't really don't require much maintenance these days except some cleaning every few thousand miles in dry weather more often if ride in the rain a bit. The o and x ring chains have all the lube you need. If you want to put some chain wax on after cleaning that helps keeping the side plates protected from rust.

Hello again Flat Cap (or, can I call you 'Dad'?)
You're the second person to note that the cat causes extra engine heat. I had no idea. I'm going to have to Google is 'cos you're the first person I've spoken to who has actually done it - and you say it 'really helped'. Very interesting - thanks for the comment mate.

@@chrisoftheot6272 I fitted a Motone X-pipe, I can't say that I have noticed any difference on it being cooler, but it does seem give a smoother response to the throttle at lower speeds

Morning Martin - interesting, and disappointing, that the X-pipe didn't help the heat issue. The TEC Bike Parts pipe says, 'Less back pressure and heat soak into motor to help with cooler running'. I suppose it's just techno-babble! Shame though...

@@chrisoftheot6272 You'll have to excuse my memory on the exact numbers since it as over three years I took them. I used an infrared thermometer to measure the heat with catalytic converter, free spirit x pipe and then Meerkat x pipe. I ran on a 30 minute loop then took readings at the base of the engine on both sides immediately after stopping with the bike idling.
The best I remember the engine was 10 to 15 degrees cooler with the x pipes than with the catalytic converter. This test was spread over a month or two so the conditions did vary however the catalytic converter was done in the spring so it was probably cooler than the test with x pipes.
I've had three aircooled Bonnevilles and my perception was that they ran cooler from the rider's perspective than a stock watercooled Bonneville .
I would say my Thruxton R without the catalytic converter is cooler to ride than my aircooled Scrambler, warmer than my T100 and about the same as my 2009 Thruxton.
I've yet to hear an argument showing how removing the catalytic converter would not reduce the heat soaking back in and raising the heat the engine produces. Maybe just more techno babble.

      @chrisoftheot6272  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Afternoon Dad (Okay?) - many, many thanks for this. I was stunned, again, with 'I've had three aircooled Bonnevilles and... they ran cooler... than a stock watercooled Bonneville'. Incredible! But, I suppose, no more so than finding the Sportster ran cooler than the liquid cooled Speedmaster.
So, definately not 'just more techno babble' - far from it. Clear, simple explination coupled with some excellent real-world experimentation. Superb - thank you! I have looked a good deal at engine temperatures (for Harleys) and found that an additional oil cooler reduced the temps on some M8 models by about 15 degrees also. This is no small feat. Your findings have confirmed that I need an X-pipe, so thanks for the clarification. And thanks for all your efforts too - much appreciated.
      Cheers,
      Chris

I have had my Sportster for 25 years and 400,000 miles on the original engine and 37 back tires and 17 front ones and 3 belts in 25 years. Just had the carburetor cleaned for the first time in 25 years. Sportsters are rebuidable forever and reliable and dependable transportation. I have had my Triumph Tr-6 with a hard tail and magneto for 40 years. Replace the camshafts and sludge trap was almost full. New camshafts and sludge trap and now she is good for another 50 years. Big crash bars save the bike. EFI makes bikes run hot as Hades. My Sportster with a carburetor runs 200* 2 up in Florida in the summer 🌞⛱️. New Triumphs require expensive dealer serviceing. Not DIY friendly. Chain drive is messy and expensive to replace. All motorcycles should have hydraulic valve adjustment and belt drive.

Great observations and suggestions. About engine heat; I wear mid-calf padded leather boots with kevlar-lined jeans! The main complaint I have is the high-gearing of the Bobber. The 5th gear (4500 RPM) runs at 154 km/h with stock sprockets. The 6th gear (@4500 RPM) runs at 171 km/h! I rarely reach 5th gear and never ride in 6th gear on public roads.

I just bought a 2022 Speed master and agree with all you have said and done. And I love it, so comfortable a bike. I have only so far put on a battery tender and a booster plug to help with jerky throttle. I have ordered some Motone parts and a decat. I'm hoping the decat helps with it running so hot. I love the sound just as it is really same colors, I would like to put some knee pads on but I'm sure the paint stripe won't match the Union Jack strips. Hello from Ohio.

    Hello Chris,
Really enjoyed your video and it was great to see your custom parts. I've gone down a very similar route with my Speedy (Same model as yours) and I totally agree: it's all about getting the bike set up and customised for your own pleasure.
I too have spent a small fortune on "upgrades" but each one has brought a smile to my face. Similar brass bits from motone (even bought the brass tyre valve caps). I went for a Dart Marlin screen mainly because of its minimal looks compared to the Triumph ones. It also is rock steady although clearly much has a smaller surface area. I fitted Triumph Floorboards to mine which, for me, gives a much more comfortable ride. I can move my feet around a little rather than just having them on the forward pegs. I took the pillion pegs off mine and used the same finisher kit etc. I have also used a "Tail tidy" from Maund Speed in Pasadena which makes the back end more appealing: I didn't like the rear number plate light and reflector hanging down. The tail tidy complete with a small, but legal gel plate was the look I preferred. I fitted a pair of Hitchcox small drag pipes because I loved the look and the sound: I did take the cat out and replaced with a Tec X-pipe but that combined with drag pipes made the sound-track too obnoxious. After a week I put the cat back in which reduced the sound to a level I can live with. I was waiting for Motone to re-stock their "Bedlam" pipes (they are drag pipes but with internal baffles) but they've been out of stock for over 10 months now and I can't get a date from Sam (at Motone) as to when they may have some more available.
I hadn't considered the black tear-drop mirrors before as the OEM ones gave such good vision. However I've ordered a pair today (£54-Ebay) so will give them a try. I couldn't get comfortable with the "comfort seat" that was supplied with the bike so ended up buying a standard seat of Ebay and having a local trimmer reshape the seat with new foam and a black diamond stitched cover. It's not armchair comfortable but much better than stock plus looks superb.
Two final points: You didn't mention your engine bars. Which ones are they? I quite fancy a pair but Like the wrap-around ones (Hepco&Becker) rather than the sticky-out ones. I also think I'd have them in black.
Belt Drive. I'm sure you're aware that there is a kit out there for about £1000. The deal-breaker for me considering the kit however is the need to cut the chassis and fit a bracket. I know of one fellow owner who has the belt drive kit and really sings its praises.
Over the winter I'm considering a DNK TuneWorks ECU map flash to release some more mid-range power although ideally I'd wait for the Motone Bedlam pipes and remove the cat at the same time.
    Thanks again for your video.

Afternoon Craig - many thanks for the fantastic message (and compliments). 🙂
Interesting that you've thought about the ride in such a similar fashion to me. We are obvioulsy both geniuses...
I did look at the Dart screen, but decided against it in the end. (Bigger is better for Winter, I think.) The footboards: yes, they are lovely. However, I ended up buying a new bike (erm, accidentally, so to speak...), which blew the budget all to bits. I love the Triumph footboards but just can't afford them. I've never heard of the Maund Speed so I Googled their tail tiddy: that is nice! It does clean up the back well and is now added to my wish list. More expense... thanks for that.
I'm not fussing with the exhaust as it (the only bike in the world) which sounds good standard. When I grow up and I'm rich, I may get some pea-shooters, but for now, standard is fine. (I'm glad you found the £54 mirrors - they're great, you'll not be disapointed.)
It was a good idea with the seat. I bought a standard one (eBay again, £45, I think) and got it re-manufactured by Russell Cycle Products. Expensive, but worth every penny. The crash bars are standard Triumph bars. They actually don't stick out much - maybe not even enough! But they were part of the purchase deal, so I went with them. (I'd have prefered black.)
Michael (below) also mentions the belt conversion. This I'd love to do. But another grand is out of the question... until I grow up and become rich. It's got to be a must have item, but cutting the frame?! How scary is that!? I'll have to look into it - I've never knew a belt conversion was even an option.
I'm not really worried about tuning - which I understood to be difficult with 'anti tamper' Triumph software. I like torque, so I'd like to add Nm, rather than hp. (What's metric for hp?)
      Thanks for the comment Craig.
      Cheers,
      Chris

@@chrisoftheot6272 I agree that the belt drive kit is expensive: I'm not rich either and most of my bike-related purchases are about £20 (as far as my wife knows). However, given I'm aiming to keep the bike until I curl my toes I would spend the £1k if it didn't involve cutting the frame. The problem is compounded when you look at the labour costs of getting a "more skilled" person to undertake the job. If only Triumph fitted them as standard or at worst a factory option?
One point I forgot to mention is that I would dearly love a side-mount reg plate holder to further tidy the rear end but given the need for a paddock stand I don't see any way of achieving the required clearances.

      @chrisoftheot6272  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Afternoon Craig - like you, I'd be getting the dealer to install the kit, so it would be very expensive. Cutting the frame seems really scary - but the blurb on ARH Custom says it's just a bracket. Maybe not too bad?

You've mentioned the lack of an IMU on the Speedmaster. Did your Sportster come with one? Also, have you looked into the potential of adding an IMU from Triumphs other models?

    • @chrisoftheot6272
      @chrisoftheot6272  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Evening Vin - I'm very pleased you asked this (see my IMU video). When I asked the same thing in the Harley and then the Triumph forums, I was virtually laughed off the page. Not that that would stop me...
IMU is not an option on the Speedmaster, alas. According to: motofomo.com/motorcycles-with-cornering-abs-imu/#triumph-motorcycles-with-optimised-cornering-abs
some Triples and Scramblers have it, plus the Tigers and Rocket, but the Rocket, for instance, does not have a full deck, like the Harley Glides or Goldwings, etc.
I asked at the Harley dealership and the serivce guy, Jamie (somewhat shocked), asked the tech guy who said it might be possible to put a Glide RDRS (the Harley IMU system) onto a Sportster but it would be impossible to set up completely and would show constant errors. That 's the most informative answer I got (when I had my beloved Sportster).
My feeling is now that each bike model MAY require 'personal' tuning for the IMU... But, since a slip, or down-shift lock, or braking skid, or even the angle of attack into a corner (etc.?) must be fairly uniform since 'straight' is always the same, one wheel following the other, lateral slip, etc. are all realative to the fixed road, not the bike's size or weight.
      But, I could be wrong.
Anyway, it's my believe that it must be possible to add an IMU to a bike, although I assume it would need a pukka ECM (or ECU in Harley speak), so no pre-EFI, I would imagine. BUT, it looks like it would be way too expensive - although I'd love to try it.
Maybe you can do it? Many would appreicate it - like me!
      Cheers Vin,
      Chris

I currently own a 2018 T120 Black and love riding it. Looked into getting a Speedmaster for longer jaunts. But I've found that here in the U.S. that there are 1) Not a lot of Triumph support. 2) GETTING PARTS. 3) Finding readily available aftermarket upgrade ENGINE PERFORMANCE parts if you choose to go that route. Triumph offers a lot of :bling' accessories , but little to no ENGINE PERFORMANCE parts. As with Harleys there are too many to list.

    • @chrisoftheot6272
      @chrisoftheot6272  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Morning Sarge - yip, upgrades are not so easy to get. Here in Blighty, the Triumph parts are readily available, but I'm very surprised that US support is poor. I thought there was a good dealer network over there?
But for me, coming off a much loved Harley Sportster, the terrible lack of after-market stuff is a huge shock. I suppose I was spoiled with the awesome Harley offerings, but I did not expect there to be so little available for Triumph (e.g. only 2 foot rest extensions in the world). And that's just contols & chassis stuff.
As for engine mods, forget it! One company, TECBikeParts.com in Newcastle, do offer some interesting parts - like a crank set - but these don't seem to fit 2020+ bikes 'cos of software guff. And there aren't many performance mods anywhere else: exhausts & air filter kits seem to be about it. (Unless you want to go nuts and fit superchargers and stuff - but this is very specialist.)
I expect your 2018 Bonnie will work with the TEC Bike Parts bits, but replacing the crank seems extreme...
It is one thing I miss about Harley, but that said, with some solid research and time, I have found the bits I wanted; it's just more difficult with Triumph than Harley... Although Harley are in a customising class of their own.
      Cheers Sarge,
      Chris

I've ridden and seen most every brand. I have a 2014 Thunderbird LT with all options possible. The only thing I'd change on the LT is to give it the shape of the Speedmaster gas tank. I'd have had to pay twice the price I paid to get anything close to the performance of the LT. 6 gears, a nearly 6 gallon gas tank and has a great seat. I've seen that seat on the newer Speedmasters.
Chris, thank you for your honesty on what you feel are some areas which might need or could need improvement of the Speedmaster.
Interesting point you make about the heat coming from the water 💦 cooled engine. I'll have to check it out as I've decided to start looking around for a Speedmaster. I know my LT runs much cooler than any air cooled V-Twins I've owned.
Did you have to add the cruise control or did it come as standard equipment?
Also thanks for the heads up on the fairings. I live in Southern California about 3 miles from the beach and there are times when you don't want or need a fairing or windscreen on the bike.
British Customs is only about a 20 minute ride from my house. I'm sure I'll want the exhaust a bit more authoritative without being obnoxious.
I'm going to look this weekend and did see that chrome special with the red gas tank with chrome also covering part of the tank. It really looked striking .
If you think of any more pros and cons with the Speedmaster please let me know.
    Thanks again

Many thanks for your kind words Weazzell. I thought I was the only one who didn't like the Thunderbird tank - thanks for the validation! I agree, a flat bottomed (Bonnie) style tank would be nicer; I call it the 'heavy tear-drop' shape. (Like the old Z1/900/1000.)
Yip, the heat is crazy. One day I'll get an X-pipe because many have said they reduce heat significantly. But I can't afford it just now (plus, it's Winter here in the Northern Hemisphere so not such a problem). 🥶
I bought mine because of the electronics - traction and cruise especially (both are standard). I think I covered all the best and worst bits in the video, but, I've had my Speedmaster about 6 months and it's spent more than 1 of those months at the dealer having warranty repairs. 🤯 In fact, it's at the dealership now because it's stopped charging the battery...
But don't let that put you off! I said in one video that Triumph should get an award for getting so much bike into such a small space: that's the best thing about the Speedmaster. It is a big, heavy bike but it just doesn't look or feel like it.
      Cheers Weazzell,
      Chris

@@chrisoftheot6272 It's not that the LT tank is ugly . It's that the Speedmaster's is perfection from every angle you leak at it from. I guarantee that had if Speedmaster tank was available, they be selling the " Speed Bird" like Mc Donald's sells hamburger 🍔 s. .

Morning Weazzell - I really like the 'Speed Bird' idea! 🖖 I've long disliked the way Triumph fail to 'develope' their models properly: a full body kit for the Rocket & Thunderbird, for instance, since both are natural cruiser-tourers. I believe the Thunderbird would sell today if it had hard bags & fairing options: it's a fab platform.
I'm not keen on the Thunderbird tank, the way it drops at the back, though it's not too bad. But the 'heavy teardrop', with a flat bottom, really does it for me. The Speedmaster has a wonderful shape - although it's too flamin' small - and the old (air cooled) Speedmasters also had a good tank shape.

@@chrisoftheot6272 Everyone is different but in my case there was a little short term discomfort for a huge gain in flexibility. My back and shoulders used to become very sore after 30 minutes. I recently rode all day covered 350km with little more than an ache which went with a stretch. Just find a good musculoskeletal Physio often sports Physiotherapy good. I also followed up with a personal trainer to improve strength. Good luck

Morning Ron - it seems that physio really works. I asked a lady the other day who has significant back pain (from falling off horses) and she said the same as you; a few days of pain, but a massive improvement afterwards - which seemed to last her several months. I will have to sign up.
      Thanks Ron,

@@stevepalmer5670 Hi Steve - fair enough. But I did 'buy another bike': the Speedmaster. Are you thinking that I spent £16 grand on top of the purchase price (i.e. £28k)?
I went through the process in my 'Next bike...' video. It's not just about having a nice bike, it's also about mental health management. (I've spent all my adult life - many thousands of years - fighting depression, and riding really helps).
Which bike would you have spent £16k on, Steve?
