I just had my top 2 removed today and was told that my roots were too close to my nerves on the left side (i didn’t bother to ask about the right side because it wasn’t recommended for removal but I should have and will when I go back for my follow up in a week). My dentist did mention Coronectomy being a possible option but couldn’t say what procedure would be best until I get a CT scan. She then referred me to a specialist to get it all figured out. In hindsight I remember when I had my left Molar extracted a few years ago the left side of my chin was numb for a few hours…I thought it was the anesthetics but I do remember kind of feeling uneasy about it since I hadn’t experienced that with other extractions on the lower right side but since I never heard of nerve damage risk until now I had no reason to freak out. So from what I gather my then Dentist failed to inform me of how close the tooth was to the nerve and just stormed the hell in there lol. I can find humor in it today but the reality is his disregard could’ve been costly for me, thank God it wasn’t. Also all the times I’ve been to the dentist (since 17 until now) never was I ever told that removing my wisdom teeth early could minimize risk in the future. They all said “do they bother you? If not leave em alone”. They said that about all 4 even though the tops were nowhere near any nerves. Well years later and 2 successfully removed here I am with all of you scared and learning from all those who came before us and those currently in the same place as us as well as all the Dr./Dentist that took the time to give us the info we may not get from an overworked surgeon during office hours. As I lay here with my head uncomfortably elevated with sutures in my mouth craving food I can’t eat with a slight headache, I’m thankful that we are all here getting the valuable information we need to make informed decisions moving forward. I’m praying that we all are blessed with caring surgeons with anointed hands. Lastly if you’ve recovered or not please share your experiences as well as updates negative or positive. We would love to know if you are still in recovery or has recovered. When we post we become apart of a community so please stay the corse because you’re story is extremely valuable to us and those that will join this community days to years later. God bless you all and I will update you guys so check back periodically. For now I have to wait until I get CT scans done. ❤️

It’s more common to hVe the damage be more extensive on the bottom, don’t lose hope! Go read my reply to your comment your face and neck will be swollen for awhile maybe two weeks. Or a week if you’re lucky I suffered from dry socket through so mine did last longer than normal. An so they mentioned the nerves was to close and went ahead an did the procedure anyway?

I'm 34. My oral surgeon said the risk was only a 2% chance of any nerve damage at all, and of those people, the nerve damage would only be permanent in a portion. So, I decided to take the risk. I'm on day 11 of wisdom teeth surgery recovery, and the top of my tongue is still numb. It kind of feels like it's burnt. I hope it goes away. Now that I'm researching more, it seems like nerve damage is much more common than just 2%.

How are you feeling now? Would you be able to keep the comment updated? I’m 25 and have had braces twice. Going in the seconds time I was scheduled to get my wisdom teeth removed but once they got my x-rays they told me it was risky & said if there not bothering me I should just leave them. The problem is my teeth immediately shifted back after the second set of braces bc my wisdom teeth keep pushing them all forward and crowding. It’s turned my face a different shape and I can not stand to look in the mirror. Any time I go out all I could think about is how much I hate myself bc of my teeth and wanna get braces back on but don’t know if I’ll just cause more damage to my face in the process. Thank you for sharing, I hope and pray this goes away for you. If you feel comfortable I would love to know your opinion on if it’s worth it

@@vanessadavis5771 Hi, yes, I'd be happy to keep updating so anyone who reads this will know my experience. I'm on day 16 now, and the numbness in my tongue is a little better I think. I don't notice it as much, but it's definitely still a little numb. I hope that means it's getting better. My jaw is very stiff, and I can't open very wide. It also hurts to chew anything that's not soft, and one side of my jaw is popping when I yawn or try to open wide. I just had a follow up appt with my oral surgeon, and he said to apply heat and stretch my jaw. He thinks it will all go back to normal eventually and that the popping is due to the tightness on one side. However, because I have these issues, he wants to see me again in 2 weeks.
If I were you, I would go see an oral surgeon who does CT scans instead of x-rays. CT scans are a 3D image instead of 2D, and the oral surgeon will have a much better idea if the wisdom teeth can be removed safely. I read a study that said that 80% of wisdom teeth have issues and need to be removed at some point in life. They can get cavities even though they're below the gums because germs can still get in. The CT scan makes it easier to see if there are any cavities in these teeth. Wisdom teeth also sometimes get infected. If you wait until you're older like me and you end up really needing them removed for your health, your healing is delayed and the surgery can be a little more harmful. If the CT scan shows it's safe to remove them, I would advise to do it now. Also, by the time we turn 30, our bones reach peak bone mass, so it's best to do the surgery before then.
I've never had braces, so I can't relate to that. I'm so sorry you're having issues. I bet it doesn't look as bad as you think, though. Some things I'm reading say wisdom teeth don't affect the outcome of braces, so I'm wondering if maybe your teeth have shifted for some other reason, like maybe you needed a retainer? However, a few sources say they can affect your teeth. I'm not sure, but if your wisdom teeth really are shifting your other teeth, maybe that's a good enough reason to have them removed.
I would say, yes, overall, it's worth it to have the wisdom teeth taken out, because they typically cause problems later in life, and you heal much better when you're younger. If the CT scan shows it's not safe, though, then there are other options, such as a coronectomy. Your oral surgeon may be able to help you figure out why your teeth are pushed forward, too. Side note: you may need a referral from a dentist to see an oral surgeon. Good luck!
Here's a video showing the CT scan and a surgeon who seems like he's really good at identifying if it's safe to do the surgery or not: th-cam.com/video/Z_xz321XUpI/w-d-xo.html

I'm now on day 32. On day 27, I got an infection in one of my bottom sockets. Doc said the infection could be in the salivary gland, but it's unknown exactly. I'm currently on antibiotics.
Before the infection, my jaw was mostly healed. Most of the stiffness was gone. The popping seems to have disappeared altogether now. However, the infection caused major swelling, which caused a lot of stiffness again. I've been on antibiotics for 5 days now, and the stiffness is resolving again. I only have a little pain in my jaw when open wide.
My tongue is still a bit numb, but I think it's getting better. I don't notice it as much, and it doesn't bother me as much.
I can eat most foods now, but it hurts to eat anything that is very chewy or hard.

@@hmng2178 it went really well. I would read into it and recommend it if you're tooths roots are married well to your nerve. What happens in about half of patients who get coronectomy done is the bottom half/root of the tooth after 1-2 years grows away from the nerve and toward the surface where it's safer, and then the rest of the tooth (the roots) is removed later on during that time. They can do what is called a coronectomy... It means they take the crown and leave the root, if the root is too close to the nerve. Its a very common procedure for impacted wisdom teeth. I had it done in Mexico..It takes a little longer to heal, But you avoid risking the nerve damage that can happen with a surgical extraction.

I have my tooth close in my nerve but not too close. The dentist had a hard time taking it out even though the tooth is already loose but he cannot pull it because the roots are hard. I was bleeding a lot throughout an hour of surgery that they decided to just remove the crown and leave the root since he's also afraid that he would end up pushing the tooth below. He sectioned my teeth a couple of times and I am worried if they leave it cracked. I can still see my teeth 'til now.

That side of my tongue is always dry j have to brush my teeth a lot. I can’t feel if I stab it or bite hard it doesn’t hurt so sadly I do have nerve damage but I’m more thankful I can still move my tongue and didn’t have any face nerve damage. Please make sure you get a in depth x ray so they can locate nerves to go around my doctor who did my surgery did not then I went ti another dentist as I was going through horrible pain they did and seen that he had went right through my nerve.

If not, I would suggest going to a neurologist or a new oral surgeon to see if they can help you. I'm on day 11 of wisdom teeth removal, and my tongue is numb on the right side, but it's more on the top and tip, not the back of the tongue. My doctor did do a CT scan, but I guess he thought my nerve was fine where it was. I've heard a lot of people say to take a b-complex with all the b vitamins. B vitamins help heal nerves. There is also a couple types of nerve surgery repair that can be done, but I'm not sure how successful they are. I go back to my oral surgeon in a couple days for my 2-week check up. If he says anything important, I'll let you know.

Over exaggeration. I had the same issue and trust me, if the surgeon feels like it will cause nerves damage, they will only take out the upper of the teeth and leaves the root behind.
You will feels numb and the tingling sensation. You will feel pain for the first 6 - 12 hours so take your pain killers. The next day, you will be fine but you still can't do suction or eat food that requires heavy chewing. Then three days later, swelling come down and you will be back to normal.

@@iTzShakenJoE I'm so sorry. I hear b vitamins help with nerve repair, so maybe you could try that to get it back to 100%. My tongue is a little better today, and I've been taking b vitamins, but it could just be a coincidence. I take 500 mg B12 daily, and then I have a b-complex I take, as well. I'm not sure how to fix TMJ, but I know if you sleep on your side, your jaw can kind of hang, and that puts excess pressure on the joint.
Thank you for the words of encouragement. I think I did need the surgery, at least for my bottom right tooth, which is the one that probably caused the nerve damage with the numbness being on the right side of my tongue. That wisdom tooth has been infected 2 times in 2 years, and also twice before that. I'm hopeful it will heal, but they say the nerve damage can be permanent is about 0.5% of people.
