It was more straightforward back in the day without social media. If you got rejected, that's the end of the story. Nowadays, if the girl was really mean, she could brag and post about it on her social media and really make you the laughingstock for everyone to pick on. Moral of the story, courtship was more refined and dragged out before the days of the internet, when landline phones were the closest thing you have to a two-way communication back then.

The purpose of your existence is to be joyful, peaceful, and fulfilled bringing glory to God your creator!
      Jesus Christ says:
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest." -Matthew 11:28

Hey guys, if youre really planning to improve your social skills, then hating it is going to bring you nowhere
I used to be this way. I used to HATE going up to people.
But let me tell you, im reaping the rewards now. Im going in on social situations comfortably now and talking to whoever i want
      This is my advice:
Youve got to love it. Learn to love it.
I know its hard, but you HAVE to change the doom and gloom mindset.
How are you going to get what you want if all you expect is disaster and discord?
Replace negative thinking with positive thinking. Trust your gut. Move when it tells you to
From here on out, its down to you guys if you wish to improve or not.

You know what though? He’s right: there’s a good message for younger people that it’s better to take a chance than to live a life of regret. But nobody ever gives any advice to older people, so let me take a shot. I’m 47 (younger than you but not young) and I’m successful with a wonderful wife and daughter. And I have lots of those regrets from my youth. A gorgeous girl I worked with in college who every guy wanted. She never paid attention to any of them. On her last day, before she moved across the country, she told me she’d spent all of this time waiting for me to ask her out. The failures and regrets are part of what made you who you are. Anything you’ve accomplished or that makes you happy now, might not have happened if it weren’t for the things that happened before. So for old guys with regrets, life is short and full of mistakes. Give yourself a break and let it go.

I'm 22 years old, and my love story began in 9th grade when I fell for a girl who was a year younger than me. Back then, I was a shy old bastard, hesitant to make a move. Over the course of three years, she and her friends knew about my feelings for her, yet my own fear and shyness kept me from expressing them directly. But as my 12th grade was nearing to an end, I realized that if I continued like this, I'd lose her forever. Summoning all my courage, I finally approached her. Since then, in 2024, we're still happily together. So, to all those held back by fear, take it from me: face your fears and embrace the opportunity for love

Regret is an illusion, you're creating fantasies in your mind of what could've happened and about what happened in that moment. And in the moment you didn't make any moves because you were too busy fantasizing in your mind about what could go wrong. So the lesson is.. stop thinking about the past and the future and live in the moment. One moment from the next thoughts arise and pass and so do emotions. Don't let that shit define who you are.

This hit me hard because I had some girls flirt with my in high school but my self esteem was so low due to emotional harassment from my “friends” that I didn’t think I was good enough for them and I was convinced they only saw me as a friend. Even when girls alluded to wanting to hang out, I still felt completely inferior. The idea of a girl liking me was not fathomable until I left high school and dropped my crappy “friends”. I even had a particular girl that I knew 1000% she was into me but I still was too scared to ask her out or anything. I think a scary amount of people can relate.
But on the bright side of things, those experiences taught me that I can’t go through life being scared of petty stuff and I needed to develop a stronger mental frame.

I think the biggest thing that has surprised me in this life is that getting older doesn’t solve anything. I am 24 now and still have the same fears and insecurities that I did when I was 14. Courage does not come at the absence of fear, but in the midst of it rather. We translate our feelings and impulses into something we convince ourselves to be true. Truth is beyond anything that we think/feel. Are you afraid? Then choose courage, even if your feelings don’t match. We have to choose things of value and shape our lives around such things, if you are waiting for the feelings to come you will be waiting until you die having accomplished nothing. I am 24 and not yet old to most, but the irony is If we have the same fears and anxiety all of our life then what difference does age make? It’s the choices we make and the lessons we gain from them.

He basically told me it’s the guys job to ask me out, not the other way around. Then looked me up and down and said “so.. what’s wrong with you?” He then told his friends and they all laughed at me for the rest of the school year so yeah.. good times lol. My social anxiety shot up from there and I patiently waited to be asked out ever since. (Ps. It never happened and I got too comfy being single so my fate is sealed 😅)

He wanted to boost his ego by putting you down. That's all there is to it. There's nothing wrong with asking a guy out first, I do it all the time. The issue is, you should ask guys out when they show some type of interest first, like engaging in conversation and overall looking like they enjoy talking to you. Both girls and boys are put aback from being asked out completely randomly. Typically, you notice them, they notice you, you notice them noticing you, then you can make a move. Walking up to someone with no prior banter or connection is a sure fire way to get rejected.

I remember having a crush on a girl that I lived near at 16 and I think the feeling was mutual but was too afraid to let her know, I figured I was young and eventually I would break out of my shell and let her know. We both had summer school together and she was killed in an auto accident during a break in between classes. The guilt that I have for feeling like I could've stopped her from getting in that car as well as not just letting her know and getting past my fear of rejection still haunts me and it has been 23 years now.
If you have the chance to do something do it, there are very few things that I have mustered up the courage to do that I look back on it and go "man, that was as bad if not worse than I can imagine" and live with regret for doing it. I always try to tell myself that other people won't remember anything I do, and I will forget it all sooner than later as well. But when I see this, I doubt it. The thing is, though, not having tried is usually much worse than having done the thing ending up awkward/weird/cringy. But it's so much scarier to take that chance.

This is true. I'm in my mid 50's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

Lawson, I'm gonna be real with you. You should feel bad about the action you didn't take that day, and all those times when you potentially could've taken action and possibly changed your life for the better; however, you shouldn't continue to ponder over what could've and would've happened if you had all those times, and instead you should focus on what you can do now. It's a common misconception that once you get past a certain age, who you are and the choices you've made defined you and now you're stuck at where you're at now and there's nothing you can do to change it. That's not true. You still have a long life ahead of you even at 63, and you should take time to realize how fortunate you are to have experienced what you have so that you can learn from it and become a better person to yourself and to others. I'm not sure if that day haunts you because you haven't changed since, or because it's just one of those nights you can't forget, but if you're struggling through life right now and thinking about what could've been when you were younger, don't bother. Focus on the now. There's a light at the end of the tunnel for everybody, you just have to feel your way through the darkness to find it. I wish you the best and I hope you choose to continue enjoying the beautiful life you've been gifted.

I realize now that I wasn’t shy because of other people, it was myself. If I put myself out there into the flow of life at the school I went to, I would’ve been fine and found friends to jam out with on guitar, maybe even a girlfriend. But I felt the classmates I was with wasn’t for me, and the horrible school I came from shaped me that way.

Also that "you know guys are supposed to make the first move 😒"
Was so infuriating. I'm tired of that. It's always the guys that have to hide their feelings but be the ones to always communicate. Meanwhile girls have to be emotional and not communicate. What a load of horseshoe. Where is the balance? Why can't we both communicate and express ourselves? what's so wrong about a girl making the first move or being honest? Both guys and girls need to experience rejection otherwise you have girls like her throwing a tantrum and later become an adult and wife with the same attitude where they don't even ask but expect. That's a horrible relationship and poor kids if any.

Mr. Wallace, Many of us have made mistakes in our lives that we lived to regret. But, at some point we have to let our regrets go for our own peace of mind. You deserve that peace of mind for yourself in order for you to be able to go forward and to be happy. Mistakes we make in life can be hurtful to us but, you deserve to be absolved of your mistake so many years ago.
