Dude I love you and your vibe… Please keep doing reviews like this, subscribed because of how chill and unpretentious you are. Please don’t let the critical spirit of the audio industry infect your pure heart.
This is a great setup! Love that you use a trackpad and a Ball with different hands, I do that too. Looking forward to trying the UC1. Theres alot to be said for keeping the same plugins on every channel, it all comes together better in the mixdown. Thanks for this video!
Hey everyone, amazing response to this video, thanks for all the kind words! A few things I’d like to address that aren’t included in the video: - ‘Alone’ by dan.A is out now on all streaming platforms, please check it out if you liked the track. Here’s a Spotify link: open.spotify.com/album/0WtmFpMforIj0xDaiMp6pV?si=2DN4UyMqSB2zHc9ybVzBEQ - No, this was not a sponsored video! SSL did not pay me to make this! - UC1 is £599 / $850 and includes licenses for both Channel Strip 2 and Bus Compressor 2. - Channel Strip 2 is an emulation of the XL 9000 K console - famed for its extreme clean sound. The E mode button does not turn it into a 4KE series console, just changes the EQ curves slightly to resemble the E series. - Yes, you can solo and cut tracks using Channel Strip 2. I didn’t really touch on it as it’s not a feature I’ve used all that much if I’m being honest. - SSL are committed to this product and the 360 control environment. Updates will come, with further consoles and flavours being added. This could be new plug-ins developed by SSL or some of their third party partners making their SSL licensed plugins 360 compatible. - As well as other consoles, we should expect to see new features added to 360. Click track to make UC1 follow is heavily requested, so I would imagine SSL will take note. - 360 was build with the future in mind, so if there are features you want to see added or particular new consoles implemented, your best bet is to tell SSL / UAD / Plugin Alliance / Waves etc. No point moaning about it in comments sections on TH-cam and forums, tell the companies you are interested as the system this is all built on has been made with that sort of potential in mind.
why cant they just build a 32 channel usb are thunderbolt mixer channel fader like the c24 but without the mic pres and have bigger meter led and the channel count on the screen but hey they dont listen..
@@DRUMVILLE ok yea that would be life changing a c24.but.without the mic pres and connection usb are thundernolt and beter meters and led and big faders 32 like a real mixing board that would be awsome
Solid State Logic SSL Native Essentials Plug-in Collection is $479, so for an extra $370 you get the UC1 to go with it. I don’t think it’s a bad deal at all.
Okay, I like this video but I would also be interested in a video where you expound on how you have your Elgato Stream Deck integrated and perhaps showcasing the Stream Deck with Logic, the UF-8 and UC1 for a more well rounded inclusive video.
@@mikaelsehlin awesome, I hope you enjoy! it’s been several years since UC1 was launched, and there have been various updates that improve the features I discuss in this video
As in computer monitor? Samsung 32 inch curve. It’s the 1080 version in this video, I have since upgraded have 2 of the 32 inch 4K curves now. The stand is an Amazon basics monitor arm for the bottom one, and the top one I’m not a sure, sorry! If you meant monitor speakers, they are Eve Audio SC307 on isoacoustics stands.
Can you for instance select a track on the UF8 and it would automatically being focus on the UC1 too? So we wouldn’t have to use the wheel knob to scroll through all the tracks?
@@DRUMVILLE no doubt, I would just like this feature; and since they control both UF8 and UC1 in 360 app, I think that’s something they can easily integrate in a future update. So it’s doable and would make sense. But as you say, as it is now is already great. I’m generally not super fan of controller because they very often lack of integration with software to feel seamless and smooth, but the SSL solution here looks awesome. It does make me rethink my future studio layout. I was thinking about Raven MTI2, but I was searching to have some real faders and knobs for the mixing part, so I think the SSL solution will take over. Now all we need is a Master section with Transport, maybe some Cues for Headphone, some Speaker selection, maybe even a talkback, and we could build an entire “console” layout with controllers for great integration with DAW… exactly what I’m looking for. My 2¢
13:20 not being able to just click on the channel inside my daw (ableton) and having it select automatically on my ssl uc1 is killing me. thats a big workflow killer for me
great video!! thank you! just a question, when you click on a track in your DAW, is UC1 automatically jumping to that selected track? i use an Avid Artist Mix for Faderwork and really like that way of navigating with the mouse to the channel that i need, instead of using a wheel on the controller itself
UC1 is great idea, I have been awaiting for such a controller that will operate SSL channel strip and bus comp. The next step is to make it truly analog so that we have a real SSL analog 32 channel mix system. It could be done by recording sound thru a channel EQ and Comp and printing it into its own SSD disk. So whenever you grab a channel, it starts to record sound thru that analog channel from that point on and it blends with former recorded material on that same channel.
@@lawrencebiancardi9363 well we have lots of digitally controlled analogue pieces coming through these days, so maybe in the future we will see SSL explore something along these lines
This is an updated guide to installing the SSL equipment with Reaper. Setup Guide I have set up a separate mixing/mastering station in my studio using SSL equipment. I purchased a UC1, UF8, UF1, SSL12, Fusion, Bus+ and Big Six. I have been using Reaper for about ten years but am not a power user. My goal was to get all of the SSL pieces working together with Reaper. Unfortunately SSL does not fully support Reaper in setting up the UC1, UF1 and UF8. So I had to wade in (over my head) into getting Reaper and all of the SSL equipment to play nice together SSL's technical support was responsive but they did not have knowledge of Reaper. I could not find any TH-cam videos or other information on how to configure all the this equipment together. So I decided I would offer a few comments on what eventually worked for me. The SSL User Manuals are very good in explaining the functions of the equipment. The Fusion and Bus+ and SSL12 provide no particular connection or configuration issues. They are easy to set up and operate. The SSL User manuals and TH-cam videos for the Big Six, UC1 and UF8 explain how to physically connect each piece to a computer (in my case a Windows 11PC). They also do a good job of explaining how to download the software - 360 plug in mixer, Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Bus Compressor 2. The biggest difficulties I encountered in this were due to my total inexperience with using iLok software manager. But the process eventually worked fine. So I suggest that one follow the SSL videos and User Guides. Just one comment. The Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Compressor 2 are VST's and it is best to allow the SSL downloader to put these in the default folder - which is the Steinberg VST Plugins folder. Pay attention to Reaper's warning that VST plugins should not be placed in the Reaper plugin/FX folder along with the standard Reaper plugins. It is important to recognize SSL's caution to not mix VST's and VST3 versions of the SSL plugins. The VST downloader will download VST and VST3 versions of the plugins. I just load the VST versions of the SSL plugins in my tracks in Reaper. With regard to the USB connections, I offer the following advice. Use either the USB cables that SSL provides or very high quality cables. Do no use any USB cables longer than 1 ½ meters. Do not use a hub for any connection. Connect the UC1 USB cable from the UC1 to the UF8 “thru” USB input (which is a USB type A input). I run a USB cable from the UF8 USB output (which is a USB type C connector) to my UF1. I then run a USB cable from my UF1 to my PC computer. I connect the Big Six USB output or the SSL12 output to a separate USB connection on my computer. There are essentially two aspects of connecting the SSL equipment to Reaper 1) Midi / MCU connections and 2) audio connections. After all the SSL software is installed, go to Reaper's Options > Preferences > Audio > Midi Devices. A table will pop up. There will be a table listing twelve SSL V MIDI Ports for Input and under that there is a table listing twelve SSL V MIDI Ports for Output. Under the Mode column of each table I enable all twelve ports. Do this by right clicking each port under Mode column. A window will pop up. Click enable. Do this for all input and output ports. Twelve MIDI inputs / ports and twelve MIDI outputs / ports are therefore enabled. It is not necessary to enable all twelve outputs and inputs but that is what I did and it works for me. Technically it is sufficient to only enable the first port for input and first port for output. (If you are daisy chaining more than one UF8, you do have to enable more than port 1 but I have not done that since I only have one UF8). Right click again on the SSL V-MIDI Port 1 line in the input table. The small window will again pop up. Click on “Enable input for control messages.” You do not have to do this (and cannot do it) for the SSL V-MIDI Port 1 line in the output table. Go to Options > Preferences > Control/OSC/web. Under the blank window, click Add. Another blank window will pop up. There will be a line titled “Control surface mode.” Click on the small down arrow to open up another window with a list of options. Select Mackie Control Universal (MCU). (If you are using more than one UF8, I think you also need to select Mackie Control Extender, but since I only have one UF8 I do not know for sure). Click OK at the bottom of the window. MCU is a protocol that allows the SSL equipment to communicate with and control the various Reaper functions. In Reaper, go to Options > Preferences > Audio Device and set up the parameters for you audio interface. This is no different that how you set up your audio interface normally. (You probably have already done this). I suggest at this point that you restart your computer. Then turn off everything - the computer, the Big Six, UF8, UC1, UF1, SSL12, Bus+ and Fusion. Then I do the following: The order is important. Turn on the UF8 and UC1. Turn on your computer. Start Reaper. Open the SSL 360. Check that the Options setting described above are sill there. Open a new track and ensure that you can find and open the Bus Compressor 2, Channel Strip 2 and Channel Strip 4k b. Turn on the Big Six if you are using it as your audio interface, or the SSL12 or other audio interface that you are using. Ensure that the USB connection light in the upper right of the Big Six is on. (I have found that if one turns on the audio interface before turning on Reaper, the UC8, UC1 and UF1 will not be happy and will pout. It will essentially refuse to talk with you or do much of anything at all except sit there with a blank stare on its face). In the SSL 360 software, choose Logic Pro for Layer 1. There is no option to choose Reaper. Reaper is not fully supported in this manner - er, not supported at all. (I have seen that someone chose to use Studio One instead of Logic Pro, and this might work. However, SSL technical support recommends using Logic Pro). Most of the soft keys of the UF1 and UF8 are already programmed with commands that correspond to Logic Pro commands. Some of these work with Reaper and some do not. I chose to reprogram all of the UF1 and UF8 soft keys. It is very easy to do. Moreover, I did not really like most of the commands that were per-programmed anyway. The SSL 360 video and the SSL User Guide for the 360 are very good at showing how to program the soft keys. I found it actually fun. So, for me everything is happy working together. I find it remarkable that the 360 mixer, UC1, UF8, UF1, SSL12, Big Six, Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Bus Compressor 2 plugins all correspond to each. When a control is moved in one, it immediately shows in all the others. Pretty cool I think. I also like that the transport controls in SSL 360 work. I duplicate these controls in the first group of soft keys on the UF8. However, this is unnecessary since the dedicated transport controls of the UF1 are excellent work flawlessly (for me anyway). I have also programmed the soft keys to do such things as save, open new project, metronome, undo and redo, snap and unsnap, etc. I like using these instead of resorting to my mouse. But everyone will have a different approach to all of this. Note that the third party plugin controls on the UF8 do not work with Reaper but SSL has been very clear about this, and to me it is not a big deal.
@@matthewturner8615 yes that’s correct. I had 2 buttons to load SSL Channel Strip 2 and Bus Compressor 2 on the selected track. I have many more of these for frequently used plugins from Plugin Alliance, Fab Filter, Arturia, Pulsar etc.. whatever you want really! It’s a macro made in Keyboard Maestro that uses PlugSearch to load the selected plugin, and is then triggered on StreamDeck.
Thats amazing! I shall do the same!! I think the best thing I've done on mine for LPX is midi map different monitor emulations in Sonarworks Reference SoundID so I dont have to keep opening the plugin to change things. Thanks for the tip!!
@@matthewturner8615 ah that’s cool, I couldn’t get SoundID to reliably work. I have MIDI preset recall over several guitar pedals on mine which is fun!
So, did I see correctly? It does not follow when you select a track in Logic? You still need to dial in the channel again on the controller? This is exactly what pisses me off with Console 1!
That is correct yes. Currently to select a plug-in you can either use the channel select knob, open a plug-in, or use 360s to plug-in mixer to get an overview of all instances of plugins and select them from there. Unlike Console One, UC1 has a screen that displays the tracks, and an LED track number too so it is very easy to identify what’s what. Track select is probably going to be something added with an update. SSL worked directly with Apple on UC1 and 360 Logic integration, so there’s potential for this feature to be added too.
It controls SSL’s Channel Strip 2, 4K B and Bus Compressor 2 plug-in. More channel strips are to be added in the future, and I suppose we could maybe see variations on the Bus Compressor too. If you’re asking if it will control X plug-in from X other company, then no.
Good grief my credit card is shaking…! This looks absolutely sweet. Quick note on performance - with the Channel Strip V2 on every channel? Performance impact? Latency?
Very CPU friendly in my experience. In the video I have nearly 100 plugins open, but I’ve done a couple of mixes now with over 100 running on UC1 and everything works great.
heya man, since youre using logic maybe you can help me. Im wanting to buy the UC. I have two 8 channel behringer x-touch extenders (without the main unit x touch). wondering if the UC1 will follow the fader touches from the behringer. obviously logic tracks follow and vice versa. But if I touch activate a track from a fader, will the UC1 pick up that track? thanks man, I cant find the answer anywhere. LOVE the studio btw.. friggin rocks. you are 100 percent analog addict. jeesh ha ha
Hey Teddy! Currently no, unfortunately there is no track select and follow function to the UC1 with the UF8 - would be the same for any MCU controller. I know that this has been a big requested feature, and I know that SSL know that too! Personally I would love to see it implemented. I find it pretty easy to select the track on UC1 itself, but having it automatically follow your selected track either in Loigc or via a controller would take away that need to even think about it. I work closely with SSL and their design team and whilst I obviously won't say anything specific, what I can say is that the SSL 360 software can do some really clever things, so I am hoping they will implement a track follow in the future!
@@DRUMVILLE hey man thanks for the reply. so this is strange. It seems like the number one priority. after my comment I did read about some people putting an instance on track 1 and turning on the plugin "link" button, but thats kind of a workaround I guess. im really bummed out because this is a first priority for me. I know I can cycle through tracks on the Uc1 but. anyway, side note. I found a used UC1 on a (big brand online music store) and I spoke with SSL and they said "the units plugins are redeemed, you'll have to buy them separately".. ouch, I hope people dont get suckered with these used units.
@@flipnap2112 yep Link plugin mode is a way of working around the limitation. There is another way you can do it too though: Let's say you have a mix going and you've put Channel Strip 2 on every track and buss in the mix. On UC1, you can then hit the 360 button, which will launch the SSL 360 app in the Plugin Mixer view. You can now see every single instance of Channel Strip 2 arranged like a big console in front of you - selecting a track then mirrors it onto UC1 allowing you to take control of it's settings. Obviously the downside to this is that you have to launch 360 and it takes you out of Logic :( BUT, there is a next level to this. If you also have a UF8 (I know, more money) it actually let's you set multiple profiles for different apps via the 3 layer buttons. On Layer 1 I have Logic - so when selected UF8 acts as a regular DAW controller for my channels in Logic. However Layer 2 I have set to SSL 360, so switching to layer two then puts the Plugin Mixer from 360 directly onto UF8 and I can select a track on UF8 and it then mirrors to UC1. It's pretty cool, but I suppose you could argue it's the same sort of thing as selecting the track / plugin via UC1. Being able to select a track in DAW with mouse and have UC1 follow is still be something I would like to see added. I know SSL are working on stuff, so let's all hope it's coming! Wow that's really bad of the retailer! I hope you told SSL who it was, because they should not be selling them without the plugin licenses!
@@DRUMVILLE thanks for the reply! and yeah I told them about it. they didnt know nor did they seem to care. pitiful some customer service these days. thanks again and have an awesome weekend
Great review! It feels like having to scroll through channels on the UC1 in a large project when bouncing between multiple tracks could break the flow. Being able to select the track through the 360 interface is cool, but it'd be nice if they could also sync the UC1 track when selecting different tracks in the DAW ( or selecting the plugin instance ). The main competitor being Softube Console 1, their implementation of having the 20 track select buttons feels a bit quicker. Personally I'd prefer that to constant rotary knob access. Would be great to use it as a controller for the Brainworx plugins as those have a very different sound from the SSL Native Channel. That being said the UC1 looks great, and the SSL Native Channel and Bus Compressor plugins are top notch. Do the knobs feel as good as they look?
Hey Nick, thanks, glad you like the video! For me, I always found Console One a bit cumbersome to use. I never fully know what I'm looking at with it because of the layout and aesthetics. UC1 looks like a channel strip, so my brain immediately makes that connection and knows where to go to do what I want. I feel like the channel selection method will come down purely to personal preference. It's true you can jump directly between two tracks on Console One - if you know what number track those are. If you don't, I suppose you are stuck having to look at your screen and perhaps digging out GUIs. With UC1, all that information is instantly there and accesable and readable. If you do want to jump directly between two channels, scrolling is fast and easy - I think it would be less of an issue than you might think it is - but this is where the SSL 360 app could come into play to make life a little easier. You could get everysingle instance of of your Channel Strip 2 plug-ins on screen in the Plug-In Mixer view, select the track you want with your mouse, make changes on UC1, click another track in 360 etc. Honestly, I have had so much fun using it. I really like using hardware in my mixes, and the way you interact with UC1 really gives me that same feeling. In terms of the knobs - they feel great. Parameter controls are super smooth but have a nice subtle bit of resistance, and the channel / buss compressor select knobs are stepped so really easy to feel / count how many instances of a plug-in you are moving over by!
@@DRUMVILLE Awesome thanks for the reply! Towards the end of the video it did seem like you were flying between tracks with the rotary knob so I imagine it's something you get good at. Nice to hear it feels great as well!
Love it. Just wish it wasn't so gosh darn expensive. I'd love to have the set up you have there, plus the analog SSL Fusion for my mixbus. It's funny how everything SSL makes is so expensive, yet their SSL 2+ audio interface is at an entry-level price. I wonder if the interface was purely made to sell beginners on their brand? I have the interface and it sounds and feels great. The converters are fantastic and the 4k button adds some great flavor. My only problem with the thing is that it doesn't have adat for input expansion. So if I ever decide to record a live drumkit or full band, I'll have to use a different interface.
The plug-ins alone cost $329 each, so to get the controller and both plug-ins and come in under that is pretty good I think. Whatever way you look at it though £600 is a fair bit of change to drop on anything. I think it's worth it though - I'm still using UC1 and loving it
Hi, nice review! I have a question, how is the interaction with uf8? I have it and this new shit is like a caramel! Does the selection button of the uf8 affects to the uc1? I mean if I select in the uf8 automatically switch in the uc1? Same with faders and knobs? Ty so much bro!
The interaction with UF8 is currently non-existant! Don't worry though, without breaking any NDAs I think I can probably say that SSL have plans for further integration of this control environment!
No! You kind of just leave the units alone to be honest. You get different sounds from the 361 from feeding it different levels of signal. The more you attenuate what goes into the 361s, the brighter the output becomes
Hey everyone, glad you are enjoying the video! Thanks for all the questions, I will continue to answer stuff on here when I've got a second, but I'll also be answering some questions later this evening over on my Instagram - submit them on my profiles story! @bennidumville
Pease does plugin mixer works without the UC1? I mean I own a Raven and don’t need another extra dedicated controller. Can I buy the software only and use the plugin mixer interface without the UC1? Thx
@@Vossflying yes! If you currently own Channel Strip 1 and Bus Comp 2, it’s a free upgrade to V2 and you can use the 360 app to access the Plug-In Mixer for free too. If you don’t already own the V1 plug-ins, you can buy them and will also be able to use the Plug-In Mixer for free!
In fact I din't find any information about the 360° application. I don't know if you can just buy the 360 ° without the UC1. I don't have any SSL products
I can't wait to get my greasy hands on that UC1! Thanks for the walkthrough, love the way it seems to work. I mean the plugins are great so being able to have knobs & buttons is just perfect. Grew up on SSL desks so this is going to make me happy, whenever I can finally afford it! haha! From astonishingly grey, wet & still relatively locked down Kinsale! ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️
My background doesn’t involve all that much console use, have used a few here and there, but I have always used lots of hardware in both tracking and mixing and for me UC1 really does give you that same feeling. I think you’d like it! Take care and stay safe Sonny!
Thanks for explaining the Keyboard Maestro trick to load plugins in a previous comment. Completely of topic... whats the model of the slick white Samsung Display your are using ? Cheers !
Haha unexpected question, but it’s a Samsung 32" CF39 Curved Monitor. Few years old now not sure they still make it as they’re probably all 4K ones now
I actually didn't know, which is why it wasn't in the video! Now that the product has launced and stores have stock, it looks to be £598. The price includes licenses to Channel Strip 2 and Bus Compressor 2.
Great video cant wait to get this when its available in my country. is there not a way that it can follow the selected channel in logic? that seems like it would be a smoother integration? in logic preferences under control surfaces there is an option for control surface to follow track selection. does that not work?
UC1 doesn't work as a standard control surface - it is completely powered by the 360 software and as such doesn't appear as a control surface to Logic. The plug-ins have been completely redesigned to work with the new software However this does mean that UC1 isn't throttled by the limitations of MCU/HUI. 360 is a very deep software and SSL are able to do some really cool things with it, so I wouldn't be surprised if they could work out a way to follow selected channels. They also worked directly with Apple / Logic to get the track following system implemented, so the relationship is there to futher improve Logic integration.
@@DRUMVILLE yeah cool i get it. amazing piece of gear i cant wait to get one in my hands. i use a 24 fader controller that has touch sensitive faders so using the link chain on logic plug ins and having them in the same slot you might be able to get it to follow channels that way?
@@DRUMVILLE If opening the plugin focuses the track on the hardware, then I see two ways to make it "work". Alternative 1. Put the SSL-channelstrip as the first instance on every track. Go to Key commands in Logic and assign the shortcut labeled as "Open/Close Audio Insert 1 Plug-in window of focused Track" to a key on your keyboard (or hardware/midi controller). Select a track in Logic (eg with the mouse) and press the shortcut! Alternative 2. Do the same thing as above (1), BUT instead of opening up a track by the key command, activate the "link button" in Logic on every channelstrip, so that when you select a track in Logic the window updates to show the plug-in of the selected track. Then you can also select the option "Controls" instead of "Editor" in Logics plug-in window on every channelstrip + minimize the plug-in window + move that small plug-in window out of the way (put it in a corner on the screen). Could you try my suggestions Drumville?
@@bahmanghanbari7012 That would work, but for me and a lot of people that's just a workaround. What I like about UC1 is the immediacy and ease of use and not really having to think about it, so the ideal solution really is an update where selecting the channel makes UC1 focus on the plugin on that track. I'm pretty confident SSL will address this soon.
Hey Benni just a question on something i noticed in your vid not really related to the controller. your stream deck implementation.. Is that sound flow running a script with plugsearch with your short cut buttons to add plug ins with the stream deck? or using companion or some other app with stream deck? cheers mate
@@DRUMVILLE very cool! Shall be finding my stream deck tomorrow haven't used it for a bit. thats slick how you have it working with plugsearch which i have already. Oh yeah i ordered a UC1 today should be picking it up tomorrow! SSL really nailed the rollout launch of this. stock in store on launch day in Australia is impressive. cheers mate
@@DRUMVILLE Hey Benni i just got it all set up! If you click the chain link at the top right corner of the plug in uc1 follows the selected track. it works perfectly. so on my x touch fader bank i have touch sensitive faders turned on so i touch a fader it selects that channel. Leave the channel strip plug in open with the chain link on in logic and UC1 follows it. works perfect its way better than chasing channels with the rotary encoder. rock on!! 🤘
! Quick question when clicking on the E button does it turn the whole channel strip into the 4000E version or part of the eq knobs? sorry for the dumb question
Yes like Joseph says it just changes the EQ curves, it’s not a full blown E series emulation. That is something we can look forward to in the future I would think
Loved your presentation, this looks like something that would fit my needs perfectly. At 9:40 you used a shortcut to open the plugin right? How did you set this up?
It’s not a shortcut per se, it’s a macro - a list of specific commands to achieve a designated outcome. It’s a combination of Stream Deck, Keyboard Maestro and PlugSearch.
@@DRUMVILLE Yeah I assumed something like that, I've seen that it is a Stream Deck and Plugsearch. I'll play around and try to set up something like that. Thanks
@@joost3783 thanks yeah I might do. I don’t really want to become a TH-camr, but I might occasionally do videos on stuff I think is cool / fairly unique and I think StreamDeck Logic integration would fit that bill as there is almost no information out there about!
Hey man, solid review. Can you tell me honestly what the CPU hit is with say 50+ instances in a session? I can see in your screen that your CPU meter in Logic is peaking hard. However I know you’re also running screen recording software and... sometimes Logic shows a max load but then when you open the window it’s only one core doing the work. I’m a composer and use a lot of VI instances. This looks boss but am concerned about CPU usage. Cheers
The CPU peak is coming a lot from all of the other plugins in the session. Honestly I would say Channel Strip 2 is fairly low CPU usage I think.I’ve run other sessions just using the SSL plugs and have had over 100 of them running
"for some reason" No surprise to me. I'd prefer a solid, versatile sound and workflow, over a range of different flavors that I have to control with my mouse.. That is, when it comes to spending $2000 on one or the other.
Good video! Just a note on the "emulation" side of things;. The SSL Native plugins aren't really emulations in the same way the brainworx / Waves etc ones are. As far as I can tell, the coding is taken from the Duende setup, which is itself ported directly from the C200 series of consoles, which were digital broadcast units. Sure, the C200 were *based* on the XL 9000 Ks in terms of EQ design etc, but this is very different to bx's approach of modelling components and tolerance etc for different types of desk. Unfortunately this means we probably won't get Native versions of things like 4000s without either significant R&D by SSL or at least licencing the code back from people like bx...? A pity, because being able to switch between console types would make this a no-brainer purchase for me. Fingers crossed this will work with bx plugins in future updates...
SSL have said they will be adding further strips to UC1. I would guess that this is just the beginning of the UC1 / UF8 / 360 Mix environment and we will in the future see new console models made by SSL added to the lineup - 4KE 4KG etc - and that we may even see some of SSLs developer partners - UA, bx / PA - working with SSL to make their plugins 360 compliant.
@@DRUMVILLE That is interesting. I might wait to see what's added to the range before investing, but this is definitely one to watch, thanks for the info.
@@jjwhittle8873 I would expect them to release a “Transport controller” with maybe some Cues features to have headphones selection, talkback… who knows?
I am a visually impaired producer that is also lead with SSL, I currently own the UF8 and the UC one I use Apple‘s voice to navigate and to do all my mix and mastering, I was wondering if there’s any chance that we can link up and perhaps you could show me hands-on through team viewer or a zoom call to see if you can help me navigate I know it sounds pretty discouraging what I’m asking but believe me I have great talent. I’ve been doing this for over 25 years. Hopefully, I can hear back from you. Great video by the way.
@@sin_phany_tv hey dude! I am unfortunately no expert on accessibility features, however I have always thought it was really cool seeing more options added to the technology we use every day, to help make these experiences more inclusive - video games have really been pushing accessibility features in recent years, and I know Apple and the Mac have been implementing more features too. As far as I’m aware - and I could be totally wrong - the music production world in general has been pretty slow to adapt and implement accessibility features. One of the reasons I really enjoy working closely with SSL is that they care about this sort of thing. In my time working with them there has been a push to include people from different backgrounds and people working in different areas and levels of the music industry, into their product and plug-in development, to get more diverse and widespread feedback and create a better product. In August of this year an update was rolled out to include accessibility features for those who are visually impaired to several of their plug-ins and 360. I believe they will update more of the plug-ins to include these features, and develop new ones with these features built in. This update was made in collaboration with Jason Dasent, who is a visually impaired producer himself. I would maybe consider reaching out to Jason and seeing if he would be able to help walk you through some of the features and answer some of your questions about using the UF8 and UC1. I am flattered that you have asked me, but I just think that he would be way more qualified than myself to help you in this instance. Perhaps I could also ask if anyone at SSL would be able to get in touch with you to provide some assistance? If you’d like to reach out to Jason, his Instagram handle is @jasondasentproducer There is more information and some videos with Jason going through the features he helped develop at this website: solidstatelogic.com/accessibility Hope that helps! Benni
@ no it’s cool, I have all their contacts I’m affiliated with them so since I see that you know how to navigate I wasn’t asking if you knew about the accessibility just wanted to get in contact and you’re able to see how I move around my perhaps with my knowledge and your knowledge, I could have learned something, but believe me I wasn’t thinking at all that you knew anything about the accessibility feature and I know about Jason, but thanks for reaching out
@@DRUMVILLE but that’s pretty cool that you know about the world of accessibility with video games and all, not really into it but believe me everything with logic and ProTools is completely accessible and my passion for mixing a mastering is absolutely wonderful I too am in love with hardware and have been LA 610, WA 73, WA1B dangerous music box for summing, Apollo XA, Apollo, twin, universal satellite M3 max and so much more, I love the fact that you have a fusion and since I’m affiliated with SSL other plug-ins are absolutely amazing and glad that I am under Team
It can be tricky yeah! Usually a bit of trial and error to get a macro working, and then try using it on an actual session doing real work, realise it doesn’t work when X thing happens and go back and fix it!
V2 is SO good. My favourite G comp style plug-in now I think. I think I saw on GearSpace some people were comparing to the actual hardware and were very impressed with how close it was.
Are you TJ miller's twin? Lol. Very nice studio and good vid! Been dreaming of this sort of thing for years, I imagine other manufacturers will come out with similar HW controllers.
Not currently, no. The 360 app is very powerful though and I'm pretty sure SSL will be trying to integrate the two products more closely in the future!
@@shaychromoy yep! If you already own Channel Strip 1 or Bus Comp 1, it’s a free upgrade to V2! Otherwise, you can buy the V2 plugins without buying a UC1. They will also give you access to the 360 app and the Plug-In Mixer
Question, have you ever used an SSL real console? Or maybe a Nucleus? If you did, how does the feel of the pots compare? On the UC1 and also the faders on the UF8, love to know. Great video brother, thank you for the info
I don’t have loads of experience using consoles in my past, I have used them here and there, including a G series - but I don’t have hundreds of hours behind one, and it was long enough ago I wouldn’t be able to give you an accurate comparison on how the knobs / faders feel. But, I would say they feel good. UC1 feels as good as any other hardware I have. Faders on UF8 feel fantastic. So so smooth. I had a Mackie MCU Pro before UF8 and the UF8 put those faders to shame.
Cool sh** Can't afford it, don't NEED it. Just trying to figure weather the two plugins (Channel strip 2 and Bus compressor 2) are worth using without the UC1 controller.
Yes they are great plugins - i believe they have a deal on currently where you get both plugins for $49. If UC1 doesn’t interest you but the plugins do, now is the time to check them out!
Hello! Currently, no. At release UC1 gives you control of Native Channel Strip 2, and Native Bus Compressor 2 - both come included with purchase. One of the first questions I asked SSL was whether it would work with other official SSL licensed consoles, and let's just say they are well aware that this is something people would be interested in.
It would probably cost a lot more and require the unit to be a lot bigger to include an audio interface. Why not just pair UC1 with one of their already existing audio interfaces?
@@DRUMVILLE i know it would cost more. I'm just dreaming. It wouldn't have to be that big to be an interface anyways. Regarding your question, why pair it with another equipment if you can have it all in 1? Again, this is just my imagination. An audio interface that works as a controller in this format and size. The SSL interface they have doesn't look like this at all. Cheers.
@@sergio_grez I dunno, I would much rather have two really well designed separate products and respective price points, than one frankenstein's monster amalgamation of useless features - but that's just me! I think target audience of UC1 is clearly people who already have an audio interface - and most of them will be far better interfaces and converters than what would be able to be crammed into a UC1. It certainly wouldn't work for me anyway - would maybe be a bit much to match Anteleope conversion, 32 analogue inputs and 32 analogue outputs, and digital connections. Further more I wouldn't want all of that cluttering up my desk. SSL have previously made the Nucleus which brought together several different features such as control surface, monitor controller with talkback, dante interface and even included mic amps - it cost over £4000 though
@@deantiquisetnovis Drive/saturation, transient control, DAW integration, external plugin control (Softube and UAD), many channel strips, compressors, eqs, smaller unit (portable), grouping, copy/paste settings, panning and sends control. Oh, and it's 2xcheaper than SSL.
@@Oriakc - it's free. Just go to the Downloads Section of the SSL website and grab it. It's not a requirement to have a UC1. You can still use 360° Plug-in Mixer with just the plugs
Hello, yes the software is free to use! So if you already have the plugins you can use it. Also V2 of channel strip and bus comp are free upgrades for v1 users!
Too bad, that the UC1 doesn't automatically update the channel strip when a track in Logic is selected. This keeps me from buying it. It´s an unnecessary extra step slowing me down...it would also be great if the UC1 automatically displays the channel strip of a channel that is being selected via a touch sensitive fader...
From the FAQs on SSL‘s website ist seems like the UC1 and UF8 will not be able to communicate with each other in the future due to different protocols used. 😞 so 360 updates would be the only way to make it happen
@@florianarndt this is taken directly from their FAQ “However, future updates (like the Plug-in Mixer layer for UF8) will add more ways in which the products can work together.“
It is big yeah, but I feel like it’s a good size and comfortable too use, don’t like controllers that are too small. If you haven’t got the desk space though then yeah it’s a difficult thing to fit in
@@DRUMVILLE I have a decent size workstation, 43 inches wide to be specific plus it has a detachable side which gives an extra 20 or something inches, it's just a personal preference but once again it's a beautiful piece of gear and I'm looking forward to purchase it 🙂
Gutted, that the UC1 doesn't follow teh channel selected in Logic....deal breaker for me....I dont want to be hunting my channel number , then scrolling to that number...WHY can it just just to the track selected in Logic arrange window.....gutted, money back in my pocket.
Yeah surprised that’s not working like that too. It doesn’t even need to be DAW specific. TC and Softube have been doing this for a long time with their plug-in controllers. I am sure SSL will fix that soon though.
It’s honestly not been that big of a deal for me. Tracks are arranged on UC1 exactly the same way as they are in your DAW, so if you know where to look and click you can do the same with the channel select knob, it’s very easy. Also, if you open a plug-in UC1 will snap to that instance, and you also have the plug-in mixer which shows you all instances that you can quickly jump around. I agree with you though, I think it would be a really handy feature and would like to see it implemented in the future through a 360 update - not really been a dealbreaker for me though because of how easy UC1 is to use even without that feature.
@@DRUMVILLE depends on your workflow I guess. This is a one-channel- at -a -time controller. If you have a project with 150+ tracks and you have to scroll EVERY time in order to access the tracks you want to control then you’re gonna go nuts pretty soon. Been there done that. But if like you mention, you work mainly with bus processing it’s ok I guess. This should be added as soon as possible in my humble opinion - I am a controller geek and channels not following my DAW selection one of my pet peeves. Thanks so much for the video it’s really well done and helps a lot understand what this controller can (and can’t do ). Subbed :)
@@DomSigalas if you have that many tracks and instances of the plugin, that’s where the 360 app comes in handy as it lets you see every single instance of channel strip 2 and bus comp 2 on your screen at the same time. Scrolling is very easy. The scroll wheel has steps to it so if you want to move one channel over it’s easy, but if you apply more force you quickly scroll through more tracks. You get a feel for it the more you use it and it becomes very quick
This thing looks like a dream. Home studio mini SSL desk. If only it was actually hardware and not just a cool looking totally overpriced software controller.

- No, this was not a sponsored video!

@@DRUMVILLE too bad, it would really make the workflow simpler and faster. At least that’s how I imagine it.
@@Spidouz it’s pretty simple and fast as is to be honest but it’s a feature I’d like to see added in for sure
My 2¢

great video!! thank you! just a question, when you click on a track in your DAW, is UC1 automatically jumping to that selected track? i use an Avid Artist Mix for Faderwork and really like that way of navigating with the mouse to the channel that i need, instead of using a wheel on the controller itself
Currently no, it doesn’t work like that. I think is probably something SSL 360 will be updated to do in the future.
@@DRUMVILLE thank you
Great video work my dude!
what is that cool box that your using to insert plugins?
The Stream Deck? It’s a macro triggering device, very cool, can do all sorts - would recommend checking out!
So whenever you grab a channel, it starts to record sound thru that analog channel from that point on and it blends with former recorded material on that same channel.
yo wait, back up my dude. so you want a 32 channel analogue emulation of digital emulations of analogue hardware, but with built in digital recording?
Eh? So what part of this is actually analogue?
@@lawrencebiancardi9363 well we have lots of digitally controlled analogue pieces coming through these days, so maybe in the future we will see SSL explore something along these lines

This is an updated guide to installing the SSL equipment with Reaper.
Setup Guide
I have set up a separate mixing/mastering station in my studio using SSL equipment.
So I had to wade in (over my head) into getting Reaper and all of the SSL equipment to play nice together
SSL's technical support was responsive but they did not have knowledge of Reaper.
What software are you using with the stream deck to insert the plugins ?
It's called PlugSearch by SpeakerFood. Am using it in combination with Keyboard Maestro
Could you make a video to show how you incorporate your Streamdeck into you LPX workflow?
haha oh my god the things I can do on my StreamDeck would make you cry
I could be wrong but it looked like you had a button set to open a specific plugin presumably on which ever track was selected?
With console one to have control with your logic you have to use VST 3 of console 1 so can control the DAW.
🥴😂😂😂😂
So great review, very interesting. Thank you for explaining.
Thank you!
Will it control other plugins besides the SSL plugins?
It controls SSL’s Channel Strip 2, 4K B and Bus Compressor 2 plug-in. More channel strips are to be added in the future, and I suppose we could maybe see variations on the Bus Compressor too.
If you’re asking if it will control X plug-in from X other company, then no.
Good grief my credit card is shaking…! This looks absolutely sweet. Quick note on performance - with the Channel Strip V2 on every channel? Performance impact? Latency?
I tried out the first version of it in Mixbus which is notoriously volatile with CPU usage, put it on maybe 25-30 channels and it was fine.
You can demo the plugins separately FYI, you don't need to buy the hardware in order to get them...
Very CPU friendly in my experience. In the video I have nearly 100 plugins open, but I’ve done a couple of mixes now with over 100 running on UC1 and everything works great.
Really nice in depth video man
Thank you very much! Glad you like it
heya man, since youre using logic maybe you can help me.
There is another way you can do it too though:
Let's say you have a mix going and you've put Channel Strip 2 on every track and buss in the mix.
Obviously the downside to this is that you have to launch 360 and it takes you out of Logic :(
BUT, there is a next level to this.
Benni - you are a Master!
too kind!
That song is fucking awesome.!!!
Great vid altogether!
@@tomh_ssl7748 thanks Tom! Congrats on release!
Is it possible to use two instances in one chain or only one for every audio chain? That’s my biggest problem with the Softube console 1.
Yea this is possible! They then appear on UC1 in the order they are in the chain
@@DRUMVILLE ty so much!
Hi, the configuration of the buttons on the dolby (modified) 361can change or this are only ? Change the sound with differents button configuration?
No! You kind of just leave the units alone to be honest. You get different sounds from the 361 from feeding it different levels of signal. The more you attenuate what goes into the 361s, the brighter the output becomes
Nice review. Clear and to the point. Thanks a lot!

What will the price be?
I actually didn't know, which is why it wasn't in the video! Now that the product has launced and stores have stock, it looks to be £598. The price includes licenses to Channel Strip 2 and Bus Compressor 2.
Awesome review, very informative. Love hour you can have tactile control over the feel. I wish it was slightly cheaper though
The plug-ins have been completely redesigned to work with the new software
However this does mean that UC1 isn't throttled by the limitations of MCU/HUI.
Does UC1 respond by clicking the track rather than plugin insert? Or do you have to click the plugin insert each time to control it?
Currently you can’t click the track. Opening the plugin will work, or you can select on the unit itself, or use the 360 app.
@@DRUMVILLE
If opening the plugin focuses the track on the hardware, then I see two ways to make it "work".
Is that sound flow running a script with plugsearch with your short cut buttons to add plug ins with the stream deck? or using companion or some other app with stream deck? cheers mate

Leave the channel strip plug in open with the chain link on in logic and UC1 follows it. works perfect its way better than chasing channels with the rotary encoder. rock on!! 🤘

No, they are endless encoders which is what enabled the settings to be recalled from channel to channel
! Quick question when clicking on the E button does it turn the whole channel strip into the 4000E version or part of the eq knobs? sorry for the dumb question
Just the EQ curves

Loved your presentation, this looks like something that would fit my needs perfectly. At 9:40 you used a shortcut to open the plugin right? How did you set this up?
It’s not a shortcut per se, it’s a macro - a list of specific commands to achieve a designated outcome. It’s a combination of Stream Deck, Keyboard Maestro and PlugSearch.
@@DRUMVILLE Yeah I assumed something like that, I've seen that it is a Stream Deck and Plugsearch. I'll play around and try to set up something like that. Thanks

I’m a composer and use a lot of VI instances. This looks boss but am concerned about CPU usage. Cheers

Does this control non native plugins?
I can imagine if this was also an Audio Interface. That would be the complete marvellous package.

Cheers
Is it controlling third party plugins...........??????
No
Not right now. Might be something added in the future if SSLs partners make their products compliant with 360.
Damn i tought it was hardware, that would be cool.
SSL make hardware channel strips and buss compressors if that’s your thing!
@@DRUMVILLE lol this
Time for the battle. Console 1 vs SSL-UC1
Who will win it all?! 😂
What are the bookies saying? 👀
They both serve a purpose to their market
This thing looks like a dream. Home studio mini SSL desk. If only it was actually hardware and not just a cool looking totally overpriced software controller.
I really don’t understand the comments like this? You are aware that there is versions of this that is actual analogue hardware right? Not only that but they have existed for a long, long time.

I didn't know TJ Miller was British.
Thanks... I think?
wellll its just not cricket, since getting into prism convertors i know plugs dont hold a flame to outboard gear its electricity into things just sounds better, but im a lazy miserable shit getting so wow this wound be nice with some flat 2d plugins, or buy a load of linda mccartney plant burgers and be really aware of animal cruelty and revisit some soundgarden records hmmmm, coffee time
That’s fine, don’t get it, get hardware instead. As you can see if you watch the video, I use a combination of both.
