- Thank you for tuning into what it’s like, sorry it’s been a couple days, but today a little late on what it’s like 1952 Crosley farm o road the jeep like Vehicle that could do it all.
A couple corrections that need to be made Crosley didn’t go bankrupt, he What is losing money and decided to stop selling automobiles, The gearshift selector that I said was the PTO is actually the emergency brake. It’s possible to get this up to 50 miles an hour but they do get a little bit Squirrley due to the size of the vehicle.

David Crosby just recently passed away according to Western Journal this past week.
Just beyond this vehicle I noticed a 2 door blue Chevy that appeared to be a 1965 Biscayne. Can you please video it if possible? Thanks
I know a little bit about Crosley. The older models had "COBRA" engines, which stood for "copper brazed". You are correct that they were made from stamped steel, but they were held together with oven-baked copper brazing !! They were made by Taylor Engines in San Francisco. The problem with these engines was electrolysis from the coolant. Over time pin holes would develop from rust and the engine would leak. 1949 is when Crosley changed to the cast iron engine, but the damage had already been done in the publics eyes. These engines would go up to 40 miles on one gallon of fuel.
40mpg when nobody cared about that. Yeah, Crosley was a doomed idea, but isn't it a tidy little car?
In 1962 my brother's first car was a Crosley station wagon. In those days there was a parts supplier on Long Island.
My father told a story from WWII. He and 3 other guys were driving on an elevated road in Algeria. Suddenly, they had incoming. They all jumped out, picked up the "peep" turned it around and got out of there. Crosley built a light weight utility vehicle for the military. That may have been one of them. I wonder how similar it would have been to the Farm-O-Road?

You can buy a Mahindra ROXOR which is marketed as a "side-by-side" but is actually built from original 1947 Jeep stampings under license from Stelantis. I believe they are built here in the US. some dealers can even get them road legal.
They can be made road legal as a utv only per legal agreements between jeep and Mahindra
i have a huge crosley radio stored in my upstairs, it has a short wave band on it along with the regular stations. about 4 ft tall and well over 2 ft wide and pretty deep, never measured the depth. worked when i got it in the 70s from the grandma of a friend, one of the tubes was bad and i actually found one at an old tv radio repair shop in san antonio, now another tube has gone out and i just stopped looking for parts.

If the Jeep had a mini me it would be this Crosley for sure. I find it hilarious that a company known for making radios makes a vehicle that doesn't have one in it. And also that 70 mph speedometer is wishful thinking at best. IDK Maybe they use that speedometer in the other vehicles.

I’m going to hit this video the Crosley farm O road again apparently there was a lot of information that wasn’t spot on a lot of information splitting hairs in this one evidently was a prototype it wasn’t a real car as some people from the club say it’s not 100% real so I plan on heading out again maybe I can find one with some accessories and show how that works that would be really cool but I’m glad you like this episode

Very interesting car. I'll correct you on the wiper motors. They're vacuum, not electric. The engine is particularly interesting. The high location of the fuel pump suggests an overhead camshaft. The cam is not visible in the diagrams, but it looks like there is a vertical shaft at the front of the motor to drive it. Also, peak power at 5400 RPM is really high revving for 1952.

There was an article on Wikipedia saying that in England they made a dual overhead cam version of this engine which is super interesting

High rpm up to 6000 was common in Europe and the UK in the 1950's. Even the Holden Grey Motor here in Australia had a recommended red line of 6000 rpm and was released in 1948. The latter was tested at rpms between 8000 and 10,000.
However, in the USA it was very much different. There was many very large and very long stroke motors that could barely rev above 4000 rpm without destroying themselves.
The COBRA and CIMA engines were the first production overhead cam engines in the USA depending on how you count some dusenberg engines; they're driven by a shaft at the front with a bevel gear assembly.
I just saw one of these today and it was equiped with a heater. It apparently was an option. this one had a dump box and was equipped to ;plow snow.
A few years ago, there was a single bay shop on Park Ave, Edgewater,FL full of Crosley engines and parts AND a restored Hotshot.

Lawn tractor, lightweight tractor designed to mow grass or turf without damaging it. They dont have a lot of power because they dont need a lot of power. Garden tractors are designed for anyone from a small farmer to a homesteader, the main difference being its designed with farm tools like plows or small cultivators for actual tractor work. Lawn tractor=above ground work, Garden tractor=subsurface capable. Granted these days that line has begun to blur slightly, but you can still find dedicated lawn tractors AND dedicated garden tractors as well as ones that are intended to do both (if you are going to own a tiny tractor for your tiny farm, why buy another even smaller one to mow your grass?)

Think about this. Harley 45. Tremec 3.03. That would turn this fun toy into a very interesting, well, kinda more modern version of what they had intended in the first place. Harley V-twin, B-W T5, I would use this all over my land.😊
The early Willy's Jeep had similar farming options. PTO rear farm type hitches etc.

Hi Jay! Thank you for featuring this auto oddity. I think at that time if in the market for a small tractor I would have gone for a Ford 8N or similar. Like you said not much of a jeep or tractor. As to the song. YES, it is spelled Suite Judy Blue Eyes. Actually, a tribute to singer Judy Collins. Keep 'em coming!

A friend of mine growing up used to sing that all the time I wanted a go of it, might do something like that at the end of some shows as extra for the ones who stuck around for the end =)
I wanted to share this comment left on a Facebook group where this video was shared
Tryed most all the equipment most all had major problems. The snow blade got a second place, worked if you could get traction even with chains and added weight. The cycle bar mower came closest to being ok. The front rotery mower dropped what you were mowing right in the radiator! The rear gang grass mower couldn't mow the grass flattened by the FOR tires ahead of it that would be standing up a hour later not mowed. The plow put the open generator a fue inches of the ground in haling the foliage you wer plowing under with the right wheels in the ferrow. The hay rake tryed to pick up the hay after you mashed it in the stubble with the tires. By the time you drove over the plants with the low clearance FOR there wasn't much to use the cultivator for. The post hole digger sent the FOR in to a epileptic fit. There wasn't enough chain traction to make the snowmobile attachment to work. The factory radiator screen and the row marker worked good and sow on.
When I was a kid in New Jersey had a Crosley station wagon, sing Ryan super everything works perfect I wish I had it today

Someone said that it was mostly just for show most of the accessories only worked one time. Front mower would somehow get grass in radiator that’s not good.
There was a Crosley wagon featured in Hot Rod magazine once , the owner installed an Mazda rotary engine in the engine bay . The car ran 14 inch 60s series tires on the back , they looked huge .

The crosley tin side was used in SCCA racing, class Dsr. They were light. I have some articles on hopping up a Crosley in some of my ild magazines.
Allis Chalmers had a small tractor that looked like a small road grader. I don’t know what they called it but that is the description. Thanks for sharing something that is really a weird vehicle.

@@What.its.like. Allis Chalmers Model G garden tractor. I think a company called Tuff-Bilt makes an updated version now. The engine is behind the driver and the implements are mounted in front of the driver. It looks like a mini road grader.
The Allis Chalmers model G. Rear mounted engine, the operator sat between the middle and the engine, allowing excellent visibility of the mid-mounted implements.
That thing is so cool. Reminds me of something I would see driving around the airshows my pop took me to back in the 70's.
The accessories are really cool I would love to find one in private hands that has the accessories and go over how all the accessories work..

An obscure and rare vehicle indeed. I'd guess that many were used as intended, and were scrapped as they wore out or rusted out. Maybe a few still hidden away in the back of a barn behind decades of more unused stuff. Crosley got a bad reputation from the early 'Cobra' engines which impacted their future sales. That engine was chosen for it's cheapness; it was a wartime design meant to be used only for long enough to win the war, and even then it barely met those needs. The Farm-o-Road concept was good and filled a need, but that need was very small as for farms to be economically viable they had to be bigger which required real tractors and trucks. Home gardens were too small to need these, and most of those were tilled by hand due to lack of money for machinery. Eventually the 'garden tractor' emerged and while not roadworthy, they did serve the small farm purpose better than this did. It would still be neat to have one 😁

I would love to go to Germany one day I definitely want to do the auto Bon I’ve never been across the pond I’ve been to the Caribbean though and I’ve been as far south as Aruba which is only 20ish miles away from South America.. Almost went to South America on that trip just to say that I’ve been there but they were having conflicts in Venezuela the people in Aruba persuade otherwise they said you might be able to go there but getting back might be an issue

Super interesting vehicle it was marketed almost as a Swiss Army knife of utility vehicles it was a great idea just evidently poorly executed.

I've known about these my whole life...but never saw one in person! Looks about as useful as a King Midget.
And yes, every summer cottage my famiily rented had a Crosley refrigerator and they all worked great! Too bad their cars were'nt as efficient, they'd still be in business!

I work for a small equipment shop, thank you for explaining the difference between a lawn tractor Vs. a garden tractor, a garden tractor is a little bigger and has a more powerful engine with a larger cutting deck, you can do more with a garden tractor. I have a member of family out that way in Morgantown and when visiting them we used to see a lot of show cars go by over the years due to there being local car shows around. It's neat to see they have something local that you can see old cars whenever ya like. Also I remember before that was the Auto Mall Its was used as a Furniture store. And before that it was actually a local Mall called Mom's Mall. But Malls are dying sadly and that one died long ago. Hope this Auto Mall doesn't die however.

I live 5.5 hours from there so I go there once maybe twice a month depending I try to do 15-25 cars in one day and then I’ll have enough content for the month they have 1000 cars for sale it just makes sense I don’t have to go looking for cars.. I’m going to try and go a few more places this month to separate things for variety also thought about doing a few new cars as well

That is so awesome!!!! I live near Morgantown. The Roof Palomino was a tractor and a lawn mower that had an opposed twin. I know a guy who put a crosslet in one and it is really great. New subscriber here. I am getting ready to start my TH-cam channel with a 1928 Morgan MG special 4 wheel three wheeler. I am also sourcing the parts to build my version of the pembleton. I would love to start a shop/garage that specializes in pre WWI race cars and makes kits and turn key sports cars similar to a Morgan or Pembleton. We should get together sometime. I will try and find you on Face book.

Those windshield wiper motors look like vacuum motors, very common for the time.
One of the Crosley OHC variants was also adapted and used vertically in the also failed Homelite outboard motors

It looks like a road legal platform tractor for hauling luggage at European train-stations only with seats instead of a cage for carrying suitcases.
Most modern small tractors, dont put out much more nominal torque and horsepower than these did.
You should do a video on the history of that motor and its many uses thru the forties up thru the seventies.

when i was a littlee kid my parents friend had an open top crosley, i dont think it was this exact model but close.
A telescopic steering wheel might have been a good idea.
The engine continued to be built for a while after car production ended, it was used on refrigerated trailers for long haul trucks

I drove around England in the late seventies and there were still Crosleys and Coopers all over the place. The English seemed to love tiny cars. It was like driving in a heard of sheep! One of the people attending a Horse show I was at had a little woody wagon that I loved the look of. He invited me to get in it and look around. The man had a cruel sense of humour. It was as tight as the first version of the Honda Civic! Trust me, that's tiny!
I would love to have one of these! However forty-five grand for a toy is a bit much for me.
I’m 6 foot 2 inches it just didn’t feel natural to me I didn’t feel tumbed out enough there was nowhere for my legs to go lol but like I said in the video I knew an older gentleman he was a little shorter than me and he had one but he sold it to buy the super sports Crosley

Jeep had an agricultural jeep model too. Both probably too light for farm work.
So in todays dollars it's cheaper than a side by side and would be far more handy for actual work. Most of em around me are used for booze cruising and that's about it.

Let's not forget the other appliances Crosley marketed bedsides the radio. Our first refrigerator when I was a kid growing up in the 1950s was a Crosley Shelvador. He was the guy who came up with the idea of putting shelves in a refrigerator door.
