    i used to have that same box fan. i bought it from home depot. the higher speed setting was actually not too extremely loud noise but runs whisper quiet breeze and motor on background. i love it. i used high speed when i sleep to block off the sound from outside area by using on a window.

      I find it to be rather loud, especially compared to vintage box fans. A metal blade moves quite a bit more air with far less noise.

      It works OK to move air around a room, but it’s not going to do much for moving air through a window. The blade is too flimsy and caves under any resistance.

    This is definitely the best video of a Lasko 3733 I’ve seen. I totally agree, these are good for the price. And for being the most common fans nowadays, they do work. But, I’d personally go with a Cool Colors or a Power Plus, because in my opinion they are worth the extra money, if you can afford one of them.

    Hi, I found a fan like this in the trash and fixed it with a new thermal fuse. I oiled it with Zoom Spout oil and cleaned it with an air compressor, etc…
    I also have a Sears box fan 453.812000 with brown blade I got in 1984. I use it every day in the summer to blow air out the upstairs window and open downstair windows to let cool air in during the night kind of like an attic fan. It was pretty dusty so I cleaned it and oiled the motor. It is 37 years old and still works good. The grill is made out of very brittle styrene plastic, and I have had to glue many piece back in with Devcon 2-ton epoxy with a 30 min. set time. Some pieces were missing so I cut some wood strips and glued them in. I also made the grill hole where the plug goes through bigger so the plug can fit through so I don’t have to unhook the wires to do maintenance. I reinforced this hole with some wood strips so if you pull on the cord it won’t break other fins. The handle broke may years ago so I just tied a rope loop onto it, which lasted 20 years and is still working :). By watching your other videos I learned to oil the felt around the bearing. I notice that this fan has holes like bicycle spokes.
    I think this is to help cool the motor. I was wondering if the Lasko box fan had some holes in it it might stay cooler and not have the thermal fuse burn out? I was thinking of drilling some holes into the Lasko box fan blade face to help cool it so it doesn’t burn out the new thermal fuse I put in. I’ll have to space them evenly so the balance doesn’t get messed up.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the holes are just part of the molding process, they can't possibly let much, if any, air through. As long as you keep the blades and motor clean, the Lasko will last a long time.

    Got one of these a few days ago, a 3733C. Gotta say it's a massive step up compared to the absolute travesty called the Air King (more like air peasant) 9723. The blades were thin and poorly pitched, and the motor gave it far too much power, causing a nasty unbearable noise even on 1. The 3733C has a pleasant noise, its "air to noise" ratio is great. My only concern is that the blades seem to be poorly balanced and some weight needs to be put on it to stop the vibration. Lovely breeze though and thanks to your maintenance video I plan on keeping it for a long time.

    I would ague that while the cost of the Lakewood is higher but the cost per overall life span for the Lakewood is lower. If your Lakewood is 40 plus years old.. Let’s see if the 3733 from 2018 you have is alive in 40 years with regular use. There is a reason the ‘economy’ P223s are still plentiful.
    Of course is collectors can make anything last. But the average person doesn’t service their fan and being the case the Lakewoods still survive way better than a 3733. Great video as always and enjoy the discussion!

    I have two fans of this model and another Lasko box fan, but a different model. This model is exceptionally loud, particularly on speeds 2 and 3, and I agree it would be difficult watching TV or trying to relax while having it on. But, one thing I've noticed about all box fans is that they're pretty loud... not just the Lasko ones. Plus, it's not advertised as quiet... lol. However, I believe it moves a LOT of air on all 3 speeds, often to the point where I would mainly use speed 1 and rarely 2. The first one I bought in 2016 and it still works great in 2020! The other 2 I bought just last year and also work fine. Longevity is good... as long as you clean and maintain them, they WILL last. I don't like using the feet on the fan, and all the Lasko box fans I have (plus the ones I've seen at schools, and my friend's houses) operate without feet and don't tip over or get off-balanced. I don't necessarily think these are bad fans - maybe I've just had really good luck with them, I don't know. But that's my review. Agree to disagree, I guess.

    • @JordanU

      I can't say for certain because I don't have either of those, but I'd guess they have the 1.0 amp motor as found in the better box fans, like the WeatherShield or PowerPlus models.. Most of Lasko's fans use a flavor of this motor..

  • @andrewg593
    @andrewg593 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    These fans aren't the absolute worst fans out there, but the vintage fans are loads better than these. I had a galaxy fan from 2009. It did move a decent breeze, but it was also very loud like the current ones. It also did not have a startup sound. My 1998 Lasko 3733 moves much more air than one of these. I can confirm that the motors are not as powerful as the older shaded pole motors, because I tried to put a 3rd gen Lakewood blade on that motor and it ran slow.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that the older box fans were overall better fans, however these motors are 8-poles, whereas the older box fan motors were 6 poles.. Less poles produces more speed, so your experiment doesn't necessarily show that the motor is less powerful, it just concurs with motor theory..

    • @andrewg593
      @andrewg593 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's true that less poles produce more speed, but the new fans still don't last nearly as long as the vintage ones. There are some vintage fans that have been working for 50 years or longer without maintenance and they continue to run, while the modern fans quit working after 5 years. They also use lighter, flimsier blades because the motors can't handle the load of the heavier blades from the past.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true..

  • @GrillsBare
    @GrillsBare ปีที่แล้ว

    The depth dimension decrease from the old box fans makes them depend on the feet to keep them from tipping over causing the blades to break when fan is on high speed or if they get accidentally tipped over so imo allowing for inflation doesn't compensate for a cheap made fan that has been reduced in size so more of them will fit in a shipping container bound for Wal-Mart or wherever. If you can find an old G.E. or Westinghouse box fan buy it. It may be ,although being older, the fan that you could use for years to come . Don't by a Lasco

      I am trying to figure out what brand it was exactly, the model I just discribed I pulled out of a junk pile years ago Must of been produced some time in the early to mid2000s.
      Sadly mine stopped working and I threw it out. The microprocessor in it would lock up intermittently probably explains
      why it was thrown out in the first place.
      It was cool to look at for sure though and it did put out a nice stream of air.

    I don't know why they bother with the "feet"; they need to figure out a way, regardless of the low cost, to make these box fans sturdier and capable of ignoring action not directly addressed to them. I had one in a small rented room with hardwood flooring and in such close-quarters, these fans just have to react to the slightest brush-up, falling over and impacting wood flooring with an obnoxious clang.
    Sit a guitar case or gym duffel bag beside it..."Oh, this has something to do with ME!"
    "My life would be empty if I didn't fall over. I'm supposed to fall over, RIGHT? I mean, that's what a fan is supposed to do if a guitar case brushes up against a fan, right? I don't have to wait until the human being to whom I belong WISHES TO move me, do I? I'm free to fall over, make a loud clang and clutter, and misalign the fan blades, right? I mean, why ELSE is the human being setting a gym bag next to me?"

    I wonder why Lasko stopped putting holes for a stand on their box fans? It would've been nice at least if they could've add holes for a stand and make them less flimsy and make the motor a litter larger and have a stronger capacitor and yeah. I also at one point wanted a 1998-99 model with the D shaped blades but I don't have any luck to find one in a thrift store, the only vintage box fan I saw at a thrift store was a 1997 Lakewood brace bladed box fan and I didn't get it because I didn't have 20$ when I found it after spending some money on a telephone.

      There's no holes because Lasko doesn't want to spend money adding features to the fan that a minuscule amount of consumers will even notice is missing, much less use.. They're not trying to produce a quality product with this model, they're trying to make something that's budget-friendly..

    that logic is wrong lol if ur gonna inflate the price for the box fan u would have to inflate every other price to make that accurate if not that you might as well not inflate the box fan price lol

      Jordan U i rushed that comment lol. im saying how he said that a box fan would be $58 today. even tho it is priced at $25 at a store due to inflation. if you are going to do that for the box fan price u must do it for any other prices involved in the experiment. simple. lol

      but yeah agree on the new boxfans they are sometimes made very shitty when products are rushed out of the factory you can end up with mediocre products. Not all the modern fans are shit though. Like any machine, if you take good care of it and service it it should last a long time.
