    I have OCD but haven't seen the movie. From what you say they really didn't do any research on it at all which is a shame.
    It's more about the intrusive thoughts that scare the sufferer into doing various actions (connected and logical or not) in am effort to prevent the subject of the scary thoughts from coming true. The act of doing the actions give some relief or greater feeling of safety.
    The thing about the car sounds totally absurd.
    Love this series! Nice to know what to try watching and what to be sure to avoid! 😊

      Same here, I have OCD but haven't seen the movie, and that car scene seems so odd... that doesn't seem like a ritual that would help alleviate anxiety, which is what the rituals are all about. Also, as Wynn said, OCD doesn't make you stupid! I really don't understand what they were trying to do with that scene.

      @@ErinaBleu I think that he wants to wash everything with soap makes sense. If you have mysophobia which comes often with OCD (I have it) it is totally relatable. But yes...OCD doesn´t make you stupid.

      oh, I guess that's true. I probably have mysophobia too tbh, but only really with my hands. I guess it depends on the person. I think the part that throws me off is when he tries to turn the car on after that, expecting it to work... so strange lol

      I actually have two close friends who both have OCD. Neither of them act anything like the man in that movie. Hell, both of them have rituals related to cleanliness. One of them washes her hands so often that the skin of her knuckles just cracks open and bleeds sometimes and she has permanent rashes on her hands up to where she washes them. But she doesn’t look at the cracks in her hands and then act confused as to why she’s bleeding. She knows exactly why they’re bleeding and she hates that they bleed but she’s not confused because she’s not stupid.
      The other is more about her environment being tidy than herself being clean, from what I can tell. We actually share an apartment and one time I woke up to her cleaning the dishes at 2:30am because she just couldn’t let them be in the sink anymore. They had to get put away where they belonged. And she apologized the next day for waking me up. I was fine with it, because I understand it’s something that causes her a lot of grief.
      So yeah. Not the greatest representation of OCD.

    So my aunt has an extremely severe case of OCD that went untreated her entire life. They didn't recognize it until she was an adult and then she refused to seek help because her fears and paranoia caused her to distrust doctors and medications.
    It eventually morphed into OCPD (Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder) that culminated in her living in a van in my grandmother's driveway storing excrement in boxes before we (her family) were FINALLY able to show that she wasn't capable of making decisions for herself and get her a guardian (my mom, her sister) and get her treatment. She would probably have died if we hadn't stepped in and it was so sad that the laws prevented us from helping her sooner.
    When she went into the State Mental Hospital, they were floored and everyone there said she had the worst case of OCD they had ever seen. This is a pretty well-known hospital, so the surrounding states send difficult-to-treat patients here and the staff were treating the most extreme cases; very little surprised them anymore.
    Anyway, the point of all this is that my aunt is a very intelligent woman, but when she got into the midst of her rituals she would be so entirely engrossed in it that she would become completely unaware of the consequences of her actions. She would go into bathrooms and lock the door and do washing rituals that ended up almost flooding the entire bathroom and then seem surprised that she had gotten water everywhere. She wears hospital socks on her hands everywhere she goes and has worn some sort of glove or covering on her hand for as long as I can remember. She has always stored everything she owns in bags - wrapping each item in a bag and then placing that into a grocery bag, carrying around several grocery bags on her arms. She's literally been called, "the bag lady" in communities she has lived in. And she holds her hands and arms stiffly away from her body so they won't accidentally touch anything and get dirty. These are her more mild symptoms.
    If the woman involved in making this movie had a brother with a very extreme case of OCD, then it is not outside the realm of reason for this movie to have been an accurate portrayal of what OCD can become if left untreated. Even him dumping water all over his engine and then wondering why his car won't start. It's not that he's stupid, but that he was so engrossed in the ritual of washing that he wasn't paying attention to what was actually happening and what the consequences of his actions would be. I haven't seen the movie, but compared to my aunt's struggles, what you described was actually mild.
    So is this an accurate portrayal of what most people with OCD experience? Not even close. But it is not outside the realm of possibility for what OCD can be in the most extreme situations.

They aren’t touching so technicallyyou are keep clean clean and dirty dirty. I’m sorry about your aunt. As someone that suffers with OCD and have family history of it I understand her rituals. I don't have germaphobic OCD(I'm a hoarder actually) and I haven't seen the film, but I usually don't trust film portrayals of OCD. In my experience, while DID is treated as a big scary dangerous disorder, OCD tends to be reaaaally downplayed in seriousness. People just think it's being neat and tidy and keeping things straight. They don't ever think about how I can't throw a single thing away "because something bad will happen" or how some people wash their hands so often they crack and bleed, or that I check the locks three of sometimes more times a night, or that some of us have very scary intrusive thoughts, or that I obsessively pick/create scabs or pluck hair out of various places for literal hours.

      this sounds just like my mom. she isn't diagnosed with anything but she's a real hoarder and she's scared that if we get rid of things without her specifically giving the ok on every item we'll somehow get rid of something extremely precious and important, which sounds a lot like the "if I get rid of this something bad will happen/I'll need this exact specific thing for the first time in years the day after I get rid of it". She is also suuuuper obsessive about locking doors, and makes everyone check that every door in the house is locked before we leave the house. She'll even make me pull on the door after I've confirmed it's locked multiple times and she can see its locked from the position of the knob. Maybe its OCD. I wouldn't know, but Ill try to be kinder to her abut it even though it can be frustrating at times

      I definitely agree with you. I check my doors and windows multiple times. Like literally I spend about 30 minutes a night checking the locks on my front and back door. I flick the lights multiple times, I check the stove multiple times before leaving the house or going to bed, I check on the car and the alarm multiple times. Being late makes me crazy. It's hard but luckily I am better are managing then I was.

      I agree, and it reminded me of the way I was treated by previous therapists, before we got a proper diagnosis of DID. Our previous therapists literally told me, to my face, that I was a delusion, and that I needed to be gotten rid of or merged with Doug so that he (the "real" one) can live a "normal" life. That filled me with so much confusion that I actually started cutting myself to make myself feel more real. So yeah, I get pretty angry when anyone tries to say that any alters are delusional. - Leyna

      That's so awful! I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Nobody deserves that. Honestly, people need to learn that alters are people just like anyone else. Fictives and factives aren't any less real than any other part of the system. I hope your new therapist is better for all of you now ❤️

      @douglasvincent5925 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you, George. And yes, our current therapist is MUCH better! He really understands DID, and understands the fact that ALL of us are just as real as Doug. And really, I'm not all that mad at our previous therapists. Yes, they way they treated me hurt...a LOT...but I don't think they were intentionally trying to hurt me. The real problem, which does make me angry, is that there is not nearly enough education about DID, dissociation, or even trauma in general in schools of psychology and psychiatry today. It is inexcusable, in my opinion. My previous therapists didn't treat me that way because they were bad people, they did it because they were ill-educated about DID. They were trying to help, but didn't know how to properly help someone like us. That needs to change. I've met some wonderful people online who are trying to change it, and I truly hope they succeed. - Leyna

    This is so cool. I have a different type of OCD, so I can’t say that it’s an accurate portrayal. It’s stupid he doesn’t understand why the car won’t start. Triggers and compulsions don’t have to be a routine, but a lot of the time they are. I’ve got one compulsion I’m really embarrassed of, but one of them is that if something isn’t in rainbow order I HAVE to rearrange it or I’ll start to shake. And It’s a very specific order too. Dark reds, light reds, red orange, orange, yellow, light green, dark green, light blue, dark blue, indigo, purple, pink, brown, white, grey, black. Its gotten to the point sometimes where I’ve spent hours swatching colours before doing my homework, gotten in trouble in class, and one time I rearranged library books by colour when i was little and the librarian had to explain it doesn’t work that way sweetie. But yeah. Compulsions can really be anything. Anyways, its sunday here so i gotta sleep. Night y’all! Great video.

      @SoulSystem-ff6jo ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is late, but explaining that you want to get to know the other members of your boyfriend’s system AS THEMSELVES, for who THEY are, is key. Let him (and them) know that you’re interested in meeting them even if they’re not like him in certain regards. If you’re truly prepared, make it clear that you want to know them even if they don’t like you or wouldn’t personally date you, for example. It meant a lot to one of our protectors when our previous boyfriend treated her how she wanted to be treated (i.e., as a respected friend worth listening to) rather than how some of the rest of us wanted to be treated (i.e., all lovey-dovey with lots of affection).

    What If It Works seems like it's a good movie to highlight what happens when you research something while writing about it vs when you dont. I saw a video awhile ago where the creator talked about HEAVILY researching DID to get the portrayal right. But it seems like she's just gone off watching her brother for the OCD portrayal.

    • @thisbeem2714
      @thisbeem2714 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps exaggerating the OCD was a way of dealing with her brother's OCD, and not really an accurate portrayal... Or perhaps she merely exaggerated what she observed.
      I'm interested in watching it, just for the experience of watching DID being portrayed.

    • @mudkipjuice
      @mudkipjuice 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It wasnt an exaggeration, she just copied behaviours her brother exhibits without researching the reasoning why or how he goes about it. There are plenty of people with OCD that behave that way, but without full context the portrayal is flat bordering ableist.

    I am diagnosed with OCD, I am on prescription medication for it. I haven’t seen the movie, but I can give you my personal experience and that might give some insight. All of the methods I undertake to “prevent” something bad from happening never damages the thing I must apply the method to. I hope I’m making sense.
    Basically it feels like extreme anxiety if I don’t do something a certain way. It’s like all the bad things that could happen, will happen if I don’t do something a particular way. However, damaging something would be counterproductive. It’s difficult to explain, but it would be worse if I damaged something in the process.
    I hope this makes some sense. Thank you for all that you are doing in shedding light on mental illness. I think it’s wonderful that you’re taking the time to actually be informative on these subjects!

    I will admit, I am a person with both a dissociative disorder (unknown if DID or OSDD) and attenuated psychosis. This six souls movie is clearly poorly researched, not good representation and irrelevant. However your comment about how Alters cannot be delusions got me thinking.
    I have had alters that were delusions. People who seemed at the time to be like the rest of the head mates, but later vanished or did things which in hindsight made it very clear that they were delusions. To me this did not make them any less of a real person. In general i understand that my whole system may in fact be a hallucination, and knowing this I still except us as real.
    Have you heard of this type of plurality before? I am curious I guess to just see what your system and others thing about this, I have never heard anyone else talk about this. (G)

      we have psychosis too, we're diagnosed with general psychotic disorder or something like that but it's most likely paranoid schizophrenia, and we're also a bunch of alters. From our research it seems like OSDD 1b. We think about whether or not it's all a delusion all the time, but one thought always serves to alleviate those worries. Our alters function exactly like an alter would function if they were real, from the start it all worked the way it's supposed to, having a headspace, fronting and co fronting, it all lines up perfectly and we didn't know anything about DID or OSDD at the time, so it seems impossible to me that a delusion perfectly replicated a disorder we knew nothing about. So, I guess there's a thought for you if you're feeling unsure, it's possible to have psychosis and also a dissociative disorder at the same time

    Hi Wyn,
    I was aware of "The three faces of Eve" as I saw a documentary about "Eve White" and her journey a while ago. That was where I first learned about MPD (or DID as it's currently called). Hers is an interesting case indeed. Though I never have watched the film.
    I did give "What if it works?" a watch just now and I have to agree that the personalities depicted are very well-portrayed and flushed out as separate characters. Especially G and Grace's struggle with seeing eye to eye with her is use very well as a focal plot point. The OCD portrayal, I won't comment on since I have nearly zero exposure to anyone with OCD. But I bet they have put a Hollywood spin on it and I won't take it to represent people with OCD as a general case. It's a fairly good movie though.
    As always, a great video. I love how much effort your entire system puts into your content. Also, give Danniel a high-five for me.

    I remember watching the original Sybil film in a psychology class, and since I personally have a problem with dissociation with my autism (and more than likely PTSD from my own childhood/teenage trauma ) I was excited to see the movie.
    While the original does go more indepth on Sybil's trauma in her youth, it is much more focused on Sybil and her alters, trying to find out what's going on with them, and trying to become better, rather than on her doctor. I was deeply horrified at the trama because it hit more close to home than I was expecting (both with my own trauma and a very dear friend's trauma to a much greater extent) , but I still think they did a somewhat good job explaining DID/MPD from Sybil's perspective.
    From what I remember, Sybil and her alters were highly disfunctional at first, and had no knowledge of each other. While most of my experience with DID has been my own research (my biggest Aspie focus is what makes people do the things they do (which is a core component in my other interests like psychology, theology, and serial killers to name a few), and through amazingly informative channels like yours, I know that it's possible, even though there are systems that resemble yours, so I guess it really just depends on how Sybil's system really worked, so we may never know how true to life that portion actually was.

      Shirley Mason has not stated that she made anything up..at all..other psychologists have stated that they believe that Wilbur coaxed Mason into believing that she has dissociative identity disorder or multiple personality at the time to secure a book deal...but Mason has never stated anything about lying or making anything up.

      I have heard that Shirley Mason said it was made up. And perhaps she did. But I have yet to meet or learn of a plural system that hasn't doubted their experience or diagnosis.
      With the whole world (as it probably felt) accusing her of faking it or being delusional, I can imagine she may have questioned it. I have... The Entropy System has a video about that... Others too. So, even if Shirley Mason said that... I don't believe that's a good enough reason to decide the whole thing was made up.

    So my only suggestion is the TV show Doom Patrol, it's not 100% about DID, but there is a main character in the show with DID, and watching that helped me kind of begin to understand DID, after my boyfriend told me he has it. It was really helpful, and now watching all your videos I'm learning more and more and know more about it then he does. He wasn't clinically diagnosed like you were, but more diagnosed by someone else who has it, and it makes sense and i love and get along with all of his alters. I have OCD and although adrian's compulsions are pretty over the top and kind of absurd at times, I felt like it was an overall accurate representation of the disorder, and it kind of showed some of the ways that we can be stopped from living our lives completely due to compulsions, and especially because he seems to have pretty severe contamination OCD, it really did not come off as that unbelievable. I felt like I could relate to Adrian in many ways, not so much through literal comparisons, but moreso in the debilitating nature of his compulsions, and his frustration with trying to live his life and overcome them, so he can be more readily available for his loved ones to interact with. It's hard to explain, but it feels like my mind is always off in the distance, making it very hard to come back to earth and re-calibrate, so to speak.
    It was undoubtedly not handled nearly as well as DID in this movie, but I was touched by the character of Adrian, and I felt like I was able to relate to him in many ways, despite my compulsions not being such a significant interruption.
    I understand that there were some points of the movie where his compulsions and frustrations are somewhat exaggerated, and can seem hard to relate to, but I've personally been there. You're in a rush, you have shit to do and.... you have to comply with whatever compulsions your brain tells you to, I suppose. While I wouldn't go so far as to say it was an accurate depiction of everyday life with OCD, I do think that it very accurately showed the many ways in which it can be debilitating, and severely reduce one's quality of life. It has a serious snowball effect, and my day can easily be ruined by a few things going wrong, at the wrong time.

    I’m glad to see these reviews, thank you! I will tell you that my late mother had the worst case of OCD that our province’s team of specialists had seen in any of their careers. She was so disabled they literally couldn’t help her and didn’t know where to even begin as the multitude of facets in her illness were complicated beyond treatment. She really gave up on life after that. I always felt that it was my fault she did what she did to me., etc, so all those secret details, some I recall, some I’ve heard from two other family members., on top of the alcoholism in the house etc, I just had kind of an eye open of validity with my diagnosis. You understandably likely would hardly believe some things I could tell you. The paranoia in ocd is way undertreated. I guess delusions is the proper words.
    Anywho, just felt like adding that. If I end up the last living member of my family, I will write some books, or hopefully have them ready to go. I don’t want to harm anyone in her life.
    I could always leave them for someone else like a lawyer friend to release and try to publish or self publish once I’m gone if I’m next.
    Oh my gosh I need a gentle hug😢

I don't really know how to feel about to be totally honest. Hey,
    Could you do a video like this about Korean drama ,,Kill me, Heal me"?
    It's about a man with DID. Of course, as it's Korean drama, there is a romance in it, which may not be well written and relatable, but when it comes to representing DID - in my opinion it's quite good (except the end - I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm sure everyone, who watched it, will understand what I'm talking about). And sometimes switches are exaggerated. But still, I think it's quite appropriate.
    Buy I don't have DID, so I would like to hear an opinion about it from someone who has.

    Want to know why Sybil was such bad representation? The real Sybil faked having DID to (probably) spend more time with her psychiatrist and get her attention because she had a special interest in DID and wanted to study it. It was only after a whole case study was completed that she confessed the truth but at that point the damage had been done and a BOOK had been written. Thanks, Sybil, for being a big reason that people (esp. professionals) don't trust that DID actually exists!

    Hi Wyn, I just started watching your channel yesterday and think all of you are doing a great job of helping people understand DID. This said, I also think you are a unique case (in a positive way of course) bc you were so open to accepting that you have DID and welcoming to your system, then to take it to another level by creating the videos which not only helped you understand them better but allowed them to understand themselves better and read real life feed of themselves to grow individually as well. Which is amazing because your system practices good communication and boundaries. However, a lot of these movies were based on real life stories of ppl living with DID in a time that not a lot of research or cases existed.
    Which makes me wonder if these movies are good representation of how DID existed during their time bc they weren't really aware of their system and didn't create boundaries, communication, have videos to learn about each other's existence, etc. For example, Kim Kim didn't really know what happened for 5 or 6 years and came back to a brand new world with the internet and open lines of communication and a world with greater acceptance and open minds, etc.
    Of course, no one has the answer to this but it might be possible that the movies are great representations of how DID has positively progressed with more research, openness to accept mental health and how to seek the right treatment based on personal experiences and start to speak about them open lines of communication, etc.?
    Hopefully, I didn't misspeak or word anything inappropriately and if I did it was an honest mistake. Keep doing you, all of you!

    Hi, I know people have commented on the OCD, but I wanted to add my experience. I have OCD, and I'll use an example of mine: I regularly spray my cell phone with disinfectant (Lysol, etc). I'm fully aware that, should the disinfectant get into my phone, it will break. I think that the idea of the man scrubbing his car (and even his engine) down with soapy water is extremely realistic, but I dont see someone slopping buckets and buckets of soapy water into their car (wiping/scrubbing, yes, flooding, no) and then being shocked when it doesn't start. I havent seen the movie, but just know people with OCD aren't like that.

    If I had to guess, the reason did was done well, but ocd wasn't was because the director's brother had ocd. She probably didn't feel the need to research it like she did for did because she knew someone with ocd, but know someone with a disorder and understanding the disorder are two different things and sometimes people don't realize that. She probably understood part of ocd without realizing she still had more to learn.

    Thank you once again for another thorough review! I appreciated your previous DID in the media videos, and this one as well, because you are helping people to understand what is accurate and what isn't. And for those of us who also have DID, you are helping us to know which ones we will find uplifting, and which ones to avoid like the plague! I haven't seen any of these movies yet. We have been meaning to watch The Three Faces of Eve, but haven't gotten around to it yet, but I'm pleased to hear that it's actually pretty good. I have seen the original version of Sybil, but not the newer one. From what you said about the newer one, it has some of the same flaws as the original. That is, it focuses too much on the most "freaky" and scary aspects of DID, and shows each alter at their worst. I think the original also tried to make the viewer think that Dr. Wilbur invented the diagnosis of MPD, if I remember right, but it's been a while since I've seen it, so I may be mistaken. I actually really want to see "What If It Works?" based on your review, even though the treatment of OCD in the movie will probably make me cringe as well. I don't have OCD, so I don't know that much about it, but your description of that car scene sounds pretty cringe-worthy. Anyway, thanks again for your reviews! - Leyna

    She talks about her mothers trauma and briefly says her Mom suffered from DID but does not talk about the mothers childhood as having any trauma.
    Later in the movie you find out the Grandmother(her mom) was a cult leader and only wanted grandchildren to sacrifice them. It also talks about how the grandma is crazy and sick.

    My cousin has a similar form of OCD to the one described. I haven't seen the film, but from the outside it can sometimes look like the scene shown. I personally have had a mild version of OCD which I have worked very hard to make manageable. I was always very worried someone would see one of my rituals to be honest, so I tried very hard to make them as unremarkable as possible. I think it sounds like the Film maker might have been too close to the OCD without having it themselves which would mean they might not have felt the need to do the research you have shown they did with the DID. OCD has many levels and it's hard to pin down when it goes from being a coping mechanism into an issue for the person who has it. I know I used to have to jump from my doorway to my bed (which was across the room) so as not to walk by my bed. I also slept with all my lights on and music playing. I have to sleep with my back, my head, and my feet all enclosed, so I have a day bed. I used to only be able to sleep on the couch. From the outside this looks very weird I'm sure. So even with my fairly small rituals I could see how someone who had it more severely might look very odd to someone outside of them. I'm not an expert this is just my own personal experience with it. I now sleep with my light off and just a low level blue nightlight. And no radio. Recently I can sleep with my back facing out and not facing a wall, for me that's a big thing.

    Thank you for doing these! I have been struggling to find good DID representatives in media, and so far you're my best resource with your series on these.
    Fortunately, "What if it Works" is free on Amazon Prime, so I can watch it without buying it and see if it's worth sharing with others despite the OCD representative issues.
    I'll probably get a copy of the Three Faces of Eve too. I've heard good things about the book (by the person, not the one by her therapist).
    If I find a movie or show, I'll definitely let you know, but if you ever feel like picking up a book (just for you, not for the show), I'd recommend "Twenty-four Shadows" by Tanya J. Peterson. The writing is pretty good (not the best, but not bad), but I really appreciate the descriptions of even subtle symptoms so far (I'm about 3/4 through it). The doctor has been pretty good about explaining and treating our MC so far too, so it's been a good journey to understanding DID. Just having those little moments and side symptoms shown has been wonderful for me - I feel legitimate and less alone reading about someone going through the same things, so that's the main reason I recommend it.

    (10 months too late)
    from what a I remember of the original movie of Sybil (it's been awhile), the other alters, who's names I don't remember, were out more, and I remember it focusing more on Sybil although the psychiatrist was the narrator. There were moments that when Sybil got stressed, another alter would switch out, typically a girl around 13 (?). I remember a scene where she was looking in a mirror and instead of seeing Sybil's body she saw herself as a younger girl. Some alters came out when they felt that the psychiatrist was getting too personal or too close to the trauma/when something threatening was happening.
    It also had a scene where Sybil was under hypnosis and met her alters, although they were the same ages as they identified with.

    It's so interesting to hear that The Three Faces of Eve is accurate and relatively respectful. I feel like I need to see it now! I really want to see a movie with accurate and respectful representation of DID

    You know representation is dry when a 1950s movie is more informed and better representation than basically all of current day movies

    Hi another fantastic video
    Thank you
    Im really hoping to watch the middle two films
    I just wanted to say (I haven't seen the What If It Works film but I have D.I.D and OCD the things like wearing the gloves and walking with your hands infront of you so not to touch germs can be a trait of OCD as far as I'm aware it is a very rare one (but I don't personally do it) I do things like constantly counting 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 9 and checking locks or getting dressed in a certain order (like my left foot has to go into my pants leg first) and the trait of mine I hate the most is I can't go to sleep until I've been for a wee 3 times (so yeah things can get pretty weird and I guess you may call some of it quirky) as for the car washing scene you showed and explained (I think that a person who has OCD may well get so caught up in their rituals that they could do something as far fetched as this but I think your right on the fact (and I don't believe) a person with a PHD in engineering etc would be confused as to why his car wouldn't start if he had just flooded the engine
    Thank you for an amazing video and showing us potential films to watch with our carer
    Love Lex and Co
    xxx xxx xxx

    Read Sybil as a teen and later watched the original film based on the book. It was the first representation I'd ever seen of DID, and I found it fascinating, but I don't remember it well now. The book was written by the host of the system and I think the film was also in her perspective. There was a lot of amnesia and loss of time, but I don't remember much else. 🤷

    I’ve read about Eve and saw videos of both Eve White and Eve Black and Jane. I’m gonna be looking for the movie cause you recommend it.
    I don’t know if you’re into that sort of genre, but in the second season of Iron Fist there is a character that has DID, and it kinda struck me as a bit insulting the way it’s portrayed. I had your educational videos to compare that character to, and I thought it wasn’t done right. But I would love to hear your opinion of it.
    It’s only in the second season, so I understand if you aren’t into that genre to be able to watch the whole thing just for one character in a few episodes.
    Thank you again for a most educational video!! ❤️❤️

    Thanks a lot, have you seen “All around the Town“ from Mary Higgins Clark. Ive seen this once as a child and later read the book, actually that might be one start reason for me being interested in Psychologie. Which definitly helped me a lot through my own issues.

    I have two pieces of media that would be cool for this series. All Around the Town by Mary Higgins Clark. I don't know if there's a movie version but so far the book seems decent. Also Yu Yu Hakusho had a villain with DID. Even though he is a villain I would like to hear your thoughts on him and how they handle DID. Great work as always Wyn.

    I just had an idea for a great movie with a character with DID: a trial in court, with a bunch of witnesses for a crime, like a robbery or something. Some of them had seen the crime happening, some of them just heard what was happening, some of them were being kept as hostages. Near the end of the movie we find out that one of the hostages has DID and that all the people (just not that many so they are able to develop some depth to all characters) who weren't hostages (the ones that just saw or heard the crime happening) are actually people in a system and that the things they were doing when they saw or heard the crime were actually in their inner world.
    It would also be cool if one of these people in the system knew the person who was being accused and saw them doing something a few days before the crime and it matches all the other evidences. At the end we are shown that their therapist was helping in managing their switches in trial and they could at some point talk about how vital the good communication within the system was to the whole thing.

      Although I don't have DID so I'm just guessing this would be a great way to portray it because 1- There's a crime and a trial, but the system isn't being accused of commiting it; 2- it would portray the alters as average human beings who just happens to be all living in the same body; 3- it could get other people that don't have DID to empathize with a character that has the disorder without focusing on the trauma they went through childhood

    @Wyn I like your videos very much!!! I just want to say something to Sybil and the diagnosis. The movie just repeated exactly what was written in the book. They didn´t adapt the setting to the actual age. The book was released in 1973 and the DSM 5 listed DIS in 1980. I know that there were cases a long long time before like you said. But what I found in german texts is that there were few pschycologists who believed in DID until 1980 when the DSM take it in. Maybe i´m wrong ? But thats what I found before.

    • @TheEntropySystem
      @TheEntropySystem  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Multiple personality disorder didn’t have its own code in the DSM until the DSM 3 was released, but it was in the DSM 2 under “Hysterical Dissociative Disorder”. There was a lot of controversy on the legitimacy of the diagnosis but it was still in the DSM.

      @@TheEntropySystem Ah okay. Thank you. Sometimes it is a bit difficult to find (well researched) informarion about the history of DID before the 80's.

    • @DE-iv8if
      @DE-iv8if 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kitty cartoon - I found something similar, when I seached for it. MPD was first mentioned as a Diagnosis in the DSM-III (1980). In the DSM-II it was called something like Hysterical Neurosis (of the Dissociative Type). The DSM-5 (They changed the Way of the Spelling of the DSM with the DSM-5 too... :D ) lists it as Dissociative Identity Disorder.
      I think, one Reason for it was basically Trauma. DID is very much related to Trauma.. And in the Time before the DSM-III and 1980 People did not really "believe" in Trauma and what it does to People and "no-one" really talked openly about Trauma. So basically Psychological Trauma and Childhood Trauma was a Taboo in Society. People that had a Trauma like this were mostly seen as "hysterical" (hence the Name for it in the DSM-II ) or simply "to weak for Life" or just wanted Attention and were not really taken serious.. :/ And also because basically "no-one" talked about it openly everyone with such a Problem thought that they would be like the only Person in the World with such a Problem.. And they felt completely alone and isolated.. That was changed "by Books and Movies" about Cases of People with the Symptoms, but it still tooked "a While" until Society accepted it too.. :/

    I stumbled upon dissociaDID and from there a few other systems blogs. I have enjoied everyone's videos and the information that you put out. I found these videos discussing representation in media. I have to say that I am a huge fan of sense8. The characters are not part of a DID system, but I was wondering if it has any similarities (co-consciousness, intersystem relationships, etc).
    I love your channel. Keep up the good work bring light to DID and mental health issues..

    It may have been a year since y'all last did videos on this topic. But i would still like to see your review of the series Bates Motel. I don't even have did and still didn't feel it depicted the disorder accurately. It was almost like they tried but didn't try very hard.

    in the last year or two the story of Sybil and her Doctor were debunked. they admitted that the entire story was created to bolster the Doctors career and create a level of fame and that correlated into fortunes of a sort for each.. i just thought you might like a bit of the updated info. i really enjoyed this vid and truly like everything you all produce. thank you for being such a solid and accurate voice for the DID community
