I bought a used 2011 Jetta SE back in June 2020. It was clean, inside and under the hood, the six speed auto shifted very smooth. A few months after buying it the radio stopped working, a few months after that the transmission started screwing up, not shifting smooth, banging sounds, an abrupt bang when almost at a stop. Nobody wanted to work on it including a VW dealer, a new transmission cost $6500. I got rid of it and bought a Chevy Equinox, I’d never buy a VW again.
what exciting about cars in Malaya is that: take one example, VW Jetta. It is damn expensive! (compare to u guys in the US - far, far cheaper u could ever imagine). And when ME driving a Jetta; folks here salute me + earn respect as a successful person (in financial management). Car resemble identity & power here in malaya (exclude car sponsored by family if u one of those 'spoilsport')
Next model year, the GLI will bring back VW enthusiasts; it'll have the old multi-link rear suspension instead the torsion-beam that the current Jetta uses. GLI has the same engine 2.0L turbo as the GTI and Tiguan with 200 horses. But like many critics, the quality of the current car became more disappointing due to cost cutbacks -- mainly to compete with Corolla and Civic.
i personally own one of these, and i've sat in the previous generation and its not that noticeable in the handling, and i don't know about you but i don't touch the dash constantly to care
I am a bit disappointed that VW went with drum brakes and torsion-beam suspension on the rear, but I understand that they want to sell more cars in North America and by doing that, they needed to change the Jetta to make the price appealing. For me, I want 4 wheel disk and 4 wheel independent suspension and the 2.0 turbo, so I'll wait for the GLI.
an engine that has been around for 14 or so years, a FIVE speed gearbox, a profile more closely resembling the Chevrolet Impala, and an interior as colorful as Auschwitz. sorry VW, you've lost my vote on this one.
It’s been around so long because it’s a good reliable engine that will run a long time. I’d rather have the 5-cylinder than the modern Jettas that use a tiny 1.4 liter 4-cylinder that is turbo charged.
I get the feeling the market for this vehicle is too saturated without too much differentiation. At least with the former VWs you got luxury type amenities and feel for a little bit of a price premium. Now it's a sea of vanilla, unrefined.
@jsiszero Sounds like they are returning to their roots. Volkswagen literally translates to people's car. Ferdinand Porsche designed the VW Beetle as inexpensive car that could be easily mass produced and not use up too many natural resources. VW should stick to providing people with affordable, reliable, fuel efficient cars and leave the luxury car making to its partner Audi, and the sports cars to Porsche. To me, a luxurious VW is an oxymoron like a luxurious Chevy or a 4 cylinder Cadillac.
The interior is not meant to be "colourful", it't not a hippy van. It's a classy simplistic interior with quality materials (at least in the Euro version, you yanks tend to not mind being surrounded by shit plastics)
aside from the de-contenting especially with rear drum brakes and cheaper interior this is still a great car :) and thankfully they did away with all the chrome on the front end it was so ugly...great job Volkswagen!
VWs are not good cars. I mean, even a 1995 Geo Metro looks better than this. This thing is ugly, and my neighbor has a 98 Cabriolet and it doesnt move 20 feet with out another major mechanical part failing. Not to mention, the interior is more plasticy and shitty then a GM of the time. Sorry VW, you arent welcome. Made in Mexico isnt what we want.
Thank you John for not shouting during the review!
NOT SHOUTING???
For SHOUTING, see Scotty Kilmer.
Thumbs up if you own the 2.slow! 👍🏼
The 2015 brought back the independent rear and 4 wheel disc brakes...
*2014 did fyi along with the 1.8t

What killed the MK5 Jetta for me was the styling, but it is a much better car than the MK6 Jetta.
I have a Jetta with the base 2.slow 4 banger. It’s super slow but I love it 🥰
Yup. And 1 of VWs most reliable engines, too!
Ihave the same one it's hella slow but still fun
I love my 97 jetta. My parents '08 doesnt look too good to me but this one looks awesome
Para a nossa alegria!!

Can somebody tell me why they brought back the archaic 2.slow
They could of at LEAST made the base engine a non turbo 2.0 5v
Owned one (GLi) for 2 years. Incredible engine and transmission. Nice interior. Suspension is a bit too soft.

excelente auto lo tengo 1 año tienen que probarlo
This Jetta and Chevy Cruze are in their own class since they've gotten so big, it's not fair to compare them with the other normal sized compact cars.

Sooo what happens to the Golf?
This is incorrect. Mk5 rabbit and Jetta were more premium and more German than the mk6 Jetta. Mk6 is cheap and very American.

Drinking Game
Take a shot every time John says *Jetta.*

2.0 SOHC 8V 115hp!?

Coming soon is VW's 2 liter Diesel with a promise 40mpg and a new option to sell it back to VW thanks to its Diesel Gate technology. 😁
BUT LOOKS SEXY THOU ONLY BAD THE REAR SUSPENSION BUT THAN AGAIN IT'S ALL ON THE DRIVER NOT THE CAR
With all the cut backs no wonder why its under $17k
I'd rather get a Cruze

those are pretty SIGNIFICANT downgrades... Even for it's cheaper price.
Even though this isn't as good as it use to be, I'd rather have it over any other American or Asian car. German for life.
Hydrologic steering in 2011? Why would VW cheap out so much? Just make a quality VW and keep it moving. You might have more success with rave reviews!
Looks like it was styled by Kia.
Because it's was designed by a former Kia designer, fool
i'd rather a ford focus
