    ABOUT THIS FILM
    ____________________
    Mother kestrel returns
    The adult female returns with food for her chicks to find a new chick is in the nest and there is chaos as the foundling chick immediately snatches the meal she has caught for her own young from her! Watch this mother's reaction! Instead of becoming aggressive, as you might expect, she seems to circle the new chick as if trying to work out what on earth this is.
    Feeding time
    Then she spends some time trying to get the food back from this hungry chick. Once she has it she continues to carefully break pieces off for her own young, meanwhile the foster chick tears off chunks from the kill and eventually the elder of the adult kestrel's natural chicks piles in and also begins to feed for itself- leaving mother kestrel to feed the youngest one. Incredible!

    I've been watching an american kestral cam this year and i've observed this behavior in those chicks as well (no foundlings, all parent's chicks). At a certain age/size some of them will just grab the whole catch from the mother as she returns to the box to feed them and they run around the box with it trying to feed themselves, the female patiently waits calmly and coolly and eventually regains control of the meal to parcel out to all her chicks equally.

    • @jwalker6325
      @jwalker6325 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That 1 younger, fluffy kestrel seems a bit rejecting of the new older sibling! Lol! The way it immediately goes to mom screaming & looking over at the foster & then when the foster takes the whole meal, it really starts freaking out & screaming in mom's face as if to say "hey! Hey! Heyyyyy!!!!! We don't know that guy!! He doesn't live here!!! What are you gonna do abt this?! Kick him out!! I don't know him! Omg he's got the fooooooood!!! The food!!!!!! I hope you can hear me.mom bc im.screaming as loud as I can + as close to your face as I can possibly get!! I'm HUNGRY & that guy we don't even know is EATING ALL MY FOOOOOOOOD!!! WHY ISNT ANYONE LISTENING TO ME?!?!?!"

    • @jwalker6325
      @jwalker6325 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh wow! I was watching this again bc it was so funny the 1st time, and I just noticed that around 27-29sec into the video, the upset fluffy kestrel actually pecks sharply at mom after the foster gains control of the food & she hasn't gotten it back yet! Wow that's one crabby kid! The other flufferball is actually pretty chill abt the whole thing too, surprisingly, though does seem to be getting a little more.concerned near the end when it becomes more obvious that the meal is almost entirely gone and s/hr hasn't really gotten much of any it at all bt foster kid gulping it down & sometimes taking it straight outta mommy's beak & Mr. I'm-never gonna-stop-screaming-abt-that-guy-we-dont-know getting practically all the pcs that momma tears off & manages to hold on to!

      The orphan chick could easily be hand fed by humans, this is no problem to do. It does take copious amounts of time and dedication to raise though. My interpretation is that the "authorities" use Fuller's nests and he is happy to do so.
