Dressing a Tudor Queen: Historically Accurate 1530s Clothing

  • Learn about clothing fit for a wife of Henry VIII!
    I've loved Tudor history, especially the six wives of Henry VIII, since I was a kid and it has always been a dream of mine to have an historically accurate Tudor gown! A couple years ago, I finally felt that my sewing and research skills were up to the challenge. The outfit consists of a linen smock, a wool and silk satin petticoat, a silk satin kirtle, and a fur-trimmed gown, and is completed with a "gabled hood" (a modern fashion history term for the bonnet, front, paste, and edging that make up this style of headwear).
    There are a lot of misconceptions about Tudor clothing (they didn't wear corsets!) so I hope this sheds some light on the various layers and accessories involved in dressing a Tudor queen like Anne Boleyn or Jane Seymour.

    Fun fact! There was a mini ice age during the Middle Ages into the Tudor era. That’s why it was incredibly important to have heavy, warm fabrics.

      I've always wondered how women could bear all those layers. Climate explains it.

    • @Sadimal
      @Sadimal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +136

      And they wore natural fabrics which were very breathable compared to the synthetic fabrics we use today.

    • @catherinejustcatherine1778
      @catherinejustcatherine1778 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      That makes sense.
      I still overheat in natural fabrics.
      Another channel said that it was colder in Elizabethan times. I imagine that the ice age is what they were referring to.

      @@catherinejustcatherine1778 my understanding is that most of English history post 13-14thC (they weren’t much colder than now) are a few degrees colder than now. But the Tudor period was even more so. Given also that these people (the poor more than the rich) were normally much hungrier than we were especially in winter (anyone who’s been underweight can attest to the intensive cold it brings) I can only imagine how freezing english winters must have felt in their drafty wooden homes.

    I love that you paid such close attention to detail when it came to your fabric choices, facings, hems, closures, etc. The colors all compliment one another beautifully and make up a distinct, cohesive, well planned and expertly executed look in its entirety! I hate when I find a video of "dressing a tudor lady" and it's mismatched pieces where the colors and fabrics clash. It doesn't give an accurate (or visually pleasing) depiction. Thank you for sharing your hard work and skill!

    This entire ensemble is gorgeous! I love the faux fur especially, and I can;t believe how perfect the pattern on the gold fabric is! I wonder - is it common for so much of the back and neck to show? Did they ever wear anything like a fichou (no idea how to spell that) for warmth? Also, what are you wearing for shoes?

      @TheCoutureCourtesan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Having performed on the stage for 17 years when I was younger (and coming from a theater family with a mother who played Catherine of Aragon in "Royal Gambit"), I appreciate attention given to realistic costuming, and this is nothing short of magnificent! Some of the detail I knew already, but most I did not. I can only imagine the time you spent on research and creation of this gown, let alone the cost. My only critiques would be to share a little about how heavy and/or ungainly this gown may have been for you, as well as an estimate of how long it might take to dress the woman at the time. Thank you for sharing your hard work with us, and I'll definitely be looking at more of your videos!

I love reading about the construction of historic gowns but it's so illuminating to have a layer-by-layer look. This is definitely one of my favourite reconstructed tudor gowns that I've seen, it just looks so phenomenally regal! Wonderful job! (Also, I'm delighted you chose to go for a gable hood. It's one of my favourite pieces of historic fashion, and I think you've really conveyed how elegantly they can be designed!)
