  • Horn Silica or 501 is a Biodynamic preparation that Rudolph Steiner introduced in 1924. The preparation is made with finely ground quartz/silica crystals rock into a cow horn. Its buried in Spring on a flower day with a descending moon, and then lifted in Autumn.
501 is created to release the cosmic energies of the earth Spring ‘exhale’ into the plants. This light energy stimulates and orders the plant metabolism.
Silica crystals have a very geometric structure perfect to absorbs and radiates light. What is most important is this deep relation between silica and light. The idea is to take the pure quartz crystals and grind them up as fine as possible. The end should be a fine talcum powder. Silica is mixed into a firm paste with good quality water, the paste is then packed into the cow horns. It is left to settle overnight and in the morning, we pour off any excess water.
Why a cow? If you look at a cow, it is certainly an earthy animal. It is grounded in its posture and it feeds with its head low to the ground. There is a reason too, to use the horns of cows, not bulls. Earth is a female, mothering and fertile being, female have the power to create life, that’s why its important to use horns bearing birthing rings. The cow horn is therefore very connected with life-giving.
We bury the horn in spring because it is when the planet deeply exhales, as an awakening from the winter sleep, in a pit about 30 to 50 centimetres deep in an area on the farm where the soil is fertile, well-aerated and well-drained and where it can get sun all day long.
To use the 501 we need to ‘dynamise’ the solution by stirring the water in order to create a vortex and we have to do it for an hour. In the early morning when the light is at a low angle, it is sprayed on the plants.
501 is applied in spring at the onset of the vines’ leaf development, and in summer to stimulate optimal fruiting. By stimulating photosynthesis it works to increase the vines uptake of nutrients. It is also helpful for: nitrogen fixing; healthier, stronger, more compact and resilient leaf growth; protection from diseases; it improve flavour and nutritional value in fruits and as a consequence in the wine.
