ISAFMobius18 Everyone thinks of sternwheel steamboats as being Mississippi River icons, despite the last operating sternwheel steam towboat operating on the Williamette and Columbia Rivers.
@@oregonrailfan7046 That was my point 4 years ago. This is a towboat, not a Mississippi steamboat. There were paddle wheelers and sternwheelers, all over the world, from the Nile River to the Willamette.
There is no greater cause than that of preserving the rich maritime history of piracy. Educating today's generation in the pirate traditions of eye patches, shoulder parrots and peglegs is heart warming. The pirate lifestyle has never been more than a misunderstood group of adventuresome fellows that just happen to attack honest mariners in order to steal from them. I suppose we should all look beyond our limited vision of socially acceptable activities and accept piracy as form of philanthropy.
Even a "bump" from a 928 TON ship is bad, when the victim weighs in at a mere 48. They're not reveling in it because they poured years & hundreds of thousands of dollars into restoring that beautiful ship (focal point of this year's Portland Pirate Festival, btw - thus the "Halloween costumes"), only to have her nearly sunk on her maiden voyage because, quite simply, the engineer didn't have the "Portland" under control. Her seams were popped, she took on 100s of gals of water. This was B.A.D.
Stern wheelers are notoriously difficult to maneuver compared to screwed ships/boats and sidewheelers. The rudder has no authority without velocity on a stern wheeler as there is no flow from a screw to act on it. And unlike a sidewheeler that can declutch or reverse gear each paddle it only has the one wide one at the stern. Advantages were draft and cargo capacity as the wheel gear isn't in the middle of the boat/ship.
A combination of errors. I myself am a steamboat enthusiast, despite it being at fault. A lot of the commenters are slamming the captain, the captain can not physically stop the boat. If the captain wants it to stop, he has to ring a bell, which then sends a signal to the engine room at the back, where the chief engineer then stops the steam flow to the engines, again not an immediate stop. Paddle wheelers are slow in stopping anyhow, not to mention the fact the funnel and rear plank to stop splashing off the paddlwheel block his sight in reversing, their should be a pilot on the stern assisting in the reverse move. As for a lawsuit, the group that owns her is a volunteer group in itself, so I doubt the lawsuit would be that lucrative. I am very sorry to see that Royaliste is now for sale, as tall ships, clipper ships, and schooners are nearly as rare as authentic steam boats, sadly due to this incident, but thankfully she did not sink, hopefully the future will brighten for Royaliste, but happily there was not a lawsuit that ended with Royaliste and Portland being inoperative, 2 maritime treasures. I hope the profanity queen learned that her screaming definitely helped slow the crash down......
Steamboat captains fault. He hit another boat that was moored and didn't seem to have any problem shifting from reverse to forward after the incedent. Before you say the sailboat wasn't moored take a look at the frames around 1:16 to 1:23. You can see the 'pirate' boat is tied off and, as the camera pans round stern to bow, if you look to the left of the picture you can see the gangway is lowered onto the dock.
It’s not a 20-footer with outboards. It’s a big-ass boat running (if I understand correctly) steam. It doesn’t turn (or reverse/forward) on a dime. It’s fast to change thrust, but miscommunication will kill any hope of that.
I mean, honestly. These "drunken yuppy scallywags" REBUILT A SHIP. What have you done today that is so much more impressive that you are incapable of respecting how much work, skill, dedication, and art was required of these people to restore the Royaliste?
Guaranteed that lady with the hat yelling what the hell asked to speak to the boats manager... Whoever is steering the paddle boat might need a career change.
The Captain is taken off the sternwheeler in handcuffs by the Coast Guard for causing this wreck screaming: "You can't do this to me, I'M CAPTAAAAAAIN!!" 😡🤬
Respons time on these vessels is pretty slow sometimes you hit stuff. I was a deckhand on the Mississippi Queen 1979 on the three rivers Mississippi, Ohio, and Missouri. We hit stuff relatively often Lol !
Good, good. Then maybe the owners of the Royalist won't lose their ship due to this incident. It would be a shame if their ship can't be repaired because the insurance companies will only pay for the value of the ship, rather than paying whatever it takes to repair the Royalist. Seems like maybe something should be done by those responsible to make sure the Royalist is made whole again, in case the insurance won't, which is entirely possible. Just saying.
Are you joking? The work they did to restore the ship was nothing short of pure artistry and craftsmanship, and you can be sure that they were not sailing inebriated. Learn to look past your limited vision of socially acceptable activities, and try to recognize that not only were the sternwheeler's pilot's actions careless, they were also incredibly dangerous. A crew member was below decks on the pirate ship. Thank God that individual was not hurt.
LoL, that was a bump. A Crash would have done real damage, that just nudged the moored ship off the paddle wheel support brace. Piss poor navigation skills, but it could have been considerably worse.
someone needs to sink that fake wanna be pirate ship anyway. that thing is a joke, the railings and all the woodwork look like something a highschooler would do in his first year of woodshop. it was garabge

Why aren't the "pirates" reveling in this? Seems to me that they would enjoy such adventure on the high seas. Maybe the sternwheeler was just doing a preemptive strike against those drunken yuppy scallywags. That captain made a mistake but he's no idiot. The real idiots are the adults dressed in halloween costumes standing on an old boat pretending it's a pirate ship.
That's one way to deal with pirates!!
Road rage on the open seas! :)
lol back in reverse again the end
"That's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen..."
You'd think they'd have someone with a walkie talkie at the stern to direct the pilot.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Mississippi Edition
I think that's the Columbia River.

The very end tehdriver is thinking
"that didnt go so well..lets try it again!"
"Go home Captain, you're drunk!" XD
Based on how the flags are flying, wind was pushing the stern wheeler AWAY from the fake pirate ship.

This was clearly a parallel docking accident...the Stern wheeler is trying to dock and the pirate vessel shares the same area nearby.
So sorry this happened after all the work you've been doing! Is it still afloat?

the captain is at fault
Paddles can actually stop faster, so much so they could make the same timetables as a propeller ship with higher cruising speed.
Con todo el gran buque reaccionó bien a la reversa
Karen types screaming "omg wth" will help the situation
pirates please no match for the power of my steam paddler
Got the Pilot from the Columbia , did they?

That's whatcha call the wrong place at the wrong time period.
an over-forty victim of fate
Wind would be the cause and you know nothing of how this steamer works to shift forward to reverse, it's not a perfect world.
If you had a working cannon, a warning shot would have gotten their attention.
