How To Wire a Turn Signal Flasher Relay Directional Blinker on a Car / Truck / ATV / Motorcycle

  • In this video, I show you how I would wire an automotive flasher relay, (which is also called a turn signal, directional, and blinker circuit) for a car, truck, motorcycle, ATV, dirt bike, side by side, go cart, or whatever kind of vehicle needs a left and right turn signal. There are many ways to wire automotive style turn signals, but I prefer to wire them using two relays, because I feel like it is a safest method of wiring the signal lights. Below is a list of the relays, the turn signal flasher, fuses, the 1157 bulbs and sockets, and the 3 way toggle switch I used to make the entire circuit work properly.
Items used in the signal light wiring diagram (You may not need to buy in these quantities, but I did.)

Basically the first switch you can enable the hazard lights or enable the turn signal, the second then just is the turn signal control. It is how I did it because I didn't mind a second switch

It’s a very simple way to make it work, and extremely easy to diagnose if it ever fails. These parts are also available at every part store across the country, and dirt cheap. That’s a win! Good luck with the build!

Thanks for all your videos they are extremely helpful, especially this one as I’m currently trying to replace all my bulbs with LED’s on my Grand Wagoneer jeep.
What I found is an LED flasher with a ground flashes faster than one without the problem I’m having is that even though I replaced my flashers the rear 1156 led bulbs for running lights at night will not work. The led 1157 for brakes work fine and so do the 1156 for backup lights and turn signals but not the side marker lights. I’ve checked the grounds and they all seem to work. It would be great to see a video on how 1156 and 1157 led bulb works different and the difference between a grounded led flasher and a non one with turn signals, brakes, backup lights and side marker lights - thanks 👍🏼

I am not doing the exact application but this helped me get a basic idea how the signal system works. I am installing aftermarket additional brake light (with sequential turn signal and strobe brake light) and running light/turn signal for my motorcycle.
Would I need to add fused to the cables I connect to the existing set up?

I like my watches like I like my coffee - Extra large. Seriously though, it’s the cheapest Apple Watch with a massive protective watch band because I destroy everything I touch. The first day I wore it I put a giant scratch across the face, wearing it working on cars like a dummy. I then found the cheapest + most protective case I could find online and hit “buy it now”. Here I am 1 year later and I haven’t broke it yet!

Awesome! Check out my other turn signal videos too. I have about 3 different methods of doing this. One method doesn’t need relays, but needs LED bulbs. Another method has a cool switch that also has some other cool features. Check out the link in the top pinned comment above, and you’ll see them all there.

I bought everything in this video not realizing that I need something to put the fuses in. I don't know what they are called lolol 😂 i rewatched the video but I don't believe you mentioned what the fuses go into. I bought the 272 piece fuse package but they are all just different fuses only. Thanks a lot for this informative video.👍

Haha - sorry about that - you will want “fuse holders”. Here is a link to the ones I used, but there are many options. Thanks for watching and good luck with your project!

Man you keep making a video like this you definitely got me to subscribe. I had an idea on how to do it but I knew there were small things that I was missing and this pretty much topped it off for me. This video is 150% understandable this is like breaking it down for dummies. Definitely is going to help me out because I do not want to pay to run new headlights, blinkers, brake lights, ect. Another idea you may be able to mention is how to run new headlights with high beams I think that would be an interesting topic and maybe throwing the brake lights in there with it to where they have the standard brake lights without you pressing on it then you know they get brighter whenever you hit the brakes just a thought would be video to watch.
