    Had 1 of these engines in a bravo hgt 2.0 5 cylinder was the only 2.0 that was affordable to insure back in the day had a lovely sound to it aswell, sold it to my friend who then took it to a indicated 141mph. @cylturbskie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably 139mph if it showed 141mph. But yes 5 cylinders are the perfect unicorn engine, turbo or na, they ooze character and uniqueness. Personally i think the 2.0 sound better than the higher capacity 5 cylinder engines because of the smaller cylinder bores and with that comes the cheaper 2 litre road tax bracket. Tho going turbo 5 cyl i could NEVER go non turbo. Simply because the sound is all the more intoxicating xD

    They forgot about the IC, the std one cant cope with that boost, you get over 60deg C into the plenum. Apart from ca 25deg air and no pinking, you’d get 10-15hp more, with a front center mounted intercooler.
    Then, that exhaust manifold will crack, its shit. Try get a new or repaired OEM iron, and port-match it (they’re s little off on cyl 4 & 5 usually).
    There will be a little torque steer, so do get a lower subframe brace, OMP for Alfa 155 on ebay. Will reduce it 95%

    • @cylturbskie

      i have the pro alloy big fmic on mine. unfortunately causing the car to run abit hotter at idle and on boost (am heavily modded) but ill be putting the 40mm aluminium radiator on and deleting the ac condenser and putting a fresh thermostat on mine in a month or two.

    • @pereldh5741
      @pereldh5741 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cylturbskie That sounds like a different issue, the FMIC shouldn't cause any heat issues. Mine didn't (but then I was only at 340bhp, not 5-600 as some others). If it runs hot on idle I suspect the fuelling is thin side, or the radiator is shot.. The new one will tell that, I suppose. Good luck! Fantastic cars these.

    Bye!
    Beautiful review, and beautiful specimen! .. 👍🏻
    I would like to add and talk about a detail that has not been mentioned in the video review at all, that is the traction, as it is considered (the 20V Turbo) one of the best front traction in the world, due to some technical details not just, that is :
    THE FRAME: "Type 2", this is the evolution of that of the Lancia Delta, more rigid and robust, as well as the body.
    THE TRANSMISSION: A sophisticated (especially for the 90's era) electronically controlled transmission through turbocharging management (Garrett TB28) invented by Fiat / Bosch, on the first two "EBL" (Electtronic Boost Limiter) gears, of this what few are aware of, even if it has been mentioned several times by various Italian magazines such as: Auto del 1997, Quattroruote 1999, and also by international magazines, as well as a mechanical self-locking device called (ViscoDrive).
    I think it is right to say a few words about the sophisticated electronic control of the transmission on the traction, and on its operation.
    There are 2 sensors / switches inside the gearbox, which are connected to a first satellite control unit, this is connected to the mother control unit (Bosch Motronic 1.1.2) which in turn is connected to a second satellite control unit which is connected to an electronic valve called "Pierburg" which always in turn controls the WestGate valve of the Turbo, opening and closing it according to the wheel spin by means of the ABS sensors.
    The beauty of this sophisticated electronic system lies in the fact that it does not INTERRUPT the wheel spin, like a common "ETC" (Electtronic Traction Control), where it cuts the current to the engine, making you feel the classic serration and kickback, but REDUCES the wheel spin. of the wheels, precisely decreasing the supercharging pressure, so as to maintain a fluidity and pleasure of driving while driving, without losing performance.
    The system automatically excludes itself once the third gear has been engaged, included onwards, to reactivate automatically once returned to 2nd and 1st gear respectively.
    The control system, if necessary, can be excluded with special "Computer Examiner", and not by the Driver in the passenger compartment.
    The beauty of this sophisticated system lies in the fact that if you want to elaborate the Coupé, even in an extreme way, to increase power and torque, and therefore performance in general, with more extreme trim, etc .... With this electronic system (with ECU reprogramming) you can choose the boost pressure according to the gear engaged so as to always have a smooth and pleasant drive, without excessive skidding and loss of control of the car!
    ES: If original, the pressure expressed by the Turbo is: 1st gear 0.8Bar, 2nd gear 1.0Bar, from 3rd gear included 1.2Bar (therefore the maximum boost pressure).
    By carrying out the processing you can do:
    E.g. 1st gear 1.0Bar, 2nd gear 1.2, Bar, 3rd gear included onwards 1.5 / 1.8 / 2.2, and beyond, so as to never have the classic explosion of power with relative wheel spin in the first 2 gears, which takes away the pleasure of driving.
    A truly brilliant and unique system in the 90s sports!
    We remind you that the "normal" Fiat Coupé 20V Turbo and special editions (Limited Edition, [numbered and certified] Plus Edition, and MY99 'Edition) is the only 90' front-wheel drive sports car to have a controlled transmission and mixed management, (Electronics + Mechanics), the latter cohesive in unison, in the name of mimesis, although these are not physically connected to each other in a single piece, like a classic "VDC."
    In practice, the mechanical self-locking (ViscoDrive) acts as a "TC" (Torque transfer) and the "EBL" (Electtronic Boost Limiter) electronics as a skid control.
    SORRY IF IT'S LITTLE !!!!!
    *******
    P.s: Some models (more than a few) of original "Limited Edition", new, and of a single owner, rolled on the test bench, have all registered powers of over 230hp, in spite of the 220 declared by Fiat.
    This indisputably explains the greater performance in terms of maximum speed and acceleration scored by the various magazines, in spite of the "normal" 5-speed versions, that is: (252.23 Km / h, LE, against 248Km / h Normal .), and acceleration, (6.1 / 3 Sec.LE, against 6.5 Sec.Normal) all electronically "limited" in the first 2 steps, as stated above.
    ******
    Bye!

In theory and practice it works but the downside you add water droplets into your cylinders which in turns scraps your manifold and whole exhaust as a result of corrosion.

    The turbo shaft play should NOT be checked like that, but from compressor to turbine and viceversa, along the shaft;
    Turbo hybrid like that which you described is a KILLER of engine, because generate huge backpressure, usually exhaust mainfold pressure will be HIGHER than boost in intake mainfold. That tb turbocharger is ALREADY a factory hybrid, so she have anyway pretty much a big compressor wheel and small turbine. If you would install even BIGGER COMPRESSOR WHEEL keeping same turbine wheel, is like you would try to inhale on mouth and exhale at same flow in same amount of time on your nose. Which is IMPOSSIBLE. Not to memntion the waaaay greater temperature on exhaust which makes gasses to exoand even more.

      @Lloyde Turner it was the way he said it, it implied they operate that fast usually...rather than when on test. I think the F1 cars can spin at 200,000rpm but I'm not sure ordinary cars go much past 70 or so

    This is one of my favorite cars, so sad to see such a cool design outside and such a poor design for its core; I mean, cast iron manifold? Come on... (Still managed to make 252 kph though)

    • @skylinefever
      @skylinefever 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most factory turbo cars have iron manifolds, even the most famous ones. The iron manifolds held the heat of the exhaust gas better, which reduces the underhood temperatures. Had cars like the Nissan 300ZXTT not had iron manifolds, the problem of underhood temperatures would have gone from bad to even worse. Those cars are difficult enough as is.

    Even my loved manufacturer, Volvo, is no longer what is was.
    Since Ford bought Volvo in 1999, all successive Volvo's were really a Ford.
    A 2009 Volvo V70 is really a Ford Mondeo on false plates.
    I stick with my V70T2/2007 and my S60T2/2005 until a reasonable replacement can be found.
    I do not pay Volvo prices and receive a Ford!
