      Just make one out of wood. All you need is a wood plank and a knife. Maybe also sandpaper just to make the sword smooth.

    Water bottles are very useful too. At least filled up ones. Same thing as pool noddles, works on edge alignment.

      Exactly, I've tried to cut some with some swords I poorly sharpened, not as easy as it looks, it requires a sharp blade, good technique and a lot of upper, core and full body strength.

    Water bottles are actually good to check edge alignment, all you have to do is pick up the pieces and see if the cuts are clean or jagged. The only thing holding these people back is their inability to reach their own toes.

    When i was in starbucks when i was 10? Or 11, i got tired if standing, and i took a waterbottle, i was angry at this time, so when i was so angry, i uh broke the water bottle from the bottom without doing anything, ( i was tired to btw )
    I got in trouble by my mom and i got another water, went home and had a 2 hour lecture of not breaking water bottles

    It's actually the same thing with water bottles, if you're edge alignment is off it will explode and bounce, but if it is good then the bottle will be cut cleanly in half and the bottom half won't even move much

    I have a question; so I’m trying to convince my parents to get me a katana. I’m sure I’ll get one at some point, hopefully soon. If I get one, it’d be a dull replica, but I still want to cut through stuff like pool noodles.     Water bottles are also great at testing edge alignment. If you cut it and it just explodes with a really jagged cut edge, it shows poor edge alignment. Cut it well and the bottle should remain standing on the post and the cut top shouldn't fly more than a meter from the post.

      Get good edge alignment and the cut part should fly no more than a meter away.

    Paper is another good test of edge alignment because if you don’t have good edge alignment it will just tear, but if you can consistently cut it cleanly you have good edge alignment. Might be cheaper than pool noodles also.

    I can't believe I didn't think of this, I bought a 60 count of 6' tall bamboo poles to train with for my first katana recently and while I did manage a clean cut after a few failed attempts I seriously sullied my blade on just the first pole. If you're seeking solely to hack and slash and leaning less towards sword maintenance (which is quite difficult as it turns out) this is a much better way for prolonging your keepsakes original durability while giving you the added bonus of preserving the value of your blade as well as saving yourself the time of maintenance. Thanks for sharing :)

    Do iaido if you want learn how to use a katana, if you want to cut stuff look into battodo. If you want to duel do kendo, If you want a mix of everything do kenjutsu. If there is nothing near you find an online class. Don’t play with your anime sword in your backyard and call your self a swordsman, become one.

    to be fair I prefer a corpse or ballistic dummy because it's actually real and I don't contemplate myself thinking when am I ever going to be cutting a pool noodle or a rolled-up mat for combat or self-defense

    Paper is the best. If you can't cut through it at all your as weak as a flea, and even though it's easy it showcases edge alignment well. While the sword will go straight through either way, you can easily tell good from bad edge alignment. Not to mention cheaper than pool noodles.

    I like using a claymore and I use pool noodles all the time it helps and if I need to work a vertical swing I use a pumpkin and try to cut it into two equal peaces. I think I would use the same logic with one of your katanas as well but if I shouldn't let me know.

    If this guy knew what he was talking about he would know that a water bottle is best for testing your edge alignment. It bounces if your edge alignment was off by even a quarter of a degree. If you can consistently cut a water bottle then you are good at holding a sword.
