    I can personally attest to raising goats and cattle together works well as the goats prefer leafy greens like weeds that cattle often won't eat, and that allows the grass that the cattle do eat to grow better cause they aren't shaded out by weeds.

      However if goats do decide to munch some grass, they rip out the roots, too, meaning the grass won't grow back for the lawn-mower cows

    I like how you guys still reply to comments despite hitting the one million subscribers mark.
    Most channels lose that sense of "direct connection" since the community gets so large it turns into a swarm of strangers, and there are so many comments that even if the creator comments, it gets buried.
    I wonder if there's some sort of ecological metaphor in there somewhere? Like in your video about the relationship between scarcity and diversity both in economics and ecology?

      I might have one: if there are too many species or biodiversity some might get buried into certain classes. And eventually just a large group where it takes longer to find a certain species from a category.

  • @Suedocode

    My understanding from this is that biodiversity makes a much stronger ecosystem, but it does _not_ help a singular product. For instance, if you're trying to grow apples, having diverse trees among your apple grove won't make the apple trees also flourish more than they would as a grove of pure apple trees. A diverse set of insects will pollinate better (as mentioned), but that makes each apple tree grow more fruit rather than growing more apple trees. *So biodiversity is not better for any one species because they are still competing with each other.* They are just coexisting with other species who compete for other things.

    Wouldn't more timber for sell mean less cost per timber which would reduce the total cost, not just add up?
    I don't know much about economics so kinda help me here...

    • @EagleDarkX
      @EagleDarkX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, technically, but the total income would still rise, because the rate a piece of lumber would drop by would be compensated by the fact that you have more wood.
      Like how selling one marble for $2,- gets you less than selling two for $1,50 each.

    • @TraceurRijeka
      @TraceurRijeka 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I get that. But since we don't know the decrease of price I can make a statement as follows:
      1) You have 1000 cubic meters of timber and you sell each for 2000$. For that deal you'll end up with 2,000,000$.
      2) You have 1350 (35% increase) cubic meters of timber and you sell each for 1450$ (27.5% decrease). You now ended up with "only" 1,957,500$.
      Either that or you'll be in a surplus

    • @dr.sbrule5817
      @dr.sbrule5817 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I assume the decrease in the value of the wood would be pretty small relative to the % increase in amount of wood. Id be very surprised if selling more wood would make you less money... Imagine a trade deal where you offered more and got offered less in return, it just doesn't happen.

    • @EagleDarkX
      @EagleDarkX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Prince McKok They would never let you pay less for more. Besides, keep in mind that the price isn't just decided by what you produce, but also what the rest of the world produces. If the rest of the world produces more, and you don't, your prices will drop as well. You need to keep up, that's competition. If you were the only one to make more wood, the prices wouldn't vary much (unless you have a monopoly, but then you decide the prices yourself anyway.)

    • @TraceurRijeka
      @TraceurRijeka 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Well okay; I didn't actually think through my last reply. Timber/$ will always be proportional to price/total revenue.

    If the businesses would profit from growing diverse amount of trees: it would already be done.
    It is well known that farms cooperate with bee farms for strategic placement of these mildly complementary products.

    • @murrayvonmises
      @murrayvonmises 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrickmen11
      Not everywhere, some tree farms rely on private property where it is necessary to replant and regrow the trees(Canada etc.).
      Others buy licenses to cut down trees, Amazona.
      When the property is not owned there is no incentive to replant.
      As to this recent study, it is well known that biodiversity is better for eco-systems.
      The issue with planting lots of different trees on farms is how they fit in these cars and the quality of the wood. Wood cutter use blades and vehicles for a specific size, and trees are rarely left to fully grow before cut.
      If you would have to mix all these different sorts of trees into a vehicle it would potentially fill up cart fast as well cause issues with the cutting of them. - and one more thing, manufactures often only want 1 sort of tree, and therefor this would lead to nothing but more obstacles for the vehicles cutting down these trees.
      If you think these ideas are so smart how come you don't engage in the market.
      You could sell trees 5% cheaper and make more 30% profits according to his paper -- which is so low iq and pathetic as I've proven above, well at least the conclusion formulated in this movie.

    An interesting thought is whether or not logging companies care to lose the specialization of cutting down a certain kind of tree. Sure, the total value of the forest is greater with biodiversity, but perhaps it's more economical for the company if there were only one kind of tree and therefore only one method to cut down that kind of tree. I, of course, think biodiversity is great, but it's always fun to look from different perspectives.

    Sleight of hand in the video.
    It goes from talking about conservation to biodiversity. It makes an excellent economic argument for biodiversity, but this argument does not translate into conservation. All it does is say that there is a real monetary benefit for businesses to plant different kinds of trees and keep their resources diverse. This is not an argument for conservation, which requires legal limits.

    Buen video, si esto aplica para hongos, habría que ver que no sea mayor las esporas que emanan que el polen de las plantas, para evitar colapsos de biomas, en el pasado de la tierra cuando no había abundantes árboles y plantas, debieron los hongos hacer ese trabajo pero no me extrañaría que colapsara el ecosistema, a futuro usar esa técnica de hongos pero modificados genética mente para terraformar, sería cruel usarlos para luego de cumplir su trabajo mueran colapsando solos para luego poner árboles en control de la naturaleza y los biomas en otros planetas rocosos.

      The deathless face of the unborn mind. Not necessarily, certain forms of conservation are very wasteful of time/resources. Pandas, for example, are pretty useless for their ecosystems but we dump hundreds of millions into helping them. Where as bees in North America are facing massive threats and relatively little goes to helping them.

    I want to care about bee life but as someone with sekosphobia the phobia of bees wasps and hornets I find it really hard to not enjoy news about lower bee populations
    My phobia is dreadful it ruins summer late spring and early autumn (no wonder i like October so much) it's so bad I can barely go outside by myself in summer unless I'm wearing long sleeves and trousers-which is so hot. I often mistake hover flys as wasps in my panic as well I'll also add twenty minutes on to a walk just because I saw a few bees in a particular location the day before. All the running and quick get ups from tables burns a lot of calories so it's not all a loss.

    Not promoting monocultures, but in no way is a bio-diverse crop more economical from a processing perspective than a monoculture, simple practices such as cutting and tailoring nutrients and pesticides are made a lot harder when the crop is diverse.

    • @fredfredrickson482
      @fredfredrickson482 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      any change you try to make to 'make the world a better place' will have unforeseen consequences. Here's an example - a bat's main food source is mosquitoes. The population of bats would decrease, sending ripples throughout the food web.

    • @karatesoccerbaseball
      @karatesoccerbaseball 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HistoricaHungarica Yep. Less transfer of disease is a positive for humans. I say the ends would justify the means. Unless mosquitoes, the Bubonic Plague, and the Great Potato Famine is Mother Nature's way of controlling the human population.

    • @HistoricaHungarica
      @HistoricaHungarica 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      karatesoccerbaseball So naive thoughts.
      BTW the "less transfer of disease" is actually false. As far as i can remember only 0.1% of the known diseases that can effect the human race are transferred via mosquitoes. Granted, most of those are very gruesome or irritating but if you want to eliminate the biggest threat... then you must kill all humans. Those pests carry most of the lethal or viral shit mankind knows.

  • @Lapantouflemagic0
    @Lapantouflemagic0 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    that's a question i was wondering about for a while, but your answer clearly are not really about biodiversity in itself. monoculture is bad, abusing pesticides is bad, no one does that but filtering rivers would be bad, i guess.
    what i take from that is that as long as the environment is kind of healthy (not too much pollution and not to much pesticides) we could level the entire amazon rainforest and plant various crops that are not necessarily from the area and everything would be just fine. which i'm pretty sure is not your point.
    so that doesn't answer my question : why would i care about this or that obscure endangered specie ?

    i suspect the economics is a bit more complicated than whats presented here, but its true diversity does allow one to hedge there bets. a very big factor in farming. if everyone grows only a few crops and there is a prob all the eggs in the basket smash and we have nothing for lunch
