Animation may generally be considered a medium for children but we all know, hopefully, that those days are long behind us. There are plenty of adult appropriate animated shows out there and they embrace the fact that they can get away with so much more. Many of these shows have violence, suggestive content or more, substance usage, racism and so much more crude humor that kids should just be nowhere near it. There’s also the case of Spongebob Squarepants, which actually had a scientific paper published against it illustrating how damaging the show can be for a young child’s mind. Yikes! Some shows aren’t that bad and likely had a whole generation growing up with them, such as The Simpsons and Family Guy. Both have some pretty mature subject matter in them, with the latter being edgier in its content, but both are lighter than some of the other animated shows on this list. For example, South Park. It doesn’t get much more mature than this show and it features children as the main characters! Archer and BoJack Horseman have plenty of adult content and get away with it thanks to their subscription based platforms. Rick and Morty, one of the most popular new animated shows on right now, definitely has some not safe for kids moments. Robot Chicken, co-created by Seth Green, is definitely reaches for the mature rating, despite it’s “dolled” up main cast. American Dad isn’t quite as edgy as Family Guy but a show like Metalocalypse can definitely be considered one of the most adult shows on this list. It’s pretty freaking violent, despite it’s funny tone.

99% percent of the shows on this list aren’t even rated for kids parents that even considered allowing their kids to watch it and gave way for this to be an idea must be illiterate because the beginning of these shows provide to tv rating, not to mention some of these such as family guy, American dad, and robot chicken are aired after children are supposed to be put to sleep by parents which is approximately after 11pm every night

Also the non-humans in Bojack Horseman aren't humanoids with animal heads, Egyptian gods style, they're completely animal. Just, y'know, humanoid. Anthro. Do the video editors and narrators of Screen Rant not communicate? Do the narrators have no knowledge of what they talk about beyond what the script writers give them? What about adventure time? Its one of my favourite shows, and it definitely has some scenes not suitable for children

Diva Lady The Simpsons and especially Spongebob are family shows, that’s why they both air in the daytime. Plus both shows have merchandise, toys and games marketed towards children and Spongebob airs on a kids network. The Simpsons even had shorts played before Family movies. This guy should of replace Spongebob with Ren and Stimpy and The Simpsons with Futurama.

I think spongebob was bad for American children cause I'm Australian and the only kids show I watched (not including Pre-school type shows) was spongebob and i have a good attention span, im good at puzzles and I actually believe that was because it is fast paced I mean with so much going on in 30 minutes you'd have to concentrate hard plus it would take an abstract mind just to get the storylines let alone the humour

I thought family guy was a kid-friendly show. My eight year old son started watching and I watched from afar as well. After watching a scarce amount I realized my mistake. I heard all the cursing and drinking aspect. That immediately turned me on. In that specific episode there was jokes and scenes on sex. I stunned my eight year old’s mental practice greatly irresponsibly. He was innocent-minded and did not think too much of it. Over the course of 4 years I was still left to worry I ruined my son’s innocent mind. Now he is twelve and mentioned it to me. I felt terrible and I type this for you not to make the same mistakes I did. We now monitor whatever he watches for his benefit. My husband I have discussed thirteen would be the age we would stop and leave him for his own responsibility of what he watches. Like any parent we will still keep a close eye on what he watches. Keep your kids safe.
