It is perhaps the indoctrination of the Western culture that ‘the dog is a man’s best friend’. Also, the theory that dogs are very dependent on human affection is a myth, again aided by culture and custom to develop this unnatural behavior. Remember our life is structured and bounded by the Shari‘ah i.e., the Noble Qur’ān and the beautiful example of the Prophet salallahu ῾alayhi wasallam. Consider the following narrations of the Prophet salallahu ῾alayhi wasallam:
• Sayyidunā Abū Talha radiallahu anhu reports that The Prophet of Allah salallahu ῾alayhi wasallam said, “Angels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or an animate picture.” - Sahīh Bukhārī, hadīth no. 2986

and what He does not will does not take place.
اَشْہَدُ اَنَّ اللهَ عَلٰی کُلِّ شَیْءٍ قَدِیْر
Ashhadu Annallaaha A'laa Kulli Shay-In Qadeer
I bear witness that, verily, Allah, has power over all things:
وَ اَنَّ اللهَ قَدْ اَحَاطَ بِکُلِّ شَیْءٍ عِلْمًا
Wa Annallaaha Qad Ah'aat'a Bikulli Shay-In Ilmaa
and, verily, Allah encompasses every thing in (His) knowledge,
اَللّٰہُمَّ اِنِّیْ اَعُوْذُ بِکَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِیْ
Allaahumma Innee A-O'od'u Bika Min Sharri Nafsee
O my Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil inside me
وَ مِنْ شَرِّ کُلِّ دَابَّۃٍ
Wa Min Sharri Kulli Daabbatin
and from the evil of every creature
َنْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاسِیَتِہَا
ا Anta Aakhid'um Binaas'iyatihaa
whom You seizes with its forelock.
اِنَّ رَبِّ عَلٰی صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِیْمٍ.
Inna Rabbee A'laa S'iraat'im Mustaqeem
Verily my lord is on the right path]

They ˹instead˺ followed the magic promoted by the devils during the reign of Solomon. Never did Solomon disbelieve, rather the devils disbelieved. They taught magic to the people, along with what had been revealed to the two angels, Hârût and Mârût, in Babylon.1 The two angels never taught anyone without saying, “We are only a test ˹for you˺, so do not abandon ˹your˺ faith.” Yet people learned ˹magic˺ that caused a rift ˹even˺ between husband and wife; although their magic could not harm anyone except by Allah’s Will. They learned what harmed them and did not benefit them-although they already knew that whoever buys into magic would have no share in the Hereafter. Miserable indeed was the price for which they sold their souls, if only they knew!

This “looking” may or may not involve jealousy, and can occur unintentionally. A person could even inflict harm upon himself.
