Hi! I just came across your channel when searching for north east texas homesteading. I saw you have rabbits -- do you do anything in the summer to prevent heat stroke or do they do fine?? We live in Montana now with rabbits and we are praying about moving to Texas...I was worried it would be too hot for them.
If you have them in a sunny location in the Texas summer, even if they are covered, they will most likely struggle, a lot. That's why many people around here resort to water misters and/or fans. We don't use those, though. We've had wonderful success keeping our rabbit cages under trees to protect them, especially from about 11am to 6pm in the summer. The trees not only provide shade, but they create a cooling micro-climate by the transpiration by the leaves (tree leaves open little pores on their undersides to release water from time to time - that's why crepe myrtles sometimes spit at you when you walk under them). Admittedly, the rabbits still need to be under a tree that has a good breeze, as stagnant air heats up pretty quickly. If it's not possible to locate them under trees in a breezy area, the rabbits will likely need to be sprayed with water a few times a day, or you can put in a wet burlap sack or a frozen water bottle a couple of times a day with them to let them lie on/against. Putting a ceramic tile in their cage is also supposed to help them cool down as long as it remains in the shade. Hope this helps!
@@homesteadingatkookergehoft8131 thank you so much! That helps tremendously. I read that about the trees shade and natural way of cooling rabbits, glad to know it's worked so well for you! I will keep that in mind if we wind up coming down your way! Thanks again!
Great updates. Everything is moving right along!

I would also add that if you bring them from Montana to Texas, they might struggle the first summer as they acclimate.
