I have been kicking around a roaster Coffee shop for over a year and the wheels keep spinning. Look forward to watching you succeed ( I believe)!!!☕
Haha heck I was thinking the same thing too. Had a conversation awhile back with a roaster that watched my videos, got inspired, and is now crushing it. I thought what the heck am I doing. Just get in the arena and roll! It’s just fear holding me back!
I’m very excited to watch your upcoming series. I’m in the very beginning stages of wanting to do something similar. My wife & I purchased a small roaster earlier this year, and we hope to have a small shop someday. Love your vision! The media part sounds amazing!
Thanks so much buddy! Ya I’m looking forward to it! I think it’s going to be a fun and informative little series. What type of roaster did you guys get?
That sounds very exciting! I'd love to see how you choose things (roaster, green beans, interior design, menu in café, dishes especialy mugs, etc...) based on your vision, concept and philosophy!! Wish you all the best ^^
Thanks so much!! Ya that is my goal with the series. I want to try to show as much of that as possible. I honestly think it could help anyone starting out and boost there confidence. Thanks for watching!!
This is awesome! I’m glad to see your making it happen. Can’t wait to tag along. I’m trying to get my home roasting business going currently so following you will be invaluable.
Heck yes!! Home roasting is where all the long time consuming hours of education come in. Can’t rush it and just have to turn batch after batch of beans. Hope you are enjoying the journey and don’t hesitate to reach out my friend!
Thanks dude! Heck let’s get these shops going! If there is anything I can help with don’t hesitate to reach out! I’m about to learn a bunch of “what not to dos” so I can pass that along! Haha
Love your channel, been following for a bit! Love to see you constantly enhancing your content and growth. I do have one question for ya; how do you recommend sourcing greens for a smaller roaster? I know what the "optimal and fairest" ways to do it, but that generally requires a bit of capital to make it work. Currently, I use the obvious third parties that some may be familiar with, one being Sweet Maria's. This gets a little pricey when I only sell to a local café and online. Keep up the great work, Rob!
Thanks so much for the kind words Chris and I truly appreciate you watching my videos. Honestly IG is a good place to meet producers and some are starting to sell smaller quantities. That’s a tough one though depending on how much you roast. Was is you current output a week or month?
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee Thanks for the reply, Rob! As of now, my current weekly output is 10-12 lbs a week. This is without substantial marketing ect. I would be interested in buying much more than my current output though. I'll have to take a look at IG! Thanks for the tip!
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee they definitely have a ton of resources invested in that place. The thing I was most impressed about was their lighting. It’s so well lit yet dim enough in the seating areas.
That’s so cool! Ya Starbucks from the beginning has done a great job creating an atmosphere when you walk into their cafes. That one looks like a coffee museum though! Haha
That's a helluva plan for 2022. Very admirable. I love how you're working TH-cam into the cafe and doing it all as a packaged business plan for the future. Sounds like you're organizing it all in a smart way to make it happen-lots of reverse engineering.
Thanks Ryan!! Ya, I think the media side is going to be my differentiator. There is very good coffee everywhere so I have been pondering how to separate myself from all the other amazing shops. I think this is one way for sure. Truly appreciate you watching and tuning in! My “idea of success” may be different next year after this! Haha
I 100% thought about your definition changing while I was watching your video. I can only imagine how much personal growth you're going to experience during this process. I'm excited for you and even a little envious of it all. It sounds like it's going to be awesome.
I'm a business coach and thinking of starting a roasting business, which is how I found you. Watching this vid I can tell you that you are on the right track. Get your vision and mindset sorted first, everything else will flow from that. If I can help let me know! Oh and I'm in LA as well, odd coincidence.
pre pandamic we had the mind set of opening a cafe/roaaster and gym focusing on powerlifting and strongman. When covid hit we pressed pause, this year when we were ready to pull the trigger we honestly couldn't afford or account to hire with wages going as high as $15-18hr for fast food such as mcdonalds.... I wish you God's speed in your dream!
That’s what I’m trying to navigate right now. The pay, employees and cost of everything. Even materials to do a build is expensive now. It’s almost like starting behind the pack of everyone already in business. Going to swing the bat and see what happens though. Thanks for the kind words and best of luck with you guys as well!
I’m curious how you decide what beans to buy and invest the time/energy into profiling. Coffee seems to be like beer the ingredients are all pretty much the same, it’s your brand and your version of the drink people buy.
I will definitely be covering that. And I agree. There is tons a great quality coffee all around just like beer. I have been thinking about how to differentiate and I believe video, media, podcast, and connecting with my customers and allowing them into my world is the best way. It’s a huge experiment and I’m hoping it works! Haha
I live in a Small town in Arkansas, about 3000 people there is quit a bit of traffic because we're nestled in between a few larger cities. I have dreamt of starting a Coffee Shop and small Roastery for 2 years now (there is not one in town) but I have no experience in the industry and I work 40, 50, 60 hours a week. I am ready to work for myself since I am working so many hours anyway. Any advice?
Dude that is exactly my situation, kind of. My town is a bit bigger but I and a project manager for a pump repair company full time. I have never worked in a coffee shop or a food establishment. I do want to just do my own thing. So, my advice would be to just start walking the path. Read about it, listen to podcast about it, make a point to reach out and talk to people around you in the industry and just slowly make it happen. Realize it is beyond a marathon and the sooner you start walking to the goal line the sooner it will become a reality. For me it has been making a list of things I need to learn, complete figure out to get to the next milestone. Over the past few years I finally feel I have somewhat of an idea what the path looks like. Problem is that process is going to be different for everyone. That’s what makes it so hard.
I shouldn't ask, but do you still like your Bideli? You are talking about different roasters for your future. My thought was that you could buy two for the price of one. If one goes down you have another to work with. Also if you are successful like I know you will be, you have another to expand to your next location. This was my thought for myself but maybe I should consider staying away from Bideli Now? 🤔
I do like the Bideli but I wouldn’t start a business like I am wanting with it. I want some more controls and I really want a company based on the US. That way if I need parts I know I can get them relatively quickly if needed. I think the Bideli was a great machine to cut my teeth on and learn. I may cover that in a future video! I am not getting rid of it. Worst case scenario I can use it in an emergency. But I think I want to upgrade and get more data and controls.
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee initially before we decided to launch Resurgence Coffee I had no intentions on roasting. I was very unfamiliar with the process. Roasters did not want to sell you coffee without their name on it, rightfully so. We been roasting and selling since July, I have yet to construct a business plan. I guess my question is, would you have any insight to what’s important for that plan and what isn’t?
The business plan will depend on what you are trying to get. If you are looking to attract an investor, get a bank loan, or funding that is the only reason I would suggest creating a business plan. There should be a Small Business Develop Center rep in your area at a local college that can help. They should have worked with the banks and regulations that are in your area. What is you plan for the business loan?
I went to buy a coffee roaster and the bank (who is my bosses personal banker) told me that he doesn’t want some chairs and a Roaster. My boss rents and is asking way too much for his business. So my business partner and I are starting small kind of like all of you! It’s just some food for thought for my fellow community members.
