You’re absolutely right!! I know old comment, but I gotta come in 8 years later to agree haha. There’s a lot of points in the storyboard where you can see a softer, more solemn expression on Pearl. But in the final version, she’s more crying out as she sings. Its clear that the song’s original intention was just going to be a calmer, sad song, but Deedee put SO much agony into it and more power into the singing than they anticipated, that the animation team changed the animations to fit. You can see this starting at 1:18, where Pearl’s expression in the storyboard looks more calm than the final product. Then again at 1:26, where the storyboard’s expression differs greatly from the final product, and the animation with her hand and her head movement was changed to be more dramatic as well. I feel like this is where Deedee started taking the song to more of a power ballad than the team originally intended, and its SO GOOD. You can also see a more calm expression in the storyboard at 1:45-1:48, showing they definitely did not plan for Deedee to just knock it out of the park like she did. Anyways 10/10 comment and Deedee’s singing being 10/10 as always!!!
Bruh I just noticed the subtle symbolism in this scene. Whenever pearl refers to the past she wears her top hat, and whenever she is speaking about her life now she conveniently takes it off. Also there's another pretty obvious display of symbolism at the end where she lets go of the rose to show "rose" is gone, its really good storytelling and you can tell the effort they put in by adding all these small details. this scene perfectly encapsulates the conflict of this episode
I noticed the Rose symbolism but when you point out that Pearl where’s the top hat when talking about her in the past, it made me realised that she put it on because she felt complete back then like how the hat completes her outfit, but when she talks about now, she takes the hat off because she doesn’t feel complete without Rose. Or at least that’s what I picked up

The songs are usually scripted out to be molded into the original view, so usually the storyboards don’t need to be changed in terms of tone. However, Deedee decided to make the tone more dramatic and impacting rather than the calm tone that was originally planned, and it made it so much better and the story boarders had to change a few of the expressions.
aside from the singing the real heart-breaking thing is throughout the song you can see her face constantly switch from angry, melancholy, lost, pained, depressed, defeated, and thoughtful. so many similar emotions but you can see them indevidually across her face throughout the entire song.
1:25 and 1:43 if you look closely you will see that in the storyboard, pearl is depicted far more quite and almost calm,. Thanks to Dee Dees BEAUTIFUL voice acting the scenes where reanimated 👏

Wow the animation crew really did an amazing job, especially with the camera panning scene. And the fact that the final animation was so close in detail to the original draft just show's how great of a storyboard artist Joe is imo

If you look at the bottom (the storyboard) while keeping the top (the final animation) at the corner of your eye, the top seems much smoother than it actually is. Especially when she puts on her hat at 0:07
omg MK must've loved this so much cuz it's like her favorite Gem ever. plus this song was pretty amazing...and emotional but I didn't tear up though. AND THE ANIMATION! EXTRAORDINARY! It was too great, especially when the camera was spinning for Pearl

I love Rose and all, but I hope that Rose doesn't become known as some ultimate perfect being that did everything right and couldn't have possibly made a mistake. I understand that Pearl was practically infatuated with her, but I hope this knight complex where without a king they can't function stretches only to Pearl. I wish to see some scenes of flashbacks or maybe VHS recording or something that shows Rose making mistakes that a human would make, hopefully showing Pearl that Rose wasn't as grand of a gem as she thinks she was.

the main difference I got, the storyboard edition towards the end makes it look like pearl is defeated and gave up. the fully animated one gives pearl more feeling, making her not only sad, but frustrated. angry, almost. Her expression gives off that "why?!" feeling. I honestly like that more than just pure sadness.
Wah, I really love seeing how timing is decided since the storyboard production. Almost every keyframe is the same as the final result. Love that. My new favorite song. I had very strong feelings about Pearl and Rose relationship, the moment Pearl let everything out was just breathtaking.
I feel for ya. I was not prepared for this song. If I have kids one day I'll make sure they watch this cartoon because it's beautiful and meaningful, and teaches all sorts of things like consent, that it's okay to be queer and so on. All that aside... Yeah, Pearl is my fav gem. I loved this episode.
Wow it's so cool to see how similar the storyboard is to the final. I mean sure it's supposed to be a rough draft of the final but about 90% of the sketches in the storyboard turned out to be key frames in the final, even the angles and facial expressions and the number of shots were kept about the same. This is so inspirational, thanks for sharing! :D
The animators really did an excellent job, not only did they manage to pull off beautiful smooth motion timed with the story board but they also added more emotion to some of pearl's expressions and actions
small thing but 1:34 in the storyboard she sees those clouds of her and rose still together, but it was taken out. I feel like that might have added to her sense of not being able to get over it rather than her looking off to the side all angry but yknow I still love everything about it

Wow, I'm really surprised Pearl's broken and pained expressions towards the end weren't originally in the storyboards. They match perfectly with the escalation of the vocals and bring me to tears every time.
I love how DeeDee's recording was so passionate and raw they had to go back and change some of Pearl's facial expressions to really capture the emotion in this song. God, it gives me chills every time...

One of the things i love about this show is how much control the creators have over the final aimation Usually they ship off rough storyboards and directors notes to the animation studio However in steven universe the storyboard artist actually make very rough keyframes which gives them way more control over the final animation Though the animators clearly still took some libreties to make it all better

To be honest, this is by far my favourite SU song so far in this series. I mean, the animating, the lyrics, it's so touching: how a simple, basic character can make you feel...
Although Rebecca only did a few minor changes from the storyboard, the final animation came out powerful and moving. In my opinion it made a bigger affect on how I feel about the song. One of the thousands of reasons why I want to become an animator Q-Q. I never noticed that until now, thanks Kat! I'm not one to subscribe people but I'm considering a change, starting with you :D.

I wish to see some scenes of flashbacks or maybe VHS recording or something that shows Rose making mistakes that a human would make, hopefully showing Pearl that Rose wasn't as grand of a gem as she thinks she was.

the main difference I got, the storyboard edition towards the end makes it look like pearl is defeated and gave up. the fully animated one gives pearl more feeling, making her not only sad, but frustrated. angry, almost. Her expression gives off that "why?!" feeling.
I honestly like that more than just pure sadness.
Wah, I really love seeing how timing is decided since the storyboard production. Almost every keyframe is the same as the final result. Love that.
My new favorite song. I had very strong feelings about Pearl and Rose relationship, the moment Pearl let everything out was just breathtaking.
I feel for ya. I was not prepared for this song. If I have kids one day I'll make sure they watch this cartoon because it's beautiful and meaningful, and teaches all sorts of things like consent, that it's okay to be queer and so on.
All that aside... Yeah, Pearl is my fav gem. I loved this episode.
Wow it's so cool to see how similar the storyboard is to the final. I mean sure it's supposed to be a rough draft of the final but about 90% of the sketches in the storyboard turned out to be key frames in the final, even the angles and facial expressions and the number of shots were kept about the same. This is so inspirational, thanks for sharing! :D

Pearl's facial expressions are key in this scene! It's amazing how they put everything together to make it feel so sad and dramatic
The animators really did an excellent job, not only did they manage to pull off beautiful smooth motion timed with the story board but they also added more emotion to some of pearl's expressions and actions

small thing but 1:34 in the storyboard she sees those clouds of her and rose still together, but it was taken out. I feel like that might have added to her sense of not being able to get over it rather than her looking off to the side all angry but yknow I still love everything about it
y’all notice that after 1:17 the story board and final animation is a bit changed when it comes to pearls expression? deedee magno went so damn hard singing this song that they had to redo it.
Wow, I'm really surprised Pearl's broken and pained expressions towards the end weren't originally in the storyboards. They match perfectly with the escalation of the vocals and bring me to tears every time.
I love how DeeDee's recording was so passionate and raw they had to go back and change some of Pearl's facial expressions to really capture the emotion in this song.

One of the things i love about this show is how much control the creators have over the final aimation
Usually they ship off rough storyboards and directors notes to the animation studio
However in steven universe the storyboard artist actually make very rough keyframes which gives them way more control over the final animation
Though the animators clearly still took some libreties to make it all better

Although Rebecca only did a few minor changes from the storyboard, the final animation came out powerful and moving. In my opinion it made a bigger affect on how I feel about the song. One of the thousands of reasons why I want to become an animator Q-Q.
