They did a superb job on that amp. Had some great moments in-between dial in. "Why force in an OD when it's obviously not needed" is what I say. Great job on the demo Kyle.
I don’t hate it! But it’s definitely not my bag anymore. If this amp came around like 12 years ago, I’d be all about it because I really liked that wiry, stringy thing back then. JCM800 type stuff. Once I got serious about recording, my tastes changed quite a bit and I started to favor thicker, drier feels.
3 grand is right in the price range of SLO 100s, Friedmans, brand new Dual Rectums and JCM 100s. 5150s are a better value, but the 100 watt heads aren't that far off new. New 100 watt amp heads are expensive these days.
I feel like this thing would sit in the mix perfectly for down tuned guitars, and if using it for standard then maybe the pairing with the speakers isn’t ideal
Anything that sounds like a 5150 is right up my alley ! Chug heaven with saturation !!! If that doesn’t cut through a mix, nothing will ! Love it guys ! Cheers
From your description i was almost sure it was a DAR FBM100. I know Perry from Ormsby guitars has/had one but the other 6 or 7 are still out in the aether afaik. Frederick from meshuggah didn't even get his, and it was his signature head!
That's what I was hoping for too, I commented similar above..!! I'd love to see a review of the DAR, I keep going back to Ola's playthrough on that amp, sounds glorious.....
Solid tone. Am I the only one who was hearing the first 2 guitars sounding like the pitch was all over the place going sharp to flat pretty drastically? It was really noticeable on the silver burst typhon. Oddly enough on both of the down tuned guitars that was not an issue. And the last white typhon also didn't notice it either.
Probably needs a different cab. I'm sure Jason can build anything but his thing is modded vintage Marshall tones and the amp this was based on was a modded vintage Marshall that they fixed and then tweaked.
It does have a tight distortion sound that reminds me of the Soldano SLO. I'm not as unimpressed by the high end as others seem to be either. It may be a different story with active pickups but I think it would sound awesome with BC Rich guitars. I like it but wouldn't pay the price I'm sure it would cost.
I'd be interested to hear you run through it with the presence dialed back to about 8 or 9 o'clock and then max out BMT and then set gain and volume to taste. Did this on my Bogner Uber Ultra and Game changer. Also set depth to taste as well.
ran the presence all over the place throughout the video, including all the way down to 9 ocllock on the dial, same with treble, didn't fix the issue for me
Really cool that you got your hands on one of these. I'd spend some quality time with it, with various dialings to see if you can tame that top end. And if so, make another video.
That squeeze switch is probably diodes considering the volume drop when activated. Unfortunately I don’t have my headphones so going by the iPad speaker. It’s bright but I kind of like it. It sounds wild. I think it would mix well. It might play nicer with Creamback 65’s or greenbacks. Also a pre tube might be a little microphonic.
Man that is a bright amp. I’d take the presence and treble down to at least noon and play with it a while. Not a fan of amps that can’t give me a good starting tone with everything at noon. This one sounds like it would take a lot of work to get comfortable with. Good review 🤘🤘🤘
I actually liked it with the treble almost all the way down toward the end with the Balaguer baritone. I find clangy tones to sound pretty good in low tuned mixes. Not exactly a 2010's metalcore sounding amp though. A little crispy when tuned to drop C or higher it would seem.
Yes sir you should definitely sink some time in on profiling some of those amps you have I have a tonex so I'm always looking for rare profiles I think it would be pretty cool personally
Hey Kyle, I was hearing more low ends when you slowed down and did that chugging riff so I'm guessing that wasn't built for really fast playing but some Vintage 30 speakers might also fix it
Holy top end, Batman! I'd be curious to hear this with speakers that aren't bright to begin with (v30s) Also sure a guitar with darker pickups would be good here which basically comes down to a lot of extra work needed to get what you want from this amp. 😬
That thing reminds me of a metal zone pedal. There is a horrible quality in there that can’t be taken out. It sounds like it needs a 6 band EQ in the loop to take out the gross frequencies. The gain structure is slightly chainsaw like too 🤢
Thank you for the review, Kyle. The amp is alright but it’s hard to imagine overpaying 3k when you can buy real deal 5150s or modern 5150III for around a thousand.
Wow, pretty lively beast from the first note. Has to be a way to burnish that high end. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it...😯
That peavey Bravo that you are seeking to sell may want to think twice about, I think they will be worth money some day as they are James Brown of 5150 and now EVH iconic fame designed and they sound just like the iconic but more like Princeton reverb on clean channel. I love my little Bravo but it's lacking bass with the OG eminence in it. I'm going to test it out again the iconic 40 I just got. I'm to tired tonight to even pull it out of the box 😢
i hate to say it but..theres not much to like here. that top end response especially in the drop c part was just grinding on me..and it never really had enough mid detail. amazing builds and nice builders, but some 1 trick pony butique stuff just aint for us all

I personally didn't like the stringy character to it. I could hear every little hint of fret buzz that I bet I wouldn't be able to hear in pretty much any other amp.

Jason & Shea did an amazing job on this one.
Those highs are probably because of the bright cap/s used.
Everything always sounds pissed in Drop C. Love it.
Agree about not digging the klacky stringiness.
Eating chicken biscuits is good. Eating chicken biscuits while watching a new amp video is gooder.

I actually like the high end. If you wanna counter that use a compressor or an eq in front.
Yeah.. nah for 3 grand. Buy a 5150 and a dual "rectum frier" both and still have some cash left. Good video regardless!

Sounds just like every other high gain amp through Celestion speakers.
Something real aggressive about the high end that I’m diggin actually

An EQ in front might work to tailor the top end. Does it have a loop?
Whoa, that is bright!
Kyle, are you sure that thing doesn't have a bad preamp tube? That squelching noise on the top end is awful! 😫

100% agree about the top end being too harsh. Great video, but the amp is pretty disappointing.
Would love a comprehensive QC pack. This is definitely the only way most of us will get a chance to check it out. Great demo!
I was hoping that you would rip some sick thrash riffs off of a $500K Dumble amp.
Dumble amps have all the high gain you need!
I have an open-backed 2X12 with a couple EVM12Ss in Burnt Tuna tolex.
Can't believe Kyle finally got a Dumble!

I think you are supposed to use Van Halen riffs to test a Headfirst amp.
sorry, it didn't come with a manual
The Atla could do that and pretty much anything else. It's my favorite hotrodded Marshall.
This is definitely my kind of sound. Interesting to see rare stuff like this though.
Hmmm I have to crank the presence on my slo clone for it to sound right too
I first found it sound like boosted JMC800 or boosted 5150 or both of them together don't really hear mesa on this😮
Run bariatone or 7 string.

Boss Katana is better.

Fricker could post process that and make those two pickups sound identical.
that shit sounds so good holy fuck
Maybe a parametric EQ to fix that top end? Or am I late to the party w that suggestion? Lol
The presence was dialed up almost all the way and like 75% of the way. That’s probably why the high end was that way.
