- All working turn tables in Sri Lanka Railways are operated manually. They are used to turn some of rolling stock and non dual cab locomotives. The turntable at Pallai has recently been returned to use

Salute for the men who was pushing the engene
I saw these type of turn table , in the ‘Thomas the Train, cartoon when I was a kid.

I feel sorry for those men pushing a heavy duty engine on a turn table with whatever power they have in their body.
It is hydraulic so it is easy to pull

We had one like this in Vijayawada railway junction also
We still have this in Villupuram junction, Tamilnadu.
But they don't use this since last 20 years.

Very beautiful place. The technique looks a bit primitive though. Surely a better system can be built in these modern times?

Such Turn Tables were very much in vogue during steam engine era. They were scrapped during earlier models of diesel electric locos as they were some what bidirectional. The present breed of WDG3 series are only forward directional . This is causing many serious accidents.in India.
Many are saying that locomotive can run both side but Old generation locomotive wasn't able to run both side, in India we have also such old places, but now that is useless, coz now all the locomotives can run both side, and latest WDP and higher series have dual side cabin for better visibility...
This type is also available in india also long ago .i dont know now a days working or not but it is motorised
How such turns are managed in India ? All our locomotives are not dual cabin. How do we manage this ?

I heard that railways used to follow this technique in MACHILIPATNAM ( a city in ANDHRA PRADESH) as it is the ending point for the track.

my small doubt is, why they are rotating engine. is that both sides are same.
Because the driver cabin should always face forward and in deiesel engine we have one driver cabin
Some engine only moving forward ,they don't have backwards , I mean they move only one side (older engine) all new engine have forward and backward or may be they use for track change or any technical issues

Once you get it moving, the momentum carries it. I would use a set of pullies (block and tackle) to amplify my pulling power by 10 times. That way you get the turntable rotating rather quickly. (Once the table is rotating about 45 degrees from where it once was, you run to the pulleys and disconnect it from the turntable so it won't slow down the rotation once the table passes 90 degrees). You can then lean with your weight on that bar to keep the momentum going a little bit longer.
