The “Extreme Skater” Is a pattern I designed for Steelhead on Pacific coast tributaries.
Very similar to an Atlantic Salmon Bomber dry fly with an extra step, the foam casing. This gives the fly more buoyancy, especially when fished on the down stream swing and held in the currant. The combination of the rubber legs and the moose mane for the throat with a lip gives the fly unique action. The tail and wing is Faux Bucktail a synthetic fiber more durable than the natural.
The fly is durable and buoyant and an excellent addition to a steeheaders fly box, the fly can be tied in different sizes and color combinations. It’s a challenge to tie but to me its worth it. Also, the style of the hook is important, the Kamasan Aberdeen B940 has a wide hook gap which is important, especially when you have a deer hair body. The sizes range from 4/0 to size 4.
Hook: Kamasan B940 Aberdeen size 2/0
Thread: Semperfli Nano Silk 12/0 and 18/0 white
Tail and Wing: White Faux Bucktail
Second Tail: Four Strands of White with Red Tips Rubber Legs

Body: Natural and Dyed Yellow Deer Hair
Body Hackle: Two Cree Saddle Hackles (Folded)

    Collar: Cree Hackle (folded)
    Throat: Moose Mane
Note: The diameter of each clump of Deer Hair including the Orange Butt is approximately is the size of a pencil.
