Thank you! This was the best explanation I have found anywhere. I think where I have gone wrong before was not understanding the difference between speed on the foot petal and speed with the movement of the hands. Can’t wait to give it another go and Inlove your work!
omg this was so helpful. I didn't know what to do with that plastic plate - now I know I don't need to use it. Yours was the first tutorial I saw that explained about stitch length and pedal speed too. Thank you so much.
Thank you! I have done some free motion embroidery at my uni but they have different sewing machines than the one I have so I was a bit lost on how to set up mine. Now I can start working on my project with my own machine, I'm really excited to try it out.
6:11 am Friday - I am so excited just set up my machine with out the foot and it works❤. I have my list and heading to the fabric store to get me a pedal and cord:)
Excellent tutorial. I have been looking for a short tutorial with all the information needed to set my machine and get started with freemotion embroidery.
Thankyou Alison, you have made it so easy for me to understand and get started on a piece of work. Absolutely love your designs and you have a wonderful, free, natural style that is so appealing. You explained everything so well.
Thanks for the video on setting this up and it is the first time I watch a video with someone who has the same sewing machine as me. So I am guessing my setting will be exactly the same as yours. Great tutorial.
Thank you so much for your instructions, I had bought a free motion foot but couldn’t work out how to fit it also the feed dogs don’t lower and I found the plate that fits ! It’s just practice now to control the stitches and the tip of going fast with your foot and slow with the hands is great which I didn’t know. 😊
Thank you Alison for such an informative tutorial. I'm a confident sewist but never successful completed any free motion work as I wasn't sure how to set up my machine but your machine is almost identical to mine which made it easy to understand. I'm now going to give this another go. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills.x
Thank you so much, you're a great teacher, really easy to follow, I've been wanting to give this a go, will go hunting for invisible thread and bobbin fill now ❤ you're an inspiration!
Thank you, also helps to have a Janome ! I've owned 22 sewing machines (1 x Toyota, 1 x Juki, 1 x Brother, 3 x Janome (my present machine Janome MC7700) the rest Singers, of which 2 are still in use.)
Do you wish to give sewing materials to the N. India Mission? I have a Facebook contact that's started a group of 8 Women, who study the Sunday Gospel, and learn how to sew. The are looking to expand their Ministry.
I have an older Janome 6019 machine. I do appreciate your video. I did "have a go" but my stitches seemed to be bunched up and did not look like a regular straight stitch. Perhaps my settings are off? Would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thank you
Excellent clear video. I have a Janome too so have subscribed and will follow. Please could you email the name of the thread you suggested for the bobbin fill.
I'm a newbie, but from what I can gather, from my own country/region Janome retailer website, they will have that information. You can also look up Janome online, and pick your region from their map on that international site, and narrow it down to somewhere closer to you. Get all your model number of machine and type etc. and perhaps give them a call? (a retailer of Janome in your own region, I mean). Let them know if it's a mechanical sewing machine or one with an onboard computer, and so on. Once you have that information, they'll be able to tell you if it's a low shank or high shank. There's even instruction booklets online for various sewing machines which could also tell you, if you don't have the booklet to refer to.
Hi, I really enjoyed your beginners tutorial, thank you. Can I ask, is there any advice regarding free motion rulers . I have a Janome Atelier 3 - eno embroidery foot or darning foot as yet. Thre are many on the market, but I would like to be sure i get foot and rulers compatable with my machine. Many thanks. Anne
Maybe the Janome website for your region/country will have that information? The actual Janome retailer I bought mine from has that kind of information on their website; or perhaps you could call a local Janome retailer in your area and ask them?
I'm doing all the setting as you have said.. But still my machine is not picking up the bobbin thread.... Please suggest what to do.... It would really be helpful.
Do you thread the top thread just the same as normal sewing? I only have a basic brother LS14. Dont think i can adjust tension on there. Thanks for video
Thank you so much for this tutorial which I just found. I have just got a Janome DC2150 machine to learn how to do free motion embroidery. I don't normally sew so this is all a big learning experience for me. The lady in the shop said I should be using the Stop/Start button so I don't use the foot pedal and I tried that but found it too hard to stop quickly so glad I see you use the pedal. Just wondering what tension the machine should be on? I have some fusible interfacing which seems very thin but not sure if that's the correct backing as I want to make brooches? Thanks again from Australia.
Hi Alison, I have a Husqvarna viking emerald 116. When I was using free motion on it, the needle couldn't hook the bottom up, do you know how to fix it? Thank you.
There is no reason as far as i know why it shouldn't work. it may be something that you are doing wrong or you may have a fault with you machine , but it is very difficult to advise you when I can't see it myself. I would suggest taking it to your nearest sewing machine shop so gthat they can that a look at it for you. Sorry i can't be any more help. Bets wishes. Alison
Thank you once again Alison for a fantastic how to set up your machine tutorial. I have today ordered myself a Janome 360DC, plus the open toed darning free motion foot to go with it. I am so excited to get going and trying out some of your video landscapes to make into smaller fabric panels. Could I ask you about the sari silks you use, (all fab colours), and is there a company you could recommend please where I can start, as a newbie? Thanks again xx 😃
Hi Michelle, glad to hear that you have found this video useful and are inspired to start creating your own pieces. I get my sari silk from either www.stef-francis.co.uk or www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Happyblackcatstore?ref=yr_purchases . I hope that helps. Best wishes Alison
make sure you are bringing up your bobbin thread before you start sewing as this can cause bunching of the thread underneath. The other thing it may be is if your top tension is too low, so it's worth checking that as well.
Hi! How does this model handle stretch fabrics? I currently have a different sewing machine and it's hopeless. It skips stitches like mad. A seller is currently offering this janome model, but when they present it they use non stretch cotton.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I can't really comment as I don't use stretch fabrics. All I can say is that I am very happy with it's performance when creating my artwork.
Many people do, but I prefer not to as I find it too restrictive. I use a fine firm backing fabric which means that I don't get a problem with the fabric puckering.
I've been told to use a bobbin case with blue dot for free motion I have the janome atelier 6 is this right if not what is it for as I brought one for this
To be honest I just use my normal bobbin case and I don't have any problems. The blue dot bobbin case is designed for free motion quilting as the tension is about 40% lower and helps to give better stitches on the underside. As you have it, you may like to try it, but as I say,I don't use one. Hope this helps.
that may mean the tension isn't right. Also check that your machine is threaded up correctly and the bobbin is in place correctly too. This happens to me sometimes and even though I can't see a problem I rethread my machine and bobbin and it usually rights itself then.
Oooo thank you sooo much for this tutorial❤. I have not found such a clear explanation of materials and supplies before. I'm ready to start now😅😅
Thank you! This was the best explanation I have found anywhere. I think where I have gone wrong before was not understanding the difference between speed on the foot petal and speed with the movement of the hands. Can’t wait to give it another go and Inlove your work!

Thanks for the video on setting this up and it is the first time I watch a video with someone who has the same sewing machine as me. So I am guessing my setting will be exactly the same as yours. Great tutorial.
yes the setting should be the same, but just check it on some scrap fabric first.
So useful , can I use the button n my machine for this method or is it better to use the foot pedal. Thank you for a great tutorial

Hello Barbara, I use Brothread
Thank you so much ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hi thanks for this wonderful explanation, I was wondering, why do you need the pull the bobbin thread up to the top?
So you don’t get a tangled nest of thread underneath.
Hi Alison, I also have a Janome machine and was wondering if I need a low shank or high shank open toe darning foot?
I'm a newbie, but from what I can gather, from my own country/region Janome retailer website, they will have that information. I'm doing all the setting as you have said.. But still my machine is not picking up the bobbin thread.... Please suggest what to do.... It would really be helpful.
Thank You for This
Do you thread the top thread just the same as normal sewing? I only have a basic brother LS14. Dont think i can adjust tension on there.
Thanks for video
Yes just thread it up as normal. You can't alter the top tension on some basic machine, so just see how you get on.

What am I doing wrong when the thread on the back of the quilt makes a bunch of loopy tangles ?
make sure you are bringing up your bobbin thread before you start sewing as this can cause bunching of the thread underneath. The other thing it may be is if your top tension is too low, so it's worth checking that as well.

Hi Alison. What mske of invisible thread do you recommend please?
to be honest I'm currently using an unbranded on that I got from Ebay. It just needs to be a medium weight.
Should we be using an embroidery hoop?
Many people do, but I prefer not to as I find it too restrictive. I use a fine firm backing fabric which means that I don't get a problem with the fabric puckering.

Hi Alison! I'm loving your tutorials!! Can I ask, please, what weight of bobbinfill you use? Thanks!!
