    Having taught English many years in France, sometimes students who had learned "rules" long before questioned my usage. One I remember is that a student was convinced that you could not use "whose" in relation to an inanimate object. But that usage goes back to Shakespeare and was used by writers such as Jane Austen.

    Thank you so much for including the example "less vs. fewer." It drives me crazy that our news journalists and others almost always get this wrong. For example: "Less people attended this year's party" I would prefer, "Fewer people attended this year's party." It is not that difficult to think things through before the words come out!

  • @cl4613
    @cl4613 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Speaking of mistakes ;-), I was taught to use "not to" and NOT "to not". For example, at 0'36, when you say 'I will teach you how to NOT make these mistakes', I would have said '... how NOT to make these mistakes." Has English changed in 20 years, or has it become a colloquial way to speak (as with fewer vs less) ? And for how long?

    Great lesson! I'm just a bit confused about the explanation of have vs get. I was taught in middle and high school that using just have is an Americanism and we were encouraged to use the "proper British form" expressing possession with 'have got'. "she does the bed" is for parents or maids who fix/organize a bed.
    "He makes the bed" is for woodworkers who build or create the bed using wood and glue and nails.
    This is how I understand it. But I really need more lessons to improve. Plus, I might get influenced with your accent. A British accent is a bonus. 😊 Thanks for the lessons..

    • @johngregory6005
      @johngregory6005 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would say that a hotel maid does the bed, because she does the room, i.e. cleans it and makes it orderly. but when I get up, I make the bed (or not ....). My mother might say 'do your room, and that includes making the bed'. So - 'bed' is a bit of a tricky example! This is in fact a special use of the word 'do', to mean 'clean up', not the general use to mean 'perform an action'.

    • @Schjoenz
      @Schjoenz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@johngregory6005 yes. That is also how I understand it. And the word 'make' is not always mean 'to create' or 'to build', right? It's a bit tricky as you have said.

    • @johngregory6005
      @johngregory6005 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Schjoenz As Lucy says, 'make' has a range of meanings. Clearly saying 'to make the bed' when it means to straighten and tuck in the sheets, is not 'create' or 'build'. If I cause you harm, I could 'make it good' by compensating you for your loss. I can make a payment - online or in person. The word is very flexible in a lot of languages - which is useful for those who understand but tricky for people learning from the outside...

    • @Schjoenz
