UPDATE: Good News! Thank you to the Richard/Bloody Producer and DR for making all the videos available again (EDIT: most but not ALL videos) 😃 What also happened is that I ended up speaking to the Bloody Producer; he made the point - both publicly and privately - that he wished that we’d got in touch before publishing this video. But I want to clarify a few things first:
First thing I’d like to say is that primarily this was made as a reaction video; the purpose of it is to SHARE the old content that we had on our hard drives with the public because it wasn’t available anymore, and hadn’t been for more than one month. Simple as that. Although the mystery of why they were taken down in the first place has since been explained by Richard/BP, it wasn’t our core objective to find out. Nothing shifty. We wanted to make the videos available for all to watch via a fair use/reaction video sort of thing.
Another thing about Richard/Bloody Producer mentioning that he wished that I’d “reached out” makes it sound like we have been on good terms ever since and I simply didn’t want to mention it to him. The last communication we had was in 2016 when I didn’t sign the last contract and it was made quite clear how things were at that point and there’s been no communication up until now. Long story short: things haven't been cool between us for quite some time. We both have had chances to chuck out an olive branch at many opportunities, but ultimately didn't.
I felt that we were releasing this purely for the sake of sharing content with you - the people watching - not to do the dirty on DR or to stir up a controversy. People have written about this news over a month ago; blogs asked me for interviews about it; Tony Northrup made a video titled “DigitalRev DELETED!” On 2nd November 2023 with over 80k views. If either Lok or I wanted to jump on the Hot Controversial News bandwagon, we could’ve done it much, much earlier.
Alas, I have apologised to Richard/Bloody Producer directly for not attempting to contact him before hand. And the good thing is that, as Richard and I are both grown-ass men, we can talk again, bury the hatchet - let bygones be bygones - and just move on. And even more importantly: the videos are back online on the DRTV channel and, well, Richard/BP has encouraged us to make more reaction videos if we want, which is great because we really enjoyed watching those old videos together and I hope you have too!
    Thanks for the support, everyone!
    Love from Me

It does say a lot that it had to become a pain in the arse for them before they even addressed the issue.
But as it all seems to have been sorted out amicably in the end; yes, it's best to not go around accusing people.

    Hey Kai & Lok,
Bloody producer here. First thing first the videos have bene restored (there’s a post on DRTV channel explaining what happened). Long story short, no one is monitoring the channel so things decay. I wish you’d reached out to me first, but I also understand why you do what you do.
I haven’t been back to our old channel for years, and this certainly brought back memories. I still remember the hundreds of weekly meetings we had together, exchanging banters and ridicule each other’s haircuts. I remember our shared love for Top Gear, and Lok our shared Apple fanboyship. Those were the most fun 7 years I had work-wise, and I still miss those days a lot. I’m sure you’ll agree that those were also our most creative years, daring to think big (nothing compared to today’s Mr Beast era but those were some big ideas on TH-cam back then!). I’m glad we got it going for so long. I’m also glad you guys continue carrying on making these videos.
I have reached out personally and hopefully you got my messages. Would be happy to catch up whenever you guys are back in Hong Kong.
Please do more of these reaction videos. I’d be the first one to watch! And thanks for bringing back my memories, and renewing the interest in our old channel and content.
    Cheers,
    Richard (Bloody Producer)

      The explanation, from @DigitalRevTV:
"We are now aware of the “disappearance” of videos from this channel. There is no longer a team for DRTV therefore this channel and its associated email inbox are not monitored. An updated agreement sent to the channel’s email address was not signed passing the deadline this July. Upon contacting TH-cam support, we were instructed to remove the channel from its MCN network and an error must have been made somewhere causing the disappearance of videos. We are working on having them restored.
No one at DigitalRev including the Bloody Producer has ever been contacted by Kai or Lok about this issue. We regret that a small issue that could easily be fixed with one message had to be made into a controversy for video views."

I remember coming across these guys when watching FroKnowsPhotos on the Cnaon 80d back in 2016. And seeing these videos again nearly 7 years later is like a time capsule. But considering DRTV doesn't work with these guys anymore, it makes sense as to why they deleted them. But they don't realize just how much of lost media would have occurred on TH-cam, had it not been for someone in Kai's network to archive them all.

At a time when photography videos on TH-cam were becoming too focused on the specs and scientific tests, DRTV was a breath of fresh air.

As you can imagine that's why I was so excited when I finally got to meet you guys in person and shamelessly asked for some selfies with you guys :D

When I was early on in learning about photography I started out watching you two plus Alamby and I always really enjoyed your videos. After you all left, DRTV just sort of went to shit. I hung on for a while but unsubscribed after a few months because I wasn’t getting anything out of it any more. Thanks for the memories and the photo lessons!

I watched the video deletion process online. I had made a playlist of videos about Canon lenses reviews, and just when I switched between the two, one of them was no longer available, then the rest. I managed to watch a lot a few evenings before, I was very nostalgic.
I know this may not be entirely appropriate to write here, but I think a big part of the success of your DRTV videos was your interaction with the city, the variety of backgrounds and activities. It was much more fun than todays equipment reviews in some deadly boring British forests. Please come back to the live environment!

Since DRTV is not allowed to post comments here, I'll use my personal account.
Those were the most fun 7 years I had work-wise, and I still misses those days a lot.

My first photojournalistic work was the 2019 Hong Kong protests. I spent half a year covering them, right up until the lockdown. And the reason why I agreed at all, although at that time I was working in my own country and in a different genre, was precisely your videos. I thought, okay, people look friendly in those old videos, I can handle it.
I think you not only showed well the photographic equipment, but also the people and the city in general, so in that sense it is a big loss for society, that those videos has gone.

you guys are definitely absolute legends and the DRTV Videos you guys did carried me through my studies as well.... The very rough and "eh, f*ck it" attitude the videos and "tests" had... exquisite!
But not just the _bullshittery_ there were some genuinely teachable videos there... the entire cheap camera pro tog series... All those videos that were entertaining but had buttloads of knowledge teaching you... ugh shame...
I guess all that I can do now is hope that by some unforeseen coincident the entire video catalog makes its way to the archive... Not saying lok or Kai should upload them as that would probably warrant a copyright law suit but, you know.... some higher power...

I can proudly say, "I grew up watching DRTV, taught me a lot about photography and awesome gear not to mention how entertaining it was. It is a similar feeling of when I am growing up watching Dragon Ball Z or other memorable shows if you will. They will forever be in the corner of my heart rent free". Thank you DRTV team, Kai & Lok. It is so unbelievable that DRTV deleted all your videos. Back then, you guys created that unique, innovative and entertaining way to review camera gear ... it was a huge inspiration for me and maybe also many others! It also was the golden days of DSLR cameras and the dawn of the mirrorless age back then.
I'm happy that all your videos have survived "somehow" ... if I knew it earlier, I'd surely have downloaded some of them in full when it was still possible!
And one thing is for sure: I will never ever forget that great Leica M9 video with the Moonlight Sonata in it!

It's the same thing with other media/mediums, including works on the internet from decades ago up until now. Thank goodness archival sites like The Internet Archive still exist. I mean, there is _in the world_, but not so much on youtube, where 'content creators' are incentivised by the algorithm to just do gear reviews and churn and histrionic things like 'Why I will never use a telephoto lens again and why you shouldn't either' and other attention-seeking stuff. But you can still buy a photobook and have a quite moment over a coffee with it.

I stopped watching DRTV when Kai and Lok stopped making videos for them. Watching Kai wandering around HK instilled in me a strong desire to go there myself one day, as its the kind of place that one could shoot all day, every day and keep on finding worthwhile locations and situations to photograph. It inspired me to get more interested in photography and the art behind making a good photograph.
You both need to go back and start the series up again!
And its funny that the first video featured is a 550D, because it was a DRTV review that made me purchase that very model, which I still use and love.
