- Goose wing, or wing on wing, what do you call it? We show you how we sail wing on wing using a polled-out genoa and prevented main (or mizzen). Just as we think this sailing life can't get any better a fierce squall hits as we sail into trouble inside a rocky anchorage. This is a desolate part of Indonesia and we can’t afford to have any big problems here because there will be no-one to help.
With reefs sprinkling the seabed, it's about the worst place for our genoa furler to seize. The only thing we can do is get out of danger fast with the foresail fully extended and run straight into the storm. With the boat moving forward, we jump into action and pull down the sail in gale force winds. Our major concern was not to let the sail fall into the water as the boat bucked and rolled. It took all our strength and team skills to get the job done. With the sail securely fastened to the guard rails we were clear to head into the cove and work out what had just happened.

The details of what you were trying to do were unclear to a landlubber like me. What was clear is you had equipment malfunctions, and they happened while you were in bad weather. Being experienced, you were able to improvise some other solution, make allowances for the wind and weather; and were able to reach a safe anchorage. (For which we are thankful. Feels like I know you even though we have never met.)
Could any of that have been anticipated? Is your equipment getting worn? Would it have been possible to anticipate the weather? Not being critical at all, just asking if there are some lessons you derived from this experience?
I enjoy your videos immensely, love the British accents, and gave you the first thumb's up to this post. All I ask is for you to stay safe & keep making these wonderful videos.
Yes inspecting the equipment possibly might have been able to notice and avoid. However this is not a real common issue and so likely not one that many really inspect all the time. As noted in the video with so many not even knowing the name of the part. And even then, depends but still might not have been noticed.
To anticipate the weather. Meh squalls can come quick or fade and dissipate into nothing, go around you, etc. They are bit unpredictable. HOWEVER. As Liz provided a top tip: watch that damn horizon ... followed by top tip: squalls can come in quick. Obviously she thought Jamie should have known better and at least been better prepared IF the squall did come at them and quickly.
Hi Dean, thanks for the comment! To answer your questions: the bolts shearing like that was bad luck, perhaps exacerbated by running goose wing for much of the day. We've anchored in squalls before, but this time the furler failure made it dangerous. Some quick actions and steady thinking helped us through. 👌 Liz

one of the things that I really like about your channel is that you keep it real, you show warts and all but you don't over dramatise things and then run through a sound debrief afterwards in a non sensationalised way. Wow what can I say but excellent episode and footage of what can happen out there when sailing... it did make me smile quite a bit... I just went through that yesterday when coming back into port... but I was alone , solo sailing... it took me two hours between running forward and then back to the cockpit to get the sail in... I was saying to myself that this would be a great TH-cam moment... watching me screw up.... lol

Our furler jammed once when we had our 150% genoa halfway out. It actually wasn't the mechanism, it was the furling line wrapped up and knotted inside the drum. We were dealing with pretty heavy seas on Lake Superior, and after all attempts to dislodge the jam failed, we spun the boat around about a dozen times and wrapped the sail around the headstay! It was terrifying, at least for us who are still a little green when it comes to heavy weather. But it worked! Our jib sheets looked like a rats nest when we entered the port, but we didn't care!

We have the same furling gear and have had the same problem - fixed using helicoil thread inserts then loctite and tape over the lot.
Well done you two! Well deserved drink too at anchor. Same kind of thing happened to us a few years back so it was neat to hear your story. This is why I tell everybody who wants to buy a boat: Start off small, like 25' or so and sail that boat for a year or two. You'll likely experience stressful situations and how you react will determine if you are meant to invest in a bigger liveabord type of boat. Thanks for sharing.

Millie never panicked that was the key and do not understand much of this sailing stuff but for what you did well done I would not have had a clue what was going on.

You must remember, there was a time when they hadn't a clue either. Sailing is learned skill: find a yacht club (not the fancy drinking kind, but the adult races Wednesday night youth races Thursday night kind) and start learning!

You might also try toothpaste to buff the scratch our of the acrylic. It's a much less aggressive abrasive than most rubbing compounds. This is used to buff cloudiness out of auto head lights. Loved the top tip, btw.

@@followtheboat I agree as I was going to suggest toothpaste as well on the acrylic but Jeff beat me to it. Try it at one end of the mark first and rub slowly to start. :)

I've been watching your vids for over a year. Love you as a couple. Locations are terrific but its you that bring a smile. We are in the final phase of buying our boat (yes I've watched your videos Reasons NOT to buy a boat and Reasons why you SHOULD buy a boat) and for some reason a Mavic 2 Pro is a focus. How do you land your drone on a moving boat? I cannot find any information or input but I know you've done it so thought I'd ask the experts. Thanks from someone hoping to meet up some time.
It's not easy, Kevin, at least not on our boat. Esper is over-rigged so there's a lot of cable in the way. If you watch the guys on the Volvo race you'll see they're able to fly the drone straight to the back of the boat. We don't have that luxury as we have davits, dinghy, solar panels and a mizzen mast in the way. Plus there's only two of us! We don't often fly when we're sailing and, when we do, we drop the sails and put the boat into wind/current before attempting to catch it. Launching and landing whilst at anchor is a lot easier!

Well that was a bit of a worry for a while. Expertly handled though. Probably a good idea to put the term spinnaker pole in front of it though. Does that mean that whilst you've not sailed to Australia, you have seen a Cockatoo? cheers.

You may be able to sand the scuff out of the acrylic. Fine wet/dry sandpaper starting with 600 grit, then 800 and finishing with 1200 grit. Small circular pattern, take your time with it and it should work out just fine. I did this with the gel coat on my parent's boat after an moron ran it into a dock. When I was finished, you couldn't tell anything had happened.

If you've never done it before a bit of courage and a stiff drink may help as at first it will look like you are only making the scuff worse. But, fear not as you move to the finer grits everything will fade away until you are looking at clear acrylic once again. This works great on scuffs. Deep scratches, well that problem goes.... deeper.
Happy you came thru that pretty much unscathed. The acrylic scratch should be an easy fix unless it's a gouge. Several methods of re-sanding the acrylic with a high numbered grit sandpaper and polish or maybe even toothpaste...ahh the wonders of TH-cam as a source of DIY information! Jamie, repairing the rope damage to you acrylic windscreen should not be a problem. There are several systems available to repair plexi/Lexan/acrylic scratches. In aviation it's common to use very fine grit wet sanding system, starting at 1500 grit for deep scratches and working in steps up to a very fine grit. There are also liquid polishing systems, like the Novus Repair Kit, that use a multi step polishing system. Hope this is helpful. Cheers.

@@followtheboat I have used Novus to take out scratches on museum display case vitrines (bonnets) many times.
use gas soldering torch to remove the mark and any small scratch's from acrylic.

I have Harken bell-end system sitting on my desk. The hook was broken and also it hit deck.
Reading the manual about it states that the harken bell-end is not designed to store upright assembled. What was done on our boat.
You need to undo it and and leave the bell below. Hoist the pole up into a cup holder did the trick.
Harken never sold the parts , you need to buy the complete unit for replacement and that’s expensive.
Shame on Harken for doing that type of business, and I say that liking Harken! I wonder if it would be less expensive to have a machine shop fabricate that part?

I can not express fully how much I dislike roller furling: it's not if they fffail you, it's when they will fffail you. And well over 90% of the time, it's coming into anchor or dock.
Hanked-on sails are great and I get the arguments. Still, the amount of work in hanking on and off different sized sails for different conditions would drive me insane. In one day we'll use the Code 0, both foresail and staysail, just foresail, just staysail or none of the above. They're easy to put up or away and you can adjust easily to the desired size.
BUT most problems associated with roller furlers are down to poor maintenance (we should have known about those bolts!). Cheers! Liz
@@followtheboat If they're dropped and packed properly, they really aren't that bad. It's basically a variation on the same argument people use against spinnaker polls (oh my it's so much extra work, why would you bla bla bla), but once you're onto it it's really not that bad, right?
@@wilfdarr That's Liz's opinion. Having sailed on boats with hanked on foresails I didn't find it so much of a problem, but there were occasions when we'd have two sails lashed either side of the foredeck and a third sail up the forestay. For the odd bit of weekend sailing this is fine, but when the winds are constantly changing over long passages having the furling gear takes away some of the headache. Yes, they fail, but then so do most things on the boat!

Just curious, but why have PFDs become so unfashionable with blue water sailors on you tube, especially when the whole crew is on the bow?
We wear ours at night or in bad weather when offshore when we also clip on. I think that's the same with most full-time cruisers. Cheers. Liz
It's all fun and games until someone loses a spouse. A fellow went over last year up in Yellowknife, at anchor (mis-stepped, blink of an eye kind of thing). Next time your half way through setting the sails one of you should walk back to the cockpit, hit the MOB button on the GPS, and see how long it takes the other to get back to you, stopped, and set up to help you out of the water. Now how does that go if one of you is holed by the spinnaker pole or otherwise injured?
I understand nothing has happened in the many years you've been sailing but you can't let yourselves get complacent.

@@followtheboat i would check at any full size airport...find a helicopter operator....they might have some on site....or something similar they use to repair scratches...even fixed wing operators probably have some.
