    my local vet recommended spraying a mix of bicarb soda + water after cleaning the area of urine to mask the smell & deter pet from returning !,this in fact causes a similar stain (my bicarb mix was a little strong i believe!) i am having very good results from your suggestion, so thanx for posting TRAININGMISFIT

My question is my wood floors are old and are not finished not glossy or shiny so I dnt have black stains but it smells will this work for the smell of pee? And another question why isn’t my floor stained black? Is it because it’s not a finished floor? Because my mom only has 1 dog and her floor is stained black like in your video? But hers is finished and kinda shiny. Thanks 😊

    • @stacystec

      Drain cleaners are usually lye, which does stain wood. I don't know if the peroxide will work, but it doesn't hurt to try. Worst that happens is that it only lightens the stain and you end up having to sand it ( which was likely going to happen had you not stumbled across this video)

      the HP is likely going to lighten the tannins in the wood, so darker stains will have a greater degree of lightening as a result of the application. In my situation I had straight poly application with no staining, so there wasn't a drastic change. As the HP isn't damaging the woods integrity, you could always restain the board(s) if there is significant lightening.

    • @Jennifr1966
      @Jennifr1966 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm about to try the HP idea. My dog got out of her area while we were gone. She's sick, so when she broke housetraining, she did so with bloody urine. Floor now quite dark, MUCH like video...
      Would you recommend that I apply HP, giving it a couple days in between, to prevent it getting too light? If it does, should I use a small can of stain, or should I try tea bags?

    • @stacystec
      @stacystec  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jennifer W the HP affects the very top layer of the wood. I think of this as an alternative to sanding, a quick way to rectify the darkening tannins that got damaged by the uric acid. I can't answer if other methods will work better but if you do go with the HP, be patient with the process.

    • @stacystec
      @stacystec  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@randymulder9105 Mine was just straight poly finish, if you have a stained finish you'll need to take picture of an adjacent board and head down to the hardware store and try to color match the stain and just re-apply. If its just a poly surface, a new coat of poly should do the trick. I didn't need it on mine. I mentioned this to another commentor and I'll share it with you: On stained floors you may want to just sand down the effected area and skip using the peroxide. There are so many stain varieties that it is difficult to anticipate if the peroxide will help. This peroxide tactic is a a quick fix when you are dealing with lightly stained, variable or unfinished floors. Anything else is a crap shoot on getting the stain back to its original hue without re-staining.

      My floors had a fresh coat of poly and this technique worked without harming the finish. I didn't test across different brands or different types of varnishes { such as lindseed oil) - I would say try it over a week and see if you see a change.If it doesn't you might have to sand. I tried the technique in this video because I didnt want to sand a newly installed floor.
      If your floor was stained - don't use this technique. The whole point of using the peroxide is to lighten the tannin made by urine.Stained wood won't return to its natural color.

      Provided it’s a poly finish, the peroxide shouldn’t have changed it shine. Can’t speak to other types of varnishes/finishing agents. If you did some scrubbing, it’s possible to remove some of the luster. There are spray-on poly brands that you can get at a hardware store if the luster is gone, just spray - sand (with fine grade) repeat until it’s even. Slow process that should take a few days - always follow directions about dry times with poly products.

    What! That didn't work. Is there something wrong with your eye. I had a similar situation however, mine was much worst. The urine from my cats pissing nightmare situation saturated the wood floor and the 2 by 4 at the base of the floor.. To make things even worst it migrated into the dry wall about 1/3rd up from bottom and the substrate floor as well. The smell was vile and putrid. I mean I had to wear my respirator doing this entire process or I would vomit from the odor. All this being said it came down to 2 choices. 1 rip out the floor? No, that was a big job or. 2 cover and seal the flooring and smell. After sometime trying to find a answer I came across some info on line. Figured it can't hurt. I followed the lead and started the fixing process. Using shellac I began covering the entire area that was soaked with piss. The reason for this is shellac penetrates faster and dries much faster. This allows for a several coat application in a day. I covered the entire 2x4 base and sub floor 8 times. I then proceeded to fix the dry wall and then remove the wood floor so I could and lay the marble tile down. It came out great but the best part is that i can't smell the gross cat urine never smell again. Getting rid of two of my cats at the time helped a lot as well. Hope this helps someone out there dealing with this issue.

      Not sure what caused your situation. if the HP doesn't work, sanding it will ( of course you have to poly as well). The HP is worth a go, sanding is the solution when all else fails. Likely just surface effected.

    If you have a cat, they pee in their litter box..there really is no reason one should have damage to their hardwood if you put a pad or liner down under the litter box. It's the dog pee that ruin hardwood floors..Dogs pee on carpets that soak through to hardwood or pee on hardwood itself. There is no excuse for damaged hardwoods with cats if you used a plastic litter box, pads, liners etc..

      No, that finish has opened up -- otherwise the wood would not be affected. Just dump it on there and cover it so it doesn't evaporate. Watch carefully because it can go faster toward the end of treatment.

    These are wood stained floors right? Would the stain be damaged in any kind of process like this? My mom is freaking out, “they’re going to have to sand it.. we have to get a whole new floor!” Ahhhh!!! Help🥺

    • @stacystec
      @stacystec  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be careful with dark stains because the peroxide will lighten it. If I had a dark stained floor, I'd go straight to sanding the boards with the spot and trying to find a stain match at the local hardware store. My floors had a poly finish.

      I think the active ingredient would be the sulfuric acid (it reacts with the sodium bicarbonate to make the bubbles). Concerned about the coloring though.

    • @xaxx1st

      Stacy, there's no sulfuric acid in Coca Cola. The acid is phosphoric, but it is not a bleach.

    why not just use a decent stripper, lightly sand the outside edges where the old stain will meet up the new stain and just apply a new coat. lol such a small area. just go with the grain.

    • @stacystec
      @stacystec  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Michael-vg1fj
      @Michael-vg1fj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah so what. it's a 12x12 stain. why wait 4 days for couple shades lighter. ad long as you match up the stain it will blend perfect. stripper works instantly. most certainly not brain science.

      @stacystec  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1
