    Ejections are true punishments.

First, if you throw a punch in the NFL against a player or an official, you're gone. 9 times out of ten is going to be an ejection.
As for one of the most memorable fights with my team... it's a bit of a tie for me as an Eagles fan. Probably the most vivid I can remember was when Chris Baker for the Commanders hit Nick Foles well after the ball was thrown and took him down from behind nowhere near where the ball was at with a cheap shot. It not only injured foles, Jason Peters went after him and it sparked a fight between both teams. It ended with both Peters and Baker being ejected from the game for fighting, but the one who ended up getting all the scorn (and rightly so) was Baker for the absolute cheap shot he laid onto Nick Foles.
The second was when Deshazier Everrett (again of the Commanders) deliberately lowered the crown of his helmet and speared a defenseless receiver in Darren Sproles during a kick return. Not only was the hit absolutely brutal, it was purposeful. It sparked a HUGE brawl between both teams to the point the officials had to direct both teams to their benches under threat of penalty.

I don’t think the penalties are too tough. While it is a physical game, it’s meant to be professional.
However, there was one last week where a player shoved a member of the medical staff that was coming out to attend an injured player. That absolutely needs a huge fine and suspension.

    • @fyrf0x8910

The fines and suspensions help keep players in check and prevent the outbursts. Because it's such a physical game, fights would be constant if there weren't significant penalties. Conversely, because it's a physical game you only have to play to dish out fully legal punishment on your opponent. A punch won't shut somebody up as fast as a touchdown

  • @rodneysisco6364

If I may sound like an old curmudgeon, which I am, these are mostly lightweight scuffles..in the 70s the work on the line was much rougher than any of these dustups and the occasional brawl was pretty damned savage..

Dang it. I'm late again. But I have to defend my guy. Andre Johnson is the calmest, most soft-spoken guy who ever played football. Cortland 'innegan (no F after Andre beat the eff out of him) was an ass. Had beef with everybody. He pushed Andre throughout the game, until it was time. You take wins and losses, but you don't take disrespect and Andre finally got fed up. Best money he ever spent!

I remember watching that Titans/Texans game. If I remember right, there were two fights that game, this was the second. There has always been tension between these two teams since the Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee and became the Titans. There is no love for Tennessee in Houston (which makes this Houston-living Tennessee fan have to stay in the closet). Finnigan was definitely not the nicest player, but I still rock the 31 jersey every Sunday.

Funny thing about that Steelers/Browns scuffle with Joey, since Joey was ejected, that game would be James Harrison’s first start. He played so well he featured more in the rotation and when Joey left well, the rest is history.

The game isn't getting soft. Fighting isn't a part of football and these guys weren't going to calm down. They needed to be tossed. The Browns player who hit the Steelers QB on the head with his helmet could have done serious damage. Those helmets are heavy.

Yes, American Football is a game of slams and bams, but not ejecting them for brawling and fist fighting like drunks in the street would have its own consequences. They will constantly make illegal hits and break rules because "nothing will happen". And how the hell is a brawl due to someone losing thier temper sportsmanship? It isn't. And kids are watching this and if temperamental players are never ejected it will teach the kids watching that a fist-fight solves everyones problems. No. It doesn't work that way, there has to be consequences for unsportsmanlike behavior, especially in the US, where we tend to be violent already and looking the other way can be deadly. (edit) You asked later if the penalties were too severe. No, I think they are way too soft, maybe if these hot-heads were ejected more often and for longer periods, both they and thier coaches would do better to keep this sort of thing from happening. I know that most players are just fine and aren't losing thier tempers etc beyond an f-bomb or two, but the ones who continue to escalate already heated situations need to be provided with anger management therapy.

You are somewhat correct about the open hand versus a fist. An open hand could get you a personal foul penalty. Hitting someone with a fist will usually get you ejected. However, taking a swing at someone with a open hand is considered the same as using a fist and swinging at someone. I am not sure about the NFL, but in college and high school football just taking a swing at someone will get you ejected, even if no contact is made.
The NFL runs a program to help former players who have hit upon rough times. The money from fines goes to help fund this program. Also, when a player is suspended his base pay for each game of his suspension is forfeited. Base pay can be VERY different from the multi-million dollar contracts some players have. Usually, much of that money is deferred and is not part of his base pay for the season at hand. Their are 17 games in an NFL season. If you're suspended for one game, you forfeit 1/17th of your base pay.

I can't help but laugh when I hear that players were fined $5,000.00. These guys have multi-million dollar contracts, so that's not even a slap on the wrist. Quarterbacks have been known to spend that much on dinner & alcohol bar bills for their entire defensive line. The last game I ever watched was the Superbowl match between the Giants and the New England Patriots back in (I think it was) 1991? If popular history is to be believed, and I can't say because I wasn't around to verify it, the sport that rugby/soccer(futbol)/football is based on was an ancient Mezoamerican sport played by the Aztecs or Mayans; I don't recall which. The crux of that older game was that the losers were sacrificed to the gods, as in taken to the tops of the temples, had their hearts gouged out and their blood drank by priests kind of sacrifice. So. . . . based on that, the punishments in football have gotten really soft. Based on logic, they could be a bit more.
The reason I say so is because it's they're career choice, meaning they could easily change jobs to be an Amazon warehouse worker in a heartbeat for any inexplicable reason, but also they're on contract. Even if they're suspended, even if they are the MVP, even if they tear their ACL and have to sit out for an entire season, they get a flat sum paid to them as per their agreed signed contract. They get extra from branding deals and what not, but the main thing is that they basically have a lifeline as long as they're still contracted to the NFL.

All the fines are donated to charities. Yes the NFL is getting soft. There's been a lot of rule changes in the last 20yrs to protect the players. They've cut back on hard hits and head to head collisions. It's safer but it lost some it's hard hitting action. And you can't taunt the other players. Now sometimes when a quarterback gets sacked there calling it roughing the passer its 15yrds and automatic 1st down. You can see the players holding back on tackles because they don't want to be penalized.
