Playing JV in 9th grade I remember the ump called infield fly rule in effect. For those who don’t know it means the batter is automatically out if he hits a popfly that stays in the end field when runners are on base. This prevents the fielder from intentionally letting it drop to get a double or triple play. It basically removes the force out. Anyways, the batter hits a pop up a mile in the air that our second baseman loses in the sun and drops between him and the pitcher mound and no out was called and now bases are loaded. Our coach comes out to ask what the hell and the field umpire knowing he’s wrong for flaking still sticks to his guns and says “well it wasn’t high enough”. A huge argument and ejection ensued. Case in point, if a local small time ump getting paid 50 dollars to officiate a game isn’t gonna admit he’s wrong, these “professional” ego-driven assholes certainty aren’t

@@robbiemize Wow, very punctual reply. I know a lot about pitching and pitcher injuries, despite not being a pitcher. Arm injuries and coming back from them can have an effect on accuracy. Plus there was no history between these two teams. Respect my authority before I eject you.
I can understand tossing someone getting in your face, throwing equipment and disrupting the game. But those first two? Catcher wasn't doing anything, and the batter was walking back to the dugout. There was 0 reason to toss em out, and umps need to have a check in place for that kind of power.
you don't know what the catcher has been saying all game, even while looking away. there are plenty of players think they can MF the ump if its done discreetly. and they are wrong for thinking/trying that.
I didn’t care much for Jim Leyland when I was younger but the older I got, the more I realized he undoubtedly cared about HIS players regardless and would stand up for them. I see Buck Showalter in the same light, and Joe Girardi as well.
The only one I would 100% call an overreaction is Eric Cooper coming out from behind the plate to yell at AJ Burnett. Hallion/Lackey and the Kazmir clips are honorable mentions. The rest are likely players saying the "magic words." Striking out looking and telling the umpire "you (fucking) suck" doesn't take very long and is an instant toss.
I know umpires have a hard job, but how do you miss some of these calls, the ball is right down the middle, and most don't admit that they made a poor call and get angry/defensive then toss a guy
@D exactly. Nobody wants to watch some fat attention seeking egomaniac tarnish the game because a player hurt his feel feels. Bring on the robot umpires. It's long overdue.
I don't think an umpire overreacts when tossing a pitcher who throws at a batter and misses, then throws at him again and connects. Ian Kinsler no less. One of the most docile players in MLB.
Yeah of all the calls on here that was the one I am ok with the ump tossing him. Clear as day that he meant to plunk him but missed the first go round.
HopeForNope fuck all that. Those were the first 2 pitches right there you know that was on purpose. Those teams had beef anyway so no warnings. They knew that
When can we stop having gym teachers like these damn umpires and have gym teachers like a super buff, super skilled athlete who’s super cool, super chill and super friendly?
Lackey's wasn't overreacting, he was obviously throwing at Kinsler. Umpires don't have to give warnings on egregious pitches when the intent is obvious to everyone.
GreenFroppy 212 Leyland should’ve smacked the shit out of that umpire or the very least the player should’ve swatted the umpires hand away and point a finger in his face saying don’t touch me
The Answer To 1984 Is 1776! That’s a instant suspension. Umpires are allowed to hold coaches and players back to protect themselves and there fellow umps, they do it out of safety. Players and coaches aren’t allowed to touch them while arguing because it’s considered the same as assault. They are the authority of the field, they are the bosses and are in charge until they leave. Don’t cross lines, obey the rules and respect the ones in charge, stay in the game, pretty simple.
@@nateward9592 first off, umpires aren't allowed to do that (See Joe West suspended for holding Jonathan Papelbon). Second, that umpire had no right to push a batter torwards the dugout like that.
Robert Hyatt he was suspended for not just holding him back but for grabbing his jersey and forcibly yanking him when he continued, which is very much a no no. While that was wrong of Joe, Umpires ARE indeed allowed to protect themselves and fellow crew members no different than I am allowed to protect myself and my fellow referees on the football field when coaches and players are fired up. We get to hold them back and keep them from progressing further because we want to stay safe and we want to help them avoid further problems. And he did have a right to give him a light push towards the dugout, he’s the umpire, it’s his job as the authority of the game to move it along. Batter lingered more than he should’ve and tried to whine his case rather than walk to the dugout, as an umpire you’re not going to allow that. He gave him a nudge to move along when he took too long, rather than fully engage him and make it a scene, they took offense and they went up in arms when they really didn’t need to, it wasn’t THAT big of a deal. Again, listen to the authority of the field, obey the rules and don’t do anything to ruffle feathers and we all get along no matter the field or game. I’m a little more lax in that if someone needs to lean in to say something, put an arm around my shoulders to lean in to speak (especially since I’m only 5’7, not one of the taller guys) I have no problem with that, I get it can get loud. I abide by the rule of you respect me I respect you. But if they come in with a chip on their shoulder, shove me or say something wrong to try to get my attention, then the trouble starts. That’s the point where penalties and possibly ejections occur. And trust me, I’ve officiated long enough to know this stuff by heart. I’m a sports nut and an official that takes things to heart and makes sure to know them to the last detail.
@@nateward9592 I have officiated baseball for 9 years. If I did what that umpire did at any level, I would be in trouble. Now, I understand coming in between my partner and someone who are arguing after an ejection, but a) the batter wasn't ejected, and b) there are other ways to incentivize the batter to return to the dugout without putting your hands on them. I appreciate the comment though. As a fellow arbiter, I can understand how tough these situations can be. The last thing I want to do is instigate an overreaction, and putting my hands on a player in that way would definitely do that. Good luck to you in the upcoming season!

These umpires have far far far too much influence on the game.
ABSOLUTELY!!! WAY TOO MUCH...
Baseball can totally get rid of all the umps. They can review the calls and make the calls via video and screen reviews
They keep fights from happening like what woulda happened if that dude kept throwin dumbass pitches 2 pitches in. Other than that who gives a fuck about language
Isn’t that the point of umpires?
Carl Garner kinda the job of the umps
John Lackey deserved to be tossed against Kinsler. Clearly intentional.
Who cares about that.. umpires egos are bigger then the ballpark. I hate baseball now because of umpires especially the ones behind the plate.
And if it's not intentional, that's worse! If he is *accidentally* throwing BEHIND the batter and then hits him the next pitch, that's fucking dangerous to have him continue pitching. He simply doesn't have the control. He's going to fucking hurt someone.
@@celticwarrior5959 True. Even if it's intentional, it should be part of the rules of baseball as it makes the games fun.
Yup....no idea how that is an ump "overreacting"?
Celtic Warrior you’re aware umpires rotate behind the place in each series right? Example if joe west is behind the plate for the first game of a Red Sox Yankees series, the next game he will be at first then the next at second. No umpire calls balls and strikes for an entire series. Just so you know lol
Whether Lackey was trying to or not, he threw right behind his head, missing by 3 inches, and then hitting him the next pitch.
Yea that toss out was justified
Was thinking the same. And then the commentator pointed out bad blood from previous meetings. Seemed by far the most justified ejection in this vid

It also the toughest, but I do agree. Guys like Angel Hernandez and Joe west should’ve lost there jobs centuries ago
😂😂 holy shit great comment 🐐🐐🐐
Don't forget Ray Charles...he would be a great umpire!!
Baseball umpires are really, really good. Great in the field with the additional support of instant replay. 97% accuracy behind the plate. They're great.
3:28 an umpire who is the aggressor and trying to initiate a conflict like this should be fired immediately following the game.
I don’t know much about how the league works, but the umpires apparently have an OPAF labor union in place. The League, for all intents and purposes, can’t fucking touch them without risking a class action lawsuit from the labor union.
They can charge players but players can't say a thing or charge at them. Makes sense.

This is what happens when you give a job that requires a keen eye and level-headedness to ornery old farts who've had cataracts for 30 years and need a damn walker to get onto the field. I don't understand why anyone above the age of 55 can even be an umpire.
Stop being rude to the elderly, umps actually get 99.5% of calls right and they're old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. The players are crybabies.
@JJD They do though. Search it up, they have a very high correct call rate. Meanwhile, players make errors more often.
The Caynuck I don’t know about the players part but elderly umps should be the more level headed people on the field. With that said any ump that does this should get disciplined by calling Marlins games because I swear that some do it for attention and nobody watches Marlins games, so there’s that. The other angry old farts should only ump every once in a while as they start getting grumpy with life...

This is why it should be perfectly acceptable to drop kick an umpire.
Leyland was talking in x2 speed haha
It pisses me off that umpires can touch players but the players can't touch the umpires or it's a fine
1:55 really wasn't an overreaction. Lackey was clearly trying to hurt Kinsler. The ump has to protect the player.
Disagree. He's throwing at the body not the head. Second, it's two pitches in - throwing out a starting pitcher that early completely changes the game. Issue warnings and then throw him out of he does it again.
@@danlorett2184 once is an accident. Twice in a row requires effort. And if not, tough shit. All that warming up leading to that.... and you do it twice? You shouldn't be on the mound. Period.
True. If the pitcher is a danger to the batter for whatever reason, then he shouldn't be pitching. The umpire was making the game safe in the only way he could.
@@danlorett2184 Throwing at the body can still cause injury and a helluva lot of pain. The batter is seriously vulnerable in the box and the pitcher is taking advantage of that vulnerability.
