  • A visual investigation in collaboration with @WashingtonPost provides a detailed examination of how Hamas was able to breach Israel’s vaunted security barrier on Oct. 7, 2023, and carry out its attack.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate
This special collaboration stems from a reconstruction by The Post, with additional on-the-ground reporting and riveting interviews that present a remarkable picture of how, as The Post reporters show, Hamas was planning the attack in plain sight, and Israel was blind to its own vulnerabilities.
“Failure at the Fence” is a FRONTLINE Production with Schonder Productions in association with The Washington Post. Written, produced and directed by Gabrielle Schonder. The correspondent is Jon Swaine. Reported by Jon Swaine and Joyce Sohyun Lee. The senior producer is Frank Koughan. The executive editor of The Washington Post is Sally Buzbee. No, it didn't. What it proved is that technology has to be backed up by robust rules of engagement. Saying your helicopters can't fire at armed men coming through the holes they've blasted in a fence unless you have confirming ground observers to sign off on a kinetic response is not that.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, aid to Palestinians totaled over $40 billion between 1994 and 2020. No other country has anything like the UNRWA, which has enabled the ridiculous concept of passing down refugee status across generations to settled Palestinians and calling entire 50 year old neighbourhoods refugee camps. I lived in Nachal Oz for 4 years. It was obvious to me the fence was more theater than an effective barrier. A single regiment of good infantry at 4 or 5 bases on the border would have stopped the attack in one hour. The IDF has some of the best infantry in the world. None of the front line bases were ever properly maned, built for defense or guarded. One has to go all the way back to the French army of 1940 to equal the incompetence shown by the IDF on October 7th. No effective forces at the border and a 18 hour response time in a tiny country means lack of intellect and realistic planning at the top. The IDF should be able to put an armored division anywhere in the country in an hour an a half. You only need two divisions on alert to do that. That seem like a minimum when you have hostile armies on 3 borders.

      Israel is not occupying anything.
Israel was never and has never been indigenous Arab land. Look at a map of Arabia; Israel is not there.
The term "Palestinian" is false, recently made up for political purposes.
The PLO invented the term "Palestinian" in the 1960s. It is utterly bogus.
Walid Shoebat, a former Muslim terrorist who at that time lived in the area that became known as the "West Bank," (another invented term) said "how can I go to bed as a Jordanian one day, and wake up the next day as a Palestinian?"
Then-PLO Executive Committee member Zahir Muhsein, in a 1977 interview, said: "The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality there is no difference between Jordanians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for our political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since the Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct ‘Palestinian people,’ to oppose Zionism.”
There are many, many more quotes like that. 60 years ago, there was no term "Palestinian" to refer to Arabs living in Israel.
Jews have been living in Israel for thousands of years continuously.
When the British mandate was rolling to a close early in the 20th century, they sought to give land to both Jews and Arabs. The Jews accepted every offer. The Arabs turned down every one.
The day that Israel began on its own rather small part of the British mandate area, and only on the part given to Israel, they were attacked by six Arabs countries who swore to push them into the sea. That failed. Five Arab countries tried again in 1967. That failed spectacularly. Then an Egyptian-led coalition of five countries in 1973 that initially succeeded, but ultimately failed.
Every attempt at handing an Arab state to the so-called "Palestinians" has been turned down by the "Palestinians". That includes several before 1948, again in 1948, and again in 1998, and 2000, and 2008. Every time the "Palestinians" say no, demanding every inch of Israel, and the end of the Jews - at a minimum those living in Israel, although some call for the death of every Jew worldwide.
Israel offered Gaza to Egypt many times in the past. Egypt refuses to take it.
Israel left Gaza completely in 2005, and pushed to help establish it at as a peaceful home for the Gazans, aid included. Instead Hamas took over, and turned it into a terrorist nest, attacking civilians mostly in Israel, but also in Egypt. That is when both Egypt and Israel erected a separation for the protection of their own respective civilians.
Note that Egypt and Jordan were among the countries that had previously declared war against and attacked Israel. Israel has always offered peace to any Arab or Muslim country that wanted it. Egypt accepted in 1978/1979, and Israel gave back the entire Sinai desert, captured from Egypt five years earlier. Israel and Egypt currently have a very good working relationship.
Jordan accepted a peace deal in 1994. Since then they have a cold peace with Israel, but peace it still is.
Note that Israel made peace three years ago with Bahrain, Oman, and the UAE, and was coming very close to making peace with Saudi Arabia, a country which had attacked Israel many times (1948, 1967, and 1973). It was this outbreak of peace with the Sunni world (85% of Muslims) that caused Iran-backed Hamas (all of whom are Shia) to attack Israel.
Also note that the "Palestinians" have been in and out of many Muslim countries over the years, and have fomented upheaval and war in all of them, leading to their expulsion. They nearly overthrew Jordan, so Jordan killed 2,000 and expelled 30,000 "Palestinians". Beirut was once called the "Paris of the Middle East", until 1975 that is, when the "Palestinians" turned it into a civil-war torn hellhole.
Kuwait recently kicked out over 100,000 "Palestinians".
The Syrian civil war has been about Assad (truly an evil man) trying to get rid of his "Palestinian" problem. Asaad has killed hindreds of thousands of them; the world pays no attention.
I hope you find this useful.

Maybe the oppression of humans for decades, walling people in, depriving them of basic human rights and necessities, of dignity, of clean and ample water, of voting rights, of freedom, of prosperity, of hope , and mainly depriving them of possibility brings this on. Who else on earth needs this kind of "protection" from their neighbors and why? Israel provokes these attacks every day of the Gazan's lives. What goes around comes around. This will NEVER END until Gazans are granted equal and human rights. And this is not a "war". This is a slaughter of civilians, 70% of whom are women and children , using unguided bombs and eventual starvation and infectious diseases - all violations of the Geneva convention.

The heartless slaughter in Gaza is genocide, carried out with unimaginable ferocity and cruelty. Denying food and water to two million people is, all by itself, a war crime, a deliberate attempt at mass murder calling for immediate rescue and the arrest of those responsible. But Israel is doing far more, far worse and, yet, The United States is shielding Israel from the consequences it has earned. Instead, it helps Israel paint itself as the victim. That is the reality.

It was not an accident that the building of castles was necessary, the only thing that offered protection against viking raids was a stone wall.

My understanding of the Bar Lev line is that it was a military installation. The wall was also staffed by members of the IDF. Maybe it's time to admit that Zionism is wrong. It's too bad Israel is a failed apartheid state and it's too bad the IDF is committing an ethnic cleansing in 2023.

I truly hope that Frontline can continue this precious work on both sides, without bias, because we need the facts and these reactions to facts - not of talking heads and politicians and all those with points to score but of all those involved and reacting with truth to their own experiences.
Plus the technical explanations, which were terrific. As an American, I wonder if we too don't rely on faulty expectations, over-reliance on technology, faith in human expertise and infallibility. The fence has the same limitations of any fixed position or wall. Through out the world wars and other conflicts it has been proven time and again that these can not stop a motivated and well armed force. This is why mobile armor or overwhelming infantry and artillery are the only real solutions to stopping an advance. If the enemy breaches one tiny spot they flow through that spot and in moments the wall becomes the property of the enemy. If you have mobility your force can quickly converge on any attack point or if necessary absorb the attack and give some ground while still maintaining the barrier.
Major strategic mistake to think that an unmanned wall can stop a fighting force. It never has and it never will.

Perhaps if people weren't kept in a chicken cage without basic resources for survival, without human rights and living under such abhorrent conditions would such technology be required for their high-intensity repression. Oct 7 was horrific, precisely because the anger and force driving it was that of a modern slave revolt, of people deeply exploited and repressed under advanced and organized socio-technical means, those exceeding that of the Nazis. I'm disappointed by the lack of context in this documentary, which goes straight into the Gaza barrier in a way that normalizes the forced displacement and expropriation of land of a designated ethnicity, their forced migration into the world's largest internment camp and the systematic deprivation of political rights, medical supplies, food, basic goods and international access for almost two decades as the world just looked on (or in the exceptional case that if the international community tried to bring help and bring aid, they were slaughtered).
This documentary misses a lot of things, we’ll see if publicly funded media in the US is allowed to do real investigative journalism into Israel, I’m not counting my chickens. The New York Times has published an investigation that Israel knew of the attack more than a year in advance. Egypt had given warnings as well as Israeli women’s border watching patrols, who were hushed or ignored when they brought it up in the days leading up to October 7. It is clear that the deployment of Israeli forces to the West Bank on that day was not just pure coincidence, though this documentary doesn’t go into any of this. With the kibbutz featured and the people killed, there are so many questions that are overlooked here, including testimonies from many that they were attacked by Israeli forces, possibly acting on the Hannibal Directive. Sadly it is from this kibbutz that two of the three Israeli men taken hostage and waving white flags were shot by Israeli forces inside of Gaza. Released hostages have expressed the sentiment that they were treated like pawns and sacrificial lambs for the Israeli state. This doc only touches the surface of many questions that still need to be answered, meanwhile the US keeps bankrolling the genocide in Gaza and Israeli military and media will keep up its DARVO technique and says it will continue on unabated even if convicted in the ICJ.

Since Hamas trained in the open in Gaza for a year flying paramotors, practicing breaching fences and walls with live explosives, assaulting cinder block buildings with the Star of David on them, mockup guard towers and Israeli Merkava tanks and were overheard saying on their radios "I've reached the Kibbutz" it was known what Hamas could do.
On Oct. 4 Israeli settlers stormed the Al Aqsa Mosque. On Oct 7 Palestinians launched Operation Al Aqsa Flood to capture military and civilian hostages to bring back to Gaza to exchange for hundreds of Palestinian men women and children held in Israeli jails. When the IDF reached the Kibbutz there were Hamas fighters with hostages and civilians locked in their bomb shelters. Hamas had AK-47 rifles and some RPG-7 antitank armor-piercing rockets. The IDF had infantry with M-16 rifles, Merkeva tanks with 120 mm high explosive rounds, 50. cal machine guns, 7.62mm machine guns, Apache ground attack helicopter with nose-mounted 30mm chain machine gun, high explosive rockets and Hellfire anti-tank missiles. The aftermath in the Kibbutz is the IDF fighting Hamas and killing all of them and some hostages in 5 hours.
edit: Why there was a music festival with hundreds of kids in a war zone 3 miles from Gaza where journalist have to wear body armor and helmets and people are supposed to be able to reach a bomb shelter in 15 seconds after a Red Alert rocket attack alarm goes off I have no idea

Not going to comment on all of your nonsense.
      Just the Nova part.
What do you call a war zone?
What type of war was in the are during this time?
What do you define as a "war zone"?
Seems that you are lacking some basic knowledge.

they were simply just thinking that they were the victors, but the vanquished doesn't say they are vanquished.
oh and IDF not doing their job? They do, just... not where are they supposed to be.... they're somewhere else entirely (Bank).

yeah the fence did its job pretty well actually, the attackers all had to reveal themselves to cross it, there was just no response forces

There were no kids at the 3 day drug fuled rave party for mostly off duty soldiers. Stop your lies. And the burnt cars were destroyed by hellfire missles and rockets from helecopters obviously.

The similarities between the Bar Lev line in 1973 and Gaza border is so striking. The intelligence blunder, the unpreparedness, the attempts to coverup are so similar as if reenactment, a second take in film production. The Israeli complacent and hubris are the same😢

We cant depend on technology alone. Man power and technology should go hand in hand.

There must be soldiers rooming around the borders and telescope and watch tower. Not depend on technology.

You can depend on peace. It’s easier and cheaper. I don’t know how people want to live safely on a stolen land.
