A great project you did there, and I have finally put this together. I put it in a box with some diffused acrylic material over the leds, and it looks really good.

I started my electronics journey a couple of months ago with a {I thought} simple project in mind thinking I would need a few LED's and a battery. ;-} Now I'm messing around with timers, and gates, shift registers etc and trying to make head and tail of them. Thanks for this video! It has been really useful. I made it with an ESP32, still on the breadboard. I had to put capacitors between the gnd and vcc of each shift register, the leds towards the end of the row were flickering weirdly but the capacitors helped. I read that ceramic 0.1 uF Capacitor should be used but I only had 10.uF electrolytic capacitors and that seems fine. My ultimate goal is 2 digit 7 segment display with rgb leds, this project has got me one step closer, thank you!
Hi I'm about to start your project, that is to manage 12 rgb leds autonomously, with integrated 74HC595, but in this example the leds are powered by arduino, since I will need to turn on the leds all together with arduino power supply it will not work. how can i modify this scheme by powering the leds with an external power supply. Could you kindly give me an example of how to modify the project. Thank you.

why it must use 270 ohm resistance?Is there any reasons that you can tell us at length? thank you very much! I tried 220 ohm (1/4 W) resistance,it cannot work,though.Of course,I successfully finish the project with 270 ohm resistance,I'm just really curious why orther resistance cannot work.

I have a question about rgb leds... it may sound stup1d but, leaving an rgb led to a single color, can damage the rgb led? like burning that color and then, when we choose to change to other colors, it displays wrong? i like to understand the code, because 32bits sending is understandable, but with 5 74ch595 it is not that easy. I try to find a way for a other project also use 5 shiftregisters and how to send the data string to the 74ch595. So please can you sent my the code to analyse it. Tnx a lot.

How could you power all that with only arduino sourcing the current for all the LEDs? And the 74hc595 can’t handle that much current either I gues… ?

how many RGB LEDS you can control using single IC?
A single IC with 8 output pins can control two RGB LEDs, leaving two pins available for other leds.

But you can connect as many as you want.
