    I am constantly getting questions from you guys about my French learning experience. How I learned, how long it took to feel comfortable with the language, what resources I used etc.
    I know my French is not perfect in this video but I did try my best hehe and everyday counts as further development to the learning process.

    @fitzerelli1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +543

    I could understand most of what you said .iv been learning in a loose sort of way for 8 months . I think im Lower intermediate level. It's much easier to understand foreigner speaking French than a French person speaking French

    • @learnenglishwithrichard8175
      @learnenglishwithrichard8175 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I completely agree. I live in France. I speak poorly, but I actually think native English speakers speaking French are much, much easier to understand. I have some friends who are French that I understand quite well now, but I still regularly* struggle to understand most people without 3-4 attempts.

    • @drjp4212
      @drjp4212 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@learnenglishwithrichard8175 that's probably because native French speakers tend to speak like a non-stop word, they don't have clear intervals among words, which generates long and awkward clusters.
      Intonation during the speech is very different.

    • @learnenglishwithrichard8175
      @learnenglishwithrichard8175 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@drjp4212 I think you are right that they seem to mash a lot of sounds together... I have noticed some very specific reasons for this that I actually found very interesting to ponder. I would actually like to explain sometime in a video when I get chance. French is a beautiful language though, I would say to everyone here it is really worth learning.

    • @drjp4212
      @drjp4212 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@learnenglishwithrichard8175 I'm Brazilian, and as a Portuguese native speaker, it's easier to understand Spanish from Mexico than understanding Portuguese from Portugal, because Europeans tend to speak that way, with very little tones transitions coupled with a lot of smashed together sounds.
      It just takes some time to get used, though.
      French is the least Latin of all the Romance languages, but I already have a lot of common etymologically derived words, even though the phonetic system is very strange compared to Latin/Italian/Spanish/Portuguese.

    • @learnenglishwithrichard8175
      @learnenglishwithrichard8175 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@drjp4212 Thank you for taking the time to tell me this; it was very interesting. I hope to improve, and I feel confident I have made progress, which is my key aim each day. I would politely disagree that there is little variation in tones in English, however, I would agree that we often use 'choice of word' rather than 'choice of tone' to express ourselves in the way we want to. There are many subtleties to these choices of words that someone could learn, but they would not be immediately obvious to a non-native speaker. There are many words that have connotations that exist outside of their definitions, because of the context that they most appear in. Thank you once again for your information. Take care.

    • @maries.5587
      @maries.5587 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oui je suis d’accord, le français est dur à apprendre (surtout pour les gens qui ne parlent pas encore de langues romanes) mais c’est sûrement pas la langue la plus difficile au monde, même pas en Europe. Bien sûr que ça dépend toujours de la personne qui l’apprend et des autres langues que parle cette personne, mais objectivement le français est une langue relativement simple et claire à apprendre: votre prononciation suit des règles avec très peu d’exceptions (pas comme en anglais), il n’y a pas de différents cas/déclinaison des noms (ce qui est le cas en allemand), vous avez tendance à relier plusieurs mots par des préposition (salle de bain, machine à laver...) plutôt que de créer de nouveaux mots hyper longs et incompréhensibles (ce qui donne moins de mots à apprendre et des mots qui sont plus courts) et vous avez un ordre de mot obligatoire (sujet - verbe - objet) qui facilite largement la compréhension et aussi la production des phrases. Je m’y connais pas trop avec les autres langues car je parle qu’allemand et anglais mais si on regarde sur Internet apparemment la langue qui est considérée la plus difficile en Europe c’est l’hongrois. Donc pour faire court: Chaque langue a ses challenges :)
