She's awesome. This terrible story really represents the polar opposites of motherhood. I would have reported him to the police because it had to be obvious it didn't stop when he was back to basement creeping on his computer but I totally understand why she didn't go that far. It was very complicated and unfair to their children. It's sad those girls had to go through this. If all the parents knew, their friends knew. Twisted.

I am constantly trying to educate and protect my kids from exposure to dangers online. I can't imagine doing this to them. She is so sick. I am furious and heartbroken for that poor girl. She deserves so much better.
Here's something scarier. There was an episode of catfish that was very similar to what Mary was doing. She took her daughter's pictures and sent them to males. The males were teenagers also. She even talked to a guy on runescape and that guy is the one that called catfish
What I don't understand is if a MAN did that to his daughter he'd be charged and put on a bloody register (justifiably so!!) how did authorities decide "nah it's cool off you go" arghh. Haven't been so mad at a case in ages!

He had a lot more reason to believe he was talking to a real person since Jessie's own mother had everything she needed to MAKE her identity real. NOBODY would guess her own mother was taking lewd photos of her own child, it would be crazier to be suspicious of her. Especially back then.

Lemme tell you, I’m 33 and back in the day on AOL and yahoo chat rooms. That ish was insane. All we’d say is “asl?” And people could say WHATEVER and we would talk to them and say all sorts of stuff. I was a preteen-teen and I’m sure I was talking to older people but never even knew. Chat rooms back then were so creepy and crazy. There was no social media… you could just pretend to be anyone and they couldn’t look you up on FB or IG. Gah it’s so crazy how it used to be. So dangerous!!
Second husband was caught sharing cropped old photos of him and I to just him and while I had all 6 kids and my MOTHER on a trip, I came home to find out he had meet women in chat told and Even on the phone.
I'm older than you and I relate so much. However, it was very different then. We were "safe" online through dial up (that noise!) we didn't have to be taught not to share personal information. We just knew not to. I worry about my children now. Back then it was so easy, so innocent and nearly everyone in our chat rooms, we knew. Or it was a friend of a friend etc. Ahh easier times!
It’s really heartbreaking for Brian. He was a good guy, who was even trying to protect a girl he thought had been groomed. He just got trapped between two monsters.

Born and raised in Texas US here, right outside Ft Hood Army base. Yep our kids can catch charges for teens sending each other nudes although that does not get prosecuted often without some other crazy backstory. Technically it IS legally child P if you as a high school kid send your high school boyfriend your own nudes, so you can get CP possession or distribution.
Both catfishes are unbelievably disgusting... But I'm just imagining the Olympic level mental and psychological gymnastics needed to use your daughter like this. Was it as twisted as rationalizing it by thinking “she's my child, I birthed and raised her, so I should be able to use her however I want"? 'Cause if so.... First of all, gross AF, and secondly, getting flashbacks just thinking about that possibility. I hope her daughter understands that none of this is on her, she did not have anything to do with this whatsoever. I wish her the absolute best, she certainly deserves as much.

This whole case is wild. I graduated high school from the same school as Jessie. I'm a few years younger. Jessie is married now & lives a quiet life elsewhere. She deserves that & to heal. As for her mother, I have no idea as to what happened to her.
I agree because Jessi was innocent in ALL of this. Neither or Bryan deserved any of that and her disowning her mother was the BEST thing that she ever did for herself! That woman does NOT deserve to be a mother nor does she even deserve a family to begin with. I am SO GLAD that Jessi is getting the peace and happiness that she deserves, but it's unfortunate that the same couldn't be for Bryan. In all honesty, the only ones that I truly feel sorry for in this case are those two. That's it. The two catfishers Mary and Thomas are PURE EVIL creeps and I firmly believe that there is a special place in hell for BOTH of them!!!!

I guessed that "Jessie" was also a catfish but the fact that it was her own mom using her identity and putting her in so much danger sharing her address and everything absolutely floored me. I feel so sorry for that poor girl, I can't imagine how horrified and betrayed she felt when she found out.
Danielle, you did an amazing job telling this story, in fact, I don’t think anyone else could have told it as well as you did. Catfishing, double-cross catfishing (I made that up), internet love triangles, stolen identities and coworkers falling for the same catfisher in a different state?! I resigned myself to possibly not finishing this one due to sheer confusion. Instead, I was almost literally on the edge of my seat, went through an entire can of Pringles and a full bottle of soda, and was enthralled the entire time. Kudos!
Brian died not knowing he was fooled not just by tommy BUT worst by MARY. He died thinking it was because of Jessie. I pity Jessie how she was used by her mom and how she was exploited.

As a mother, I cannot imagine doing this to my own daughter. Like, I never would have even thought of something like this. I realize that a young, innocent man was murdered and that "Tommy" was a terrible person too. But the utter betrayal of a mother... I just cannot get over that.
It’s actually so infuriating that the two most innocent people in this case were the ones hurt the most. Brian was the only one being himself in this, the only one telling the truth about who he was, but he died. And then, Jessi, I can’t imagine how fucking traumatized she is knowing not only that her mother did all of this terrible stuff pretending to be her but because a man LITERALLY DIED for her pictures. And then also, so many random men over the Internet now have her intimate photos, some of which she didn’t even know were being taken. It is so messed up in so many ways and I’m just so heartbroken for Jessi, her dad, “Tommy”s family and Brian’s loved ones. These childish, horny ass losers deserve each other, and I wish that they would have just found each other for who they really were instead of dragging everybody else into their bullshit.

He grows up and asks Catfish producers to help him find out who the “gamer girl” he met online was. Then he finds out all this about this woman using her daughter’s photos also.

I recently watched an episode of Catfish that was similar to this. No murder was involved, but a guy thought he was talking to some girl and it turned out it was actually the girl’s mom pretending to be her. She would send him explicit photos that she stole from her daughter and even take secret photos of her daughter while she was sleeping. The fact that there are actually people like this is so disgusting.
Why in the world would you send compromising photos of your baby to other people?! I know she was a teenager and I’m not a mom, but I imagine your child will always be your baby in your eyes, you’ll always do everything to protect them, at least that’s what I imagine a good mom would do. What Mary did is so sickening and sending messages to an almost 50 years old man, when Mary knew very well he was 50… And also how can Thomas threaten someone, who he thinks is his daughter’s age, he’ll send people to rape her?!
I have two teenagers and a pre-teen and yes, they are and will always be my babies. A normal person would not even contemplate doing something like that to their children. Mary is VILE.

I agree because Jessi was innocent in ALL of this. Neither or Bryan deserved any of that and her disowning her mother was the BEST thing that she ever did for herself! No murder was involved, but a guy thought he was talking to some girl and it turned out it was actually the girl’s mom pretending to be her. She would send him explicit photos that she stole from her daughter and even take secret photos of her daughter while she was sleeping. The fact that there are actually people like this is so disgusting.

The fact that Mary got away with it is disgusting. She's a child predator, at the least. Jessie was a minor when she started to exploit her. Why is that not a crime in the police's minds? Taking explicit photos of a minor without their consent is harassment too. I hope Jessie is doing ok now and she's in a better place. My mum did this. She pretended to be me talking to a 20 something year old korean guy when I was just a teen. I feel severely affected by her actions even now. But feel like the whole thing got swept under the rug and it's something we can never talk about.
