    How long does the sweet potato need to sit before potting for a vine? I have a few sprouting and would like to get my indoor plant started.

      Eric Williams, good question! You want to wait until the sprout is a half inch to an inch long before potting up. You can plant when they are longer, as you see in the video.

    I planted a magenta colored vine one. Once it grew large enough to need more space, I took it up to the Columbia University greenhouse, where it absolutely thrived. It even gave out with some small mini yams. I made a casserole and it was very good. 'Famous chef who grew her own veggies...' It was total fun...

    Hope you see this..... the plant is a great idea...my question is can you grow these inside till spring and then plant in ground to grow the potatoes?

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jean Paeth, You grow sweet potatoes outdoors with slips, which are the vines that grow from the sweet potato that you see in this video. So, providing the vine stays alive and grows healthy for you, yes, you can harvest slips from the plant you've grown indoors and plant outdoors in spring. You would remove portions of vine that are healthy and then root them in water and then plant those portions (slips). As for planting the whole thing in the ground outdoors in spring, that might also work, if you attach the vine to the soil at various points as you see in the video and it roots. If the vine doesn't last indoors, next spring you can get another sweet potato and let it sprout and cut out the sprouts when they are 5 to 6 inches long. Remove the lower leaves, leaving top leaves on and root the slip in water. Once you have a strong set of roots, plant outdoors. Hope that helps!

    Will the plant produce fruit this way or just the vine? I love the way the vine looks but I don't really want the actual potatoes lol

      Sweet potato leaves are nutritional and edible. If sweet potato plants are grown in bigger size, deep containers or even in the ground and provided 6+ hours of sunlight outdoors, you can harvest sweet potatoes in a few months.

      Rhonda Williams, the plants will last several months, but at some point they tend to peter out and don't look all that good--becoming very rangy, so it's best to just plant another one at that point. I had this one for about eight months, and at one point it was very long. Fertilizing them can prolong their life, though.

    Nice video but how to get the potatoes to have those nodes/leaves in the first place? Once I get those, I know how to plant them in the pot :) Thanks!

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rk, Great idea for a video. This can be the tricky part. You need to get sweet potatoes that haven't been treated with a chemical that inhibits the eyes from forming stems. That generally means getting organically grown ones. Then you need to wait until the eyes, which are stem nodes, begin to form sprouts, and then let them grow into stems. When this is occurring, make sure the sweet potatoes have good air circulation, so they don't rot while the stems grow. Don't put them in the refrigerator, as that will inhibit growth. Hope that helps.

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      powpaow, you can try to transfer the plant to soil. If you do so, I would recommend using the method in this video, because soil roots are different than water roots: th-cam.com/video/wjnx9_svihg/w-d-xo.html Generally, you won't get potatoes growing on the plants when they're growing in soil. You'll just have a lot of foliage.

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron Newton, I think you're asking about how to get the sweet potato to start creating sprouts? As I mention in the video, you need to start with a sweet potato that hasn't been treated with a sprout inhibiter. Organically grown ones tend to be better sprouters because they generally aren't treated. Then you wait for the sweet potato to sprout. They sprout more quickly when the temperature is warm, so keep them in a warm area of the house/kitchen to encourage the sprouting.
