Hey Friends! Welcome
In today’s video I’m sharing with you how I transformed our boring plain hallway into a colorful galaxy hallway with new colored can lights, fiber optic LED star lite ceiling and a glow in the dark moon hatch that leads to the attic. I’ve been dreaming up this project for a while now and I’m so excited to see it come to life. I started by cutting out two panels to fit the hallway, out of 1/8” thick birch plywood that I got from Ganahl lumber. I painted the panels white and drilled out the holes for the fiber optic LED lights. Each panel got 300 lights, 600 lights in total for the hallway. I also added a new 6” can light to the end of the hallway where there was not a light before. I changed out the existing can light for a RGB thin 6” can light that can be color controlled by my phone. I’m really impressed with how the lights turned out and it really gives a fun vibe to the hallway. I changed out the square entrance to the attic for a circle hatch that I then covered with a thin moon cut out that I created on my Onefinity CNC. I then added Total Boat Makerpoxy with grey and glow in the dark pigments from Black Diamond Pigments. The over all affect was exactly what I was hoping for. During the day the hallway looks unique and clean, at night is when it really comes to life. I’m so stoked on how it turned out and it’s quickly turned into my favorite room in the house. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this video in the comments.

Neat!
Thank you so much friend
So magical!! I think this is just so groovy. You always amaze me with your clever wood brain!
Ahh thanks friend
One of the coolest ideas i've seen!
Thank you so much friend
We all agree that the moon was the jaw dropping piece. So here's the question: Assuming s/he could get the CNC work completed, is that something a normal person with little/no artistic talent could do, just by procuring the materials, watching the video here, and maybe a small amount of additional research and practice? Or, rather, is that something that would require hard earned knowledge, skill, and talent?
Honestly, I feel like anybody could do it with a little bit of patience and ingenuity, you could totally do the same thing or something close to
@@wood_brain I'm going to do it. It's so awesome. I just love that gradient effect you have around the craters. I saw on this comment board some talk about a longer tutorial you have elsewhere on the subject, like Instagram or something, but you didn't offer me a link here. Is there a longer/more detailed tutorial available?
I really like the way your brain works :) amazing!
Ahhh thanks friend
Wow this is fabulous 😍😍😍😍😍 this video is underrated big time.
Well thank you so much!
Cool project. I am a little bit obsessed with the moon. Followed progress on Instagram and I even liked it just painted white. You could definitely sell the moons on their own.
Ahhh thank you so much friend
This is insanely beautiful… I’m tempted to try something like this but I don’t have nearly enough skill
Heck yeah thank you so much friend you can totally do it I have faith in you
Wow, so great! Awesome job!!
Thank you so much Becky
This is soooo cool! Bravo! 👏🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much friend
That is so awesome!! Curious to see the wiring in your attic though lol
I took that part out but we daisy’s off the other light and ran a outlet to plug in the fiber optic led, not much in that side of the attic, we have another attic on the other side of the house that we go up in more often.
What a great project, a lot of creativity, but @8:36 I wasn't expecting to see the moon so early in this project. :) I think this would be perfect in a bathroom, but I'm not sure how it would hold out with all that moisture.
Thank you so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it
I'm in love this is awesome
Thank you so much friend
@@wood_brain your welcome my love it's true though its stunning

Omg can I order one of those moons for my soon room
I’ll be making a limited run of smaller moons 6 inches in diameter this month.
11:19 Without further ado, let's place that glue.
You crack me up
11:50 We want to get a nice flush cut, no ifs ands or buts.
Too funny 😆
Very nicely done. Did you wire in the fiber optics or do you plug them into an existing outlet? I guess I’m asking where are you powering the fiber optics
I ran out let’s to our attic so we could plug lights in, so I plugged the fiber optics into one of the outlets and it came with a remote to turn them on
14:32 Without further ado let's turn off the lights and view that glowing hue.
On it 🤣😆💡
5:29 Hahahah....Ryobi glue gun. I had no idea there was such a thing. I use the ones from the dollar store. When the glue sticks run out I just buy a new gun from the dollar store.
Just be careful that Ryobi glue gun it’s honestly the most dangerous tool I own… no control on the heat and it’ll get you every time.
Great result! What exactly did you do for the “trim” where the board edge meets the wall? Was it just caulk?
It’s such a tight seam and because there’s a lot of things up against it you don’t even see it, so I just left it
13:50 Without further ado or proxy, let's pour that epoxy.
I need you as my writer 🤣
@@wood_brain I think you already got me for free. Too bad my lawyer dad has passed on. No worries, he would never work for me for free anyway.
Do you feel that cutting the fiber strands would've been easier before mounting the panels to the ceiling?
Possibly but I wanted to make sure that there was enough play, and I didn’t pull any of the strands out of the hole when installing it
What brand of fibre optic lights did you use ? Did they come with the gold motor thing ?
How do you get the power to the fibre optic lights to they need to be attached to a power source
I got the fiber optic off of Amazon and yes the ballast section is gold. I happen to already have an outlet run to our attic, so I plugged it in to the attic outlet and it run off of a remote.
did you end up using a diffuser on the moon lighting? Why not use projection vs the led fiber optic solution (seems labor intensive)? For the drilling wouldn't it have been faster to cnc the holes (and you could have done accurate star patterns)?
I have the diffuser material I just need to add it… Why not project it because where’s the fun in that when you can actually have LED fiber optic. I had fun drilling the holes and it honestly went by pretty fast plus my sheets were a little too large for the CNC and I didn’t need to have an accurate sky thank you for watching and commenting.
Excuse me . I have a question about the big moon . How did you make it light?15:15 I just see the wood.
I used glow in the dark pigments that I mixed in with the epoxy so when I leave the hallway light on it, glows in the dark once they turn the lights off
Did you use the powder pigment on top of the clear epoxy or mixed with the first gray coat?
Both, I added more at the end when it was curing, for extra glow in the dark effects and depth. But also mixed it in with the grey in the first pour
@@wood_brain thank you for sharing, would you please tell me which pigments (gray and glow) specifically you used? the link shows all product available.
My wife and I are about to have our first baby and I'm planning a similar project on the ceiling of the nursery. Can you tell me your thinking of using 1/8" wood panels instead of drywall panels or foam insulation boards?
It was such a small area that I figured doing the thin plywood was easiest to maneuver however if I were to do a large space I probably would do it with a thin foam board or drywall but we definitely need extra help mounting it on the ceiling
Do you do this for a living, and if so, how much do you charge to do a loft
I create content for a living, so projects like this… unfortunately I don’t offer client work.
how do you cut out a perfect circle like that?
Slow and steady
What are the panels you mounted to the ceiling called? Trying to figure out how to look them up/ask for them at the store!
Thin osb board
@@wood_brain Thank you!
How did u measure/cut the boards to size ? Thx
I took measurements in all the corners of the ceiling and drew out my lines on the wood then cut and did a dry fit to see if anything need to be shaved down to fit.
@@wood_brain thx! Great job!
How did u arrange the holes for the star placement?
Like just randomly? Ur arrangement is the best I've seen 👌
Randomly, I was going to do specific constellations but decided against it.
@@wood_brain u just poked them randomly by eye? Looks great
@@wood_brain Why, because it would take too much time? Or because the effect would not be worth the effort?
What type of panel is that?
1/8” birch panel 2’x4’
How can we do the moon if we don’t have the machine
You could always paint it
12:43 CNC Machine. WHAT???? Okaaaaay....so much for you being an average DIYer. RINGER! How much does that machine cost again? I don't even know what that thing is.
It’s just a fancy router that hooks up to a computer
How do I do this for my bar?
Just do it in larger panels and have them all connect
What cost of this project
Around $500
1:19 If you measure like a clown, cut it down.
Once again gold 👏🏼
