You hit the nail on the head. The Mets want him back but need to mitigate the risk of him breaking down. Pete is one of my favorite players and I would love for the Mets to sign him for whatever he wants cause it’s not my money, but this is also a business and the Mets are paying him no matter what if they sign him and he falls off. I think 3/90 was a fair deal.

Its a tough set of negotiations, because pete is a fan favorite and homegrown, but stearns is treating this as a business, which is the right thing to do.Noone wants to negotiate against themselves, and mets gave a great aav offer, with i assume opt outs. I keep saying this hS to come to a head and move on, but its january now and nothing. Wondering if mets are getting closer to an ultimatum.

Truthfully, it is no one's "fault"...The METS underbid Pete last off-season by offering $158 for 7 Years, or a $22.57 mil AAV...Pete's power stats were worth more than that AAV before the 2024 season. Pete took the chance to "play for his contract" in 2024 and clearly underperformed, especially in his low RISP...However, since the 2024 season began and into this off-season, Pete's actual value is redefined by Chapman's mid-season Boras-negotiated extension with the SF Giants for $151 mil for 6 Years, and while Chapman is a first rate glove @ 3rd Base and a premium over a 1st Base player, his power stats are far below Pete's, even taking into account 2024 where Pete had 34 HRs & 88 RBIs vs. Chapman's 27 HRs & 78 RBIs...I estimate Pete is worth 105% of Chapman's deal, making Pete's AAV about $26 mil - $27 mil...Length of the deal can be somewhat "managed" through opt-outs

I think the Mets are wondering whether they should sign Alonso to a 5th year. He is 30, and will be 35 by year 5. It's a no brainer that you bring him back. The Mets need his bat. Bringing Alonso back could be the difference in the Mets winning a championship within the next 5 years or not. They could win multiple titles by holding onto Pete. That's a wise investment to make.

Fans shouldn't be alarmed by a potential Pete exit. Historically the Mets have seen many more high-profile players with a championship pedigree exit Flushing. Alonso moving on would be nothing new and not as traumatic as seeing Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan traded or Strawberry walk out the door. Pete's camp is stubborn and has failed in their attempt to convince Stearns that a long-term, big-money deal is appropriate. In time, Stearn's judgment may prove correct while Pete finishes his career elsewhere. Early in Cohen's ownership the fanbase should fall out with the mindset of building a ballclub with an All-Star at each position due to cash, elite teams have always been built with pitching, speed, and defense as the cornerstone of the franchise. Pete possesses NONE of those attributes. We have to remember that Pete's homegrown status means NOTHING to Stearns (he wasn't here) and David Stearns will remake this organization within the parameters of his philosophy. We need to add Sasaki MUCH more than Alonso. The pivot of signing Bregman and transferring Vientos across the diamond is not a bad idea. There should be concern about relocating Vientos being learning a new position defensively, albeit a corner, could hurt his bat, but it's a worthwhile risk.

I'm just wondering. You talking heads DO realize that Manfred hasn't gone full-idiot and changed the rules of the game so that it's just home run derby, don't you? You realize that even with this moronic hyper focus on home runs, major league hitters still amass far more singles that every other manner of hit combined ... don't you?
You all seem to love OPS. Do you realize OPS is just two other stats added together? What? Is a little addition too much work for you? My daughter was able to add On Base % and Slugging % in her head when she was seven.
Let me pose this incredibly taxing question to you. Runner on second, two outs. Your team is batting in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game. Who's more likely to win the game for you ... Tony Gwynn or Dave Kingman? Scoring mor runs than the other team is still how you win a baseball game and a line drive single still scores most baserunners from second base. Yet you all have bought in to the theory that batting average is meaningless. I recognize that a home run has value, but tell me this. Your third place hitter hits a home run in the first ... would you prefer a three run homer, or a solo shot? Now how many ways are there for your first two hitters to be on base when that happens? Out of those ten ways (ten if you count each type of hit individually and omit home runs as that batter would not still be on base when number three homers) ... but anyway, out of those ten ways to reach base, which way is most common? Singles! (I shouted that at you.) By emphasizing home runs, you encourage hitter to take upper cut swings this GREATLY reduces the area of possible intersection between the path of the pitched ball and the swing path of the bat, thus increasing strikeouts.
You guys are helping to bring the game down from a thinking man's game to a caveman contest with zero cerebral requirements.
I shudder to think what would have become of Keith Hernandez had he come up in today's game.

3 years at 60-75 million makes sense with NO opt out.
Why should he get an opt out when if he hits 27 home
runs and has an average of .210 and the Mets have no opt out?
I don't understand the obsession with other Mets fans

Mets should stop waisting time chasing Alonso and going for other options. Just sing Bregman move and move Vientos to 1st and get Santander before other team get him . Santander as Dh after Soto will give the power back up we need . Iglesias is cheaper to get him to 3rd Vientos to 1st Santander to DH . For crying out loud just fire David Stearn and let me take the Decision's ! 🤣🤣🤣

Pete is wanting too many years, Stearns is also a problem, yeah we got Soto, but look at the Yankees in getting Fried who we should have been all in on, Stearns is being stingy

"Stingy" implies that he's worth whatever he asks for.
Like when a toddler thinks a parent is stingy for not buying up everything in the toy Isle.
This is what I mean when I refer to "X-Box mentality.
Overpaying for 176 K's works on the X-Box because cheating and save scumming is ubiquitous.
Overpaying for a.300 SO/GIDP rate in RL mode is no bueno.
Instead of being stingy, maybe by offering "fair Market" value Stearns is hoping the guy will just take his first base mitt and go home, without having to suffer the wrath of the "Not my money" X-Box crowd?
