I don't know if it is just sentimentality or something else, but I still think Baty can become a plus-player in MLB. I guess we'll see. But it won't surprise me if he breaks through ... finally.
Episode idea: explaining some of the advanced stats that you discuss during your podcast for offense, defense, pitching etc. Love your stuff and Frankie was 🔥 today.
Happy New Year’s! I thought of an idea you guys can do. So sometime during a normal conversation, you guys will start talking about former players on previous Mets teams. I feel like you can turn this into a game or a new segment. So one of you guys can pick a random date during the season during a random year and the other person has to guess the full lineup for that days game. And you get points for every player guess correctly. So for example, Marc can find a Mets game from August 3, 2008. And James would have to guess everyone in the starting lineup for that Mets team. I think this would be fun and really good to see how good you remember previous teams. Have a good day, and hope you start feeling better James, and congratulations on Ohio State winning.
The problem I think some Mets fans have regarding Vlad is the notion that trading for him now will result in signing him for a decade. And those two things do not equate. Would it give the Mets an advantage in negotiating for Vlad if he was on the roster in '25? Sure. But it is difficult to believe he wouldn't still hit free agency, and the Mets would be one of many teams courting him. Do you give up the prospects to get him for one year? Maybe, .. if you think he's the difference between winning a WS or not. But I have to think the Mets will wait out '25 without gutting the farm system and then explore Vlad in FA after the season. It is fun to think about Vlad + Soto in NY in '25 ... but I don't know that it makes complete sense. And I certainly think it isn't something that wil happen under Stearns. I guess we'll see.
You don’t trade for Vlad without at least a very good reassuring that a long term deal is in the works. But man, Lindor, Soto, Vlad, Vientos would be a SICK 1-4 lineup.
One thing I don’t hear mentioned often is that Munetaka Murakami is set to be posted next offseason, obviously in addition to Vlad Jr being a FA. Seems like 2 guys the Mets would untimately prefer at 1B over Pete. I’m not sure Mets will budge from a maximum of 3 year deal on Pete because of this. But remains to be seen of course
On that note, the Mets are surely the best spot for Pete if he ends up taking a 1 year deal since they have a QO over his head and probably wouldn’t mind paying him a very high AAV for just 1 year
Ronny has crazy potential, although his numbers weren’t impressive we all saw the talent. I wouldn’t be against seeing a healthy Ronny getting 400 abs this year combined at dh 2nd and 3rd. Most mets fans were saying Vientos should be traded before the season started. They were also saying his defense is terrible we saw a small sample size in 23. He came back in 24 clearly improved his entire game. But we also never really saw enough of him in a wasted year because of Eppler. “Oh the advanced metrics still says Vientos sucks defensively” “Errors don’t mean anything anymore” Such a load of baloney that is spewed out on a daily basis with many of these players. He played a good third base all year long. Also sign Pete fuck all these other rumors. Another guy “O Pete’s defense sucks” “he’s declining every season” the guy hit 53 hrs his rookie season with juiced balls what did u expect him to be hitting 50 hrs a year. He has a solid glove if u wanna say his range is meh I won’t argue with that. Pete’s biggest flaws defensively are his throws too many times I’ve seen him short arm to 2nd base fucking up double plays. But guess what idc SIGN THE MAN. On paper this lineup is not much better than last years. Pete changes their entire lineup.
The best thing that could actually happen is Alonso signs elsewhere.Alonso is declining and if you want to win then it’s Vlad who should be targeted 100%.
Mauricio has a ton of upside potential. But, damn, he's been in the system for a long time and just hasn't developed plate discipline. In his brief stint with the Mets before his most recent injury, he struck out over 30% of the time and walked about 7% of the time. Get his swing and bat speed connected to meaningful plate discipline -- look out, the kid has potential. Like James said, "there are good bones there." But beyond that? It is definitely a work in progress. Do I think Mauricio could be the starting 3b for the Mets in '25? I'd give that a less than 3% chance. He's got work to do, especially coming off serious injury. I hadn't considered it before, but I actually like the Christopher Morel comp that was made here -- tantalizing talent, but a questionable ability to pull it together. I, also, have long believed that if Mauricio breaks through it will be as a corner OF. I remember a while back looking at clips of Mauricio and Jorge Soler batting, and it was almost uncanny how similar they looked at the plate (though Mauricio is a switch hitter). I like the hope that Mauricio breaks through and comes into his best self at the plate. But it is hope. Hope is not a plan.
Personally, with the current state, if McNeil is staying, I would not be surprised of they try moving Acuna to third for a flex in the meantime because his upside was very apparent. I don't feel comfortable as a fan with the lack of depth with that plan, but I would prefer him being the go-to in a worst case scenario than Baty imo, especially since if they end up picking someone up mid-season to be the official third basemen he could play 2nd as well.
I'm curious whether a "sophomore slump" is pretty common historically, because I think that's where Alvarez was last year and I'm afraid of seeing that with Vientos in '25. Now that he's on everyone's radar, pitching will adjust and the question is will he be able to compensate right away.
The best years of both Arenado and Bregman are behind them. Mets should have gone after one of these guys 5 years ago. Same with Chapman. Do you guys remember when the Mets got Canha from the A's? Chapman was still on that team at that time. Mets blew their chance at getting the best defensive 3B on the planet at that time, and if they had done that we probably would not be talking about Baty today. Nowadays, the Mets have a log jam of infield prospects, and I'm not convinced that Baty is worth keeping.
You guys are great, by the way, but I don't know if you have covered a topic that has been bugging the shit out of me -- and that is -- Francisco Alvarez. Can you do a dive into his struggles and let us know what you think the future is for him? I've been a Mets fan for 55 years and I've seen a lot of players. He is, hands down, one of the most undisciplined hitters I have seen in my life. He had a decent rookie season and, in my opinion, it seems to have gone to his head. He swings from the heels on every pitch, looking to elevate the ball and hit it a mile. He is almost an automatic out because he gets HIMSELF out. He gets himself in the hole and then he's a sitting duck. And his defense, never great, also seemed to take a tumble along with his hitting in 2024. I do not, for the life of me, understand why the Mets haven't sat him down and had a come to Jesus talk with him. At a minimum, they should consider bringing in another catcher to, if not compete with him, at least give him something to think about. He really got a pass last year, probably based off his success in 2023 and the fact that they needed him to focus on working with the pitchers. But the Mets cannot go through another year with him hitting 8th and swinging from the heels on EVERY FUCKING pitch. Your thoughts gentlemen?
Although you are relatively correct about his year offensively. He has the offensive tools to be a difference maker in the lineup, being the fortifying force in the back if the lineup. Now where you are completely dismissing his value is defensively and leadership with the pitchers. The difference between when he catches vs anyone else is very sizable.

Agree on every point. He was the biggest disappointment of all Mets both offensively and defensively last year.
I think it’s Alonso or vlad. Mets fans will be pissed if we lose Alonso but getting vlad instead might make up for it. A future of Vientos, Soto and vlad is to nuts not to consider. 3 25 year old studs.
I think even if Baty makes a step i don't think he moves the needle. Best case with Baty he's. 250 15 hr 320obp. Him playing every day will only happen if there's an injury bc the Mets will sign Pete or Bregman and probably someone like Winker. The likely starting lineup is 1) Lindor SS 2) Soto RF 3) Vientos 3b 4) Pete 1b 5) Nimmo LF 6) Marte / Winker DH (maybe Ty France) 7) Alvy 8) Acuna JR / Jeff 2b 9) Siri/Taylor/Gilbert CF or Nimmo in CF to get Marte/Winker/Soto in the lineup at the same time Baty isn't getting a real chance until there's an injury. He has gotten chances and Vientos beat him for the job with less chances to get the job. Expecting him to take the step to everyday big league player when he isn't going to get a couple week stretch of starting without an injury isn't likely.
The fact that so many Met "fans" favor bringing Alonso back at all costs will in the end result in another off-season for the ball club! He is worth what the Met organization is willing to pay and no more...he may be a fan favorite, but he is not GREAT enough for the money he demands. We have hit the jackpot with Juan Soto and we need some bat to hit behind him in the lineup who CAN hit...or his years will be wasted here until his 5 year contract out clause...we cannot wait around for Alonso and his pride to defeat this team!
Yes, there is a good player in Batty but it’s with another team. He cannot deal with the pressure at the Major league level with the New York Mets. I believe he will do well with another team and fans shouldn’t be upset about that because he will never be able to be that player with us.
Do u think the Mets would trade Baty Clifford McNeil Blackburn for Luis Castillo . The Mariners need a 3B 1B They always loved McNeil and they get a lesser starter to replace Castillo
Is Jeff that much of a butcher at 3rd? I’m thinking Vientos to first, Jeff to third, Acuña to second, if Baty doesn’t pan out (I’m also still a Baty believer).
I think you and I are the only people who still think he can play. His floor is a utility player with power. Good utility players are costing 3-4 million a year while Baty will only cost 800,000 a year. The one young player I'd be willing to trade is Mauricio. His defense is subpar, and while he can hit home runs, his overall hit tool isn't that great.
When baty came up his swing remi ded me of conforto's (which i liked) BUT baty needs to get out of nyc for some reason , gett'm to reds/low key team and wish jim all good vibes.but not here. Lfgm alld all night
Enough is enough ..... For Alonso, anything greater than 3 is questionable but 9 years is insane .... look at all the Mets "prospects" and ask yourself, where are they going to play? Nimmo and Soto are OF locks for the next several years .... Lindor is a lock at SS .... Vientos is at least a DH (if not 3B or 1B) for the foreseeable future ..... if Acuna and Williams are likely 2B or CF where does that leave Clifford, Gilbert, Mauricio and Parada. Time to utilize these assets and go for Vladdy, tell Pete to take a hike and lock up 1B (Vladdy) and 3B or DH (Vientos) for the long term ..... Lindor(SS)-Soto(RF)-Vlad (1B)-Vientos (DH)-Alvarez (C)- Bregman or Arenado (3B)-Nimmo (LF)-Acuna/Williams (2B)-Siri/Taylor (CF) is an awesome lineup ..... Pitching and Bullpen will still be achilles heals but addressable. I wish Stern would stop screwing around and lock this roster down.
If you could buy him for what’s he’s worth ,and sell him for what he thinks he’s worth ! It would be like buying a million ducks for one dollar a duck ! Sell them for two dollars a duck and you could pocket a quick million!!
I would more than graciously accept a world in which Pete Alonso does not come back if that world features a trade for Vlad Guerrero Jr and then he signs a big contract extension. Otherwise, Mets should keep Pete.
Is Clifford ready for first base?? Alonso is ok at defense, been declining for the last 2 seasons, he's thinking too highly of himself, should have taken his extension, the 90 million offer for 3 years with opt outs after the first and second years was fair, make him prove his worth, I'd personally would let him walk
Of the guys they threw out there, I'd take Diaz over Rizzo and Arraez all day long. Yandy has some pop and decent BA/OBP. You could do a lot worse than Diaz. Diaz is a much better option than Torkelson, imo.
Arraez would be a very good bat in the lineup because he's a hitting machine. He's a butcher on the field but you make him a DH and bat him in the lead off spot and then either trade for Arenado or sign Bregman. If he's ready for spring training Mauricio should be given a shot at third base.
@@sheldonforman72 I think the problem with Arraez is that despite being a "hitting machine," he has no power and his OBP isn't all that much higher than his BA. Plus, as you mentioned, he's a "butcher" in the field. He's not the worst player you could plug in at 1b, but he doesn't move the needle a whole lot for me.
The problem is that he has no trade value, so the Mets would essentially be giving him away. And as much as he's failed at the MLB level, he has continued to be good in the minors. I think the most sensible move is to hold onto him and give him a shot (last shot?) in the spring, then go on from there. If some team was willing to give up a comparable prospect just to give both guys a change of scenery ... okay, give it a go.
I think there is still too much potential to just chuck him. He can play multiple positions and has 20+ home run power. Don't forget, he only played 50 games at the big league level last year. He hit everywhere in the lineup except for the sixth spot. In 22 at-bats,he only got 1 hit. Give him a chance to play in the spring and bat him 8th or 9th.
If I gave any baseball fan from 2023 a time machine and they heard all the hype about Vlad Jr in 2024 they would probably have a heart attack. Im not sure how one season turned around his career but the hype behind him is insane. In 2023 people wanted to throw Vlad jr into the trash and this year he improved his homers by 4 and rbi by 9 while playing 3 more games and people want to give him $500 million. He is not him. Sorry but hes not. In his 6 seasons you can easily see hes had 3 meh seasons and 3 good seasons. Ima gonna be honest Vlad is lazy. He shows all the signs of a lazy athlete. He takes a season off then he has a good one when he needs to ask for more money. He barely speaks english despite living and being born in canada. Also if the Blue jays are so desperate to sign players why not offer Vlad jr a massive contract? Hes a home grown guy. The biggest sign Vlad is a fraud is the team he was drafted by doesnt want to sign him despite going after others with massive offers. Maybe Ohtani didnt pick the blue jays because he knew Vlad was a slug.
If any Mets fan is saying trading for Vlad Jr is dumb or they shouldn’t do it don’t fully comprehend that the Mets legitimately have only 2 positions that aren’t locked up long term which is 2B & CF Mets have way to many prospects that can play in both positions the last thing the Mets need to do is watch there prospects decline in value like Baty did and they end up being throw ins sell high. Stop prospect hugging keep the 2 guys the Mets see that have an actual chance to be on this roster in 2025 and contribute or the next season get rid of the rest for Vlad Jr. Y’all are also overrating what it would take to trade for Vlad Jr by the way in reality it probably takes Megill, Jett, Clifford, Mauricio/Baty, and a lower level SP prospect like a Tidwell or Tong.
I don't know if it is just sentimentality or something else, but I still think Baty can become a plus-player in MLB. I guess we'll see. But it won't surprise me if he breaks through ... finally.

@ Then don’t trade for Vlad, because he’s definitely hitting FA.
The guy in the beard said we weren't getting Soto.
So did Steve Cohen.
I can see a breakout season for Baty
good job fellas, love frankie peppers at the end, 1st time I heard him

Ya mama’s declining.
How many times have we said, "team x needs to hand over a ton to team y" but it doesn't pan out that way (ex. The Crochet deal).
a lot xD

You know the Angels are not really interested when the report comes from John Heyman, the mouthpiece for Boras
I heard recently that Lucas Duda was making a comeback to MLB. Seems like a natural fit for the Mets at 1b. I say roll those dice!
No thanks ..
snow day edition ⚾
I'm curious whether a "sophomore slump" is pretty common historically, because I think that's where Alvarez was last year and I'm afraid of seeing that with Vientos in '25. Now that he's on everyone's radar, pitching will adjust and the question is will he be able to compensate right away.
Oh its definitely a thing. Pitchers adjust and the hitter must also. Chess match. A MLB career is full of adjustments year to year.
The best years of both Arenado and Bregman are behind them. Mets should have gone after one of these guys 5 years ago. Same with Chapman. Do you guys remember when the Mets got Canha from the A's? i would like the Mets to go for Murakami or Guerrero next year just use Vientos as a stop gap.
Every time a new team poos up, I think boras called a reporter. 😂
You guys are great, by the way, but I don't know if you have covered a topic that has been bugging the shit out of me -- and that is -- Francisco Alvarez. What do you guys think about signing James Karinchak?
He has made it clear he doesn't want to play here. Let's start planning without him

Keep Vientos at 3B. A little bit of quality defensive coaching will go a long way with this guy.
IF The Mets sign Anthony Rizzo for 1 year, we could probably blame Mendoza for that.
Yes, there is a good player in Batty but it’s with another team. He cannot deal with the pressure at the Major league level with the New York Mets. I believe he will do well with another team and fans shouldn’t be upset about that because he will never be able to be that player with us.

The Mets offering Pete the 3 yr deal, tells me they're not in on Vlad. The Yankees signing Goldschmidt to one year, is a play for Vlad
Yankees lol
Baty was terrible defensively. If he is playing third base on Opening Day it means something went horribly wrong.
If you could buy him for what’s he’s worth ,and sell him for what he thinks he’s worth !

Arreaz could hit 380 in nyc thou🗽🇺🇲⚾️
I think Baty needs to be traded. Maybe playing in NY rattles him and he needs to go to a low market team where there isn't as much pressure.
Brett Baty ? Stop it. Package him with some other guys in a trade for a pitcher.
Peter
Just go after Anthony Santander
I’m very disappointed at Alonso
If he loves New York and the fans he would stay here, but he have a agent that is all about money so,we’ll wait and see ⚾️⚾️⚾️🤔🤔🤔🤐🤐🤐😴😴😴
American League = AAAA
Tommy Pham 🐐💪
Hopefully the Mets and Alonso get back together. Lifetime contract, $500K per HR, team opt-out if he hits
Any trade for Vlad will start with either Brandon Sproat or Mark Vientos.
