What is insane is that France and napoleon were only defending themselves from these shitty coalitions. They declared war on France. Not the other way around. Huge respect to France that was in total war in the whole world and still manage to kick their arse for 14 years. For exemple Germany hold only 5 years during WW2
14 ? It took Europe 23 years to truly defeat France (Russian disaster)! If I'm not mistaken, Napoléon suffered his first large defeat at Essling. It took the coalition ten years to inflict even one defeat to him.
4 years and there are 2 years where germans were only in nothern France. And allies (France, Russia, great Bretain, USA) occuped germany during 4 years. It's the same thing and we can't say "lol Germany always surrender lol".
I hate it when media uses La Marseillaise to represent the Napoleonic era, and they've been doing it since at least the 1840s. La Marseillaise was never accepted by the Napoleonic regime and was actually banned under it a few times.
La Marseillaise was banned under the imperial monarchy as the First Empire but you could hear it in the military march, also the Chant du départ is a republican anthem and this anthem was legal.
We are brothers since Napoléon III actively supported Romanian union (before it was Transylvania + Wallachia + Bucovina kingdoms if I remember well) and participated directly to its creation. Noroc !
The fact that they actually declared war on Napoleon himself instead of France just shows how much of a badass he is (and obviously they didnt declare war on *HIM* in the early stages..)
Actually, this was just to feed the propaganda that Napoleon was a tyrant, even on his own people, which was obviously false. The French deeply loved him, even monarchists who were furious against him and wanted the old regime back preferred him over some others. As an old peasant said to a french historian at that time: "Well the Republic doesn't really bother me, as long as Napoleon is King of France." 😂😂🤣 It was mix between a Monarchy and a Republic, so it became an empire lol.
The utmost respect for the French, especially at the time of the First Empire. You attempted to free my country many times from tyrannical rule and your efforts have not gone unthanked for. L'independence de Irlande

For those who do not understand why this song speaks of a republic while being the anthem of the Empire, it is quite simply because in reality the republic exists while being a monarchy. Napoleon I was "the Protector Emperor of the Republic" or "the Emperor of the Republic."
This how they sold it at the time for a while (before the term "republic" be banished before the end of the first empire), but modern historiography rightfully consider the republic over when Napoleon proclamed himself emperor.
The lyrics as well as the song also precede the Empire, being initially used as a companion piece to La Marseillase, before becoming the National Anthem since the first one was seen as subversive
it is said that France is among the countries who had the best war leaders of all times : Clovis, Charlemagne, Phillipe Auguste, Bertrand du Guesclin, Joan of Arc, Lafayette, Napoleon, Charles de Gaulle... and I probably forgot others

I am a French Republican and like a very large majority of French people I have respect for Napoleon. those who say he was a tyrant do not understand the history of France
Ironically, I'm French too and every history teacher except the english one hated Napoleon. Whilst it's true that Napoleon did many great things, he also did many terrible things (slavery and sexism comes to mind, sadly). So, I wouldn't love Napoleon, but I wouldn't hate him either. He was a leader that inspired and conquered, terrorised and subjugated.
Well Napoleon IS a tyrant, however a tyrant doesnt necessarly mean everything he did was bad, he doesnt really deserve sympathy for his worst decision but respect? The man managed to crush the balance of power in europe in a single decade, managed to reach and enter moscow and btw unlike the polish who were closer and the reich who had much more advanced technology and supply (and couldntt even occupy the city in the end), yet France was on the other side of europe with "allies" that werent fully loyal, a second front in spain, and with crappy logistic, like russia made sure not to leave any supply and bringing supply from france to russia on horseback is not ideal

Me when all of europe declared war on napoleon himself
As French speaker. Thank you for respecting France and it's History.
No? France declared war first and kept expanding. The rest of Europe started "declaring war" to get its lands back.
I hate it when media uses La Marseillaise to represent the Napoleonic era, and they've been doing it since at least the 1840s. La Marseillaise was never accepted by the Napoleonic regime and was actually banned under it a few times.
Besides this song is way cooler anyway.
La Marseillaise was banned under the imperial monarchy as the First Empire but you could hear it in the military march, also the Chant du départ is a republican anthem and this anthem was legal.

Actually, this was just to feed the propaganda that Napoleon was a tyrant, even on his own people, which was obviously false.
The French deeply loved him, even monarchists who were furious against him and wanted the old regime back preferred him over some others.
As an old peasant said to a french historian at that time: "Well the Republic doesn't really bother me, as long as Napoleon is King of France." 😂😂🤣

For those who do not understand why this song speaks of a republic while being the anthem of the Empire, it is quite simply because in reality the republic exists while being a monarchy. Napoleon I was "the Protector Emperor of the Republic" or "the Emperor of the Republic."
Ou comme dirait Napoléon un Corse peut fare gober n'importe quoi à un Français
This how they sold it at the time for a while (before the term "republic" be banished before the end of the first empire), but modern historiography rightfully consider the republic over when Napoleon proclamed himself emperor.
The lyrics as well as the song also precede the Empire, being initially used as a companion piece to La Marseillase, before becoming the National Anthem since the first one was seen as subversive
@@2adamast
oui un Corse peut faire gober n'importe quoi à un Français si il s'appelle Napoléon Bonaparte

it is said that France is among the countries who had the best war leaders of all times : Clovis, Charlemagne, Phillipe Auguste, Bertrand du Guesclin, Joan of Arc, Lafayette, Napoleon, Charles de Gaulle... and I probably forgot others
Louis XIV fought against Europe many times and won, which lead to place his cousin in Spain throne. Phillipe 1er invaded England in 1066. Richelieu managed to restore France's dignity after the bad ending of François 1er

Bien dit
Ironically, I'm French too and every history teacher except the english one hated Napoleon.
Whilst it's true that Napoleon did many great things, he also did many terrible things (slavery and sexism comes to mind, sadly).
So, I wouldn't love Napoleon, but I wouldn't hate him either.
He was a leader that inspired and conquered, terrorised and subjugated.
th-cam.com/video/S9xaoIMMcd8/w-d-xo.html
Well Napoleon IS a tyrant, however a tyrant doesnt necessarly mean everything he did was bad, he doesnt really deserve sympathy for his worst decision but respect? The man managed to crush the balance of power in europe in a single decade, managed to reach and enter moscow and btw unlike the polish who were closer and the reich who had much more advanced technology and supply (and couldntt even occupy the city in the end), yet
France was on the other side of europe with "allies" that werent fully loyal, a second front in spain, and with crappy logistic, like russia made sure not to leave any supply and bringing supply from france to russia on horseback is not ideal
It's funny that he did many things against women and slave's rights but he gived to his sisters some crowns😂
