Mersk shipping company has broken the current contract agreement of not adding automation. They put automation in a port down south. This is why the unions have backed out of negotiation talks. They are breaking the current contract.
All usmx has to do is take out any automation in the new contract. The raise they propose is 40% over 6 years. The union wants more to fall in line with poor raises over the last contract ( 6 years). That raise amount is an easy fix. Health plan is an easy fix. Container bonuses is another negotiable fix as is retirement funding. Automation and the elimination of American jobs is NOT !!!!
My neighbor is a Longshoreman in NJ. He said the strike is definitely on to start 10/1. He told me that each week they are on strike will cause 4-6 week shipping delays. He's hoping the strike won't last for more than a few days.
I did intermodal out of NJ/NY.. I knew after last year it was time to get out.. glad I left for dedicated OTR in February... Sad to see something that ran steady get so convoluted
The ILA tried to start this process 2 years ago and the USMX did not want to discuss anything seriously. Everyone should realize that ILA labor is less that 1% of shipping cost. The cause of inflation is a direct result of the shipping rates that were charged during Covid by these overseas shipping lines. There are no American lines that we negotiate with and they should absolutely take care of the hard working Americans that load and unload their cargo.

Jobs are not for citizens. The third world “asylum seekers” need to feed their families. Review the government’s own job statistics and see where the jobs are going. The sad thing is union workers keep voting for their own demise.

Yelp sucks its be crap last 2 years. Every time got a good amount saved gotta use some. Especially with parts being 3x the price and crap anymore. Luck I got things I can do for money.
The percentage impacted could be a good bit more than 51%. The tonnage slide you showed says the only Gulf Coast port represented there is Houston. So that's not taking New Orleans, Mobile, Tampa, or any of the smaller ports.
the government will step in and, do the sa,e thing they did with the railroad workers. you guys are good. the news is alway trying to make things look scary.
I'm in ILA 1459. The auto gate system causes more problems then fixes. Plus we haven't had an increase in available jobs for the gate but it has tripled in flow in the last 17 years
One thing I don't hear mentioned is the fact that this is an international effort so you're going to have ports globally going on strike it doesn't only pertain to America
The rail workers had the country by the balls last year, and they folded so fast. When i see the strike and containers piling up, then i believe the union is serious

I export containers for a living out of CHS and SAV. Customers have been freaking out about this for the last 3 months. Hopefully ILA and USMX figure this out. Based on some of the videos I have seen from the ILA president, I think we are going to have a strike.
Incorrect. Everything is working better than average in the U.S except the gas line & grid in TX. Thanks to Biden's Infrastructure Bill. Every natural disaster is promptly addressed & Feds/FEMA on deck. And no $$$ withheld for CA wildfires bc of political vendettas, either.
As a truck driver I experienced how unproductive and lazy some of these union longshoremen can be. It shouldn't take 6 hours to go into the port to get a container thats supposed to already be off the ship. Too many lunch breaks, smoke breaks, talking, and not working. If Automation will make getting a container out of the ports a 2 hour at most process the truck drivers will welcome it.
I live in Southern California and the major inport/ exporters are just waiting to cash in on just such problems. I don't hold my breath as far and Federal Government acting appropriately 😮

We did it by identifying meals that were very, vety frugal where the ingredients could be stored long-term. We store the ubiquitous beans, rice, sprouting seeds, vegetable seeds, canned vegetables, flour, masa for tortillas, natural peanut butter, and canned fish first, then we keep adding salt, spices, vinegar, sugar, honey, healthy oils, nuts, popcorn, and other staples to have a more varied diet. Sitting here in the American Midwest, just north of Chicago, I’m wondering how this will impact not just the coasts but the interior waterways. I started seriously following this channel when the Canadians were about to go on strike to see the impact it might have on the Chicago/Calumet City port of the St. Lawrence seaway system. I found the channel around the time of the Suez Canal blockage and started watching almost daily since the Dali/Frances Scott Key Bridge collapse. It’s amazing the impact global shipping has on our lives even if we aren’t always aware of the factors at play. I appreciate Sal explaining this industry, its past, present and potential future in impacts on our daily lives. My question: with East Coast shipping at a standstill, how will goods move to the interior of the US? I’m assuming with the port of NY closed containers won’t be offloaded to smaller ships that can travel through the St. Lawrence Seaway system and since New Orleans also part of the ILA strike the Mississippi will have the same issue. Trucking from the West coast won’t be at scale. Budgets are already tight for the upcoming quarter leading towards the holidays and end of the year so just another hit to the economy we don’t need. I really do hope the current administration has a plan, even if it isn’t being shared with the public, to pressure both sides to go back to the negotiating table.
This was a great description of the real crisis at hand…! Now that I clearly understand that this strike would affect my deliveries of aged rum from Costa Rica but ALSO my supply of reserve Port wines from Portugal this negotiation must be brought to a successful conclusion !

Thank you for all your work and keeping us informed on these major issues! Wish the main stream media would actually focus on important things like this, instead of useless distractions.
They want it to be a surprise.
Many will be caught flat footed. I feel bad for those that would like to get ready but can’t because of the economy.
Of course they will automate 😂
I'm a container hauler out of Chicago and we are already struggling to make it. This strike will leave us dead in the water.

We already are.
Break the Unions or form another Labor Movement.
My neighbor is a Longshoreman in NJ. He said the strike is definitely on to start 10/1. He told me that each week they are on strike will cause 4-6 week shipping delays.
He's hoping the strike won't last for more than a few days.
Thanks for the information

But even as a far away German with no clue about ship stuff - I feel this is going to be a big thing.
It is not only about wages - the 'automation' thing is severe for workers. This fight is in near future.

I made money during strikes by buying empty containers. Buy low, sell high. Or work chicken boats. This was in Charleston.

Because of your excellent reporting of this issue I’ll let you know what we will work…. Cruise Vessels and military vessels….That’s it!
Particular Ports on the gulfcoast are already preping to barricade entry into the port. Its the talk of the town.
The percentage impacted could be a good bit more than 51%. The tonnage slide you showed says the only Gulf Coast port represented there is Houston. So that's not taking New Orleans, Mobile, Tampa, or any of the smaller ports.

As a truck driver I experienced how unproductive and lazy some of these union longshoremen can be. I appreciate Sal explaining this industry, its past, present and potential future in
impacts on our daily lives.
