Attack+ replace with Expert+ (everyone has it) and replace 2 expert decos with 2 attack decos (silver melding ticket can give these if you're never lucky)
I think a VERY important detail to note about this strategy is the critical distancing of the special scope attachment. As someone who's knew to the heavy bowgun, I was unaware of the optimal distance for the special scope so my numbers were always off and I couldn't be consistent with the stun lock. I copied the build to the T but my numbers were always off. After many many many many failed attempts and stressful moments, i realized I was too close at times so I wasn't getting consistent results. I thought the closer yu were the better but that is not the case with the special scope. Hopefully this saves others from pulling their hair out. I've lost all of mine already with this monster.
From watching you, it seems the stun threshold is around 1500. Very useful information. Know your weapon damage per hit for each move, sequence a set of moves to bring to under 1400 or so. You got yourself a stun lock for every weapon. Thanks Cons
As a long time veteran of Monster Hunter, I gotta say, (and there are a few monsters in world where this applies to) if the only way people want to fight your monster without pulling their hair out is to keep it from moving entirely, ya done messed up.
Keep it clean though stuff like this really shouldn't go out it's a speedrunners secret once this gets out more then MH will be about stun lock city . We dont want it to the point where stun is either happening to most monsters or stun gets nerfed like flash pods in a huge way no cars too much about them !
How would they fix it though? The wind aura is basically kushala's entire shtick. The fact that's its also the part everyone hates makes fixing the fight basically impossible.

Highly informative as ever. Dude seriously you need more subs, easily the best MHW/IB channel in all of TH-cam. I mean come on, you even provided a macro AFK strat for coal farming way back when!
Another easy way is to use a thunder bow (I prefer Kjarr bow) with full safi set, Bolt V, evade extender 3(a comfy skill), bow charge +(preferbly you want this but its alright without), crit eye 4, crit boost 3, health boost 3. Just dodge her attack and do a charge normal shot + 1 spread shot and repeat. The window for attacking and dodging is perfect for bows, makes kudhala perfect for training how to use bow!! Just make sure to aim for the head or tail!! You should be able to clear her in 5 mins.
Kushala's such a headache because it's weakness to poison isn't the same as the old games. Kushala was hella easy once someone brought a poison weapon to nullify the wind pressure. Now it's just ridiculous. Nice video, but I prefer to stunlock it with a Charge Blade Loop >:D!
I'm trying this but the special scope is just so miserable. Maybe it's a matter of getting used to it? I feel like I can't see well enough to line up my shots and even when I manage that it seems like my damage is much lower, I'm guessing because her head isn't at the right range for the special scope to function (I have it set to closest range). I'm guessing this won't do enough damage to knock her down without that though, right? Does partbreaker affect how quickly shooting her in the head will stagger her?
I realize that "quickscoping" when kushala is moving and "hardscoping" when she's down is the most bearable for me. Sorry for the COD terms LOL. This seems much less miserable to me than trying to track her moving through the scope on ps4.
you can drop the scope, just run more dps skills and stuff. maybe drop the kirin set for something more efficient to make up the difference. someone in our discord server also hates the scope and said they used this guide and made a set that locked without the scope!
This is still better for people who know how to play Hbg into Kushala with spread, but I'm sure it'll work once I actually figure out how to stop fainting all the time
@@AngelicRequiemX yeah zin hbg was in base iceborne the best spread hbg. The meta sets are easy to craft but nobody explains the tactic behind flinch hunting or how to start easily
When this event dropped I didn't think it was so bad, but after a few days I'm back to thinking Kush is probably the worst thing in the game, especially for a melee user. It's so terrible, the ai is erratic at best and unless you lock it down it farts about up in the sky being generally obnoxious lol. So thanks for this, might hang up my sns for a bit and start blasting it in the face :) Kush actually has me looking forward to Luna (what am I saying...?)

@@ConsOA It is possible, yeah - I've seen a couple of sns players do it with a falling bash/Perfect Rush combo but Kush is so wiggly during his topples and I am constantly forgetting to keep count of his thresholds ^^ Let's be honest, I just want to let off steam by shooting it in its stupid face lol

If you want to push your dps a little and are waiting after the 5/6 shots to the head you can pop a couple shots into the forelegs, they have a decent shot hitzone and have a separate flinch (topple) counter. The leg flinch is the same priority as the head, so it wont mess up your lock, but all the extra shots are free damage and make for shorter hunts. also if the scope makes your head spin you can drop it and just do 7/8 shots. its a 30% buff though, so dropping it will make your hunts a lot longer for sure. likewise you can run the build with "Loyal thunder" if you don't have access to Safi, but your going to have to adjust your count a bit. the great part of this video is Cons shows the why not just the how, so you can repeat this process with any weapon. :D iirc "Great luck" works by increasing the number of boxes awarded at the end of the hunt (though no idea how many), and each of those boxes has the ~10% chance to add a Sealed feystone (8% 1 sealed, 1% 3x). Depending on the number of extra boxes rolled your looking at a significant number more of the extra feystones. Ballpark i'd say that the quest average is 4 sealed per run, and 5 sealed per great luck run, so with a set as braindead as Spread 3 there really isn't any reason not to run Great luck.
@@ReviaTheStarf how many CR mods? and what dmg skills are you stacking? the scope is a flat 30%, so you shouldn't see a drop to below 30 if you were hitting in the 40s. I don't mean to insult you, but do you see you view change when you aim with and without scope? the odd thing about the scope is it needs to be equipped each hunt (2:07), so new players to bowguns don't realize and think its just a flat buff. either way your damage should go up with the scope. (your 29 should be 37-38 scoped)

It’s always the same story. “This is soooo easy.” And then I make the exact same build, and none of the behaviors observed in the video actually happen. I do less damage per pellet, and it takes 8 perfect hits to knock it down, which means if I have any stray pellets I have to reload, and it leaps up and spins away from me or launches up in the air where it can’t be shot. It doesn’t just stand there looking at me waiting for me to shoot it a couple of extra times in the face.
just make a higher dps set then? im literally running kirin here, you could easily swap out for like safi with resentment, or anything with better dps skills, and get a bunch more dps to make the lock more consistent? and during the spin move where it flies, it literally holds its head still for like 1.5 seconds. If it's spamming that, it literally is standing still waiting for you to shoot it
Cons OA I’ll give it a try. I guess Safi will help. I wasn’t really thinking I could do a lot better than full crit eye full attack and full max might. Turns out Where I’m losing DPS to your set is that I don’t have attack augments on the gun. 🙄 And you’re right, I get a shot on him while he flexes before taking off, but the reload is murdering me. Anyway, thanks for the reply and sorry for the salt. I can beat this jerk all day with hammer but it’s annoying and takes too long. I tried out your set last night when I should have been sleeping. I was thinking I’d grab a couple of quick runs and I wound up spending an hour getting my ass handed to me trying to get it right.

Attack augs help, use food buffs, run either safi with max resentment or not safi with peak performance (so swap out the shitty kirin pieces for something more skill efficient and use the extra space for peak perf, maybe use two brachy for agi secret, maybe even drop jang for agi secret AND run safi with resentment, tho youd be forced to maintain rage mode to benefit from the agi, etc Theres a ton of options. I just got to MR 100 and don't have the stuff to augment or max out. What I did was use fortify. I wear only my fortify piece on first and second lives then equip full set and eat. It's an easy one slot huge attack boost

Lets say I dont have this safi HBG, what other alternatives are there? I never used any HBG in MH games.. I'm slightly concerned about the bow gun recoil tho..
if you don't have attack+4 jewel you can just slot attack1 instead and use expert+4 which I'm pretty sure you get one of in story. If you have both but not stonethrower/expert you can use those and put stonethrower in the 1 slots instead. just simple stuff idk why I'm typing this
Tbh any set can work, it's just a matter of working out the damage threshholds. Using agi 7 and resentment with Safi will give you the option to get to x2 the threshold and get a flinch, while doing way more damage in the process
You guys can run a stronger set for multiplayer if you use Zinogre/Stygian HBG with attack and affinity mods Kulve alpha head (instant 3 free element/ammo) Kirin alpha head Kirin beta arms Kirin beta waist Kulve beta legs Spare shot charm The only special decos you need are and expert+, Critical/Vitality or tenderizer/Vitality But you can end the set with Kirin Divinity Guts Spare shot Spread 2 Weakness 3 Expert 7 Critical 3 Health boost 3 Free element/ammo 3 Weakning its tail and shooting there in multiplayer is easier to hit and more likely to dish out a lot of damage vs fighting for head shots against 3 other people of you don't want to solo this
VERY noob question. I see you eat for slugger? Does slotting slugger if you have room helps more than damage there? For example. I can fit easily 1 point of slugger or peak performance on top of you current build. What would be the best?
yup, just put more dps on the set if you can and try it, it'll probably take an extra shot or two to down it though. also you can drop kirin completely and make a way more powerful set to make up the difference
i think it's specifically for this lock, tho really you dont need the scope for it in regular play, i suspect people will go back to shield spread HBG, although i always found that really boring
@@ConsOA True but for most monsters I think shield gives a safe way to play. So that you don't die in one or two hits. But the way you position, it shows how good a player you are.

I still don't understand bowguns dude. I have damn near max crit chance, critical boost 3, attack boost 7, spread shot 2, and I'm using Stygian HBG, but I'm doing only about 25 damage per pellet, while you're doing well over 40. I even tried using special scope but that seems to be way too hard on controller. I even tried to implement partbreaker (it affects the topple threshold) into the build because I couldn't reach the threshold before Kushala gets up. I'm standing in range, so what am I doing wrong?
Have you added close ranged mods to the HBG? I'm also not sure if stygian is the right HBG to use or if normal zin is better, I can't check atm but might be worth looking into. fwiw I play on controller, and if you line it up properly, I find this easier on controller than on kb/m. But also, this is easily doable without the scope so don't worry about that too much. It's also possible you're overdoing the threshold? It's unrelated to why you're getting less damage than me, but even at 25 per pellet, it should still be a consistent stunlock. Wait a tiny bit after kushala gets up, before shooting your shot, as the knocked-down state lasts a little longer than it appears and if you do enough damage to knockdown again during it, you just go back to the start. I explain how to find out the right number of shots in the vid, so be sure to make sure you're following it. Also eat for atk up food if you aren't already, I guess. not sure what else it could be, let me know how it goes
@@ConsOA I can take a look at the regular zinogre hbg. I had an overlay installed, so I could see the hp of Kushala's head (the topple threshold). I was consistently one or two shots short of the theshold. I've had this issue (low damage) with pretty much any bowgun build I've tried other than stickies, so I know there's _something_ I've always done wrong. I had three close range mods and two recoil suppressors to get the recoil to low. I also tested it with normal recoil so This is the closest I've gotten to having a bowgun build that worked other than the mindless lbg sticky build that I used to net my first Master Rank Kulve Taroth kill. I googled the Zinogre HBG and the stygian HBG just now. I only have the first stygian HBG at the moment, but its stats were seemingly identical to the final level of the Zinogre HBG. 420 base attack, 6 spread 3 ammo capacity, normal recoil +2. According to the database I'm looking at though, the stygian one takes two recoil suppressors to get to low recoil, so maybe that's where I'm going wrong. That would only net me one extra close range mod though, so I still don't see that being enough. I'm sure there's got to be something fundamental that I'm missing but I can't figure it out. You're able to double over the threshold and yet I struggle to hit it once. I've been playing this game a heck of a lot today (plus it's Christmas Eve) so I'm not going to mess with this anymore today, but I'll investigate some more later. Decoration grinding is something I've put off for a long time but I just beat Alatreon within the last week (thanks for the guides) and I think it would benefit me quite a bit if I could get some more convenient decorations before I try to take down Fatalis.
@@Zebo12345678 Thanks for the detailed explanation of your issue. Unfortunately, the additional close range mod probably isn't going to make the difference. And the two HBG's seem too similar for that to be the issue, then. Really weird. It might be a positioning thing. Keep an eye on my damage numbers when I first start the kushala hunt. youtube compression makes it a little hard to see, but I think they're varying from 29 through to like 35 depending on where I'm standing, and non-crits are worse. Keep in mind that kushala takes more damage once it enters rage mode too, maybe 20~30%? I don't know the modifier off the top of my head. iirc special scope at proper crit distance adds about 30% to your damage per shot, and an additional close range will probably only add 5%, maybe 10%. I'd advise you test these various mechanics on the training pole when you want to see how alterations affect your damage output. Between these you *might* be able too account for the bulk of the difference, but you're probably positioning well so maybe not. Hard to say to be sure The other way to help make up for lowered DPS is to eat might seed/mega demondrug/demon powder. These help a bit, and agitator + tenderising can also up the numbers, if you're willing to accept less consistency (you're using an overlay, so that should be a decent compromise, unless you plan on turning the overlay off once you've worked out what the problem is). As I mention and as I'm sure you already know, me running the kirin set here is completely unnecessary. So feel free to run whatever set you like to help fit more dps skills into the set The only last thing I can inquire about, is if reloading is causing a bottleneck for your dps? Make sure you're running free element on the set (it's a dual skill, free element on blades and ammo up on guns) to increase the clip size to 8. You can also sun spareshot if you think firing more shots before reloading would help you edge out enough dps to get the knockdown. Sorry I can't give any advice specifically for the damage number issue, I'm stumped. Good luck with your testing when you get around to it! Keep me posted when you do ^^
@@ConsOA So remember that overlay I was using? Well I actually took a look at what the dps of that set was and it is actually ridiculously high. Sure I have low damage compared to _you_ but I really underestimated how strong spread heavy bowgun is! I've successfully completed my first Daora hunt. You were absolutely right, the extra ammo capacity was far more important than I thought. I thought that extra attack boost would have been better than the ammo up since you already have pretty high ammo in a heavy bowgun and the reload speed isn't all that bad. Turns out I was just wrong. That extra ammo was a big deal! As for my actual run, it took about 9 and a half minutes, and I _did_ overshoot the threshold a couple times (mistimed the last shot mostly). I was using peak performance because I had a few size 2 slots open and I figured that stunlocking Kushala meant I wouldn't take damage anyway. Unfortunately I'm not perfect, and using peak performance meant that I had to waste good opportunities to re-engage the stunlock to instead heal. Another thing that helped was being less lazy and actually just softening the head. I'm gonna try to figure out Heroics and see if I can get good at proccing that. I think softening the head made the biggest difference. I assume that doubling over the threshold is something you can only really do once you have a properly refined build, unlike my hodgepodge of a build. I basically just took any old build and threw the necessary decorations onto it. As for using an overlay, I know people don't really approve of it, and I didn't either at first. I don't like to play multiplayer all that much (I play with my fiancé, but that's it) and that was fine for the base game and for iceborne. When we got to Safi though, fighting Safi with just two of us was annoying. Trying to break parts and maximize our score while dealing as much damage as we could. I decided I would use an overlay just for Safi. Well, it was actually really nice to have it on. It _does_ make the fight easier, I won't argue against that. And trying to learn how monsters act and developing intuition on when their parts will break is very fun! The end-game of iceborne is just too hard for me to do solo (my fiance's been playing a lot of final fantasy XIV lately so I'm mostly solo now) so I decided to stick with the overlay for now. I know I could overcome these challenges _without_ an overlay, but I'm honestly having more fun with it on for the time being. I have no intention of using an overlay once Rise is out on PC, though. Anyway, thanks for the help, I think I've gotten a feel for how this bowgun works now, and I'm beginning to understand how to alter this build to suit me. Once I get the timing on Kushala down, and perhaps optimize my build a little more to fit some more offensive skills in, I think I'll get a lot more consistent on it! Edit: Just had a run that was on pace for about a 5 and a half minute victory. Just some minor optimizations that took this up to a pretty clean strat. Still making mistakes that will be ironed out with a little practice (actually failed the mission to fainting, but that's because I'm not running health boost and I didn't eat or use max potions after fainting, so I was at a measly 50 hp. Given how the strat works, I think that issue will solve itself once I iron out these mistakes I keep making.)
@@Zebo12345678 Im glad you we're able to figure it out! Yup, spread HBG is stupidly powerful lol, especially in a stunlock. Ammo up to 8 definitely makes a huge difference - an extra shot or two per knockdown before having to reload gives more of a dps boost than spending the charm/decos on attack boost, imo don't stress yourself about the overlay. use it if you enjoy using it. I'm probably gonna use it in my IB PC stuff (when/if I finally start streaming again lol). The only real issue is when speedrunners post runs without disclosing that they're using it - otherwise, use whatever mods/tools let you have more fun with the game imo heroics is an interesting idea, though I wouldn't recommend it (though definitely try it a bit if you want, it's fun to attempt!). You need heroics secret (the cap increase) for it to be worth using and getting heroics active in the hunt is pretty annoying and requires pretty good decision making, and if you mess it up, you end up carting in the process. It's how I get my fastest runs, and when I get into a good flow and am paying solid attention to the game, it's very quick. But I tend to cart often enough that the gain in speed is offset quite a bit, and what little benefit remains isn't worth all effort to do long farming sessions with it, personally. But if it's enticing to you, you should definitely give it a shot. Just don't beat yourself up too bad if it doesn't go well!
That´s what I asked myself at first too. But it was easy to figure out: His Bowgun has an attack value of 435. You need to augment Attackboost Lvl II to get this value. Also he got a defense bonus +15 wich you get from Defenseboost Lvl I. :)
While it's ass that you have to stunlock Kushala to be able to deal with its bullshit mechanics, it's really cool to have this look into how to optimize hunts. I often just watch runners stunlock and script fights without really thinking about how much thinking it really needs to get there.
thanks! spread hbg definitely takes less effort than other runs. for example, i spent 2 days doing nothing but kushala on stream to learn the timings for my GS headlock. But for spread, which i never tried before or practised, after i got my GS run I thought "lets just try hbg for fun" and i had the lock within about 3 minutes, first hunt was like
Cons OA I was there in your stream while you were practicing on Tempered Kush investigations, and seeing how seemingly inconsistent that stupid swaying head is made me commit to using stickies. Teostra feels a lot more consistent to get a script in, and at least he doesn’t waste minutes at a time with bullshit flying and giant bullshit tornadoes with 0 counterplay
chris is right that you lose damage, but if you just run a better set than mine (replace kirin with actual good parts) you can easily get it lockable without the scope

Ive been using kirin bonus set since day 1 of kushy event, i think think the bonus set works but has barely any effect on the rewards. Coz of rng dont know if any one else usesit or any better result
Reserch points from the bone pile in the guiding lands, money not sure witch option is better: "speedrunning" the tiny night palumu event, joining random Sos to collect golden eggs from reward (using bandit matle for more money) , collecting Steamworks fuel from guiding lands and selling stuff, or actually farming this kushala and selling his drops
does this work on other monsters aswell? also im able to do this but not very consistent i didnt think this was real until i tried it i still get run times of about 7 to 12 minutes
If you don't have this set, zinogre isn't thaat behind it. But I would personally run sticky if u don't have the set. Much safer if you can't get the consistent stun lock. But try the zin hbg, if u can't get shot count correct, switch to sticky :)
Edit: never mind I love you cons I just needed practice without heroics. When I try it’s so wildly inconsistent and makes it impossible. Should I take off heroics and just try to make everything as even as possible?
yes absolutely, follow the video and note that i dont use heroics, follow the advice about making things as even as possible. just make whatever set you like and focus on finding out how many shots it takes and stuff

@@chef4025 np son! fwiw i only used heroics in that other video to see how far i could push the method. i dont think its actually worth the stress of using it; it doesnt save enough time to make it worth the inevitable failed setups unless you get really good at the setup. Even then I'd rather put something on youtube and zone out without trying too hard, which is tough with heroics. I didnt mean to make it seem like heroics was a good idea in the other video, i thought i advised against it but i might not have, idk. hopefully ill be back for wilds yeah! especially if there are complex mechanics that need explaining
@@ConsOA I’ve been getting pretty consistent with heroics rocksteady into temporal. Temporal lasts until I can get him on the ground and begin the loop. Got around 10 sealed in one hunt but nothing in them. Yea I’d be really happy to see you in wilds
I’m at 80 rerolls in my safi burst cannon and haven’t gotten recoil suppressor. What does it do? Do I absolutely need it because I really want to just give up at this point...
i think you end up trying with a different safi weapon. i think when i was setting up my weapon i ran into the same problem. People said that to get that you need to try with a new safi Burst cannon from scratch. i just said f*** it and forget the recoil supressor. just add it to the gun and you lose 1 close up range mod (ie 3 mods rather than 4 plus the special scope) or just use loyal thunder which is still pretty damn good.
just swap one close range mod for a recoil mod, i think its like a 3~4% dps loss, not a huge deal and definitely still easy to get the lock. you might need a different number of shots than me, but this vid shows how to work all that out so you should be okay
In this case, no, it only applies to status effects, like KO, Para, Poison etc., but in this case it's a damage knockout and not a status effect, so it doesn't have a threshold
Why kushala? Why not teostra? Is kushala easier? Also when I shot this dude, sometimes bullets do no damage cuz of the wind. And do you not tenderize this guys head?
I will stay with stickys and 10-12min hunts i tried this and it doesnt work for me because i need to have glider mantle up for the decos like said great vid but not for me
I either pull my hair out trying to kill her normally or pull my hair out trying to do this properly. I can hardly get her down for the first time without getting stun locked myself then I try to make a system like you did of counting my shots. Most of the time it doesn't work and Kushala immediately either roars or flys. This might actually be the least amount of fun I've had playing this game. Capcom really shit the bed with Kushala. I think I can stomach getting ONE less sealed Feystone and spending 3 more minutes each time by just killing the fucking zinogre.
You really should consider putting ads in, this is quality content right here. I mean there aren't even starting ads in the video and that's basically a TH-cam staple. For the work your putting in you really should monetise it at least a little.
ah thanks, i do have some ads enabled but i set them to not be the annoying ones (like unskippable for example) and iirc I have that feature that turns off targetted advertising, so probably google just doesnt give my videos many ads haha, but ofc i dont get paid much as a result lol i appreciate the kindness

Shakeel Amlay thank you to be honest I have the Safi one but not with full damage awakened abilitys so I was a bit curious but if Zinogre is nearly equal it's fine
as shakeel kindly explained, zin is very close and can easily stunlock (i use 6 shots + a 7th in this set, but i also use kirin and not much offense. a proper set, and the possiblity to go 7/8 or even 8/reload/9 in time, means pretty much any set will do lol)
I’ve tried this several times. I’ve actually even made a set with fatalis armor and HBG . This is not a consistent build or run. You need to play with your set and slugger food for this to happen. You should really post a video without slugger food as the effect it has on the “speed” plays a major role. With fatalis set you break the Dps threshold way to often even at 4 shots. Sometimes you get a KO at 4 sometimes 5 sometimes 6 , 7 or 8 . Haven’t tried Teo. Luna doesn’t even get initial KO. This has to be either nerfed or just overall outdated cheese.
these aren't KO's, they're stagger knockdowns, so unless you're using impact mantle at the start, slugger has nothing to do with them. this is completely consistent if you have even just a little bit of competency at the game. you just need to use some common sense and follow the tips carefully If you're getting alot of variance in how many shots you need to knock it down, maybe you're running like 50% affinity, so obviously it takes more/less shots depending on how many crits you get. It's also possible you aren't doing a good job of being at critical distance consistently. Maybe you're tenderising the head and when that wears off, it suddenly starts taking more hits, or maybe you're running agitator, and thus during rage mode it takes fewer hits because of your increased damage i really can't tell you what you're doing wrong without watching you play, but I assure you this still works and is nearly 100% consistent if you follow the advice properly

@@Thug_Nose i was a little mean when i replied to them lmao, must have been a little grumpy >.< I'm glad you find this stuff useful, and i hope you manage to get the strat down fully. It definitely takes a little bit of practise and effort, i'm sure you'll get it soon. But i think the best thing about this is even if you mess up the timing, you can just run around and wait for kush to land again, and it'll normally only be 1 shot away from going down. So even when u mess up, should at least still be a decently quick method. Anyway im rambling, thanks for the kind words

REMEMBER TO WAIT A FEW MOMENTS BEFORE SHOOTING KUSHALA AFTER IT GETS UP - the topple lasts a little longer and you could risk overshooting the threshold if you don't wait. See footage above for when to shoot, roughly.
I accidentally cut this out of the video, but if you don't have safi burstcannon, just run zinogre HBG. Very similar damage, easily reach the lock. Also If you're struggling to replicate the set, just drop kirin and run an actual good set with dps skills lol. You can easily outdo this set with even trash decos if you run anything else but kirin

Attack+ replace with Expert+ (everyone has it) and replace 2 expert decos with 2 attack decos (silver melding ticket can give these if you're never lucky)
so, if you bring enough dps, you can actually skip a topple and go for the one after, but that requires u not to miss a shot!!!
I think a VERY important detail to note about this strategy is the critical distancing of the special scope attachment. As someone who's knew to the heavy bowgun, I was unaware of the optimal distance for the special scope so my numbers were always off and I couldn't be consistent with the stun lock. I copied the build to the T but my numbers were always off. After many many many many failed attempts and stressful moments, i realized I was too close at times so I wasn't getting consistent results. I thought the closer yu were the better but that is not the case with the special scope. Hopefully this saves others from pulling their hair out. I've lost all of mine already with this monster.

From watching you, it seems the stun threshold is around 1500. Very useful information. Know your weapon damage per hit for each move, sequence a set of moves to bring to under 1400 or so. You got yourself a stun lock for every weapon. Thanks Cons

As a long time veteran of Monster Hunter, I gotta say, (and there are a few monsters in world where this applies to) if the only way people want to fight your monster without pulling their hair out is to keep it from moving entirely, ya done messed up.

Keep it clean though stuff like this really shouldn't go out it's a speedrunners secret once this gets out more then MH will be about stun lock city . We dont want it to the point where stun is either happening to most monsters or stun gets nerfed like flash pods in a huge way no cars too much about them !
How would they fix it though? The wind aura is basically kushala's entire shtick. The fact that's its also the part everyone hates makes fixing the fight basically impossible.

Another easy way is to use a thunder bow (I prefer Kjarr bow) with full safi set, Bolt V, evade extender 3(a comfy skill), bow charge +(preferbly you want this but its alright without), crit eye 4, crit boost 3, health boost 3.
Just dodge her attack and do a charge normal shot + 1 spread shot and repeat. The window for attacking and dodging is perfect for bows, makes kudhala perfect for training how to use bow!! Just make sure to aim for the head or tail!! You should be able to clear her in 5 mins.
Kushala's such a headache because it's weakness to poison isn't the same as the old games. Kushala was hella easy once someone brought a poison weapon to nullify the wind pressure. Now it's just ridiculous.

I'm trying this but the special scope is just so miserable. Maybe it's a matter of getting used to it? I feel like I can't see well enough to line up my shots and even when I manage that it seems like my damage is much lower, I'm guessing because her head isn't at the right range for the special scope to function (I have it set to closest range). I'm guessing this won't do enough damage to knock her down without that though, right? Does partbreaker affect how quickly shooting her in the head will stagger her?
I realize that "quickscoping" when kushala is moving and "hardscoping" when she's down is the most bearable for me. Sorry for the COD terms LOL. This seems much less miserable to me than trying to track her moving through the scope on ps4.
you can drop the scope, just run more dps skills and stuff. maybe drop the kirin set for something more efficient to make up the difference. someone in our discord server also hates the scope and said they used this guide and made a set that locked without the scope!

Zinogre/Stygian Zinogre HBG is a very slightly less optimized version of this gun. It's still very usuable for something like this.

When this event dropped I didn't think it was so bad, but after a few days I'm back to thinking Kush is probably the worst thing in the game, especially for a melee user. It's so terrible, the ai is erratic at best and unless you lock it down it farts about up in the sky being generally obnoxious lol.
So thanks for this, might hang up my sns for a bit and start blasting it in the face :) Kush actually has me looking forward to Luna (what am I saying...?)

If you want to push your dps a little and are waiting after the 5/6 shots to the head you can pop a couple shots into the forelegs, they have a decent shot hitzone and have a separate flinch (topple) counter. The leg flinch is the same priority as the head, so it wont mess up your lock, but all the extra shots are free damage and make for shorter hunts.
also if the scope makes your head spin you can drop it and just do 7/8 shots. its a 30% buff though, so dropping it will make your hunts a lot longer for sure. likewise you can run the build with "Loyal thunder" if you don't have access to Safi, but your going to have to adjust your count a bit. the great part of this video is Cons shows the why not just the how, so you can repeat this process with any weapon. :D
iirc "Great luck" works by increasing the number of boxes awarded at the end of the hunt (though no idea how many), and each of those boxes has the ~10% chance to add a Sealed feystone (8% 1 sealed, 1% 3x). Depending on the number of extra boxes rolled your looking at a significant number more of the extra feystones. Ballpark i'd say that the quest average is 4 sealed per run, and 5 sealed per great luck run, so with a set as braindead as Spread 3 there really isn't any reason not to run Great luck.

@@ReviaTheStarf how many CR mods? and what dmg skills are you stacking? the scope is a flat 30%, so you shouldn't see a drop to below 30 if you were hitting in the 40s.
I don't mean to insult you, but do you see you view change when you aim with and without scope? the odd thing about the scope is it needs to be equipped each hunt (2:07), so new players to bowguns don't realize and think its just a flat buff. either way your damage should go up with the scope. (your 29 should be 37-38 scoped)

It’s always the same story. “This is soooo easy.” And then I make the exact same build, and none of the behaviors observed in the video actually happen. I do less damage per pellet, and it takes 8 perfect hits to knock it down, which means if I have any stray pellets I have to reload, and it leaps up and spins away from me or launches up in the air where it can’t be shot. It doesn’t just stand there looking at me waiting for me to shoot it a couple of extra times in the face.
just make a higher dps set then? im literally running kirin here, you could easily swap out for like safi with resentment, or anything with better dps skills, and get a bunch more dps to make the lock more consistent?
and during the spin move where it flies, it literally holds its head still for like 1.5 seconds. If it's spamming that, it literally is standing still waiting for you to shoot it
Cons OA I’ll give it a try. I guess Safi will help. I wasn’t really thinking I could do a lot better than full crit eye full attack and full max might. Turns out Where I’m losing DPS to your set is that I don’t have attack augments on the gun. 🙄 And you’re right, I get a shot on him while he flexes before taking off, but the reload is murdering me. Anyway, thanks for the reply and sorry for the salt. I can beat this jerk all day with hammer but it’s annoying and takes too long. I tried out your set last night when I should have been sleeping. I was thinking I’d grab a couple of quick runs and I wound up spending an hour getting my ass handed to me trying to get it right.

Attack augs help, use food buffs, run either safi with max resentment or not safi with peak performance (so swap out the shitty kirin pieces for something more skill efficient and use the extra space for peak perf, maybe use two brachy for agi secret, maybe even drop jang for agi secret AND run safi with resentment, tho youd be forced to maintain rage mode to benefit from the agi, etc

I just got to MR 100 and don't have the stuff to augment or max out. What I did was use fortify. I wear only my fortify piece on first and second lives then equip full set and eat. It's an easy one slot huge attack boost

if you don't have attack+4 jewel you can just slot attack1 instead and use expert+4 which I'm pretty sure you get one of in story.
If you have both but not stonethrower/expert you can use those and put stonethrower in the 1 slots instead. just simple stuff idk why I'm typing this
Tbh any set can work, it's just a matter of working out the damage threshholds. Using agi 7 and resentment with Safi will give you the option to get to x2 the threshold and get a flinch, while doing way more damage in the process

Weakning its tail and shooting there in multiplayer is easier to hit and more likely to dish out a lot of damage vs fighting for head shots against 3 other people of you don't want to solo this

VERY noob question. I see you eat for slugger? Does slotting slugger if you have room helps more than damage there? For example. I can fit easily 1 point of slugger or peak performance on top of you current build. What would be the best?

yup, just put more dps on the set if you can and try it, it'll probably take an extra shot or two to down it though. also you can drop kirin completely and make a way more powerful set to make up the difference

@@ConsOA True but for most monsters I think shield gives a safe way to play. So that you don't die in one or two hits. But the way you position, it shows how good a player you are.

I still don't understand bowguns dude. I have damn near max crit chance, critical boost 3, attack boost 7, spread shot 2, and I'm using Stygian HBG, but I'm doing only about 25 damage per pellet, while you're doing well over 40. I even tried using special scope but that seems to be way too hard on controller. I even tried to implement partbreaker (it affects the topple threshold) into the build because I couldn't reach the threshold before Kushala gets up. I'm standing in range, so what am I doing wrong?
Have you added close ranged mods to the HBG? I'm also not sure if stygian is the right HBG to use or if normal zin is better, I can't check atm but might be worth looking into. fwiw I play on controller, and if you line it up properly, I find this easier on controller than on kb/m. But also, this is easily doable without the scope so don't worry about that too much.
It's also possible you're overdoing the threshold? It's unrelated to why you're getting less damage than me, but even at 25 per pellet, it should still be a consistent stunlock. Wait a tiny bit after kushala gets up, before shooting your shot, as the knocked-down state lasts a little longer than it appears and if you do enough damage to knockdown again during it, you just go back to the start. I explain how to find out the right number of shots in the vid, so be sure to make sure you're following it. Also eat for atk up food if you aren't already, I guess. not sure what else it could be, let me know how it goes
@@ConsOA I can take a look at the regular zinogre hbg. I had an overlay installed, so I could see the hp of Kushala's head (the topple threshold). I was consistently one or two shots short of the theshold. I've had this issue (low damage) with pretty much any bowgun build I've tried other than stickies, so I know there's _something_ I've always done wrong. I had three close range mods and two recoil suppressors to get the recoil to low. I also tested it with normal recoil so This is the closest I've gotten to having a bowgun build that worked other than the mindless lbg sticky build that I used to net my first Master Rank Kulve Taroth kill.
I googled the Zinogre HBG and the stygian HBG just now. I only have the first stygian HBG at the moment, but its stats were seemingly identical to the final level of the Zinogre HBG. 420 base attack, 6 spread 3 ammo capacity, normal recoil +2. According to the database I'm looking at though, the stygian one takes two recoil suppressors to get to low recoil, so maybe that's where I'm going wrong. That would only net me one extra close range mod though, so I still don't see that being enough. I'm sure there's got to be something fundamental that I'm missing but I can't figure it out. You're able to double over the threshold and yet I struggle to hit it once.
I've been playing this game a heck of a lot today (plus it's Christmas Eve) so I'm not going to mess with this anymore today, but I'll investigate some more later. Decoration grinding is something I've put off for a long time but I just beat Alatreon within the last week (thanks for the guides) and I think it would benefit me quite a bit if I could get some more convenient decorations before I try to take down Fatalis.
@@Zebo12345678 Thanks for the detailed explanation of your issue. Unfortunately, the additional close range mod probably isn't going to make the difference. And the two HBG's seem too similar for that to be the issue, then. Really weird.
It might be a positioning thing. Keep an eye on my damage numbers when I first start the kushala hunt. youtube compression makes it a little hard to see, but I think they're varying from 29 through to like 35 depending on where I'm standing, and non-crits are worse. Keep in mind that kushala takes more damage once it enters rage mode too, maybe 20~30%? I don't know the modifier off the top of my head.
iirc special scope at proper crit distance adds about 30% to your damage per shot, and an additional close range will probably only add 5%, maybe 10%. I'd advise you test these various mechanics on the training pole when you want to see how alterations affect your damage output. Between these you *might* be able too account for the bulk of the difference, but you're probably positioning well so maybe not. Hard to say to be sure
The other way to help make up for lowered DPS is to eat might seed/mega demondrug/demon powder. These help a bit, and agitator + tenderising can also up the numbers, if you're willing to accept less consistency (you're using an overlay, so that should be a decent compromise, unless you plan on turning the overlay off once you've worked out what the problem is). As I mention and as I'm sure you already know, me running the kirin set here is completely unnecessary. So feel free to run whatever set you like to help fit more dps skills into the set
The only last thing I can inquire about, is if reloading is causing a bottleneck for your dps? Make sure you're running free element on the set (it's a dual skill, free element on blades and ammo up on guns) to increase the clip size to 8. You can also sun spareshot if you think firing more shots before reloading would help you edge out enough dps to get the knockdown.
Sorry I can't give any advice specifically for the damage number issue, I'm stumped. Good luck with your testing when you get around to it! Keep me posted when you do ^^

So remember that overlay I was using? Well I actually took a look at what the dps of that set was and it is actually ridiculously high. Sure I have low damage compared to _you_ but I really underestimated how strong spread heavy bowgun is!
I've successfully completed my first Daora hunt. You were absolutely right, the extra ammo capacity was far more important than I thought. I thought that extra attack boost would have been better than the ammo up since you already have pretty high ammo in a heavy bowgun and the reload speed isn't all that bad. Turns out I was just wrong. That extra ammo was a big deal!
As for my actual run, it took about 9 and a half minutes, and I _did_ overshoot the threshold a couple times (mistimed the last shot mostly). I was using peak performance because I had a few size 2 slots open and I figured that stunlocking Kushala meant I wouldn't take damage anyway. Unfortunately I'm not perfect, and using peak performance meant that I had to waste good opportunities to re-engage the stunlock to instead heal.
Another thing that helped was being less lazy and actually just softening the head. I'm gonna try to figure out Heroics and see if I can get good at proccing that. I think softening the head made the biggest difference. I assume that doubling over the threshold is something you can only really do once you have a properly refined build, unlike my hodgepodge of a build. I basically just took any old build and threw the necessary decorations onto it.
As for using an overlay, I know people don't really approve of it, and I didn't either at first. I don't like to play multiplayer all that much (I play with my fiancé, but that's it) and that was fine for the base game and for iceborne. When we got to Safi though, fighting Safi with just two of us was annoying. Trying to break parts and maximize our score while dealing as much damage as we could. I decided I would use an overlay just for Safi. Well, it was actually really nice to have it on. It _does_ make the fight easier, I won't argue against that. And trying to learn how monsters act and developing intuition on when their parts will break is very fun! The end-game of iceborne is just too hard for me to do solo (my fiance's been playing a lot of final fantasy XIV lately so I'm mostly solo now) so I decided to stick with the overlay for now. I know I could overcome these challenges _without_ an overlay, but I'm honestly having more fun with it on for the time being.
I have no intention of using an overlay once Rise is out on PC, though.
Anyway, thanks for the help, I think I've gotten a feel for how this bowgun works now, and I'm beginning to understand how to alter this build to suit me. Once I get the timing on Kushala down, and perhaps optimize my build a little more to fit some more offensive skills in, I think I'll get a lot more consistent on it!
Edit: Just had a run that was on pace for about a 5 and a half minute victory. Just some minor optimizations that took this up to a pretty clean strat. Still making mistakes that will be ironed out with a little practice (actually failed the mission to fainting, but that's because I'm not running health boost and I didn't eat or use max potions after fainting, so I was at a measly 50 hp. Given how the strat works, I think that issue will solve itself once I iron out these mistakes I keep making.)

don't stress yourself about the overlay. use it if you enjoy using it. I'm probably gonna use it in my IB PC stuff (when/if I finally start streaming again lol). The only real issue is when speedrunners post runs without disclosing that they're using it - otherwise, use whatever mods/tools let you have more fun with the game imo
heroics is an interesting idea, though I wouldn't recommend it (though definitely try it a bit if you want, it's fun to attempt!).
You need heroics secret (the cap increase) for it to be worth using and getting heroics active in the hunt is pretty annoying and requires pretty good decision making, and if you mess it up, you end up carting in the process. It's how I get my fastest runs, and when I get into a good flow and am paying solid attention to the game, it's very quick. But I tend to cart often enough that the gain in speed is offset quite a bit, and what little benefit remains isn't worth all effort to do long farming sessions with it, personally. But if it's enticing to you, you should definitely give it a shot. Just don't beat yourself up too bad if it doesn't go well!

What were the augmentations on the gun?
That´s what I asked myself at first too. But it was easy to figure out:
His Bowgun has an attack value of 435. You need to augment Attackboost Lvl II to get this value.
Also he got a defense bonus +15 wich you get from Defenseboost Lvl I. :)

While it's ass that you have to stunlock Kushala to be able to deal with its bullshit mechanics, it's really cool to have this look into how to optimize hunts. I often just watch runners stunlock and script fights without really thinking about how much thinking it really needs to get there.

But for spread, which i never tried before or practised, after i got my GS run I thought "lets just try hbg for fun" and i had the lock within about 3 minutes, first hunt was like
Cons OA I was there in your stream while you were practicing on Tempered Kush investigations, and seeing how seemingly inconsistent that stupid swaying head is made me commit to using stickies. Teostra feels a lot more consistent to get a script in, and at least he doesn’t waste minutes at a time with bullshit flying and giant bullshit tornadoes with 0 counterplay

Yes, you're damage drops considerably without it unfortunately
chris is right that you lose damage, but if you just run a better set than mine (replace kirin with actual good parts) you can easily get it lockable without the scope

Reserch points from the bone pile in the guiding lands, money not sure witch option is better: "speedrunning" the tiny night palumu event, joining random Sos to collect golden eggs from reward (using bandit matle for more money) , collecting Steamworks fuel from guiding lands and selling stuff, or actually farming this kushala and selling his drops

yeah getting the initial knockdown is a bit of a pain in the ass, so learning the lock can be rough, but once you get that down it's smooth sailing

The threshold resets and you have to meet it all over again
as phi kindly explained, you go over the threshold and it resets, so you gotta do all 7 or 8 shots of whatever again
Will this work with a zinogre HBG spread? I have the burstcannon but don't have enough dracolite to upgrade it..
If you don't have this set, zinogre isn't thaat behind it. But I would personally run sticky if u don't have the set. Much safer if you can't get the consistent stun lock. But try the zin hbg, if u can't get shot count correct, switch to sticky :)
yup, zin is fine, you might need to swap kirin for a better set tho to get more dps skills to make up the difference

yes absolutely, follow the video and note that i dont use heroics, follow the advice about making things as even as possible. just make whatever set you like and focus on finding out how many shots it takes and stuff

@@chef4025 np son! fwiw i only used heroics in that other video to see how far i could push the method. i dont think its actually worth the stress of using it; it doesnt save enough time to make it worth the inevitable failed setups unless you get really good at the setup. Even then I'd rather put something on youtube and zone out without trying too hard, which is tough with heroics. I didnt mean to make it seem like heroics was a good idea in the other video, i thought i advised against it but i might not have, idk.

@@ConsOA I’ve been getting pretty consistent with heroics rocksteady into temporal. Temporal lasts until I can get him on the ground and begin the loop. Got around 10 sealed in one hunt but nothing in them. Yea I’d be really happy to see you in wilds
I’m at 80 rerolls in my safi burst cannon and haven’t gotten recoil suppressor. What does it do? Do I absolutely need it because I really want to just give up at this point...
i think you end up trying with a different safi weapon. i think when i was setting up my weapon i ran into the same problem. People said that to get that you need to try with a new safi Burst cannon from scratch. i just said f*** it and forget the recoil supressor. just add it to the gun and you lose 1 close up range mod (ie 3 mods rather than 4 plus the special scope) or just use loyal thunder which is still pretty damn good.
just swap one close range mod for a recoil mod, i think its like a 3~4% dps loss, not a huge deal and definitely still easy to get the lock. you might need a different number of shots than me, but this vid shows how to work all that out so you should be okay
How did you manage to get that many research points ? cheats/mods/cheatengine or just years of playing ? I have never enough of those.

In this case, no, it only applies to status effects, like KO, Para, Poison etc., but in this case it's a damage knockout and not a status effect, so it doesn't have a threshold

yeah overlays exist if you play on PC, use them if you're comfortable with them

I can hardly get her down for the first time without getting stun locked myself then I try to make a system like you did of counting my shots. Most of the time it doesn't work and Kushala immediately either roars or flys.
This might actually be the least amount of fun I've had playing this game. Capcom really shit the bed with Kushala.
I think I can stomach getting ONE less sealed Feystone and spending 3 more minutes each time by just killing the fucking zinogre.
You really should consider putting ads in, this is quality content right here. I mean there aren't even starting ads in the video and that's basically a TH-cam staple. For the work your putting in you really should monetise it at least a little.
ah thanks, i do have some ads enabled but i set them to not be the annoying ones (like unskippable for example) and iirc I have that feature that turns off targetted advertising, so probably google just doesnt give my videos many ads haha, but ofc i dont get paid much as a result lol

Zinogre loyal thunder is good. Not that far off from safi's one. Food buffs should equal out the damage for you to get the stunlock
Shakeel Amlay thank you to be honest I have the Safi one but not with full damage awakened abilitys so I was a bit curious but if Zinogre is nearly equal it's fine
as shakeel kindly explained, zin is very close and can easily stunlock (i use 6 shots + a 7th in this set, but i also use kirin and not much offense. a proper set, and the possiblity to go 7/8 or even 8/reload/9 in time, means pretty much any set will do lol)
Cons OA would your rather take the stygian Zinogre one or the normal Zinogre one ?

I’ve tried this several times. I’ve actually even made a set with fatalis armor and HBG . This is not a consistent build or run. You need to play with your set and slugger food for this to happen. You should really post a video without slugger food as the effect it has on the “speed” plays a major role.
With fatalis set you break the Dps threshold way to often even at 4 shots.
Sometimes you get a KO at 4 sometimes 5 sometimes 6 , 7 or 8 .
Haven’t tried Teo. Luna doesn’t even get initial KO. This has to be either nerfed or just overall outdated cheese.
these aren't KO's, they're stagger knockdowns, so unless you're using impact mantle at the start, slugger has nothing to do with them.
this is completely consistent if you have even just a little bit of competency at the game. you just need to use some common sense and follow the tips carefully
If you're getting alot of variance in how many shots you need to knock it down, maybe you're running like 50% affinity, so obviously it takes more/less shots depending on how many crits you get. It's also possible you aren't doing a good job of being at critical distance consistently. Maybe you're tenderising the head and when that wears off, it suddenly starts taking more hits, or maybe you're running agitator, and thus during rage mode it takes fewer hits because of your increased damage
i really can't tell you what you're doing wrong without watching you play, but I assure you this still works and is nearly 100% consistent if you follow the advice properly

I'm glad you find this stuff useful, and i hope you manage to get the strat down fully. It definitely takes a little bit of practise and effort, i'm sure you'll get it soon. But i think the best thing about this is even if you mess up the timing, you can just run around and wait for kush to land again, and it'll normally only be 1 shot away from going down. So even when u mess up, should at least still be a decently quick method.
