    Hi Beez, since I just got the Hawk, I watched this review. The studs issue is one of many reasons why I remove the clips of all knives. They then go deep in the pocket and you have to grab them completely to take them out, avoiding any complication. Quite a different style of videos back in 2021 😊

    people are judging the knife based on one guy with a certain pair of jeans . I carry this knife alot and never seen any issues like this .

    • @BeezBlades
      @BeezBlades  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe it's the detent on the knife I received. It happened in every style of pants I wore. BDU's, tighter jeans, loose jeans, etc. I haven't heard anyone else complaining of this issue, so I must have got a bad apple. It happens.

    Late to the party, but have been carrying this knife for months and have never had a single snag, regardless of the pants I wear. Great design.

    Thank you so much for sharing this. Great review, but also thanks for that note about the thumb studs. This is a perfect example of the difference between someone who pretends to review a knife for views and for money from the industry and someone who actually carries and uses a product before reviewing it. Keep it up.

      You are welcome. I've learned a lot since then, and the lack of detent plays a big role in why it opens so easy. I haven't heard anyone else mentioning this, so mine may have just been a bad apple.

  • @squirts1
    @squirts1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This knife is a bit heavier than you would expect for it's build and size. Unfortunately they didn't mill out the liners. The detent on mine is pretty good.

  • @silentblackdisc

    Just catching up now with this one; had to get mine out to check the detent. I have this same variant, but the detent on mine is pretty firm. Maybe try to increase the detent strength with a slight adjustment to the lockbar? However, that doesn't entirely eliminate the problem with the studs catching the pocket seam on the way out. This happens with many other pocket knives, as well, depending on the thumb-stud configuration and/or shape, and is particularly a problem when they extend past the scale or have been milled to increase purchasability. I call it the non-Emerson misfire, and it can cost one some blood. This is why I generally carry my knives in a pouch, even ones with clips, either in my pocket or attached to my belt (excluding quick-access knives). At least limit your quick-access clipped-to-the-pocket knives to ones without the issue. There are a number of other reasons to do so, as well, if you are allowed to carry concealed like that. Clips can sometimes catch on surfaces and rip the knife from your pocket, or scratch automobiles and other surfaces (or your knife) when leaning in too closely. It also extends the wear of the knife and clip and preserves the finished look dramatically. Not to mention, as an enthusiast, if one carries multiple knives, clippable space become limited. In any case, the Hawk gets a pass from me here 'cause I just love it otherwise! Great vid, Beez, thanks a year later!

    • @BeezBlades
      @BeezBlades  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the insight! It sounds like the main problem with mine is the lack of detent whatsoever. I've talked to scores of other people that did not have the same problem. There will always be a lemon in the bunch. I wasn't able to strengthen the detent enough to make a difference with this one.
      The pouch is a great idea, specially for the nicer knives in which I want to preserve the aesthetics. It's funny, since I carry multiple knives I have learned to steer my hip clear of cars, doors and wall edges hahaha.
      Thanks again!

    Thats a gr8 point about the thumb studs. My detent is strong but still something to keep in mind.

  • @yankee2yankee216
    @yankee2yankee216 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am a skinny guy with skinny fingers, and for me, that is NOT a finger choil. When I put my finger in it, about 1/8” of it is ON THE BLADE! I wouldn’t (usually) use it that way. Detents can definitely be too strong. It’s bad either way! Too weak or too strong is never good enough. BTW, I LOVE the dumbell shaped thumb studs! These can be used like an Emerson Wave… I also like the way they look, like the eyes on an Ancient American Birdstone I have. Spectacular! Definitely not a deal-breaker, though it may contribute to efforts by the legal community to prohibit folding knives that “can be opened to a full-lock position,” a function which is prohibited in Massachusetts. I have, BTW (and by accident) 2 copies, both with raindrop Damascus AND raindrop CF. I LOVE these knives!

    I really dislike weak detents. I can handle a slightly stronger detent but a weak one really kills it for me. Appreciate you calling out the Hawks thumb studs catching on your pocket. The price of this knife is too similar to Civivi to have these kind of flaws if they want to be competitive.

    Great review. I was thinking about getting the Hawk in the Verawood S35VN or the Carbon fiber S35VN. I like just about everything about it. The snagging on that pants and opening would suck, especially if you cut yourself...hopefully that wont be an issue. Is there maybe any other knives I should look at instead???

  • @TopDog8762
    @TopDog8762 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have this exact version of this knife. I love the look and feel of this pocket knife. The weak detent is the downfall of this model. And its a shame. I have not had the problem of the blade deploying while pulling it out of my pocket. But I wear almost exclusively cargo pants and hardly ever jeans. Perhaps in pants with less room in the pocket it would be a problem.

    • @BeezBlades
      @BeezBlades  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TopDog! I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue with the Hawk. I think mine is possibly a bad example of the knife because it has virtually no detent. One of these days I'll get another one when they go on sale so I can compare. I love everything else about this one though. It checks all the boxes!

  • @LH_Vagrant
    @LH_Vagrant 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting issue. I suppose it mainly occurs when the blade is pushed all the way to the corner of the pocket. A knife that snags isn't a deal breaker, but one that regularly deploys when I don't want it to absolutely is. After seeing this I certainly wouldn't trust it in my pocket. Good thing I saw your video, because I was contemplating this exact version for the beautiful micarta.

    It's a shame that two small issues, that on their own probably wouldn't be that significant, combined to ruin your enjoyment of the knife. Since you can't do much to increase the detent strength (at least not to my knowledge), I would consider either swapping out the thumbstuds or taking the stock studs and grinding down the profile so it doesn't flare out so much to the point of snagging on your pocket.

    • @JustIn-op6oy
      @JustIn-op6oy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just went and took a quick look at the studs on my QSP Penguin and they're cylindrical in profile with a stepped conical tip. If QSP had only used those studs instead of the hour glass shaped studs, I don't think you would have ended up cutting your finger. It might be worth calling up QSP and seeing if they could send you a set of the Penguin's studs to use on the Hawk.

    • @BeezBlades
      @BeezBlades  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Just in I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue, and I'm pretty sure it's just because mine has little-to-no detent. Had I had a little more knowledge back then, I would have returned and replaced it. I already Know I would love one with a "regular" detent. Thank you brother!

    Mine doesn't accidentally deploy. Mine has what appears to be a much stronger detent than yours does 🤷‍♂️ I can however excessively drag the knife against my pocket and catch the thumbstuds. Sort of like a make-shift Emerson wave or like you mentioned the old spydie hole zip tie trick

    @dubbayabird6680 ปีที่แล้ว

    that's the reason I don't like thumbstuds.
    that and I have schredded my knuckles getting other things from my pockets with stud knives.
    as for weak detents. I had a buck sprint that cam open in my pocket and I cut 4 fingers on it. the only good thing about that was I was lucky and it was the top layer of skin on all 4 so no blood. but as much as I liked that knife I stopped carrying it. I just wish all frn scales were like that .

    • @BeezBlades
      @BeezBlades  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue with this particular knife is the lack of detent, more than anything. I was not able to get the studs out, and have not tried in a long time. I am considering getting another one to see if it was just this knife. From what I've heard from many others with this knife, I just happened to get a dud. Knowing what I know now, I should have sent it back and got another one.
      Thank you Kim!
