The latest clamour of the Private Sector is for a reduction of interest rates. I maintain that Jamaica's current problem with production and productivity has less to do with cost of production but much more to do with the mentality of a private sector who are more interested in being big shot higglers rather than being producers of tangible goods! That they are now importing ice conforms that notion.
Each restaurant, hotel, hospital or any institution including schools should have its own ice making machines. Even at home, if you entertain a lot you should own. They come in varying sizes
Oral, 2 weekends ago I paid $770.00 for a bag of ice. The place I stopped before was selling it for $980.00. I was told there is a shortage of ice since the ice factory burn down.
THE LOCAL FACTORY ON ASHENHEIM ROAD BURNT DOWN EARLY DECEMBER. IF THEY DID NOT IMPORT ICE FOR CHRISTMAS, THE LOCAL RESTAURANTS AND ALL THE HOTELS THAT RELY ON THE LOCAL ICE WOULD HAVE CREATED A PROBLEM. THE IMPORTATION IS TEMPORARY UNTIL THE FACTORY IS BACK UP SAFELY.
People's mind cannot fathom the process to manufacture all the ice for the local market. All the Happy Ice comes from that factory. It is not tap water that is frozen. It is processed to remove all the impurities that might exist. It is a factory and Jamaica does not have a second of it's kind, hence the need to import.
ONE ice factory in Jamaica?? So that if it's not operational,we have to IMPORT ICE!😁🤣🤓 There is a reason why THIRD WORLD countries are Third World!! But, remember we also imported ROCK STONE!🤓🤣😁
This is absolute RUBBISH! Why do have a fridge at home and go buy ice. Buy a deep freezer and make nuff ice then or everybody walk with uno ice. Mi sorry mi nah buy it😡😡😡😡
Thank you for sharing Maverick. However, this is absolutely jarring, and even if I was pretending to not be sick of this administration and its leadership, trust and believe that all pretense have been shredded! What happened to “to serve thee with our talents and bring our gifts to thee”?... am I to take it that the mentality of building something from the ground up has become obsolete, ever since everyone wants to start counting at 10!! What will be left in Jamaica’s honour??? Have we forgotten “Give us VISION lest we perish”???!!! #My_heart_cries!!
Ok Maverick i love the fact that you bought a bag and have your receipt for proof but i think all of that is a big support of the Jamaican uptown (RICH PEOPLE) who has money and can afford it, because why paying so much for a bag of ice when you're not even sure what kind of water you're getting, so my brother i always and will forever respect your commentary because you are the eyes, ears and mouthpiece for a lot of Jamaicans, so keep on doing what you'd been doing.
It doesn't appear that simple though. Global trading is influencing certain trends, the need for the item that is not produced in sufficient quantities (fire at the factory), likely corruption where govt officials allow their friends to import stuff we don't need like the tonnes of sugary drinks on our shelves, and the culture of our households no longer freezing their own ice, etc
Jamaican investors always seem to underestimate the local market, treating Jamaican consumers like we're behind the times. That’s why anything imported gets pushed here, and we buy it up every time. When are we going to start valuing and investing in our own?
@@joanmontaque8252 So now that you have seen it, plus Maverick has brought it to alot us attention because of course there's a lot people out there who's not in touch with what going on/taking place in our little island so let's bigup the Maverick for bringing all of this to our attention and let's continue to give the Maverick the, attention/support that he needs to continue representing us as nation.
Personal I believe one of the biggest issues Jamaica has is import that can be solved with manufacturing items ourselves. Trini etc does, Jamaica is toooo much of a consumer than producer
When i was a child we had ice factory and ice truck..now the last time i check Old Harbour ice factory was a gogo club..we are going back wards..we buy fruits and food from America..why not ice?

Oral, thank you so much for this. I bought a bag at a gas station on the boulevard on christmas eve and was shocked. The bag indicate it is from Florida, with a Florida address. Yes that is the ice. Was shock myself. Why...it was over $1000 a bag.
I hold the buyers accountable for the sales of this imported ice. Are we short on freezers and water in Jamaica? Are we so dependent? There is always the question of how clean your drinking water is? Well, I am going to ask the question, How clean is this imported ice?

Well...here's an opportunity for those enterprising minds to put pen to paper and maybe start an ice making factory or two to compete with foreign imports!
We invested 150 us dollars in a ice plant on Marcus Garvey Drive which we bought from Norway in 1987 which could have supplied the whole island With ice That was closed because of politics We mostly likely still paying back that money this shows how Dumb our politicians are
Some Jamaican think that anything foreign is better. What this shows that Jamaica have many unnecessary imports, simple things they could produce themselves. Foreign Products are generally More Expensive.
As stated by a few others. The ice factory suffered severe damage with the Azan's warehouse fire. Correction to some, this is not a government owned operation. There was ice on the road after the fire and therefore you would be able to buy those while stocks lasted at existing prices. For the increased demand during the season, the company would have been forced to purchase elsewhere. To move ice, one would need a refrigerated container. Not just a cold or cool one, but a frozen one that stays frozen (extra cost compared to standard container which is not cheap). To import just about anything, fire or not, there are duties and taxes. Once here and cleared, what is not on the road, is going to have to be stored, cold storage. Costs will add up. In all this, please remember, something we feel is as basic is ice, produced locally or overseas, is indeed a luxury good.
This one is a head scratcher and utter ridiculous. Is it only in Kingston or is it island wide? I can't figure out this one. One ice factory in the whole island and a tropical one at that!!! Utterly ridiculous. La lucha continua !!!
